  • The valve spring brakes in the 2.0L engine which causes the engine to make noises. Or according to Subaru "it may stall out and not being able to start back up".
This problem is a Subaru manufacturing problem, a problem straight out of the factory. A total of 324 vehicles are affected from 2012 to 2014.
This valve spring problem has affected the 2013 Suabru XV Crosstrek, the 2013 Subaru BRZ, the 2012 to 2014 Subaru Impreza, with the 2.0L engine.
Subaru has recalled these cars to get the valve springs replaced with better ones that have been improved in terms of their strength and durability.
Subaru notified owners of this recall on December 28 2018.

A friend just purchased a 2013 Crosstrek so this was very helpful. Unfortunately many owners have experienced the fix being worse than the defect. Lots of valve spring recall horror stories out there...

Am replying here in December, 2021 about my 2013 Impreza, 87,000 miles. Decided to have this recall done and still have the original spark plugs and coolant, and it is easier to replace the plugs and all coolant hoses while the recall is done. My engine has been excellent until now, burns very little oil; did most of the oil changes myself. The dealer, Brewster Subaru in NY State, replaced my CVT solenoid pack in 2020 with 80K miles, and cat back exhaust system this fall. The car was running very well with the new exhaust parts. Incidentally, the correct number of cars recalled for valve springs is 165,500 with over 100,000 having the work done to date.
Update: Got the car back after 9 days, they gave me a '21 Forester as a loaner. Car is running very well now, with increased low end torque, so am happy with the results. They replaced the spark plugs and coolant hoses for just the cost of the parts, so was very worthwhile. Do not forget to order a new oil filter ($8) as they do not include it on the recall.

I have a 2016 Subaru Impreza. So far it's on its second CVT transmission and that's starting to whine and will need to be replaced and it has faulty valve springs causing the car to stall or act like it wants to stall usually when the AC is running from park and then when you go to give it gas this happens. Unfortunately it's not included in the recall and it's a 5,000 dollar fix. The car has 121,000 miles on it and the cost to repair the valve springs is 5k dollars because they need to pull the motor which I'm not going to do. Which mean I'm driving around in a ticking time bomb. The interior plastic trim pieces have started cracking and breaking off on the pieces where you adjust the vents, I've already had the cam carrier replaced under warranty because that failed and they had to pull the motor for that, I also had the front right wheel bearing replaced at 100k miles, the rear driver seat cover has tears in it from the inner springs poking through, and the left and right driver seat bolster foam is wearing out and you can feel the plastic now through the seat. These cars are junk!
