People forget, our "Golden generation" included Danny Mills, Matthew Upson, Wayne Bridge, Gary Nevil, Darius Vassel, Emil Heskey, Theo Walcott, Trevor Sinclair, Paul Robinson and Peter Crouch... We had a golden midfield and 3/4 quality defenders, one who refused to play with the other. Add to that, a pair of-on their day world class-but injury prone strikers. A "golden generation" which failed to qualify for Euro 2008.

The biggest problem with England is keeping the ball throughout the years. Even when you look back at our good sides in 1990, 1996, 1998. We haven't been able to have the highest possesion against the best sides. The best teams, like Germany, Brazil, Argentina, France, Spain etc don't have that problem. That's why we don't win tournaments. I remember even when we played Holland in 1996 and beat them 4-1 we still didn't have the highest possesion. That come back to bite us since. We had low possesion against Spain and won by a penalty shootout in 1996. We were over rated.

@@paulearl8203 Everybody talking about it understands what it means. We're just saying it's embarrassing for England to call a side that never won anything a "golden generation" and that the reference needs to die. England have spent more money on football than any other country in history, and yet has 1 World Cup from before the moon landing, whilst kids from shanty towns in Brazil have 5. The concept of that England side being a golden generation is a handicap that needs to die. Instead of acting obtuse and refusing to understand what everyone's talking about, reflect your own desire for understanding onto yourself and comprehend what's being said. Not everything people say is to be taken at face value or as shallow as you've chosen to understand it.

@@tharcisse7103 you're the one seeing the word " golden " and taking it in a shallow way. It's relevant to each side. It's not saying they're golden as opposed to other sides. You realise that right? It's England's golden generation. Belgium have there's now. Hell this is Luxembourgs golden generation. That's the term. Not every side with a golden generation wins something ha. Andy Cole doesn't get it. You don't get it. You simply can't seem to wrap your head around the term. Turkey had there's in the early 00s. It's relevant to each side. Do you understand now? It's not bigging up England or comparing comparing to anyone else. Simply was our generation where we had a collection of world class players all at the same time. They were a failure in terms of results they should have achieved. But that's irrelevant. Belgium have there's now and are being described as such and have won nothing. You people seem incapable or unwilling to grasp the term and can't look past which side is the best or the word golden. The only team R9 didn't score against was England. England lost 2-1 to them. Germany had an easy run to the final and got beat 2-0. It doesn't matter at all now. England weren't good enough to win. But I guarantee England would have got to the final if they had Germany's run and would have been favourites if they faced Germany. Who only 9 months earlier England had beat 5-1 in Germany's own home ground. Just unlucky to get draw against Brazil in the quarter finals. Frankly unlucky that freak freekick went in as well.
