Well he was doing it in seconds without looking at the pieces with one hand. In order to identify the algorithms he has to know where the colours are. So his memorization, slight of hand and deception are incredible... would take us years to learn how to do it. His final effect with the matching cubes is easy to do?
Renner - yes of course he memorised the algorithm as he was 'mixing them'... But belittling the trick is disrespecting his years of practice. Even after placing it in the bag he needed only seconds to rearange the cube and when he tossed it behind his back he needed even less. the truth is, you cant do it... it wouldnt be easy to learn and its a unique trick.
Renner - No shit, its about illusion? Naa I'm pretty sure its real magic. Why isn't it better than people who got the fooled trophy? They had no clue what he did because he misdirected them the whole time with his smaller tricks. If you don't even know the trick he did for his final effect than how can you know whether it is difficult or not? He literally says he is cheating during the act, so telling me he is cheating doesn't show your understanding of the trick beyond what he explained... Fair enough I'm sure you have your favourite magicians but you are acting like you understand what he did, but you don't... Just be amazed and don't be negative about this stuff.

Holy crap, probably the most unique magic trick ive seen in a while. Smooth and different. Love it.
hes so good that when he stuck his hand in the bag he solved it with 1 hand in 2 seconds !you can see him finishing the last move on the way out ..but some of his other tricks i dont get!
That's physically impossible to solve oh sub 3. Feliks is the fastest, but even he couldn't get it that quick
He dint't really solved it. The rubic cube he is using is a gimmick. Its physically imposible to solve a rubic cube in 2 seconds after being shuffled more than 20 times randonmly. Thats why it fooled pen and teller, they know he is not solving the cube, they know is a gimmick, but they dont know how it works. It takes a genius to make this type of performance.
It's not a gimmick, he just isn't shuffling it randomly. Notice how he only has someone else do the shuffling on the first time. Every other time he does the "randomizing".
He has a real knack for cubes though, clearly. I think the best trick was solving a rubik's cube to a different end result then the normal completion. That must take a lot of training to be able to do while you're also performing magic.
He solves one part of it when he puts it in, and finishes it when he takes it out, banking on the fact that whoever looks inside the bag doesnt memorize the "mixed" cube from before.
The final trick was the easiest and when you think about it obvious to solve. After he did the millisecond part of the trick, he starts to mix it. He's got a great memory, especially with Rubiks Cube patterns so after he finishes mixing it, he mixes it to match exactly the cube in front of Teller before doing his "I solved it by matching the patterns on both rubiks cubes".
He's simply just that good at the rubik's cube
He solved it halfway behind his back, and finished it as his hand goes below the table. He leaves the cube a couple moves from being solved prior to the trick.
The millisecond solve is easy, he has three sides solved (notice that you can only see three colors prior to the trick) and then flips the cube... Also notice how he does not show you the full cube in that instance.
Any other questions how he does the tricks? Idiot.
LUESoldat People can solve the rubik's cube one handed, just look at youtube videos. Everytime he would "mix" the rubik's cube he would know the exact amount of turns needed to solve it. The guy is incredibly brilliant and very very good at solving the cube and sleight of hand,

TheHelvetican He's not solving a fully mixed cube, it only appears mixed, it only takes about 4 turns to make it look mixed.
I think this is the fastest fooler on P&Ts show ever.
My favorite is his "millesecond" trick or whatever. if you notice, he has actually solved half of the cube (the red and green sides, possibly the top). He mixes up the other sides; the yellow and blue. When he flips it, it's simply the orientation so the solved sides show, but the mixed sides are still on the back, but not visible. He doesn't show the whole cube that time as it isn't fully solved. Still, great performance.
Yeah, the real trick there is to mix it in with the real solves, like the one in the bag, so you think it's solved like the others. Great performance.
Nah man. When he dips his hand under the table (misdirection with the "one handed") you can hear him solve the cube
from other comments, you can tell that the cube was made so it was like 4 moves away from being solved
You're not looking at the same one I am. look at the one where he lets the cube fall straight down into his other hand -- all above the table. He doesn't show the whole solve, just 3 (or even 2) sides. As Daniel Holm mentioned, because he mixes it in with other full solves / misdirections, it looks like a full solve but is really just a clever half-solve
A total let down. He kept telling us the main thing was to solve the cube in Teller's hands but he never does it. He cheats by changing the only thing solving Rubik's cube has ever meant. btw, he had both cubes in his hands before he handed it to teller and they didn't catch that?
He fooled them because they have never seen Rubik's cube magic before but this wasn't even slight of hand. This was cheating and a terrible "main event." I bet after the show and they thought about it, they'd be kicking themselves.

Amazing mix of magic and extreme cubing abilities! I can see how it fooled Penn and Teller so easily, you need to have a pretty good knowledge of how the cube works to understand that seemingly random shuffles are actually very calculated. The dexterity and mental fortitude it took to execute that routine is phenomenal.
Them having extensive knowledge on a shuffled deck, I'm pretty sure they know it's just a controlled/scripted shuffling of the cube and then reshuffled into desired position. They just dont have any magic terms to use for it, so it's just fair to award him the trophy

That one's actually the cleverest trick in the show. You can see before he drops it you can only see blue, orange, and yellow squares. That's because he already solved the three sides of the cube being white, red, and green. Very smart and I only noticed it when someone else pointed it out to me.

Rubik’s cube magic always blows my mind. I love when Penn and Teller immediately say they’ve been fooled but I also really like the feedback they give whether fooled or not.

The bright red is also a nice distraction. Catches your eyes so you focus on it more than the rest of his hands, if only for a second which as we know, is all it takes in magic.

There is nothing else. It's all about the presentation and performance. That's the real secret to "magic".
This guys is amazingly fast at the 7 move solve. It helps when you have a cube that has been set up for quick smooth solves. Its cool that he can do the moves 1 handed as with the bag trick. Thats why he takes just a few seconds longer to pull it out of the bag *he's solving it on the way out. When he tosses over his shoulder he sets the cube up for a 4-5 move solve and does it on the down and up swing of his arm *this one only takes 2sec to solve 1 handed, watch as he's ready to toss it, he sets the cube a certain way in his fingers to make the solve easier. And this guy is good at the algorithms of the cube.

Wow, what a great performance. I'm a relatively new cuber with my fastest solve being a minute and 17 seconds. I have a somewhat good idea how he does this magic but knowing how it's done and doing it yourself with such perfection are two very different things. You've definitely inspired me!

here he is, fooling penn and teller... yet the judges of americas got talent, whom i imagine know very little about magic, cut him? one of the most ridiculous decisions i've ever seen on that show.
Because this isn't magic. This is incredible skill, as a display. He's just able to put it into patterns which can be solved very easily, and solves them in split-seconds. It just looks like magic, but it's obviously not if you understand how a rubik's cube works.

Lian Elmore True, but I believe that the AGT decision was based on the fact that it was displayed as a magic act, but as a magic act, it doesn't work. It's a display of skill alone. There is no wonder of how it's done. It doesn't instill that "How did he just do that?" That magic acts are intended to do.

All magic is skill to an extent, whether that's slight of hand or counting cards. All he did was apply the skill any normal magician would do and applied it to a very difficult medium. It's magic nonetheless
The way he presented the tricks really set him apart from regular boring speedcubers. And to commit to memory the patterns of the cube on the table right after a trick, and then manipulating the cube to an exact copy is really impressive. He took a mere 6 seconds from 4:45 to 4:51 to get the pattern right, including the bottom face which he last saw a little over 2 minutes before that. A well executed mix of mastery and showmanship.
GameOfThrows he isn't solving these cubes. He has a pattern of moves he can execute quickly without looking. The mixed up cube is always in the same state.
Maybe he was following penn and for the moment when teller had to choose his cube, he already managed to give him identical cubes, that would make it a little easier for him to duplicate in the end
He isn't doing that though. Watch which cube is which. The one he takes is the one that Teller originally picks, because that's the one that Penn mixed up. The one he left there was the one he mixed up, and the one he had to match in the end.
This isn't speedcubing so it's not comparable. He's a magician using a Rubik's cube as his prop. I'm sure he's decent at speedcubing, but these are all tricks designed to fool an average person. Case in point, he wouldn't need to see the "bottom face" if he knew the 5 other sides. If you knew those sides, the last side could only be in 1 configuration. Any person who solves Rubik's cubes would know this, but not average people.
Man, AGT doesn't realize the awesome you really are, dude. Never EVER stop.
I'm the furthest from a Rubik's expert, but even I know he knew how many of what particular move he has made per side, or something to that degree. Kind of like "counting cards" but counting spins on certain axis's. Also, that "drop solve" he only showed colors the solved colors that were not shown in the mixed up colors prior.
Now, I'm not saying it's a bad show, it was very entertaining and fun to watch. And I am absolutely blown away with the mental capacity it takes to pull that off. Great show and congrats on the FU!

This has got to be the worst comment section I've seen for a Fool Us act.
He solves cubes quick so it's not magic? It doesn't matter. You people do realise magic isn't real, right? It's the illusion of making something appear to happen that isn't. Part of that illusion is his quick solving techniques.
The only time I believe the cube wasn't solved was when only the 3 sides were showing after the millisecond solve, which he quickly mixes up again. But it gave the illusion of being solved. Like magic, no?
To think Penn and Teller didn't pick up on how he was doing it or saying they don't understand cubes is just naive.
It seems everyone has completely missed the point of the trick, which is the finale. Penn was in control of one cube at the start while both were randomised. Teller made the decision of which cube to hold on to. If hazard a guess that what Penn and Teller are fooled by is the method he used to make the cubes match after they were in charge of randomising them.
I thought at first he did a switch, but Penn and Teller were watching his hands closely when they dropped out of sight behind the table for us. The last time looked really sus, but the view from behind doesn't reveal anything. Doesn't even seem a place to hide additional cubes. I may be wrong, of course. With hands that quick, nothing would surprise me.
The entire routine is a brilliant display of illusion entertainment. Sleight of hand and some true puzzle solving talent. Well done, sir.
Viscum the finale was simple.. he did give teller a chance to pick. (Teller picked the cube that Penn had scrambled) he then sais he's gonna solve it in teller's hands. Which he doesnt, at that point the video kind of skips. he got the cube that teller had picked and left the other one (the one he scrambled up in a certain pattern) there in the table. He then goes off with the show. At the end he just matches the pattern. If Teller would've picked the other cube. He would've just let Teller keep the one he choose instead of switching them out. Follow the cubes as he takes it from Penn and look at the pattern of the cube in the table when Teller has the other in his hands. And after the video skips that cube in the table is the same. Still an amazing performance.
Viscum what you said is so true, the way he did the finale was by continuously looking at the cube at the table and asks teller to pick up makes a joke about solving it but is really turning the cube so he can see the other sides of the cube and throughout the trick he makes small adjustments and finishes it off in the end in the open, but in saying that you have to be a freak at the cube to pull that off, amazing !
I think the issue lies more with the people who know how to solve rubiks cubes cause they can see through the illusion. All his illusions are obvious to someone who knows how the permutations on a cube work, but if someone doesn't, you just see a cube magically changing positions in ways that don't make sense. Its the same for any magic trick: once you know how it works, you just see the mechanics rather than the magic.
The point most of all is that any amatorial speedcuber isn't impressed at all in front of a performance like this and is able to recognize how every "trick" is done, so that performance in that show and, more, the prize for fooling two expert magicians, is just unappropriate. The production shoud have not even admit him to the show (but they probably did because they didn't have a speedcuber among them when they saw what he was able to do).
Here's the reason why most people think its not a good "fool". Rubiks cubes and the techniques associated with solving them are completely not Penn and Teller's expertise. Yes he fooled them, but not in traditional magic tricks. We all know "what he is doing" and "how". But saying "you are really good at cubes" is not a valid explanation of the "trick", even though that is essentially what the trick is.
I would barely call it a magic trick.
Amazingly good cube skills though.

I think I know the part your training about. I think only three of the sides (the ones facing the cameras) are solved. The other three are still skewed. Fairly certain they are not "legitimate" cubes. But I only saw the video a few times

the patterns are fixed. when you've been solving rubiks cubes your whole life you can tell by it. he shows us a random pattern, but then begins to shuffle it more....that is when he specifically changes the pattern to what he wants. now remember how he tells us a rubiks cube is deemed shuffled after 7 turns. well that rule apply if it's done in someone else's hand. what he ends up doing is letting them shuffle and then taking the cube back and changes it up even more. honestly it's such a simple trick but very effective
If you notice at that moment you can only see blue,orange , and yellow the other side he is holding (white,green, and red) so he just flips it over showing you the other half. the he mixes it so you don't see the other side
The cube is fixed. People that can do rubix cubes can a double move solve (meaning, they can turn one end once and the adjacent edge once with just their finger). The cubes he is using are not standard cubes, when fully solved they have 3 faces that are completely solved (solid color) and 3 faces that will be jumbled up. This way when he gets to one double move away from solving it, the cube looks completely scrambled on the other 3 faces. All he does is make that one move behind the back and make sure the cube faces the right way when presenting it.

You can always tell when P&T are fooled by their facial expressions, they usually display the same giddy puzzled and entertained smiles as the crowd, it's awesome, shows they really enjoy their craft
I love watching Teller, even before the "magic's" started he's already fascinated (watching Steven and Penn mix up the cube.) He just has a child's sense of wonder and I love it.

probably the best i've seen in this show. i've seen a lot of people getting really good with rubik cubes, solving them in seconds. I know this guy is just REALLY F'N good, no tricks, still, just better that everything else i've seen in this show.
Figured out how he did the last trick. The cube that Teller chose was the one that Penn mixed up. The other cube was the one that Steven mixed up. When he fails to solve the cube the first time. He takes away the cube that Penn mixed up and left the one he mixed on the table. He knows how to make that solution again. Now he starts playing with the cube that Penn mixed up. And by the time he does the last trick, they have forgotten about who solved the cube on the table. Now Teller is holding up the cube that Steven solved and Steven just simply recreates the solution on his cube while he is talking to Penn and Teller. If Teller would have chosen the cube that Steven mixed up then Steven would have simply taken the cube that was on the table not the one in Tellers hands.

yeach.. I think the whole show is based on configurations of the cube which look scrambled but are actually only a few moves away from being solved. But it´s still really dificult to get those few moves done right and quick.
In the case of 4:43 he actually doesnt do anything, the cube isnt´t solved. Only the three sides that he shows are solved, the other three arent, you can see this before he drops the cube.. threre are only three colors.

This guy was so magical, he caused Johnathan's hair to become short between videos on the playlist.
4:44 There are only three colours shown, blue, yellow and orange. The other three colour, white, green and red are already solve. So he spins the cube when he releases it showing only the solved sides. This is why he quickly scramble the cube after, because it is not full solved and the judges would notice.

When you see him do the 1ms solve he only shows you 3 sides of the cube the other 3 sides are covered up by his jacked and are still mixed. All he does is flips it over and before anyone can say anything he has started to mix it up for the next trick.
So he was able to fool Penn and Teller but didn't go to the live shows?
He is in the liveshows. They used a wildcard and brought him back

Chandra Mongilong No, actually he is just doing magic. If he was fast at cubing then you would see him solve, but I havent seen him do anything other than magic.

Here is how the "millisecond version" was done - he mixed the cube such that only 3 sides are completely mixed up and other 3 sides are solved. And he showed the mixed up sides and then turned it over to the solved sides. Done so fluently. Correct me if I am wrong.

this guys is like Kostya Kimlat but with rubik's cubes. There's no actual trick, he's just really really good with rubik's cubes and has incredible hands/fingers.
Finally solved part of this! He only solves 2 particular sides and when he flips it in the air it lands on the side that is done, then after showing the audience that it's solved he quickly changes it so they don't see the back of the cube that is unsolved, very quick and smart

I watched this long ago before I got good at Rubiks Cubes. Now that I can comfortably solve one and I know some moves, I know a lot of these tricks. They are really impressive and take a lot of skill for sure. I still have no idea how you matched Teller's cube though. I could watch this forever.

Wow. He must have memorized all 12 sides of the two cubes within two seconds where he rotates the cubes before he hands them to Teller to select one of them. Incredible.
He chooses which Teller has at the end. The one he first gives him isn't the same one he leaves with him.
So he did memorize the state of 1 cube, but it's the one he mixed up himself.

These aren't magic tricks. To figure out how these are done all you need is basic knowledge on how a Rubik's Cube works.
Yeah, that is exactly what a magic trick is. Replace 'rubiks cube' with 'deck of cards' and add in a ton of practice for both and it is literally the same thing.
I also saw you on America's Got Talent, and I can't believe that you were eliminated. Even though I knew exactly what you did, this was a spectacular performance! Congrats on fooling Penn & Teller! :)
Steven Brundage, I really love your work, and I figured out how you did all of your AGT judge cut tricks. Magic is just expertly done tricks and you do them expertly. On your judge cuts (btw I'm honestly shocked you didn't get through, go look at all the AGT comments, EVERYONE wants you back as a wildcard and is disappointed they didn't choose you), trick 1 you obviously solved it right before you threw it up and that was awesome.
Trick 2, 3 sides solved 3 sides incomplete thus explaining the 3 varieties of colour visible to the judges. You flip it and it gives the illusion of completion.
Trick 3 I'm not so sure on but I'll give it a shot
Trick 3: Did you memorize the 26 different locations where cards could be and then you only offered Heidi a limited quantity of cards? You shuffled through them slowly and she picked one of the cards that you knew would be inside the cube.
Otherwise some crazy quick slip in :P amazing work man.

McLovin You it's actually pretty good it's an algorithm that makes 3 sides solved and 3 sides a checker pattern really cool and how he used it was awesome.

Ahhh just love the look on Penn's face. He's dumb founded as to how thi guy did it. Not only that, the sleight of hand was completely out of this world, especially with the millisecond move 😍 . Loved the performance. Simply mind boggling.

He's setting it up right until he drops it. He doesn't have all the sides solved, just the ones you see.
