- Braces Explained: Flossing with Braces
In this video, I will answer the question of "how to floss properly with braces?”
While brushing your teeth is super important, you really can’t clean in between your teeth without using floss or something similar to go between the teeth and disrupt the slimey layer of bacteria that builds up throughout the day. When you floss without braces on, it is important to form a C that hugs around both teeth in a contact and sweep up to remove any bacteria biofilm that has formed.
I agree with you that it isn’t easy to floss with braces because the wire stops the floss from being able to go between the teeth but in this video I reviewed a few different techniques / tools that can be used!
2:46 - - - Floss Threader - - -
amzn.to/2RfmAao
The threader is used in conjunction with regular floss. Its job is to help the floss go between your teeth by going under the wire.
3:35 - - - Super Floss - - -
amzn.to/2QMCyti
Super floss has a threader built into it so that you can thread and floss without having to re-thread the floss into the threader. Each piece of super floss is built with the threader, regular floss, and a softer but thicker piece of floss for larger gaps. These are super effective and a bit more convenient than the floss threaders, but aren’t as re-usable as the threaders, which can be used with new pieces of floss!
4:39 - - - Soft-Picks - - -
amzn.to/2ScZuP2
Soft picks and the Proxabrushes (next link below) use bristles to go between your teeth and disrupt the biofilm. I slightly prefer soft-picks when compared to proxabrushes because they are a bit thinner and less traumatic to the gums
5:03 - - - Proxabrush - - -
amzn.to/2LusRKg
These are similar to the soft-picks but a bit larger to go into bigger spaces. I prefer to use these to brush your braces and clean the area of where the bracket joins to the tooth, as I showed in the video!
5:31 - - - Platypus Flossers - - -
amzn.to/2ShHPGa
My personal favorite! These flossers can be used to go between the teeth and still have the benefits of using string to get into all the areas between teeth. The thin side of the flosser should be aimed towards your cheek and goes underneath the wire. The backside of the flosser has a tiny brush that can be used like a Proxabrush and clean where your bracket/braces joins the tooth.

Can you do a video about how to floss while having spacers?
Me: Oh, I’m just gonna floss real quick
*8 1/2 hours later*
Me: Ok I think that’s good
Ortho: maybe floss a little bit more
Haha - We appreciate you putting in the time/effort !!
Payton Jacobellis YES THIS COMMENT IS SO RELATABLE
My goodness I couldn't agree more 🤣🤣🤣
I got the best news the last time I went to the ortho. She told me that my bands have worked so well my bite has been corrected. So... instead of having braces for 2 yrs, I'm getting them off after only 9 months!
Same here I was suppose to be in braces for 3 yrs (adult) but my teeth moved so fast and I am religious about wearing my bands that I shaved almost year off. I'm so excited.
@@stephanihenry3 wow that's amazing I'm so happy for you!
So awesome @ODDVIDS && @Stephanie H . - glad to hear your great news!!
Same! It's been 6 months of my planned 18-month treatment but I've been doing so well about keeping up with my cleaning routine and using my rubber bands, I was told that from my progress there was the possibility of finishing my treatment sooner :D
I was supposed to have mine for 18 months... it’s been less than 12 and I just got the news that im getting them off in 8 weeks because I wore my bands consistently! It’s the best feeling ever
I just got braces and was having a hard time flossing with them. I had no idea the platypus flossers existed, you're a life saver!
Ah so glad that I was able to help!! =]
I honestly love flossing now since I got braces but it does take some time
It does but its definitely worth it!!
Just a little bit (like an hour)
@@seriouslyslinky1420 yea 😂
@@seriouslyslinky1420 I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE. PLEASE HELP
I've had braces for a while now and flossing still takes a long time. Now I just listen to an audio book while flossing and it's more fun.
Very good tip!
This was right on time! I’ve been struggling with flossing with my braces.
Hope this helped explain it a bit !
I'm finishing my last semester of hygiene school, and I love recommending the Platypus flosser and Water Pik! When I had braces as a child, I really didn't floss, nor was I taught the proper techniques. It really is important to educate, and you are doing a great job!
Thank you so much! Yeah , they are fantastic!... Really, a lot of patients dont even know they exist =X
Do you recommend using the platypus after eating outside then using the waterpik at night to floss fully then using a proxybrush to brush the sides of the brackets and the arch wire?
@@eyanaashleyyes, that sounds like a pretty good routine! I'd also recommend and electric toothbrush, they are amazing for braces.
@@ashleyzielke3072 do you recommend a specific toothbrush also does a waterpik replace traditional flossing or would I combine it with the platypus placker?
@@eyanaashley I really like any of the current Sonicare toothbrushes that are on the market! Oral B is a good brand too, it really depends on the person's preference. WaterPik should be used in addition to string flossing, not to replace it.
I’m a little less than two months into traditional braces and amazed at the progress I have already seen. Your channel is super helpful with videos like these and my ortho has been praising how clean I keep my braces. Thanks for what you do 🙏 a true lifesaver.
Thanks so much! My daughter (8 yo) has been struggling with flossing in between her four brackets and under the wire. I didn't know so many products existed! We'll be watching this together in the morning. I also told her there was no CZcams when I had braces (jaw drop). Right? Ha! This would have been sooooo helpful 20 years ago.
Hope you have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year:). I have braces and all your videos have teached me how to take care of my braces better:)
Aw thank you so much!! Merry Christmas to you too =] I appreciate all of you!
I’m getting my braces on in less then 4 hours 😳
Update I got them and they aren’t so bad, my bottom teeth just feel a little irritated
That's so awesome! Congratulations on getting braces. If you face any discomfort, check out my video on managing pain - should have some useful tips for ya!
Braces Explained thank you sm
I enjoy your videos because you simplify all of the information so well. I am an assistant and enjoy what I do. We use the same flossing brands and I’m a huge fan of platypus! Some patients do ask about water picks and I was never sure if that was enough. Thanks for clarifying!
Of course! Thank you so much for the kind words! =]
I’ve had my braces for about 4 months now,I’ve seen so many changes!braces are the best, man.
That's so awesome! Congratulations bud =] Excited for you to continue along on your braces journey
Needed this! Thank you dr Greg! And happy holidays!!

Ohhh Dr.Greg... where was this last week when I still had braces?!? Just got my braces off yesterday!!!! Thank you so much for all the insightful advice with my braces! Keep the videos coming!! You’re amazing Dr.Greg!
Congrats on getting your braces off Daisy! That's so amazing =] Thank you for always being a loyal subscriber. I'm so excited for you to be brace free!
Thank you so much for these videos, this helping me out since I'm going back to school to bee an orthodontic assistant, you rock! 🎸
That's so great! I'm glad that they're helping out! Please let me know if you or any of your classmates have any questions ! Happy to help by comment and/or make a video explaining it
Oh man! Thank you thank you thank you!!! I had brackets put on my very back molars recently and I have a TINY mouth. I use a waterpik and superfloss and it’s been extremely difficult to thread the floss through way back in my mouth. The platypus flossers are going to make it so much easier for me! I just ordered them and I’m counting down the amount of times I need to floss before I get them! Lol
This was really helpful, thank you!
My ortho didn’t show me how to floss/ brush when I got my braces ...so S/O to you 🙌🏼
Aw thank you so much! Glad that you were able to learn one way or another!! =] Very proactive of you
Happy new years Dr. Greg🥳
Happy New Years, buddy! Hope you have an amazing year!
Maaaaaaan. If only I could detach my jaws and place it on my table
Very good explanation!
Thank you so much =]
Platypus flossers are life savers (and time savers!)
I love watching these videos since I have braces for the second time now as an adult. Also doesn’t help that he is incredibly handsome!
Aw hah thank you! Love having you guys on here!
Happy Holidays 😊 the floss treathers save me so much time when flossing. Especially with powerchains on. I first use a water flosser/pick but it only gets the chunks out I still floss after using it and its a must because more food particles are stuck in between my teeth.
Sounds perfect!
I've had my braces for a week, however, there are two brackets on my lower teeth, which are so close together, I can't floss there without potentially damaging one or both brackets. My teeth are also very tight together and even the thinnest floss won't fit through.
I was a daily flosser before this and never had a problem.
Do you have any ideas?
Your videos are cery informative, by the way.
Stephanie.
Water flosser
Get a WaterPik. They work soooo well
I’m having this same problem with my upper teeth 😭
My upper molars are the worse! 😩😩 Impossible to floss them
My bottom teeth are really close and hurts to floss as well
First day of bracest. They gave me a whole package of things and I thought I was supposed to use every single floss….turns out I just needed to use what’s best for me. Thanks for this video!
Hey I’m so happy I got my braces today, I love them and you are doing a great job here, and I was looking for that video l😃👍🏾
Aw thank you so much !! Hope to see you more often on this channel! Congrats on getting your braces!
They said I have to come every month for check up
I just got braces yesterday. Last night when I was trying to use the floss threaders they gave me, I was having SUCH a hard time. It was not pretty. Drooling all over myself, not being able to reach the back, not being able to fit in between teeth that are really close together... The platypus flosser in this video has given me a glimmer of hope. I'm going to buy some today! THANK YOU! :)
Ah great! I know that the threaders are tough but a lot of people like them! Yeah, check out the platypus flossers & let me know how it goes for you!!
Hey! So it’s been about a month since I first got my braces. The platypus flossers are definitely my favorite to use. I bought a few different products (some mentioned in this video) so I could try different things. I couldn’t use the platypus picks for all of my teeth at first because some teeth were too close together, but now some of those teeth have moved a bit and I can use the platypus picks on all of my teeth except for two. I’m trying to keep my braces as clean as possible and follow all the rules so I can get them off quickly (I’m 21). I have clear ceramic on top and metal on the bottom. I like the appearance of the ceramic braces but I find it nearly impossible to keep the pearl colored ligature ties from staining. They’re slightly yellow now. If you could make a video about advice for clear braces wearers, I would love that!
Thank you Dr Greg for the great videos. I just got braces last week and your videos are very helpful. By the way, you have nice eyebrows 😃
Thank you x2 haha I'm glad you enjoy them. Thank you for watching !
I dont really use the threader, it takes too much time for me lol. I jus use the regular floss like the super floss. I love the proxabrushes tho. They r heaven.
Yup!! They are great!
Thanks dr greg all your video helps alot 😁
Thank you!! So glad you enjoy them =]
Great video. I floss more than once a day- after each meal. It doesn't take long and gets a lot of stuck food out that I don't want sitting there after meals. I also swish a lot which really helps. In the shower, I use the narrow stream mode on the showerhead to power wash- until my Waterpik arrives. I'll still floss though.
I’ve no space between my teeth they’re jammed and I don’t know how to floss with that
Great information.
I have the platypus, they are good and dont take much time, i recommend getting them!
Thanks for the info!!
Very well done, Doc! I appreciate you. Fred Van de Perre, Co developer and president of PlatypusCo.
Hi Doc! Great videos as always. I was wondering if you could possibly do a video on 'short term orthodontics' or 'fast braces'. I know there's some controversy surrounding them as the relative simplicity of them means just regular dentists can perform them which a lot of orthos think undermines their specialty. Really curious to see what you think.
Id love to do a video on it - Im not concerned about it undermining our specialty but rather it delivering inadequate results which can have long term side effects. I'll probably get to that once I get through some more traditional content though to be honest =]
Hi Dr. Greg! Could you do a video on retainers? Happy New Year!
All the things I need for it are coming in the mail this week so hopefully that will be my next video! Hang tight
I just found your channel. Thank so much for these videos ❤️
Aw thank you! I'm so glad to have you here =] Let your friends know too !
Ahahaha maybe I should just get a waterflosser
Oh wait.. ughh I have to do both...
I’m getting braces in a few weeks.. I’m excited (kind of) and scared the same time lol
I'm going to do a review on an awesome brush / waterflosser so hang tight!
Any recommendations when the teeth are too tight and the floss will break easily? (No space for other types of picks.)
Buttttt a good chanel indeed
Thank you so much! I appreciate it =]
I used to use the little threader thing and it took forever to floss and when i went to the dentist they gave me these floss sticks like the platypus flossers and now it doesn’t take nearly as long😁😁
Great video better than my orthodontic video lol. Thank you!
Hey Dr Greg I was wondering if you can do a braces tighten video I getting my first tighten on Wednesday and also a video about retainers as well please so I can learn more about them thank you 😊😊😊
Sure! The retainer video will be coming up pretty soon actually - Next few weeks! Hang tight
I get my braces off January 14th after 4 years of having them 😬
OH man! THat's so exciting! Congrats!!!
That was my birthday ahah! I’m getting mine off real sooon and I’m soo excited
Sooo how is it?
Thank you so much
So glad to be able to help!! =]
Hey there! 👋🏼 Do you recommend Phillips Sonicare during orthodontist treatment? Is it safe to use sonic technology and not to cause debonding of brackets? 🤐
Best to floss before you brush at night. This way the interproximal areas between your teeth have less plaque and remaining food debris when you brush with fluoride toothpaste. The flouride can thus more effectively cover the areas of your teeth where they are in contact with adjacent teeth. :)
Thank you for video!!
Question: I just got braces today and I find I can’t get the floss to go in between the teeth that contact the molar band. Is there anything I can do to make the floss go through or should I go back to my orthodontist to adjust the molar band?
Thx this helps
Do you know of any eco-friendly flossing options while in braces? Right now I use a flosser that is reusable - I put new floss in, but the handle stays the same. Is there something like that?
do a video on extractions please !
Will do! In contact with a few oral surgeons to have on that video as a collab!
Thanks Dr yout videos are helpful. I just got my braces yesterday and flossing is a nightmare, i have troubles with ut esp with the sensitive teeth
Ah thank you so much!! I know it's a bit tough but keeping up the hygiene will make the whole process so much easier!
ngl i'm on my second round of braces (and i've had invisalign too, long story!) and i never knew about the platypus flossers. the first time i had braces was in the 90s lol so maybe this product wasn't developed yet but i'm so grateful to learn about it now! my order of them arrived today and they have turned me into a major flossing fan. thank you so much!!
question - if the teeth have a lot of stuff in between them, should one wipe the flosser off and keep using, just keep using as is, or throw away the flosser and grab a new one to finish the rest of the mouth? hope this makes sense!
how long does it take to fix a 5mm overbite? i’ve been wondering this for a while and can’t find the answer. i know it just depends on if the person wears their elastics or whatever they have, but if you wear them like your supposed to how long would it take to be fixed?
His eyebrows 😍😍😍
happy holidays to everyone
Happy Holidays LilBit Lupe!
hey i have a question i just got my bottom braces on yesterday and they put 2 brackets together like they are very close how would i floss it i got the blue thing through but i can’t really floss it
Dr. Greg Can you please explain what to expect with impacted canines and bond exposure surgery the process etc. thank you 🙏
Sure! I'll def try and make a video on impacted canine surgery soon!
Advice please??? I just got the 4 back brackets on and and can’t get my threader between the wire and my gum line. 🤢 it’s been two days since flossed my back uppers and ugh. My Orthodontist office is closed. Any advice for me? Loved your video for beginner flosses!! I agree water flosses are no substitute for between teeth. 😊 Thank you!
I finely found u because I am getting one 1/6/2020
Hey doc what do you think about products like water jet from Oral B ? Seems like it could help with the flossing issues.
Great!!!
How often do we need to change the platypus flosser?
Thank youu
For the platypus, do you need to use a new one between every tooth as not to reuse the same section of floss?
Thank you I have braces 😬 and I don't know how
for the superfloss, can i ask if i can use the stiffened end to floss my gums?
Hi, so I can use the platypus flossed instead of the thread? Will it work the same or should I use both?
Nope you can use it instead! Just make sure to sweep up on both sides of the tooth to make sure you clean the area between the teeth!
I like to tie the floss to the threader so I don't have to thread it between flossing each tooth. I use those at work, where I have a long break, and I have platypus flossers for when I'm at home, lazy, and less likely to floss. They're super convenient.
Good technique ! You should check out superfloss. It has the threader attached to the floss already
Are you supposed to rock the floss back and forth (when it's in contact with the side of the teeth which is in between) or just one direction only?
You're supposed to do a sweeping motion
i have a question,, i have braces , and my dentist told me to use peridox it 3 times a day for my gum on the bottom. i’m kinda worried it will mess up my braces, should i be worried ? and plus idk if he’s preparing me for surgery ://
Is it possible to have gum recession occur from the misuse of the proxy brush. I think i inserted the proxy brush into my front teeth and caused it to recess
Hi Dr.Greg can you demonstrate a video how to clean Hawley Retainer ? Also what do you recommended for me to clean with my Hawley retainer 🙂
Sure! I have a bunch of retainer videos I plan on doing soon!
Hello Dr, why do orthodontist remove the baby moral for braces is it compulsory?? Thanks
I'm getting braces on the 22nd, and I'm just watching this to see how to floss
I got three teeth extracted October 2018 and the got my braces quickly after. One tooth came back in a matter of days, but the other two show no signs of growing. It's now January 2019. I have my braces but I'm still missing the two teeth and I hate it so much. I don't know know if I am personally not doing something correct or why they are not growing back after so long??
Hi, what to do if I can’t insert the floss between my upper front teeth? I’m so struggling because they are so tight :( any recommendations?
After a dentist appointment the teeth get sore for the next few days right, my question is can I skip flossing for those few days since it hurts and they’re really sensitive and wait till the pain goes away so I can floss comfortably???
Water flossing might be expensive for some people but worth it. Takes less than 2 mins for floss.
Genius threader thanks!
Of course! Hope it helped =]
Soft fish’s bones can be helpful between very narrow and tight gaps
What if you don’t have gaps? Those brush floss can’t be used + hard cause it takes too long
i am having difficulty on flossing my teeth. i have my braces for five days and when i try to floss, my teeth feel sensitive and it seems like they are moving when i try to insert the floss. today is my fifth day and im not able to floss. i dont know what to do.
What are your views on the water pik because I used that
Same
he says it at 6:58
I do both
I bought some superfloss but the “thin” part is still thick for the gaps between my teeth. They get wet easily too so it’s uncomfortable to hold.
I just floss the regular way lmao.
I’m on the second day with my braces. I’ve barely ate because I can’t. It hurts to even suck out of a straw brushing Takes way longer than it actually should because of the pain ibuprofen doesn’t help. Neither does Tylenol that we’re talking about flossing with the floss won’t fit between my teeth. And yes, I put it under the wire.
I got da same super floss Oral B Floss😭❤️
How does the platypus flosser perform in cleaning posterior teeth? The handle seems to be positioned such that this may be challenging...?
Also, does the head of the thin platypus leg fit between the wire and brackets of posterior teeth?
Great videos, just sat and watched all of them.
What’s your view on waterpik vs normal flossing? I’m having my second lot of braces 20 years later so a lot of my teeth are straight but incredibly close together which makes flossing difficult even without a mouth full of metal in the way.
Waterpik is fantastic but isn't a substitute for flossing - it's a great adjunct tho!
I used the Playpus flosser for a while because I would never wanna floss. But now I have a expander and Tongue crib at the same time so I can’t use it on my top row. Flossing takes forever I need to invest in a water flosser because I do floss all the time either I forget or it just takes forever
Could you explain power scopes for braces. I’m getting them soon and I’d like to know more about them!
Sure! It works similar to a herbst (which I also have a video on ) but will do one on powerscope soon! =]
Hey! Can you please do a video about bite plates? And how long do people usually have it on?
I will make one on bite plates super soon =]
