      I did the same back then, first with cheap russian pocket watches (it's great because of the bigger parts) than I bought a bunch of cheap soviet wristwatches to learn more, than I jumped to the more delicate ones, when I had the belief in myself 👌🏻

    Love your videos in general man but this series is really interesting. My mind is kind of blown by the cost of these watches compared to the tiny machined parts. I know the watches aren't high end but the parts are the part. 40 bucks for an automatic watch seems nuts even if it's inaccurate.
    I know technology and methods today make it a lot easier and cheaper to machine parts, but it makes me think about Breguet and how he created his movement over 200 years ago. No electricity, no CNC. No fine laser cutters. It's really amazing when you think about it.

    • @HorologyBiology
      @HorologyBiology  Před 5 měsíci +2

      Thanks for watching 🙏🏼 I think Breguet would be turning in his grave a little though 😅 it is mind blowing though how they used to do it. This is why I seriously admire the very few watchmakers out there that still produce very low numbers using the original traditional methods. I wish I had those kind of skills.

    Good job Mat, these cheap Asian movements are tricky to work on sometimes - here's hoping you get a nice jump in subscriber numbers! One question though - the magic of editing shows you took like 10 seconds to fully seat that huge bridge. Be honest, how long did it really take? 😀

    • @HorologyBiology
      @HorologyBiology  Před 5 měsíci +2

      Cheers Alan, hope you're doing well mate 👍🏼 haha about the bridge. To be totally honest it didn't take that long as it wasn't as bad as it looked as all but 1 of the wheels could be nudged as there was access. The main one that caused a little bit of extra assistance was the escape wheel as it really needed a tad bit of a longer pivot on it imo.

    Happy new year! Here in the US, fireworks have been part of new year's celebration for as long as I've been alive, but like there, recently it's gone super max! It's always been firecrackers and such, just small, personal things, but last year and this year in particular I noticed a big shift, and realized that many of my neighbors are far more wealthy than I, haha. Hours of large mortars going off, boom... BOOOM!! Boom.... BOOOM!! Shaking windows and setting off car alarms. Crazy times!

    That movement is nothing else than a Dixmond Guangzhou (DG) 2813. Which is a kind of clone of the Miyota 8215.
    The final plate is tricky to put in place, and there's a trick to do: rotate the triangle of the click spring and you'll remove the pressure on the reversing wheel, helping A LOT to put back that plate :) Then you can rotate it back in position after the plate has been secured and voilà!
    Before removing the balance, I prefer to open/remove the antishock spring and then remove the balance stones. Then yes, the balance and then the rest :)

      Gives me a neat idea, though. I think too many people don't get enough quality practice before diving in to valuable pieces. Maybe it would be good for someone to take a few of these cheap movements and do full revisions, like a maker. Polish all the screws, finish the visible surfaces, tighten up the finish on the case, etc, and practice what it takes to create some of those finishes. Then taking extra steps to protect them will just come naturally, since it's time and sweat invested. 🤷‍♂️
      Once someone has polished a few screws, they'll probably become a lot more aware of the impact of their screw driver. (Or the flats on a caseback 🙈)

    Thanks for the video! I am surprised that this watch seems to be way better quality than the Aliexpress one. Expected the complete opposite to be completely honest. Also great idea with learning how to work on a watch with this cheap one. I will order one and try the surgery myself. I have managed to repair a couple of iPhones and other electronics as well as many car engines before so this will be a nice challenge. As I've said before I am not into watches at all but I am into the mechanics! We will see how it goes, probably not very well the firs time :D

    Hey everyone, I have one of those in my drawer. Handsome watch, but it does stop between 10PM and 2AM. Most likely to a poor oiling job at the factory. It is also on the loud side. Not sure if I will ever treat it with a proper service. Unfortunately my butter fingers prevent me from taking up the task of maintaining the mechanism on my own. Thank you for great video!

Nice result👍

    It seems like a DG2813 movement, which is a clone of the Miyota 8215. Not 100% clone but very close. This automatic movement commonly appeared in many low end chinese watches especially replica watches. You can actually but these cheap movement for like 10 to 15 US dollars. They CAN be reliable, but they are a gamble, hit or miss. Some says it won't last longer than 6 months, some says it lasted for years and years, 5 or more.

    • @avronaut
      @avronaut Před 4 měsíci +2

      @@HorologyBiology It makes sense and you know it too. A Rolex for 10,000 dollars has a material value of less than 10 dollars. Rolex produces around 1 million watches a year with fewer than 10,000 employees. On average, this works out to 17 hours per clock. Now you can calculate for yourself how much it costs Rolex to produce a watch. Even at $100 per hour worked around $1700. By the way: You can get good automatic watches with sapphire crystal for €100. So only one hundredth of a Rolex. A Ford Fiesta costs $20,000. So a Ferrari would have to cost $2 million for your comparison to be correct.
