Ronaldo is also a cultural Icon in football and beloved by most every fan for his talent. Plus, R9 was at Barcelona when Bobby Robson was the manager there. Barcelona's board was shambolic in the mid to late '90s after the Cryuff debacle. They hired Bobby Robson who won a treble I believe and brought in the likes of R9 and still got pushed upstairs to the boardroom, effectively firing him and hiring LvG. That same boardroom would sell Figo, their captain, to Real Madrid. Plus R9 would go to Madrid in between his stops in Milan and when he was at AC, he was out of shape and largely ineffective.

Cole never had an issue with utd fans because he played at his peak of his career with utd. He won them a champions league after so many years and was part of the treble season, so I think every utd player in that period will be remembered fondly irrespective of where they went after.
Furthermore regarding Man city, Cole left for City at the end of his career well past his peak so there was no animosity from utd due to that first reason. Secondly it wasn't like Cole was leaving for City who were competing with utd for top place in the EPL, which would have changed the outlook, and thirdly he never went directly to city from utd. So there are many reasons.

@Ajmal Ali have you watched lukaku play last 2-3 games ? Big chances missed , that's the difference with him and Cole. Cole would have put them chances away in his sleep no matter what club he played with . Also Cole was unplayable at Newcastle. Look up his stats there.

Don't be so hard on Lukaku he's a great player, sure Andy Cole is a absolute legend, but Lukaku is a apart of the greatest international team his own country has ever seen and he is making strides every season at United so someday I could honestly see him up there next to Cole.

Lukaku doesnt come close to Cole i dont hate lukaku btw i just think he is bang average and shouldnt be our 1st choice striker his touch is awful for a P.L footballer my 7 year old Grandaughter has a better touch, going by your comment you have not seen Cole very much if thats your view

if you win a tournament with England that is the greatest achievement for any footballer ever. as long as I dreamed of being a footballer, lifting something for country and getting that adoration from your home country must feel fantastic, to be celebrated as a nation even just for a moment.

Next season he scores 34 prem goals in 40 games in first full season in Prem - now that is hitting the ground running!!

There was a stigma with being a United player when it came to England. If that sounds ridiculous and childish then that's because it was. United players felt a bit disconnected because they would be treated differently, almost as if England fans didn't want to like them.
Andy Cole did not get a call-up for England for World Cup 98 because he wasn't even a contender. The following year he won the Champions League, scoring away at Barcelona, Juventus etc. A joke situation.
