Merriam, why not go and get Kibbe certified for the channel? David Kibbe runs regular day-long small styling workshops for only $200 or so. Everyone in the group gets personally typed by the man himself and you see all the recommendations for everyone else in the group. He's done 10's of thousands of women and people love the results.
I believe props should go to Kibbe for originating this typing, he clearly has some profound insights into bodies and styles. That being said, I find Merriem’s take to be also extremely insightful in her own way and I actually understand and prefer some of her celebrity typing to Kibbe’s. I don’t think she should feel pressure to conform to Kibbe, I feel her understanding is well rounded and should be respected on its own merits.
I’m genuinely not reading gamine from her at all, I think her facial features are more along the natural lines with classic or ingenue essence but I think it’s harder to type yourself than others. I thought I was soft gamine but I’m like 9999% sure I’m soft natural I just have somewhat romantic facial features with some sharpness. To me; it read gamine.
Yup. This is why I discounted myself as TR to start with - I look nothing like anyone on any of the example lists! But the more I learn the lines, especially what lines in CLOTHING ACTUALLY work for me, (vs what I thought was TR when I first started learning) the more I can find truly harmonious lines and start styling myself the way I want to. I was going to suggest this as a video topic, especially for TR, as I feel like our lines are so subtle in what works and what doesn't - a little too loose and it becomes SN, a little too thick and heavy and it becomes SD, a little too "short" and it becomes SG. Especially when our lines are already kind of scarce in ready to wear clothing today, it made me a bit "desperate" almost to try and find something that would work when I just wasn't finding anything, leading to confusion when I tried to jam a SN or SD look into a TR box!
I want to suggest a video idea! Since the Real Life Body types series that you did was so inmensly helpful, you could email some of the girls on those videos back (I was on the Soft Dramatic one and I would love to help again) and ask them to try and photograph different lines and pieces of clothing so you can highlight a certain aspect instead of only having celebrity examples that are limited sometimes. For example, ask a soft natural one to wear soft gamine lines and then her own to show a particular aspect of their differences. I think that you could explore those real life examples videos even more! That can be fun and useful :)
@@paoroliaz1207 that would be nice too! Because in my category (SD) very often people are curvier, and me being quite thin I have a hard time feeling like a SD. Seeing other thin SD would be super helpful!
I'm a TR w. Short legs, and I agree with everything you're saying. Strange... I find myself watching people and typing them through the Kibbe lens so much that I almost forgot how I used to see people before!
I recently have that habit too! I wish more people know about this, because what i know from most of people I met that they usually buy clothes just because it looks good in the photo ,they rarely look at their own body type 😅
I think you look a bit like Jenny Slate (comedian). I was surprised your nose answer was wide! I'd have thought Answer A, sharp (edited to add, or D, delicately sharp). Because of the little tip and your narrow nose bridge. I guess you're going by the nostril width?
I see Jenny Slate a little bit! I always never feel like I look like any of the celebrities I'm told I look like though! But yes, I'd say my nose has some sharpness too. I don't worry too much about really specifying A vs B sometimes because in reality, it can be a combination of both. Like I said with Reese Witherspoon's jawline. My nose has width and sharpness, and actually Jenny Slate's has that too (both sharp and in some photos wide). But Tilda Swinton's nose is a true answer A nose. That's a thin and narrow nose!

How interesting. Zeta Jones has similar spacing of features but completely different vibe, more mature and womanly. You are similar only on paper. Next to Reese, although there are so many differences, you give off a similar vibe, more youthful. And the lower part of your face (your chin and lips) resemble each other too.
jennifer actually looks like a natural to me, idk.. her nose is broad, her face is broad, her cheekbones too, her cheeks are a little full.. maybe im wrong but she never striked me as a classic like january jones for example, or marion cotillard (actually soft classic but anyways)... shes is (imo) rather curvy.... maybe TR??? even SOFT classics like marion or naomi watts arent curvy like her..

I do think that Jennifer is a pure classic, because she looks best in simple lines. Kate Middleton is also a classic and I can totally see Jennifer wearing the same clothes as her and wearing her hair the same way as well.

Every other celeb comparison, I have to wonder if they're high?! How could one person simultaneously resemble Scarlett Johannson, Maria Callas, and David Duchovny? What Kibbe type is that.
Too funny! Yes, I don't think most guys would refer to your face if they're saying you look like Kim Kardashian. I'd still take it as a compliment! I feel like I could be told that I look like Maria Callas with all the people I've already been told I look like!

I definitely think that undercurrent plays a big part in mistyping. I think I'd get mistyped a "pure" Romantic pretty easily, especially when I'm overweight but I have a full bust and full hips, and my face my jawline is more blunt when I'm overweight, giving an overall rounded look. Yet I often get told that I look like a certain Dramatic celebrity (in the face) when I'm overweight. Odd for a Romantic, right? But I'm actually a TR and I think my slight yang undercurrent is most noticeable in my face when the I'm carry extra weight on the rest of my frame. I actually resemble the Dramatic actress less when I'm thin because my jawline becomes noticeably sharp/tapered (face shape is more like an inverted egg than a blunt oval/rounded rectangle). At a lower weight, my most obvious yang elements are my shoulders and long limbs, and my only celebrity references are Soft Classics and Romantics.

I agree. Bone not flesh. You can even see the skin pulling tight from under her cheekbones to the jawline in lines when she talks. An E cheek is very plump and soft and filled out, and does not "pull" in tight flat lines between the bones.
Cheekbones are different from cheeks! And certainly, I don't have Jenna Coleman (answer E) cheeks. It might also be in part the overhead lighting that I have, and not to mention I'm quite thin. So it's always 'do you have soft cheeks for your weight'....not 'do you have soft cheeks'. Of course you can see my yang cheekbones no doubt, and because my jawline is smaller, my cheekbones are even more prominent. You can take a look at some of my other videos with different lighting as well, and when I wasn't as thin as I am now (although I've always been relatively thin I'd say in my videos).

It's interesting because I'm often told I look like Marilyn Monroe even tho I don't (I'm a brunette with dark eyes), however we do have the same romantic type, short structure, soft hourglass figure etc thus why I'm being told we are alike

I used to think I was between soft gemine and romantic too, but now i believe I'm soft classic. I still have no freaking idea because I'm a very rounded wide soft body and a childish cute but moderate Scarlett Johansson like face. It's so hard to find out your type when you are this "style" (somewhere in between everything to the softer side)
Some people are easier to type than others. I have some of the same issues you mention. Just as an example my eyes are A ) My lips are either A or C ( never if the are just moderate or thin) Hands and feet answer E Jawline maybe D? Nose C Bust line B Waistline C Hips B or C .Rather narrow that way but flesh? C probably but I have added some weight so I’m not sure. That’s just what I am reasonably sure of ? 🙃😂 So do it can be harder if you don’t have a lot of the same answers for the questions like mostly all A’s .

I know what you mean about natural lines I feel like and look like an unmade bed 😂. I am about 5’1 1/2 but many have slightly broad shoulders ( for my height) they don’t always seem that way but my mother thinks they are and given my hips are on the narrow side that could be how it appears that affects the lines. A couple of older photos of myself I notice my face looks wider. I am starting to look at photos as I can easily be critical of photographs and judge better.
Can you maybe do a video on different fall and winter things for different bodytypes and where to look? I find it sooo hard to find outfits/clothes for winter/fall as a theatrical romantic. I feel like most of it is all for naturals
I'd have said C; her cheekbones may be B but the skin under them isn't especially tight. They seem like average softness over a sculptural bone structure.
I disagree, for someone who is petite and slender, she does have D cheek flesh on B cheekbones. Not A or B at all! Her nose looks like its between A and B though.

That's the point. Of course a TR can be cute, and a dramatic can be elegant etc.. But a TR or SD can easy switch to sexy. On the downside.. When they are not sophisticated clothed or styled, they can look tired or even messy. They require a bit more work to look put together. ❤️
Lee Chun ya like me I'm a TR but as a guy my main problem is that I don't look right in most mens clothing as it is rugged,boxy and relatively stiff so its tough to find mens clothing that has thin enough fabric, and is put together but ya I definitely agree that we all can wear whatever look we want no matter what the body type

You joking, right? Literally we only see Merriam's top body part, we cannot label her just by looking at this videos frame. Also, Merriam's cheekbones are B, nose B, eyes E, lips A, cheeks D, jawline E, shoulders A, maybe D. = Mixed type (Gamine). So just stop.
It seems your typing of your face alone is a bit confusing to your audience because, like you’ve said in other videos, you can’t just go by the face you have to take the whole body into consideration. Your face alone just does not read as soft gamine and I think it may be causing people to feel as though you don’t know how to type yourself, which then brings doubt to your ability to type others. I would suggest typing yourself fully in a video and maybe trying on your lines vs the lines people keep thinking you are so that we can move past this lol
It would be a nice video to type celebrity look-alikes to further the point of this video! People really think like similar hair/eye colour and skin tone means they could be twins.......
Hello~ Usually, I'm a silent viewer and never comment so I'm not sure on how to convey my point in a way where it doesn't seem rude. When you type other people it seems to be accurate and I can see what you mean when you are talking about certain features but the way you typed your face bothers me. I watched a lot of content on the kibbe types. As far as I can tell from all of your videos: your face as little softness. Your eyes are narrow & sharp (a), your cheek flesh is taut (a/b), your nose is sharp (a) also your jawline is pretty blunt which would be a (b). Am I wrong and this is just because of the way you do your make up (contouring)?
I see the same as you. I don't think she sees herself accurately, which is very common. I got other people to do the test for me and was surprised at the answers.
I think you're perhaps seeing her eyes as answer A because their outline is quite sharp (the inner corners especially). They certainly aren't narrow, closely-spaced, or straight. I would classify her eyes as answer D. As stated, their outlines are quite sharp, but the eyes have some roundness. They are upturned, pretty moderately spaced. I think spacing is more helpful in differentiating between sharp and blunt yang and soft and sharp yin though. They are yin with some sharpness to them. I can see her nose as B, though I can also see why a person would see it as A. It's got a bluntness to its outlines and seems to widen as the bridge goes on, though it seems rather narrow and straight at first glance. If you compare her jawline to her cheekbones, it seems quite clear (if I may be so presumptuous) that her jawline is more rounded than blunt. Her cheekbones have more "power" than her jaw, if that makes sense. Now, the facial flesh is something I struggle with as well, so this will perhaps be a learning experience for me. If we're speaking about volume, I would agree. She doesn't have much volume to her cheeks. However, if we are speaking of the visual feel of the cheeks, I can certainly see why she would type it as yin. I imagine her cheeks would be very soft if I poked them. As I stated, I'm still not very certain on facial flesh. Feel free to argue with me; I'm not the authority of Kibbe typing and can probably learn from your point-of-view!
I've been told I look like Anne Hathaway since I was a teenager but she's a COMPLETELY different Kibbe type than I am. Definitely can't dress like her at all!
Just an interesting thought: Merriam herself is a paradigm shift for people. A scientist (type/intj) explaining lines & fashion. It's an interesting dynamic/phenomenon. (intp married to intj. :)) Love this knowledge, very helpful. It cuts down on the choices one (being an intp who's not inherently interested in fashion, or choosing what to wear) has to make, while still wanting to look nice. :)
Love this - a good example of how the face doesn't make one's body-type - it's a part of it, but part of the whole package. Face and body all in one. I used to not understand this but now it's clear :-) Thank you!
I've been told I look like 2 ladies who look absolutely nothing like each other and nothing like myself: Taylor Swift and Angelina Jolie. I would be considered to have a square face and full lips, which is why I've gotten the comparison. The actual shape of our lips and bones are very different, however. I still have no idea why people compare me to Taylor Swift. It could be the cupid's bow. I've also been told I look like Junie B. Jones (when my hair was reddish), so I suppose we should take this sort of thing with a heaping tablespoon of salt.
I’ve been told I look like Christina Aguilera which is weird considering I’m brunette and have dark eyes, but she is a TR like me and our faces and even bodies are quite similar so it’s cool someone was able to pick up on that. I’ve also been told I look like Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma but I’m pretty sure she is not a TR, she looks like a natural to me. And just by my own observations, the IG model Madison Beer has almost the exact same body as me and I’m pretty sure she is a TR. I would say our faces are similar too in terms of bone structure and how dainty our faces look.

Amazing video as always!! Whenever I saw examples of flamboyant natural celebrities, they would have bigger lips and more prominent cheeckbones, where as I have flat and smaller lips and almost a baby face because my cheeks have a lot of softness to them which makes my jawline a little less defined. But I guess it goes the same way like Zendaya who is a flamboyant gamine but “has a soft natural face”
Zendaya does have the broad facial contours of SN, but FG overall? Her frame is thin and angular, but her features are not the grab bag of the gamines. And she's 5'10"! I know height is (usually) the first thing we can toss out, but her proportions don't seem FG. I would have said D/maaaaaaybe FN.
Marti Crazi interesting point! For me, it’s more important to see which lines suit the person the most, rather than their height or what type of face they have (of course, except when it’s super obvious even in their faces, but gamines are the most variant since they’re a mixture of opposites) and whenever I’ve seen Zendaya wear pure D, she just looked way to petite and like her bones don’t have the weight to carry the lines (similar to FN). Also, if you see her on her most recent show or ig posts, when she wears the gamine coats and geometrics, she POPS! Hahah, but that’s just my opinion 🤗🤗
They get massive cheek and lip fillers that totally change the look of their faces. There are several channels on here talking about the before and afters, its incredible the difference.
My celebrity “lookalikes” don’t really look like me and they’re all over Kibbe. I’ve heard Rachel Weisz (SD), Anne Hathaway (FN), Jackie Kennedy (she doesn’t look DC to me??), Britney Spears (SN), and Camilla Belle (DC maybe?). Basically I’m tallish with dark, soft, wide-spaced features. Celebrity comparisons have only made me more confused 😂

Jack Black I figured I was yang dominant. Dramatic and dramatic classic clothes seem too stiff, flamboyant natural seems too oversized. Soft natural and soft dramatic seem to look better on me, but maybe I’m totally wrong lol
This is exactly what confused me! I had thought that certain body types go with a certain length of face and a certain spacing of the features. In the last few days I realized that is not the case: Aishwarya Rai and I are both soft naturals, but her face is much shorter and much more evenly spaced than mine, which means she's got a lot more ingenue essence than me. I am so disappointed. :( I had thought, thanks to my softness, I should have more ingenue essence, but that's really not the case.
Could you do a video that shows how "different" people from the same body type can look in some other aspects? One body type, different length/spacing of features?
I've never had people tell me that I look like a celebrity, but I've had people telling me that I look exactly like a mini-version of my mom, or her sister now that I'm in my late teens (my mom looks much much younger than she actually is). Except I don't see it at all. She's a theatrical romantic, with an almost pure D body, with mostly D for her face, but a few A and B answers thrown in. Theatrical romantic lines are without a doubt the ones that make her look the most healthy, vibrant, and youthful I used to be a soft gamine when I was younger, with my facial answers being almost the exact same as Jenna Coleman's, and my body answers being almost the exact same as Aly Art. Except no one, absolutely no one thought I looked similar to either of the two women since I had very pale cool skin, dark hair, and green eyes. They all thought I looked like my mom because we both had dark hair, and pale cool skin. Around my mid-teens, once puberty started to work on making me look like an adult, I switched from soft gamine to soft classic. Retained pretty much all my D answers, but my A and E ones evened out to C answers. Now I find I look exactly my dad. We have the same body type, skin tone, hair color, hair texture, and similar eye colors. But no one can see it because he has a wizard's beard, and I, being a young female, do not. My body still isn't finished developing, so I am looking forward to seeing what happens. The reason why I say this is because I'm getting jaw surgery soon which will probably change my face a lot. I have an overbite that makes my jaw look like either E, D, or C depending on how much I hold my jaw forward to compensate. E = natural jaw line, D = my normal level of compensation, C leaning to A = when I hold my jaw to the position it *should* be in. The thing is, my lips and cheek answers change too depending on where my jaw is. If I don't hold my jaw forward, my cheeks look quite fleshy (E), and my lips look slightly full (D). If I do hold my jaw forward (all the way forward, to where it should be), both my cheeks and and my lips change to answer C. I've also noticed that my flesh is becoming less soft and more muscular as I get older, so I'm quite curious on whether or not the overall balance will change enough for me to go from soft classic to dramatic classic. (That was such a long comment oof, sorry about that)
Merriam, in my opinion, you look very noble. There was a Ukrainian actress Maria Kapnist (she was countess by birth), - you remind me of her. She was born in 1914, so almost no young photos of her can be found, but if you look up - you will understand what I mean. Very distinguished lady.
I believe in using celebrity “body doubles” rather than look-alikes for kibbe since faces aren’t completely always aligned with bodies anyway, and it’s the body that will tell you your type before your face does.
I'm a SD and I ALWAYS get only SD lookaalikes 😄 (Sophia Loren, Sofia Vergara, CZJ, Monica Bellucci) I think it's very curious that people that don't have a clue about the kibbe system can tell I'm a SD
I think it would be better to use photo of Catherine Zeta Jones in her young ages (before plastic surgeries). She had wide rounded and soft nose, thin lips and much lower and less prominent cheekbones.
I am learning so much... I like to analyse people I see out and about. I can jock what clothing would improve their look etc and know what is ruining their lines or understand why something works. Yet I’m still unable to type myself...I’m a natural classic gamine...w a hint of romantic! Time to take the kibble test YET again to see if my new eyes can find the correct answer. The Halle Berry typing as a soft gamine is odd. Look at how she dresses. She dresses as a flamboyant gamine and looks fantastic in them. I’ve been finding that the only way, ultimately, of figuring out your type if there is any confusion, is to try the clothes for the types you’ve narrowed it down to. The ones that just seem to look right and feel right will tell you. The hair and accessories as well. I thought I couldn’t possibly be flamboyant natural because I’m not as tall or seem to have as much vertical line as the typing suggests, but I did my hair all big and wild and found my chunkiest, non geometrical necklace and put it on with my outfit and BAM. It all looked perfectly in harmony with all of me. No wonder I hated wearing jewelry ! I was choosing the totally wrong pieces for me.
I feel like the "small, angular but soft" types are very confusing I don't even know if I'm Soft Gamine or Soft Classic or am I actually Theatrical Romantic? They are all so similar lol
Soft Classic isn't an angular type, its balanced with extra softness. Soft Gamine is mixed with extra softness. Theatrical Romantic is soft with sharpness.
Hmmm, I never would have typed Catherine Z. as SD. To me she is too wide and curvy for that, even when in her younger years and slimmer. I would have typed her as someone in the Natural or Classic type
If someone has high contrast features and wants to be more ethereal looking would they have to lighten their eyebrows with there hair for lower contrast if they wanted there hair to go with it i was just wondering that
I think you do have some ethereal essence, your eyes are quite ethereal. You wouldn't have to. I would say you could focus on eye make up if you wear make up (I forgot!). You could also go for other ethereal looks like elf-inspired as TR because of the added sharpness. You could take a look at Liv Tyler who is obviously a totally different body type but is a high contrast ethereal. But you can lighten your hair too if you want, and figure out the brows to make sure it doesn't look weird. I wouldn't recommend darker roots I don't think.
I have also tried to figure out Lisa Edelstein’s type . I thought maybe a Flamboyant Natural but her face seems more flattered without the more Natural hair style.
Kellie Gallagher I mainly know her from her Dr. House days and I always thought, she looked fantastic with over shoulder length, curly hair, which would point to natural, I think. Much better, than with the blow dried style, she had at the end. She does look amazing in tailored skirt suits, though, which is more of a classic look. And she’s really rather curvy...but definitely not a romantic. So basically, I have no idea 😄

Looking up celebrities with these titles brought up Catherine Zeta Jones, Oprah Winfrey, Liz Hurley and Drew Barrymore ...they all look different... But my body is very close to Catherine Z. Jones. I wear mostly Soft Natural type clothing as my waist isn't prominent- draped, ruching...and jewelry is always stylized flowers,leaves.. natural, Earthy.
Actually the very first time I heard about kibbe, I saw a pic of Naomi Watts as soft classic and I was like, wow that’s similar to my face!...when I did the test, it said I was TR. I was so confused...after like 2 years figuring out and then thinking I was soft natural instead, I found out with your help that I was right from the start, I was SC. So this worked well for me but I am sure many people use this and draw wrong conclusions. The celebrity that I have been told I am very similar to is young Carrie Fisher. I would like to know if she was a soft classic.
How about people who don't like their type and would like to break the rules to fit into their own unique styles? For instance, someone who qualifies as Gamine might not like shorter lengths or geometrical patterns but instead would like either Dramatic or Romantic, or Classic?

I feel like when FNs wear Dramatic clothing they look... unnatural (no pun intended). Like, they can make the long lines work but they have this hard, heavy, constrained, overdone look. As though their spirit was trapped. Whereas natural lines flatter the robust yet relaxed beauty of an FN.
Please, please, make a video MINIMAL STYLE FOR GAMINES with examples! Yes, gamines can look elegant and not fun at all in high detail, but how to make the MINIMAL look? It's something totally different!
Please make a video showing real examples of the lines in clothes, like pictures of clothes that suits every body type better. I really strugle to understand most of them in real life.
A question about using celebrities as examples - is it always safe to assume they are successfully dressing their body type? They are always changing their looks. I think that's why I hesitate to copy any one person in particular but reference their successful looks instead.
I have been curious about Jennifer Morrison’s type . I’m glad you addressed it . I had also wondered about the softness in Jackie Kennedy’s face but it’s not like a Romantics . There has been some thought given to the idea she wore her post First Lady styles more naturally. The less classic style. But I have never been that sure about her exact type.
I would like to see some ethnic examples! Noses are confusing-I think Reese Witherspoon’s nose looks round and soft-so I was surprised when it was sharp!! I’m looking at more the end of the nose, do you look more at width or slope-the nose trips me up!! People have said I look like Roseanne Barr, Rosie O’Donald and Loretta Lynn!! This video has answered a lot of questions for me !! My sister is certain that I look exactly like Sophie Turner and other people had also mentioned it. I see it too but because I'm short and she's very very tall it puzzles me (the fact that I have dark hair doesn't help haha). I guess she's some sort of dramatic and I'm TR. Merriam can you at some point make a video about your opinion on the fact that Kibbe doesnt use the true types any more like natural or classic, I mean, the pure ones? I might be flamboyant, but maybe just straight natural, and I dont understand why he gave those up.
I can only assume obviously, but I think it might be sort of like I don't use the neutral undertone because I believe no one is neutral because you fall to one side or another. So he might believe that you can't really be a Classic practically, infinitely balanced, you might be slightly, ever so slightly more yin, or ever so slightly more yang, so he got rid of the main types. I personally have seen people that I'd call pure naturals, pure classics, and pure gamines, so I keep them. Especially pure gamines. Like Audrey Tautou I believe is a pure gamine. She doesn't necessarily fit the body type description of either FG or SG and she seems highly mixed with not really a pattern, either yin or yang leaning, to any of her 'categories' i.e skeleton, body (flesh), facial bones, facial features. And I see pure gamine lines suiting her best. But I have yet to see a neutral undertone, so that's how I do things. Audrey Tautou also looks better with a pixie cut than a short bob (means she's more likely not SG since SG would be more flattered by the bob), and also doesn't look too great in boxy shapes as she does in even more precision fitted stuff (a sign she isn't FG). So I still use the pure types as well!

Funnily enough, Those who I have been told I look like actually happen to share the same main type as me (gamine): Twiggy, Audrey Hepburn, Emma Watson (but that was by a random Afghan guy on the bus for who all Northwestern Europeans probably look alike so i don't take that very serious) - all gamines. Our yin/yang balance and placement is actually pretty alike (in the face at least) so I can get behind it but at the end of the day, I don't *really* look like any of them.

@@merriamstyle Conclusion haircolour is a vague spectrum just like anything else. When is it 'caramel' or 'golden' brown and when does it become copper or auburn? When is it 'dark blonde' and when does it become 'light brown'? ps. My hair has mainly golden tones, very little orange, so if I didn't have the 'redhead complexion' I would really be rather a dark blonde or brunette.
I find myself gravitating to Soft Dramatic lines and sometimes experiment with soft natural .. but i'm so skinny, and all the soft dramatic examples are of women that weigh more -_- . I have a similar body type to tyra in her early photos...but does kibbe typing change with age? I'm so confused.

It seems that kibbie relies more on the facial features to identify each type rather than the body. I still have no clue what I am. I thought maybe soft natural. I have the same body as Catherine zeta jones and Angelina Jolie.(Short waist, tend to have a tummy, big bust, thin long legs). It’s referred to as “Apple” shaped ...but I’m 5’5”. A bit shorter than them. However, I always get mistaken for being much taller due to my long-ish features- Legs, arms, fingers, toes neck, face...yet my waist is short and less defined 🤷🏻♀️ I cannot wear tight tops. It has to drape.
Your description sounds like you're a natural. I wouldnt say kibbe relies mostly on face features. I'd say he relies on face, vertical line and shape and proportion of limbs way more than he does on the figure. Which makes sence, concidering the figure doesn't really affect the lines all that much when its covered with proper clothes.

Merriam, how can we "see" the bones under the flesh? There's a channel named "ASMR Psychetruth" where a woman often models swimsuits so we can see her body from different angles, but I can't decide if her bones are narrow or wide, or if her hip width is due to her hipbones or her flesh.
Personally, figure drawing has helped me see a skeleton like X-ray vision, lol. But if there's an easier solution to seeing the skeleton under flesh, then yeah I'd like to know what it is as well because it's tough especially in a static image.
maybe you're a 'very soft classic'. I personally believe body types are spectrums (which I'm not sure if that's how the official kibbe system works so to speak), but perhaps you would be flattered by SC, but really upping the frills and softness and waist emphasis.
But she's pretty. So take it as the complement it was meant to be! I've been told I look like Tori Amos, also totally untrue. You could have been told you look like Margaret Cho or Lena Dunham... Be thankful.

I have a 100% romantic body, but a dramatic classic face... does this make a gamine? Does this not looking like others/celebrities that are the same body type work for all types, not just gamines? I would expect that gamines look different to each other because they are a mixture of opposites, so they might have a different ‘mixture’. But what about classics, for example, as they are not too soft, not too harsh, not too large, not too small, so would they end up looking more similar to each other?

I'm a SD, and I always get that I look like Sophia Loren (SD) (which I couldn't agree more, I really do look like her a lot) and Lily Collins (FG) (which I can't see the resemblance at all, honestly)
Your videos are so great! I have been studying them like crazy, and am still confused because most of my answers are dramatic and classic but but I am only 5'5 and have tapered hips and long legs (fool everyone on this as I look at least 5'6 or 7) but my hair is naturally wavy (romantic) and it I need to show waist and wrists and ankles or I look lost. My hands and feet are long for my height and my accessories look better when dramatic... so frustrating .....anyone else feel like this? I am defaulting to Dramatic Classic because I like pulled in lookes with some tailoring .
There's a stylist named David Kibbe who wrote a book called Metamorphosis back in the 80's. I read his book, and then I just studied a lot of celebrities and their lines, and also had clients from whom I also learned a lot. The youtuber Aly Art also has videos on the system you could check out!

Merriam, why not go and get Kibbe certified for the channel? David Kibbe runs regular day-long small styling workshops for only $200 or so. Everyone in the group gets personally typed by the man himself and you see all the recommendations for everyone else in the group. He's done 10's of thousands of women and people love the results.
I believe props should go to Kibbe for originating this typing, he clearly has some profound insights into bodies and styles.
That being said, I find Merriem’s take to be also extremely insightful in her own way and I actually understand and prefer some of her celebrity typing to Kibbe’s. I don’t think she should feel pressure to conform to Kibbe, I feel her understanding is well rounded and should be respected on its own merits.

I’m genuinely not reading gamine from her at all, I think her facial features are more along the natural lines with classic or ingenue essence but I think it’s harder to type yourself than others. I thought I was soft gamine but I’m like 9999% sure I’m soft natural I just have somewhat romantic facial features with some sharpness. To me; it read gamine.

Yup. This is why I discounted myself as TR to start with - I look nothing like anyone on any of the example lists! But the more I learn the lines, especially what lines in CLOTHING ACTUALLY work for me, (vs what I thought was TR when I first started learning) the more I can find truly harmonious lines and start styling myself the way I want to. I was going to suggest this as a video topic, especially for TR, as I feel like our lines are so subtle in what works and what doesn't - a little too loose and it becomes SN, a little too thick and heavy and it becomes SD, a little too "short" and it becomes SG. Especially when our lines are already kind of scarce in ready to wear clothing today, it made me a bit "desperate" almost to try and find something that would work when I just wasn't finding anything, leading to confusion when I tried to jam a SN or SD look into a TR box!
I want to suggest a video idea! Since the Real Life Body types series that you did was so inmensly helpful, you could email some of the girls on those videos back (I was on the Soft Dramatic one and I would love to help again) and ask them to try and photograph different lines and pieces of clothing so you can highlight a certain aspect instead of only having celebrity examples that are limited sometimes. For example, ask a soft natural one to wear soft gamine lines and then her own to show a particular aspect of their differences.
I think that you could explore those real life examples videos even more! That can be fun and useful :)

I see Jenny Slate a little bit! I always never feel like I look like any of the celebrities I'm told I look like though! But yes, I'd say my nose has some sharpness too. I don't worry too much about really specifying A vs B sometimes because in reality, it can be a combination of both. Like I said with Reese Witherspoon's jawline. My nose has width and sharpness, and actually Jenny Slate's has that too (both sharp and in some photos wide). But Tilda Swinton's nose is a true answer A nose. That's a thin and narrow nose!

jennifer actually looks like a natural to me, idk.. her nose is broad, her face is broad, her cheekbones too, her cheeks are a little full.. maybe im wrong but she never striked me as a classic like january jones for example, or marion cotillard (actually soft classic but anyways)... shes is (imo) rather curvy.... maybe TR??? even SOFT classics like marion or naomi watts arent curvy like her..

I definitely think that undercurrent plays a big part in mistyping. I think I'd get mistyped a "pure" Romantic pretty easily, especially when I'm overweight but I have a full bust and full hips, and my face my jawline is more blunt when I'm overweight, giving an overall rounded look. Yet I often get told that I look like a certain Dramatic celebrity (in the face) when I'm overweight. Odd for a Romantic, right? But I'm actually a TR and I think my slight yang undercurrent is most noticeable in my face when the I'm carry extra weight on the rest of my frame. I actually resemble the Dramatic actress less when I'm thin because my jawline becomes noticeably sharp/tapered (face shape is more like an inverted egg than a blunt oval/rounded rectangle). At a lower weight, my most obvious yang elements are my shoulders and long limbs, and my only celebrity references are Soft Classics and Romantics.

I don’t think your cheeks are full at all. You have very defined cheekbones.
I agree. Bone not flesh. You can even see the skin pulling tight from under her cheekbones to the jawline in lines when she talks. An E cheek is very plump and soft and filled out, and does not "pull" in tight flat lines between the bones.
Cheekbones are different from cheeks! And certainly, I don't have Jenna Coleman (answer E) cheeks. It might also be in part the overhead lighting that I have, and not to mention I'm quite thin. So it's always 'do you have soft cheeks for your weight'....not 'do you have soft cheeks'. Of course you can see my yang cheekbones no doubt, and because my jawline is smaller, my cheekbones are even more prominent. You can take a look at some of my other videos with different lighting as well, and when I wasn't as thin as I am now (although I've always been relatively thin I'd say in my videos).

I know what you mean about natural lines I feel like and look like an unmade bed 😂. I am about 5’1 1/2 but many have slightly broad shoulders ( for my height) they don’t always seem that way but my mother thinks they are and given my hips are on the narrow side that could be how it appears that affects the lines. A couple of older photos of myself I notice my face looks wider. I am starting to look at photos as I can easily be critical of photographs and judge better.

I'd have said C; her cheekbones may be B but the skin under them isn't especially tight. They seem like average softness over a sculptural bone structure.
I disagree, for someone who is petite and slender, she does have D cheek flesh on B cheekbones. Not A or B at all! Her nose looks like its between A and B though.

It seems your typing of your face alone is a bit confusing to your audience because, like you’ve said in other videos, you can’t just go by the face you have to take the whole body into consideration. Your face alone just does not read as soft gamine and I think it may be causing people to feel as though you don’t know how to type yourself, which then brings doubt to your ability to type others. I would suggest typing yourself fully in a video and maybe trying on your lines vs the lines people keep thinking you are so that we can move past this lol

When you type other people it seems to be accurate and I can see what you mean when you are talking about certain features but the way you typed your face bothers me.

As far as I can tell from all of your videos: your face as little softness. Your eyes are narrow & sharp (a), your cheek flesh is taut (a/b), your nose is sharp (a) also your jawline is pretty blunt which would be a (b).
Am I wrong and this is just because of the way you do your make up (contouring)?
I see the same as you. I don't think she sees herself accurately, which is very common. I got other people to do the test for me and was surprised at the answers.
Well, she is thin, but im very surprised you say her eyes are narrow! They are moderately spaced, not widely, but definitely round.
I think you're perhaps seeing her eyes as answer A because their outline is quite sharp (the inner corners especially). They certainly aren't narrow, closely-spaced, or straight. I would classify her eyes as answer D. As stated, their outlines are quite sharp, but the eyes have some roundness. They are upturned, pretty moderately spaced. I think spacing is more helpful in differentiating between sharp and blunt yang and soft and sharp yin though. They are yin with some sharpness to them. I can see her nose as B, though I can also see why a person would see it as A. It's got a bluntness to its outlines and seems to widen as the bridge goes on, though it seems rather narrow and straight at first glance. If you compare her jawline to her cheekbones, it seems quite clear (if I may be so presumptuous) that her jawline is more rounded than blunt. Now, the facial flesh is something I struggle with as well, so this will perhaps be a learning experience for me. If we're speaking about volume, I would agree. She doesn't have much volume to her cheeks. However, if we are speaking of the visual feel of the cheeks, I can certainly see why she would type it as yin. I imagine her cheeks would be very soft if I poked them. As I stated, I'm still not very certain on facial flesh. Feel free to argue with me; I'm not the authority of Kibbe typing and can probably learn from your point-of-view!

Just an interesting thought: Merriam herself is a paradigm shift for people. A scientist (type/intj) explaining lines & fashion. It's an interesting dynamic/phenomenon. (intp married to intj. :)) Love this knowledge, very helpful. It cuts down on the choices one (being an intp who's not inherently interested in fashion, or choosing what to wear) has to make, while still wanting to look nice. :)

I've been told I look like 2 ladies who look absolutely nothing like each other and nothing like myself: Taylor Swift and Angelina Jolie. I would be considered to have a square face and full lips, which is why I've gotten the comparison. The actual shape of our lips and bones are very different, however. I still have no idea why people compare me to Taylor Swift. It could be the cupid's bow. I've also been told I look like Junie B. Jones (when my hair was reddish), so I suppose we should take this sort of thing with a heaping tablespoon of salt.
I’ve been told I look like Christina Aguilera which is weird considering I’m brunette and have dark eyes, but she is a TR like me and our faces and even bodies are quite similar so it’s cool someone was able to pick up on that. I’ve also been told I look like Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma but I’m pretty sure she is not a TR, she looks like a natural to me. And just by my own observations, the IG model Madison Beer has almost the exact same body as me and I’m pretty sure she is a TR. I would say our faces are similar too in terms of bone structure and how dainty our faces look.

Amazing video as always!! Whenever I saw examples of flamboyant natural celebrities, they would have bigger lips and more prominent cheeckbones, where as I have flat and smaller lips and almost a baby face because my cheeks have a lot of softness to them which makes my jawline a little less defined. But I guess it goes the same way like Zendaya who is a flamboyant gamine but “has a soft natural face”
Zendaya does have the broad facial contours of SN, but FG overall? Her frame is thin and angular, but her features are not the grab bag of the gamines. And she's 5'10"! I know height is (usually) the first thing we can toss out, but her proportions don't seem FG. I would have said D/maaaaaaybe FN.

For me, it’s more important to see which lines suit the person the most, rather than their height or what type of face they have (of course, except when it’s super obvious even in their faces, but gamines are the most variant since they’re a mixture of opposites) and whenever I’ve seen Zendaya wear pure D, she just looked way to petite and like her bones don’t have the weight to carry the lines (similar to FN). Also, if you see her on her most recent show or ig posts, when she wears the gamine coats and geometrics, she POPS! Hahah, but that’s just my opinion 🤗🤗
They get massive cheek and lip fillers that totally change the look of their faces. There are several channels on here talking about the before and afters, its incredible the difference.

Jack Black I figured I was yang dominant. Dramatic and dramatic classic clothes seem too stiff, flamboyant natural seems too oversized. Soft natural and soft dramatic seem to look better on me, but maybe I’m totally wrong lol
This is exactly what confused me! I had thought that certain body types go with a certain length of face and a certain spacing of the features.
In the last few days I realized that is not the case: Aishwarya Rai and I are both soft naturals, but her face is much shorter and much more evenly spaced than mine, which means she's got a lot more ingenue essence than me. I am so disappointed. :(

I've never had people tell me that I look like a celebrity, but I've had people telling me that I look exactly like a mini-version of my mom, or her sister now that I'm in my late teens (my mom looks much much younger than she actually is). Except I don't see it at all. She's a theatrical romantic, with an almost pure D body, with mostly D for her face, but a few A and B answers thrown in. Theatrical romantic lines are without a doubt the ones that make her look the most healthy, vibrant, and youthful
I used to be a soft gamine when I was younger, with my facial answers being almost the exact same as Jenna Coleman's, and my body answers being almost the exact same as Aly Art. Except no one, absolutely no one thought I looked similar to either of the two women since I had very pale cool skin, dark hair, and green eyes. They all thought I looked like my mom because we both had dark hair, and pale cool skin.
Around my mid-teens, once puberty started to work on making me look like an adult, I switched from soft gamine to soft classic. Retained pretty much all my D answers, but my A and E ones evened out to C answers. Now I find I look exactly my dad. We have the same body type, skin tone, hair color, hair texture, and similar eye colors. But no one can see it because he has a wizard's beard, and I, being a young female, do not.
My body still isn't finished developing, so I am looking forward to seeing what happens.
The reason why I say this is because I'm getting jaw surgery soon which will probably change my face a lot. I have an overbite that makes my jaw look like either E, D, or C depending on how much I hold my jaw forward to compensate. E = natural jaw line, D = my normal level of compensation, C leaning to A = when I hold my jaw to the position it *should* be in.
The thing is, my lips and cheek answers change too depending on where my jaw is. If I don't hold my jaw forward, my cheeks look quite fleshy (E), and my lips look slightly full (D). If I do hold my jaw forward (all the way forward, to where it should be), both my cheeks and and my lips change to answer C.
I've also noticed that my flesh is becoming less soft and more muscular as I get older, so I'm quite curious on whether or not the overall balance will change enough for me to go from soft classic to dramatic classic.

I believe in using celebrity “body doubles” rather than look-alikes for kibbe since faces aren’t completely always aligned with bodies anyway, and it’s the body that will tell you your type before your face does.

I think it would be better to use photo of Catherine Zeta Jones in her young ages (before plastic surgeries). She had wide rounded and soft nose, thin lips and much lower and less prominent cheekbones.

The Halle Berry typing as a soft gamine is odd. Look at how she dresses. She dresses as a flamboyant gamine and looks fantastic in them. I’ve been finding that the only way, ultimately, of figuring out your type if there is any confusion, is to try the clothes for the types you’ve narrowed it down to. The ones that just seem to look right and feel right will tell you. The hair and accessories as well. I thought I couldn’t possibly be flamboyant natural because I’m not as tall or seem to have as much vertical line as the typing suggests, but I did my hair all big and wild and found my chunkiest, non geometrical necklace and put it on with my outfit and BAM. It all looked perfectly in harmony with all of me. No wonder I hated wearing jewelry ! I was choosing the totally wrong pieces for me.

Soft Classic isn't an angular type, its balanced with extra softness. Soft Gamine is mixed with extra softness. Theatrical Romantic is soft with sharpness.

Hmmm, I never would have typed Catherine Z. as SD. To me she is too wide and curvy for that, even when in her younger years and slimmer. I would have typed her as someone in the Natural or Classic type

I think you do have some ethereal essence, your eyes are quite ethereal. You wouldn't have to. I would say you could focus on eye make up if you wear make up (I forgot!). You could also go for other ethereal looks like elf-inspired as TR because of the added sharpness. You could take a look at Liv Tyler who is obviously a totally different body type but is a high contrast ethereal. But you can lighten your hair too if you want, and figure out the brows to make sure it doesn't look weird. I wouldn't recommend darker roots I don't think.

Actually the very first time I heard about kibbe, I saw a pic of Naomi Watts as soft classic and I was like, wow that’s similar to my face!...when I did the test, it said I was TR. I was so confused...after like 2 years figuring out and then thinking I was soft natural instead, I found out with your help that I was right from the start, I was SC. So this worked well for me but I am sure many people use this and draw wrong conclusions. The celebrity that I have been told I am very similar to is young Carrie Fisher. I would like to know if she was a soft classic.
How about people who don't like their type and would like to break the rules to fit into their own unique styles? For instance, someone who qualifies as Gamine might not like shorter lengths or geometrical patterns but instead would like either Dramatic or Romantic, or Classic?

I feel like when FNs wear Dramatic clothing they look... unnatural (no pun intended). Like, they can make the long lines work but they have this hard, heavy, constrained, overdone look. As though their spirit was trapped.

Please, please, make a video MINIMAL STYLE FOR GAMINES with examples! Yes, gamines can look elegant and not fun at all in high detail, but how to make the MINIMAL look? It's something totally different!
Please make a video showing real examples of the lines in clothes, like pictures of clothes that suits every body type better. I really strugle to understand most of them in real life.
A question about using celebrities as examples - is it always safe to assume they are successfully dressing their body type? They are always changing their looks. I think that's why I hesitate to copy any one person in particular but reference their successful looks instead.

This video has answered a lot of questions for me !! My sister is certain that I look exactly like Sophie Turner and other people had also mentioned it. I see it too but because I'm short and she's very very tall it puzzles me (the fact that I have dark hair doesn't help haha). I guess she's some sort of dramatic and I'm TR. Merriam can you at some point make a video about your opinion on the fact that Kibbe doesnt use the true types any more like natural or classic, I mean, the pure ones? I might be flamboyant, but maybe just straight natural, and I dont understand why he gave those up.
I can only assume obviously, but I think it might be sort of like I don't use the neutral undertone because I believe no one is neutral because you fall to one side or another. So he might believe that you can't really be a Classic practically, infinitely balanced, you might be slightly, ever so slightly more yin, or ever so slightly more yang, so he got rid of the main types. I personally have seen people that I'd call pure naturals, pure classics, and pure gamines, so I keep them. Especially pure gamines. Like Audrey Tautou I believe is a pure gamine. She doesn't necessarily fit the body type description of either FG or SG and she seems highly mixed with not really a pattern, either yin or yang leaning, to any of her 'categories' i.e skeleton, body (flesh), facial bones, facial features. And I see pure gamine lines suiting her best. But I have yet to see a neutral undertone, so that's how I do things. Audrey Tautou also looks better with a pixie cut than a short bob (means she's more likely not SG since SG would be more flattered by the bob), and also doesn't look too great in boxy shapes as she does in even more precision fitted stuff (a sign she isn't FG). So I still use the pure types as well!

I am textbook FN and I still am not great with the most chunky jewelry that made me doubtful. I studied a bit and I seem to a) have a wide range and or an individual note in my FN-ness or b) Im really just somewhere in the middle. Doesnt matter, I watch the recs for N and FN. the N jewelry was spot on but FN clothes mostly. its not a big problem as long as you dont give up on the pure categories ;-)

Funnily enough, Those who I have been told I look like actually happen to share the same main type as me (gamine): Twiggy, Audrey Hepburn, Emma Watson (but that was by a random Afghan guy on the bus for who all Northwestern Europeans probably look alike so i don't take that very serious) - all gamines. Our yin/yang balance and placement is actually pretty alike (in the face at least) so I can get behind it but at the end of the day, I don't *really* look like any of them.

@@merriamstyle Conclusion haircolour is a vague spectrum just like anything else. When is it 'caramel' or 'golden' brown and when does it become copper or auburn? When is it 'dark blonde' and when does it become 'light brown'? ps. My hair has mainly golden tones, very little orange, so if I didn't have the 'redhead complexion' I would really be rather a dark blonde or brunette.
I find myself gravitating to Soft Dramatic lines and sometimes experiment with soft natural .. but i'm so skinny, and all the soft dramatic examples are of women that weigh more -_- . I have a similar body type to tyra in her early photos...but does kibbe typing change with age? I'm so confused.
how about sophia vergara, she's quite thin and SD? Tyra's body type stayed the same....the key is that she was always curvy for her weight.

It seems that kibbie relies more on the facial features to identify each type rather than the body. I still have no clue what I am. I thought maybe soft natural. I have the same body as Catherine zeta jones and Angelina Jolie.(Short waist, tend to have a tummy, big bust, thin long legs). It’s referred to as “Apple” shaped ...but I’m 5’5”. A bit shorter than them. However, I always get mistaken for being much taller due to my long-ish features- Legs, arms, fingers, toes neck, face...yet my waist is short and less defined 🤷🏻♀️ I cannot wear tight tops. It has to drape.
Your description sounds like you're a natural.
I wouldnt say kibbe relies mostly on face features. I'd say he relies on face, vertical line and shape and proportion of limbs way more than he does on the figure. Which makes sence, concidering the figure doesn't really affect the lines all that much when its covered with proper clothes.

Merriam, how can we "see" the bones under the flesh? There's a channel named "ASMR Psychetruth" where a woman often models swimsuits so we can see her body from different angles, but I can't decide if her bones are narrow or wide, or if her hip width is due to her hipbones or her flesh.
Personally, figure drawing has helped me see a skeleton like X-ray vision, lol. But if there's an easier solution to seeing the skeleton under flesh, then yeah I'd like to know what it is as well because it's tough especially in a static image.
Look at the shoulder bones, the elbows, wrists, knees, and ankles.

Does this not looking like others/celebrities that are the same body type work for all types, not just gamines? I would expect that gamines look different to each other because they are a mixture of opposites, so they might have a different ‘mixture’. But what about classics, for example, as they are not too soft, not too harsh, not too large, not too small, so would they end up looking more similar to each other?

I have been studying them like crazy, and am still confused because most of my answers are dramatic and classic but but I am only 5'5 and have tapered hips and long legs (fool everyone on this as I look at least 5'6 or 7) but my hair is naturally wavy (romantic) and it I need to show waist and wrists and ankles or I look lost. My hands and feet are long for my height and my accessories look better when dramatic... so frustrating .....anyone else feel like this? I am defaulting to Dramatic Classic because I like pulled in lookes with some tailoring .

What have you studied and learned all these?
There's a stylist named David Kibbe who wrote a book called Metamorphosis back in the 80's. I read his book, and then I just studied a lot of celebrities and their lines, and also had clients from whom I also learned a lot. The youtuber Aly Art also has videos on the system you could check out!
@@merriamstyle oh yes! I know about this book but I cannot find it nowhere.i also watch the videos of alyart and yes I agree that they are very helpful as yours. I made the house of colour analysis but they have only the 4-system seasons analysis, and the style analysis also and she told me that I am summer and ingenue. Kibbe types don't recognise this type.they call this type as soft gamine as you know. I am not short high. But I am ingenue. I believe that I could be deep winter . @@ambercotrone Yes I know? I looked her up. I really can't see it. Julia has a more long/rectangle faceshape while Merriam's more heartshaped, Julai has smaller eyes, more yang jaw, their colouring isn't even the same whatsoever.
