Alexis, so sorry you lost your grandma - I can relate to your situation. I lost my mom (she was my rock) at 18 and I'm not close to the rest of my family. Chosen family is where it's at. Definitely would love to hear your story 💜

Do couples discuss marriage ahead of time? Of course you are going to talk about it!! In every situation I am aware of (and I've known a lot of couples because I'm 52), the couple always talked about getting married before they proposed. Couples should always talk about big decisions together before deciding on doing them and this includes a discussion about if they both want to get married to each other. Yes, that is the usual scenario.

Marriage does matter in relationships because it provides a sense of security that allows each person to fully exhale and feel safe to be a deeper level of themselves that they would not be in just a relationship that is not "official". This is important for issues such as discussing traumatic experiences, dealing with conflict, and generally feeling emotionally safe with your partner. Let's face it, if you are holding back from the official commitment, then at some level, you've got one fit in the relationship and one foot out.
See, it’s all about perception, which is deeply personal and based on your upbringing, beliefs, culture and experiences. A relationship is official no matter whether married or not, unless it is hidden or not acknowledged by both, and marriage doesn’t even add more commitment these days looking at divorce rates. But again, everyone will have different opinions on it because it’s so personal. - L
@@AlexisLilian I completely agree, it is not the ceremony that makes you commit. I mean it is nice and everything but marriage is a human invention and yes, institution. It has benefits in society now but it has nothing to do with love. That's my opinion.

I agree that a piece of paper is nothing without the spirit of commitment to back it up and certainly to love someone is a decision that must be made every day whether you are legally married or not. But there is more to it than that. In our society (Western Culture) there is an ingrained meaning that is very difficult to escape...almost like an archetype. At some level, no matter what you want to believe about it not mattering, when someone won't make a legal commitment to you, it means something. Maybe in Lilian's case it is unique because she was raised in that situation but that's the only time I've ever heard of a relationship that refused marriage and ended up staying committed to the relationship long term. Something changes when you marry. That's when shit gets REAL. It tests you more than you expected. It requires you to grow more than you might otherwise. If you are truly committed to someone, avoiding marriage makes no sense.
@@hfortenberry my sister and her boyfriend have been living together for a very long time have 2 kids and are not married. I experience this testing after living with my girlfriend for several years. Yes, that is when the fluffy love is gone and when things get real and commitment gets tested
My grandparents didn’t get married and stayed together until death. My parents got married in a catholic church, and now they’re separated. Where I’m from, I’ve seen people get married to get US green card (permanent resident status), they stay together until the other person gets legal status then divorce.
