- Horology Biology takes on a watch service restoration challenge. The cheapest automatic watch on AliExpress. Can I make it run better than it did out of the box?
The Fngeen automatic Rolex Submariner copy watch is available on Ali Express for a mere $17! Is this a lot of watch for your money or totally not fresh?
*Guys... For clarity for some illogical reason I stated 1300 oil for the capstone on the voiceover. As most of you will already know from my other videos It is 9010 oil that is used & should be always used. (and was used).

I was about to comment on that!!!
@@MyRetroWatches I bet you were lol
Liked and subscribed :) Fgeen Good content! Keep up the good work mate! / Oskar from Sweden
I would love a change to win a omega watch. So I did what you asked. Not expecting to win as i have never had that much luck in random win contest’s :) anyway love the channel and I will be following anyway!
Good content, so, I'm here. Waiting for Omega :).
For $17 you could buy that automatic just for practicing your watch mending skills. Great to watch, something different. Cheers Horology
Exactly right Francis. I really do recommend very cheap watches like this for people to practice on as the fundamentals are the same in much more expensive watches. Thanks for watching 👍
Whereas someone like me, would buy all the needed tools and cleaners and lubricants etc. Buy the watch. Begin to very carefully take it apart... then realize I failed entirely to grasp beforehand what a monumental undertaking it is to even take it apart without catastrofically breaking it in the process. Then if I managed to take it apart, I would then realize I failed entirely to properly document the process of taking it apart so I would have NO CLUE how to put it back together again and ultimately it would be a pile of parts collecting dust. Yet another tribute to the pile of things I have failed at more times than I care to count.
@@sideswipe147lol. You’ve described my journey exactly 🤣. I have a lovely disassembled Raketa
I was thinking the same thing. Buy three and get one going again.
I would love to have one of theese cheap ass watches but swap the internals from a fancy watch with damage to the frame just to troll people, i'd keep the sphere and arrows tho, everything else visual would be from the cheap one. Thoose who wouldn't know wouldn't care, but the ones who do would freak out XD
This watch is the perfect choice for someone wanting to practice their craft
Great for a learner
Seems like better value for money than any luxury watch
I wouldn't go that far 😂
Thats why I stopped buying genuine and tried the super clones. Unbelievable likeness.
@@HorologyBiologyLet's be real, people aren't buying luxury watches for their quality or superior movements. They're buying it for prestiege or talking points, the talking point may be it's superior movement but the customer does rarely care.
Maybe about as accurate as the average Rolex.
Honestly $17 for a movement is a good deal!
Agreed
0:19 Spring bar go "weee!"
👍🏻👍🏻 I know right
i would say it went fngeeeeeeen
Buy the watch for $17, spend $500 getting it to run properly, classic.
Amazing how easy you made that look
Thanks for watching 👍🏻
"FNGEEN" isn't a name, it's the sound someone makes when choking on a grape.
hahah that's a new one
I got Fngeen when I visited a brothel, luckily some antibiotics took care of it. No more redness and itching
@@henrylee8510 🤣
sounds like a noise I made on my ring camera when I fell down my porch steps drunk.

While we all love to bash China and Aliexpress for cheap products, I think we should give due credit to Chinese manufacturing for producing this time piece and other products at such a cost that any one can buy , enjoy or smash these gadgets. One would agree that before China became a major producer of RC hobby products, that field was prohibitively expensive. Now almost every one who wants has some form of RC toy, high power led lights and very cheap fun toys and gadgets.
Very true but I do think their working conditions are probably pretty dire
Hi I’ve just found your channel. I’ve watched a few of these type of videos from other watch repair guys. This is the first time I’ve seen someone buy the cheapest automatic watch on Ali express which I found very interesting . I look forward to watching more of your videos
Thanks for watching it. I have many more high end watch video to chose from :)
Fascinating! Thanks for the look inside of a (dirt) cheap automatic. Hard to believe there was no oil or grease inside.
I guess it's all down to saving money/cutting corners
Timing grapher dont lie. Work shows when you do it right. Your effort on a cheapy is much appreciated.
Thanks for watching 👍🏻
I’m glad this video blew up a bit you deserve it dude. Fresh content.
Thanks so much 👍
First time I've ever seen someone take apart a watch. Brilliant. Thanks for sharing. Liked and subscribed. John
Thanks for watching 👍🏻👍🏻
Respect to the hundreds of Asian workers who made this precision device for a pittance. At the same time they did, my local car shop was getting $180 per hour + tax to plug in their computer onto my car. In essence a fully finished and shipped watch for 5 minutes of their time. Always be thankful to be born in a richer part of the world.
Everyday 😞
I think of myself as a technical guy, but there are 2 things in this world which I never understand no matter how much videos I watch. Automatic gearboxes and mechanical watches. I know how rockets work, engines, 2 stroke, 4 stroke, 2 stroke diesel, Wankel, anything. But these two are alien technology to me. Thars why i'm so fascinated and watch as much as I can.
Everyday is a learning day when it comes to working on watches. For the record automatic gear boxes go over my head. I think each gear has it's own clutch no?
@@HorologyBiology There are a number of different automatic gearboxed, with there being at least 5 completely different technologies even behind it. Same how a watch is a watch, it can be quartz, mechanical, automatic, springdrive and what have you :)
It was the same for me as well almost magic until I started servicing them then you sorta understand the simplicity of them.
Its amazing how his screwdriver is more expensive than the watch 😂
🤣 you are right to be fair
I'm always amazed with the inner workings of a mechanical watch...even an inexpensive watch. A very informative and entertaining video!
Thanks for watching! Super appreciated
Honestly these are perfect for practice pieces (aside from the ease with which the parts break). Awesome stuff once again
Thanks a lot!
Always appreciate your fresh perspectives!
Many thanks 💪🏻💪🏻
Seems like a decent watch for a beginner to practice taking a watch apart and putting it back together again.
Exactly
supposedly a lot of these Chinese firms use random letters as their brand name cos it's easier to trademark it.
if you give it a proper name, you need to do a lot of research to make sure that it's not already trademarked, random letters on the other hand arent trademarked.
Trademarked companies also get priority listings on a lot of websites.
Yeah I’ve heard this before, I suppose it kind of makes sense really
Great video. Don't know much about watches but appreciate all the work and effort you put into making this video. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video as always! I watch alot of these watch repair channels but yours is nr1! Great commentary, great video quality and...great watches😄
Thank you very much and thanks for watching
I'm in awe... not for your ability to take it apart, but for putting it together again and it works - better!
It's unbelievable that they can make a profit at just $17
It still baffles me 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
It’s easy when it’s all slave labor
n fact the insides of the watch look better, than you'd expect from a $17 watch 👍
Not the best quality by far but.... $17
I find this video relaxing to watch after a hard days work.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching
congratulations on growing your channel. watching you is a pleasure. your videos are always super fresh. well done
Thank you so much!
Thats incredible for $17, how on earth could they assemble it for that price let alone make all the parts. Seems amazing they would have all the technology to make these parts etc and then just throw it together with no lube.
s[ecially for a +-~10 sec, automatic
Saves times and cost on production I would think. Thanks for watching 👍
Prison labor in the PRC
Loving the content dude! I like that they put cool features for such a low price point.
Thanks very much 👍
Really loved this video, first time viewer and new Subscriber!! I'm so glad this popped up on to my feed. I will be watching your videos regularly now! What a great series for someone like myself who would be interested in purchasing and learning with a cheaper watch for this hobby!
Thanks for watching. You are right, a cheap full working mechanical watch like this would be a great very low risk watch to learn on.
This is actually a good watch if you ever want to learn about watch servicing or just curious about the inside of a movement.
Exactly that. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
First video I saw of yours and it’s got me hooked! Well done for creating such cool content!
Awesome! Thank you!
I think this would be good for learning how to work on mechanical watches without risking too much money.
Exactly that 👍🏻👍🏻
Just started watching your videos thanks to watching wristwatch revival, starting to piece together some tooling and going after cheap vintage watches. Love the content and genuine responses to what to see instead of all this stuff is crap look on things. Cheers!
Many thanks for watching, glad it could help. I recently did drop a video on watch tools and what I am using etc. Maybe also useful for you 👍
Great editing and voice over. Love the micro/macro views. Great display of the precision needed . Thank you
Thank you very much 👍
Inspired with your video I bought the same watch, had exactly the same issues (quick date setting - non working...) Serviced it and now it's working fine. Thanks for the video.
Glad it helped and thanks for watching
Because of your Amazon video, I'm actually getting that watch and I'm going to try my hand at the hobby for the first time.
That’s great to hear. Best of luck 👍🏻👍🏻
@HorologyBiology I do not have proper tools and equipment, but I am so excited to get involved. Thanks
Such a pleasure watching you work!
Thanks for watching 👍
I bought one of these fngeen automatic watches. The quick set date adjuster does work but you need to set the time to beginning of the change to next date.
I bought the watch for use, and *expected* to have to lubricate amd tune it. Nice to see your vid. Thanks! ❤😊
That's a bizarre quickset function, however I do believe I made it function correctly once I'd finished it, seems to work ok now. Thanks for watching 👍
The amount of engineering you're getting for 17$ with this watch is mindblowing. It really is. That's the price of an armband for my casio quartz watch. Such a shame that nothing is lubed which will shorten the lifespan and ruin the accuracy.
Agreed. Thanks for watching 👍
Thanks for posting. This watch and brand reminds me a little when Timex came out with their cheap watches that were virtually disposable once they stopped working.
Thanks for watching.
The amount of effort you put in your videos is astounding. Keep up the great work! Learned so much from you since I’ve started watching your videos!
Thanks a lot and thanks for watching
Great video man. love the teardown and the commentary.
Glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching 👍🏻
I've bought about 9 or 10 of these Fngeen watches in various styles both automatic and quartz. The most I paid was under $25 for an automatic. For the money you can't beat one. Yes they're cheap but they've all kept perfect time and if I bang it against something and it breaks, it's not the end of the world. I can't remember the last time I wore any of my old good watches.
9 to 10 😅 Damnnn you went all out for sure. Fngeen master 💪 Thanks for watching
First time watching your videos, I've been considering taking this as a hobby but been afraid of breaking a good watch, but your idea of buying these for practice is excellent! Thanks for the insight.
You can do it! Doing it with cheap watches like this would certainly not break the bank
cheap aliexpress watch $17
watch repair toolkit $1700
Good luck for your wallet
I love watching watches being taken apart , cleaned and reassembled. It is fascinating! My grandpa was a watchmaker and my grandma was a jeweller and I loved visiting them in Sydney looking at the fantasia lamps and lava lamps and clocks! I love collecting watches and have an Omega seamaster. The one like James Bond wore but black. Thanks for your videos they are fantastic!
Your childhood must have been fun for sure been around watches and clocks 🙂 Thanks for watching 👍
Recently discovered your channel and found out that I love seeing watches disassembled and rebuilt. It is pretty fascinating.
Thanks for watching and welcome aboard
Amazing stuff, so cheap and not bad for that price! Great video! Good luck with the channel!
Thanks so much!
nice projet
- oils cost more than the watch itself ...🤣
but still a good way to learn ... & not a big risk
Exactly that :)
I've been following your channel for a while now and I'm so happy to see this video blow up and get so many more people exposed to your content.
Thank you very much. I must admit it has been a surprising week for me 😀
Thanks for another in-depth video exploring the world of watches. Always interesting and worth a 'watch'.
Thanks for watching
17 bucks, huh? Sounds ridiculously good value or just ridiculous 😄
Probably a combination of both. Depends what you are buying it for though.
@@HorologyBiology lol very true, sir.
Hi, I'm amazed how you strip the watch and can remember exactly were each part goes, you are very clever my friend
You get used to it. If in doubt take a pic ;)
Very cool video. It's amazing they're only charging $17. First time watching. Definitely will look for more as it is always fascinating to watch people work on watches. Keep up the great work
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed
I love all these videos. Horology biology is truly a wonderful educational experience. How he takes his time to go step by step to show you how its done. Unique. Thoughtful. Thank you for providing us with all of your content. To your success 🏆sir.
Thank you very much and thanks for watching and supporting 👍
A crazy price but a cheap piece to start practicing on as you wouldn’t care too much about breaking it.
Exactly. I was thinking the same.
Exactly that
It's amazing what $17 will buy you. Well done!
Thanks for watching 👍
Matt, you are doing great!...keep up doing the good work.
Many thanks 🤩 will do 👍
One of the best watch channels on CZcams. Keep up the good work!
Oh wow, thank you so much and thanks for watching 👍
The dial looks beautiful tbh
It’s very bright for sure
I mean, the production and supplies and engineering that made it possible to manufacture such a watch at 17$ is more impressive than the watch itself
As it’s mass produced and I’m sure they will make other watches as well. The supplies and production tools have probably paid for themselves now
Really like the video, really pleasant voice. Detailed explanation’s:) keep up the good work!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Big congrats on hitting huge milestone, very well deserved
Thank you very much 💪🏻
+10 and not having messed with the balance on such a cheap watch sounds incredible. i might get one of these.
the parts dont have the nicest finish, but nothing a bit of sandpaper, polish and replating can't fix
For $17 you really cannot complain at what you get 👍🏼 Thanks for watching
Use the correct size for screws and you won’t risk stripping heads.
Other than that, I really enjoyed the relaxed detailed run through of this piece.
Thanks for watching 👍
Fascinating video! I enjoyed your commentary 🔥
Much appreciated!
I've been looking for a channel that shows repair in good detail. It's almost unbelievable what you can get for a low price even though you had to fix it! Good luck with the channel and I am subscribed now.
Thanks for the sub and thanks for watching 👍
These videos are great! Thank you!
You're very welcome!
Just found your channel. I'm learning alot, thank you.
I'm seriously thinking about getting some tools and starting this hobby. Looks fun. I've been getting a few picket watches, it would be fun to play with them and see if I could get them running better
I would say go for it and start your 2024 with a new hobby 💪
@HorologyBiology
Just need to find room in our van for it. We live in our van. It would be so fun as we don't watch TV or even own a TV. I already make jewelry, so it goes hand in hand. I'm thinking about putting a nice mechanical watch as the head stone on a walking staff.
@clarklindquist8137 That would be really cool. I’ve actually thought about that for myself many times as I’m quite hooked on watching van build videos on CZcams
I’m really impressed with the quality of your work and your videos, they truly are super fresh! Also props for replying to so many messages, must be almost a full time job 😂
I appreciate that, many thanks ☺️ I do think I should hire someone for all these comments though as you are right, its become a job 😅
Loving the content. Nice to see that you even treat the cheap watches with respect ✊
Glad you like them!
For someone whose just learning to work on watches, I think for $17 it’s a good practicing watch, I mean for $17 who cares if you mess it up, at least you get to learn on it :)
exactly..
Totally! Great to practise on.Thanks for watching 👍
Congrats on 10k subscribers. Well done, sir!
Thank you so much 😀
Great content. I've learned so much through you videos. Keep it up.
Thanks for watching
Steeldive makes a fantastic Willard clone for $60 and it's nice, using a Seiko movement.
👍 Cheers for the info
Congrats on hitting 10k subscribers.
Thank you so much 😀
Excellent video. Just popped up on my feed this morning. And subscribed too! Although it's not a very good quality watch, it's quite incredible what they can for $17!! I'm actually impressed by that alone! Look forward to seeing your videos! 👍
Thanks for the sub, and thanks for watching 💪🏻💪🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great video! Love the way you dissected it.
Thanks for watching :)
I’ve never fully disassembled a watch, just some minor fixes on some rather large pocket watches, that said, I think this watch would be great practice for someone looking to get into the hobby. Would give you a feel for scale and how watch mechanics work.
It's the perfect watch to learn on as the fundamentals are the same and the price tag is very very low for all those expected mistakes that will be made
For that money, more than a good watch.
It's ok at that price. Obviously not much more. Thanks for watching :)
So glad you have made a success of your channel, your attitude is spot on! I hope you also grow as a content creator, Can't believe the quick set date worked after the service!
me too lol. Thanks for watching
Another cool video . Just cleaning and oiling helps alot. Thanks for the video Matt
Cheers Darryll, hope you're well 👍
I love mechanical watches to me no matter the value there all beautiful work's of art .👍
Thanks for watching 👍
Just discovered your content! Reminds me of a couple years ago with my quartz Seiko Flightmaster that had an issue with the stem and crown unable to push all the way in. The watchmaker I took it to quoted me $180 to replace the 7T92 movement (more than the value of the entire watch). I tried messing around with it myself and ended up completely destroyed the watch unfortunately as I took it apart without any idea on how to put it back together. Now I feel motivated to give it another shot and check my bag of parts to see if I can try it again
Thanks for watching 👍🏻 you should have another go for sure 👍🏻👍🏻
You'll get a movement off of eBay. I replaced the module in my Tissot T-race after it failed right out of warranty. Be careful with the stems for the hands though, I did manage to break one of the sub dial posts.
Loved this video. You got one new subscriber here. Can't wait to watch more of your videos.
Welcome aboard!
I find your cannel mesmerizing and fascinating!
Thanks very much 🙏
Honestly, at $17, that's still a ton of value for your money.
Cannot go wrong at that price. Thanks for watching :)
I was honestly surprised to see capstones and bejeweled pallet fork on a $17 watch. Totally expected to find random plastic thermoset parts instead of actual gemstones. This watch is worth more than $17. Literally the only thing I saw that was cringe was the glued-on dial.
Thanks for watching :) It is an is what it is watch, although I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of plastic.
hiya! just wanted to say that this channel pretty much sparked my interest in watches along with "wristwatch revival" on youtube. Keep doing the good work!
Great to hear! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel 👍🏻👍🏻
Great fresh video. Good luck to all when you hit 10K!!!
Many thanks Robert, and thanks for watching as always 👍
$17 USD is astonishingly cheap, even for something that doesn't work especially well out of the box. total madness.
Very cheap indeed, thanks for watching 👍🏻
When I bought my first few automatic watches I bought a fngeen and it was a decent enough watch for not much money, think it was like $16 and to be honest they serve as a great learning tool. I gave it away as I never wore it, the band was horrible on it but the watch actually ran well.
That's almost 6% increase due to inflation. Very fair pricing.
At least it got you into watches 💪🏻💪🏻 thanks for watching
Thanks for this seriously "fresh" video. Great content, thank you for all your efforts.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching
Great video, nice to see something can be done to help even the cheapest of watches!
Thanks for watching
It's just unreal how they achieve that price
It is quite bizarre
As a chinese watch addict, I got a good kick out of this video. I buy a lot of cheap watches but I would never buy a watch this crappy. A watch like this probably goes on sale for under $10. I mostly stick with cheap clomages like the SD1970. Would love to see a side-by-side comparison of an authentic seiko nh35a vs the chinese nh35a's, I've always wondered if they will last me 10yrs like theyre supposed to. Your video was very entertaining!
Most watches will run for a long time with proper care
Kudos for taking on the challenge of servicing such an affordable watch!
Thanks for watching
Great content and thoroughly entertaining. Keep up the good work.
Much appreciated!
