  • Mark Anderson remembers coming to Byron Dragway some 15 years ago with his dad. At that time legendary Byron Dragway track owner and promoter Ron Leek had a fondness for the Ford Lightning performance pickup trucks. Mark's dad ran the ford dealership where Ron would purchase the trucks and then have him modify them at the Anderson Ford Motorsports facility.
Jump ahead to late April of 2021 as Mark returns to the "Playground of Power" some 15 years later to test his '86 Ford Mustang. The temperature had cooled down overnight to the low 50's with light northerly winds, clear blue skies and low humidity. It was the perfect weather for making horsepower and with a freshly prepped track Mark took advantage and put on a show the whole day!
After the first of what would be 3 wild wheelstanding runs in a row, I just had to go check this mustang out! As I made my way around the car Mark came up and answered all my questions and explained more about the car. What really blew me away was the engine, which at first glance looks massive. Mark races the car in the NMRA/NMCA factory stock class where you have only 3 engine options. You can run a sealed stock coyote engine, an old pushrod 302ci or a 2 valve 4.6 V8 out of a F150 pickup truck. Mark's choice is the 2 valve 280ci 4.6 with stock heads and naturally aspirated with 380hp. Mated to a G-Force 101A 4 speed and a stock mustang 8.8 rear with a 4.88 gear along with very small M/T 8.5 wide rear slicks this combo just flat out works! #NMRA #factorystockmustang #foxbody

How is a stock 2v head doing such high rpm? Do the springs have to be stock?

Very impressive! ET does better than MOH indicates which shows this car works well. Clutch base pressure a little on the right side (you can hear the pull on the engine) so there maybe another tenth in there. Good job!!!

Wow that car need to go on slim fast bad there’s about 1k lbs of weight that can be removed from that car, rule of thumb is every 100 lbs you get lighter you go .1 faster so taking away 1k lbs would pick you up almost a whole second and be in the 7’s, there a lot of crash related crap in that car that’s heavy and you don’t need steel bumpers there heavy we made a sheet metal bumper for our race car we had a 67 full metal body nova that only weighed 1800lbs everyone thought I ran a fiberglass body cause the way it would shake I was sitting on my fender in the staging lanes one day and a guy comes up and asks me why I’m sitting on a fiberglass body I knocked on the fender and he was like oh that’s steel wtf

There’s a weight rule that dictates the vehicle weight based on what engine you’re running in the NMRA factory stock cars

Byron Dragway is a 1/4 mile track. The car leaves the line at approx 1:19 and hits the traps at 1:30. Easy math.

Byron Dragway is not downhill. The 1/4 mile track itself is all level, however the stretch from the shutdown area all the way to the sand trap is uphill, creating an illusion that the track itself is downhill.
