As a neutral, I do sometimes wish that Gerrard had moved to Chelsea back in 2005. He was so close to going and even personally handed in a transfer request, despite having won the UCL only a couple of months earlier. If he had moved, when Mourinho and that Chelsea team were at the height of their power, Lampard and Gerrard could have formed an amazing partnership, with the help of time and a manager like Mourinho. Then I’m sure the England team (despite having rubbish coaches like Erikson, McLaren and Capello) would have been incredibly powerful during that ‘02 to ‘10 golden generation period with the Lampard-Gerrard backbone in central midfield, and could even have won something.
It would have been similar to Xavi and Iniesta who both played for Barca and helped lead the dominant Spain side from ‘08 to ‘12 to three successive trophies. It’s a big shame. But that’s not to take away from what Stevie did at Liverpool, and Frank at Chelsea. Both are legends at their respective clubs, and honestly it is weird to think of Gerrard in a blue shirt. But it’s nice to think of what could have been.
    Brighton fan btw.

I don't think the two above me realize that Carrick just wasn't the same player as Scholes. Carrick was the far better defender, tackling, reading the game defensively, knowing who to mark, he was far better than Scholes. Obviously Scholes on the other side of the ball was much better but Carrick didn't have a pass on him to say the least. Carrick could've mopped up in behind those three, far better than the level Scholes could of. And as a United fan, if I can only pick one player out of Scholes and Carrick to play behind Lampard and Gerrard then Carrick was just the better fit.

You just argued vs your own flawed argument when pointing out the rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona. And yet, Spain won 3 tournaments in a row with a team made up predominantly from those two clubs. English players just weren't good enough. If they were, they'd have at least made a final. Look at Italy. Should've won euro 2000 and won the World Cup in the period. In the same period, Lazio, Roma, milan and Juventus won league titles. All clubs with long held rivalries and yet class came thru. Look at France. A country known for infighting at tournaments (1996, quali for 1994 and the farce of 2010. Yet they won a World Cup and euro's. Why? because they had genuine world class players. @@edmondsimon9220

Exactly. McClaren changed the formation in the Croatia Zagreb game with Parker playing and I think we were even worse.
In the home game with Croatia played 451 1st half 2-0 down. Second half reverted to type and played 442, much better but the damage unforutunately had already been done in the 1st half.
So this whole changing the formation thing I agree is a myth.

Capello was a successful manager he proved that with his club management. So again further proves that it wasn't Capello that was the problem.
I think the problem was just bad luck like I say Rob Green howler against USA, disallowed goal against Germany, losing Rio Ferdinand etc.
