Dude the story about the girl in a cult was honestly heartbreaking. Im so happy she found a way out and lives happily now.
I'm pretty sure that's the cult I grew up in. My sister rebelled and married an "outsider" (he is like another brother and my parents fully see him as a son now). I'm a young adult but am still living with my parents. However, even though I'm still living under their authority I now have a phone and that has allowed me to start learning a lot more through free access to the internet.

Girl I dated, her family kept her under their thumb...big time. They controlled her finances, schedule, who she can date, etc. So, when I started at the company, and she met me...she took a stab in the dark and asked if I wanted to get drinks, but she would have to ask her parents. I thought it was weird, since she was 25 years old. I figured she must still live with them, since it was a somewhat expensive city to live in. Nope. We go out, and she paid for the drinks, no sooner than 10 minutes afterwards, she gets a call from her mother demanding to know why she was at a bar and what she spent her money on. It took some time, but I got her broken free of her controlling parents, her life is set up the way she wants it, and she dates whomever she wants. She hasn't spoken to her parents in almost 5 years now. Some say I should have just left things alone, but to me, I did her a favor. I gifted her the freedom of choice.

I feel like if my mom wasn't there to stop him, my dad might have been like that when I was younger. I lived pretty sheltered already, hardly ever going to people's houses or going by myself anywhere. I wasn't allowed to even leave my subdivision until I turned 16. Not across the street, not to a friends house, not even to a store close by. No after school activities. I've had social anxiety for as long as I can remember, and it's still taking a bit of effort to get it out of me for good.

There's just red flags everywhere, especially about the family's "courtship rules." Boundaries in a relationship should be between the people in the relationship, NOT their family members. I feel so bad for that girl, and that boy despite how pathetic he is, and it overall just physically hurt to hear the entire situation. For the cult story, I'm so glad OP was able to get out of there and be happy with someone she actually loves! I would love to know more about the cult and what it's called. Obviously it is horrible situation, but I genuinely find cults a fascinating subject to read about. I'm a writer and have a lot of writer friends, so we all read up on a lot of subjects so that we can be as realistic and accurate as we can be in our works. Also we're kinda just a bunch of nerds who love psychology, humanities, history, theology, etc. I think it's actually pretty interesting and fun trying to understand what humans are capable of, what they have/are done/doing, and why they do what they do, even if there's a good chance as a species we'll never completely know- especially in my lifetime lol.

If she had previously shown disinterest in him despite his apparent "falling in love" with her, then I can understand why he'd want to ask if it would be worth his effort. Cults are.... Wierd. Some (most) of them are dangerous, but some are actually quite harmless. But again, most cults are harmful and utterly stupid.

Anyone who thinks that males and females can't have non-romantic friendships are living in a dream world. They need to grow up and buy a clue. My best friend is a guy from my high school days. I even tried coming onto him once when I was drunk (and *STUPID* ) but he shut it down immediately knowing it would interfere with our friendship. Next morning I couldn't believe what I had done. That would have likely killed that friendship dead. Thank the stars he saw that and didn't react with lust. I love him to pieces; like a brother.

1. Women were not property. They had rights, it is just that they were believed to have duties to their families that were different from the duties of their brothers.
2. There were real reasons for everything beyond "god says." There were empires that were created because a duchess married a duke she had never met, thus placing her eventual great great grandson as the heir to the HRE, France, and Spain all at the same time.
