    I wish there was more information for the types when holding extra weight. When I'm not holding weight I enjoy being FN very much. But when I am I struggle, as I put it on around my midsection and tend to become a tall and imposing apple, and suddenly I'm not sure how to dress anymore.

Some dramatics can pull off the gamine lines, Taylor Swift, Zendaya… both are relatively thin so I’m sure that is a factor there

    Love it! Maybe it goes without saying but I'd love to see this kind of video for the other body types as well. ;) In some ways casual seems easier for Dramatics and Naturals because when you think of casual you automatically think of baggy, loose lines and Romantics can look especially dumpy if they're not careful. Something else I'd like to see a video on is the words you use to describe features. For example, large eyes are a Yin trait but prominent features are a Yang trait. What is the difference between large and prominent in this case? Very visible cheekbones can give angles to the face (Yang), but they can also create round cheeks (Yin). When you say a wide jaw, what does that mean? Is a certain feature's quality only relative to other features on the body? Your most recent video comparing the body types created a lot of questions for me. Thank you for your hard work!

    • @merriamstyle
      @merriamstyle  Před 5 lety +40

      Yes, I really need to do a video just explaining the KIbbe body types test! I think that's where I'd be able to answer your questions. My 'favorite' term is 'symmetrical cheekbones' which I think Kibbe uses in his book. What?! He uses the word symmetrical to describe classic answers, meaning, symmetrical between yin and yang, balanced, not too angular, not too rounded, for example. Don't let the terms lead you astray too much. Anything rounded and dainty is yin (this is why round eyes are yin), and anything angular, long, or wide, is yang (this is why angular cheekbones which are prominent are yang). Hope that at least answers some of your questions until I make that video!!

    • @unneighborlyarcades6356
      @unneighborlyarcades6356 Před 5 lety +5

      @@merriamstyle Oh, yes! A video explaining the test would be very helpful. There are certain things I am just dreadful at telling. I have the most trouble telling types of shoulders and cheekbones apart. Besides some obvious answer B shoulders, most look "sloped and tapered" to me. As for cheekbones, I can only say when they are prominent, but that says nothing of the shape.
      Another quite interesting video-if I may be so bold as to make a suggestion-would be one in which you analyze members of a category who don't seem as though they fit, as you did with Charlize Theron (though I do believe she's a flamboyant natural on the list provided on Aly Art's facebook). For instance, Mila Kunis is a theatrical romantic, but I would have thought her a soft natural. And I would have thought Carol Burnett a dramatic, rather than a natural (though her face does look "natural", her body doesn't seem so to me). Obviously, you aren't beholden to these examples.
      I'll end by saying I admire your artistic eye.

    Thank you for putting so much effort into this. If I could make a wish, it would be a little more variety in style. I'm a flamboyant natural and never wear leggings or tight fitting jeans with long tops.To me it feels a bit dated and boring, even for the most casual day. And I definitively feel that the whole flamboyant natural style is about NOT needing to " dress down" as we can actually pull off a more unique look, even when going grocery shopping. So while I naturally respect all who wants to wear this style, I wish for a little variety. So, please a few dresses, skirts and not so many yoga pants...

    I'd love to see a video talking about how weight affects types. I think this is a part where Kibbe seems to fall a bit short. Overall gaining weight seems to be only allowed for yin -spectrum of the types whereas yang types are portrayed as very skinny by nature.
    E.g. I think I probably have dramatic skeleton (tall frame, narrow shoulders, long thin arms and legs, longer face) but due to me not being very thin I look nothing like Keira and the other dramatics. If something, I end up looking closer to a natural type when gaining weight (which to be fair could be a possible typing for me too I suppose alongside flamboyant gamine). I currently type as soft dramatic 'cause of the similarities between Gwendoline and me (great video on her btw!) but I'm not sure if "dramatic with more bodyweight" would still be the better answer.

    I’m a little bit confuse about Pryanka Chopra, i remembre her being used un Aly’s videos as a soft natural and she look like one to me, I mean she fit the description, the broad shoulders, a little bit of waist definition but not too much, she’s “leggy” too, I don’t understand how she can be soft dramatic, she doesn’t even look that tall?

    • @Laura-vs6fs

      to me she seems soft dramatic, especially when she is wearing clothes within those lines. They just fit her. Also height is only one element and she does looks taller than she actually is. It is all about how it seems rather than what it is. I saw a man who was tall in real life, 185 cm, and that shocked me cuz in pictures he look around 170 cm, and he is a theatrical romantic. Arnold schwarzenegger is also a great example since nobody ever believed him to be tall cuz he has a lot of yin elements in his body, especially his shoulders.

    So, I took the test and watched a handful of videos, and I really don’t understand the goal for soft natural? Like, we’re tall and narrow with few curves, and people are recommending clothing that makes you look like a rectangle? Wouldn’t creating a waistline and giving yourself some shape be more flattering?

    • @americanfairy
      @americanfairy Před 4 lety +1

      Are you sure that you're a soft natural? I'm a soft natural and, from what I understand of the body type, we lack the sharpness of a soft dramatic and the delicate features of a romantic while keeping some fleshiness and curves. We have a wide bone structure not a narrow one. Even when we're underweight we're still wider than most other body types. I do agree that some of the tops recommended in this video would not flatter SNs at all. We do need some waist emphasis because we'd look like a shapeless blob without it.

I had no idea I was doing a kibbe technique but if you have an eye - which we all have - then you know what looks good hehe I've also met another dramatic and you can tell because deep V's and v's look good on them

    Merriam, I absolutely love your videos, and I think your amazing!
    I also have a question for you. I'm a romantic, i'm short, rounded, tiny shoulders, wider bones, short arms and legs, very delicate facial features, etc. But my style is very very different from the romantic lines that David Kibbe recomends, even though I "technically" might look my best in them, it's just not me. I like long draped clothing, long shapeless dresses, long wide pants, big sweaters, sharp edges, etc- kind of the opposite of the romantic lines. My style icons are Liv Tyler (natural) and Emma Stone (classic), I love their kind of relaxed, chic look. And in my own opinion, I look kind of good in that type of clothing (natural/soft natural lines). But i'm not sure...
    So I guess my question is; how do I wear/can I wear for example more natural lines as a romantic? How can I incorporate that type of style, without looking like i'm wearing... a bag and while still looking good? Because sometimes I feel like it looks good, but the kibbe-system is telling me different.
    Lots of love,
    Miranda

    • @merriamstyle
      @merriamstyle  Před 5 lety +8

      Hi Miranda! Maybe you're actually soft natural? There's sometimes a reason why we're drawn to the clothing we're drawn to. But if not, you can incorporate some of those elements into your romantic style. But remember something that may look quite tight on a natural may look baggy on you. Even a little less baggy will already give you the look you want to achieve. So you could go for those looks, but make small alterations (such as waist emphasis, and fittedness at the cuffs for example).

    • @merriamstyle
      @merriamstyle  Před 5 lety +7

      It's one of those things that's counterintuitive. The usual advice for body types is the exact opposite of Kibbe. For example, for flamboyant naturals, Kibbe recommends a strong vertical line as well as a strong horizontal line (a T-silhouette), when they usually have wider shoulders and already look quite tall. It's all about mimicking the shape of the body, not downplaying it. And it looks more amazing in my opinion+gives much better 'results.'
      For soft gamines and romantics, who tend to look shorter, he recommends cropped pants that show the ankle, while most others recommend that shorter ladies should try to 'look taller' by wearing longer pants with heels, or something of that nature. Kibbe+conventional advice doesn't usually mesh well.

    Boat neck? For naturals?? I don’t agree, because we have broad shoulders.

      Well it's interesting, sometimes I feel like they are wide, but at the same time, they're sharp, so I would say they're primarily answer A.
      I'm including my subscribers and their Kibbe types in my upcoming video, if you want me to use your photos in the video, and type you (wouldn't be a full consult, but I could tell you my thoughts), you can email me (merriamamani@gmail.com) some photos of yourself in different looks!!!

    Can a soft dramatic woman be 5'4?

    • @merriamstyle
      @merriamstyle  Před 5 lety

      Yes! Lucy Liu is a Dramatic and she's only 5' 3". Be careful though because it is uncommon as far as I know. Types usually fall into their descriptions (such as romantics are short and dramatics are tall), but there are always exceptions. Just as Lily Cole is a soft gamine (I have a video on her if you haven't check it out). If you're someone who hasn't found her type yet after some time, it's possible that you aren't the 'stereotype' of the type (eg, a shorter soft dramatic). So that's a long answer for, it's possible! Try the clothing, and that's the real test. :)
