In this video, I will be answer the question of "what are elastics / rubber bands?" and "what are they used for?" Elastics are like power chains but instead of aligning the teeth in an individual arch, they are used to coordinate your upper and lower teeth and improve your bite. Our goal as orthodontists is to not only make you have an incredible smile but have a comfortable bite, as well!
In this video, I also explain the difference between a class I, class II, and class III canine relationship and how your orthodontist may ask you to wear elastics to help correct these different bite relationships.
Two major points I stress is 1] wearing your elastics as much as possible and 2] wearing them properly. If you don't wear your elastics 24/7, except when eating and brushing your teeth, you will never get used to them (meaning that it will ache whenever you do wear them), and also you won't achieve the results you need! This often results in a much longer treatment time than necessary. It's much like pushing a ball up the hill. If you only push it part of the way and let it go, it will roll back down the hill to where you started. If you wear them as prescribed, though, you will make your treatment go super fast and have an amazing result.
I understand that it may be difficult in the beginning to place your elastics but keep at it and I promise you it will become easier! Ask your orthodontist if they have these nifty tools to help you place these elastics if you're having a hard time placing your elastics.

Hello, I need som advice my teeth are the type he talked about first my top is farther out than my bottom but they are not pulling my front back and my bottom forward it is the opposite? I’m very confused. Please help explain why they might have did what they did

Wearing elastics hurt too much. I always come back to watch this video to keep me motivated to push through and wear my elastics constantly no matter how painful they might be. I personally want to correct my bite and elastics are the only thing that will! So guys be consistent and don’t give up!

Guys, please look into orthotropics and consider stopping using them. My ortho gave me them but I'm not going to wear them because they screw up your face by moving your maxilla backwards. Just consider it, look into orthotropics- it's on youtube.

- How can elastic move the jaws? Are they really moving the jaws or simply repositioning the teeth?
- How can the teeth match correctly in their new position? I assume elastics are not so precise as the metal wire, so it is fascinating how they can work too!
- When elastics have done their work, how do you prevent teeth to go back to their original position?

Just want to say... I’ve had braces for SIX years. I never wore my bands when I first got them, then I switched doctors and my new orthodontist put me in springs (for y’all that don’t know, it’s like rubber bands but huge metal ones you can’t take out). I got them removed three days ago and he gave me elastics to wear as two triangles one each side (four bands total). It’s been 3 days and I already see more improvement and change in my bite than I did with several months of the springs. WEAR YOUR BANDS. I hate them, but my dr says if I wear them like my life depends on it, I’ll have my braces off by prom!🤞🏻wish me luck!!

Yesterday i went to my dentist for routine braces check up. In my case my bottom teeth are the ones i’m working on. I have 2 gaps between my lower tusks and the adjacent teeth, between each tusk and the adjacent tooth (to the inside) , usually my dentist uses those rubbers you are talking about, connects them from the tusk till my last grinder to the inside. Today i was looking at my braces and i noticed that there is no rubbers and i didn’t notice yesterday if he used them or not.
Do i need to go again and put them on ? Or is it ok to wait to my next visit? Does this affect the process much?

My orthdontist told me to wear it 24/7 for my overbite, but it's hard to eat, and brush my teeth. My tooth holding the elastic is the only one that hurts and hurts when I touch it, is it a sign that it might fall off!!? I just need someone to tell me I'm imaging this 😭

What a great video! I have an end to end bite with a crossbite and got clear aligners last week and boom, right in with elastics! It was nice to see you show the correction of the "underbite". I can't wait until my bite is finally corrected, as it never was back when I was in my teens. Boo!

Thank you for this!! I've officially had my braces for one year (adult braces, too poor as a kid to have them), got my last set of wires last month and today, got my elastics for my overbite. My Ortho said I'm well ahead of schedule, the braces have corrected most of my overbite and will have my braces off by 18 months if I live, eat and breath elastics for the next two months at minimum. They were very thorough going over proper wear, changing often and literally only taking them off for eating and brushing, but I wanted to see how they worked and I love this video! 🙌🏾

A week before I got my braces off I had to wear "giraffe" bands zig zagged from back to front. my teeth were pulled together so tight that I couldn't open my mouth even the slightest bit. Everyone made a game of trying to get me to laugh for the entire week. EVIL.

I remember when I first got my bands, it was by far the worst pain I had ever experienced in my mouth, I had to wear them for one month but just how they pulled on my teeth made me beyond miserable. Eventually, I got used to them and they stopped hurting, and then I was told to stop wearing them after a month!
I’ve been wearing braces for the past 2 years, getting them off soon. But my orthodontist taught me how to place the elastics on. I get the really thick ones so you can imagine how painful this is. And my dentist says the more I wear the bands, the faster I will get these braces off but I hate wearing them, now that I watched this video I kind of want to start wearing them. The bite looks really good.

getting my braces off this Thursday!!! so excited!!! elastics are difficult at first and I was so frustrated, but overtime as you get used to them it’ll get better. The first two days I got my elastics I used the tool but I suggest not depending on it because if you do it by hand you learn much quicker!

Idk why, but when i had braces (almost 20 years ago) i wore my elastics like i was supposed to, but at the next two tightenings, my ortho scolded me for NOT wearing them, he thought i was lying! So the third month i was so sick of them and apparently they weren’t doing anything for me (i never understood the purpose), i completely gave up wearing them, and i went back for my next tightening, NO JOKE he said “your teeth are looking great! I can really tell you’ve been wearing your elastics!” And i was dumbfounded lol apparently my jaw would not be forced to be fixed, it wanted to fix itself somehow 🤣

I'm in the same exact boat. I'm getting real tired of wearing these things and nothing changes. It's been over a year and my overbite STILL hasn't changed even though I wear these fucking things 24/7.
My ortho used to get onto for not wearing them, and I got so frustrated cuz he obviously didn't believe that I was really wearing them. Well about six months ago, my ortho switched suppliers for their elastics, and they're much thicker and snap less than the old ones. Well I've actually started to notice a difference since I switched.
I’ve been leaving my elastics on and off for 6 months now😫and I complain when there’s obviously no improvement in the overbite.

I’m traumatized by elastics. I had an overjet and my orthodontist assigned me to wear elastics to fix it. I was supposed to see weeks later but Covid happened and i didn’t see her for another 3 months. I wore elastics from bottom back to top front for nearly 6 months and every morning i woke up with an underbite
By the time she saw me again i was hysterical. Crying in the chair from pain and trying to explain to her that i couldn’t bite and make all my teeth meet. She told me to just not wear anything for the next 7 weeks. But the damage was done. Even though my jaw relaxed forward some more, it still wasnt enough to accommodate all my lower teeth. My incisors are constantly interrupting each other while assuming regular everyday lower jaw function
Idk man. It’s so bad, she hinted that maybe i needed jaw surgery. I didnt need jaw surgery before. My bite was just fine. Now her office basically told me to find another doctor who can help me, which I went and did. I feel robbed of my smile and jaw function. And I couldn’t even get a refund...
I hope you end up fixing your jaw, that must suck that you went through all that to be dissapointed and not refunded. I hope it turns out better for you. Dont be discouraged :)

GodlyJohn she made me wear tortoise elastics. Then when i came back in to see her in June she said invisalign can’t move your teeth forward or backward. I reminded her that she assigned me to wear elastics for an overbite and she said i should see a TMJ specialist. I think she forgot she gave me elastics, realized she forgot, then tried to gaslight me.

So I had braces for like 9 month and I thought I got away without elastics but guess what? Today my orthodontist told me we need elastics as well. So here I am watching a perfect explanation. Thanks

I’ve been wearing elastics to fix my overbite. After a month or so of wearing it, my dr tells me stop wearing it because my overbite is gone. A month later I come back in and he tells me to wear them again. The same thing kept happening and now he tells me that I’ll always have an overbite. I’m not satisfied with the results and feel that he hasn’t tried his best to fix my bite. I was looking into the spring appliances and wondered why he hasn’t tried it on me??

Same. I have an overbite on the left side and I am wearing braces from 4 years and elastics since 6 months and I see no difference 😭😭

Hello Dr. Greg. Greetings to you from India! I was going through many videos, describing the orthodontic treatment and I got to know about your channel. You make really great videos, which are very informative. I began my orthodontic treatment two months ago. I have many problems, my upper canine on the left side is impacted, the upper right canine is way behind than it should (reason being my baby tooth didn't fall at the time it should have, so the new tooth didn't get its fair place), my upper central incisors are crossed, to name a few...I have an appointment day after tomorrow. My doctor said that, on that day, she will do something to create space for the upper right canine in order to be able to pull it to its correct place. After two months, the mandible has formed a nice arch, the central incisors are aligned, but they are crossed & one incisor is little lower which needs to be pulled up and my doctor said she is going to fix all the issues. So I do see a nice progress in my mouth in mere two months. And I look forward to what great content you are going to show us soon. By the way apologies for the lonngggg message, hope you you wouldn't mind my excitement.

I had my lower braces put on today along with the bands for class 3 , this video explain it all and made it more clear , I was told by m y doctor to wear them at night before bed

Dr. Greg Asatrian i was given elastics aswell..how long till i have to replace the rubber band..?

Enlightend 1 Cab it must be replaced at least once a day and at most after every meal if it gets in the way of your chewing and you need to remove them while you eat... didnt your orthodontist explain to you all of this? You cant wear the same one for multiple days at a time.

just started using rubber bands, in the past week, i could seriously feel like it like crazy the first day like it had me blurry eyed on the side of my mouth the rubber band is on. it’s gotten better but my orthodontist has said it’s doing it’s job.

Thank you for this! I just thought by not wearing them this round it would just delay the overall progress and not wearing them wouldn't really affect anything. I did it so faithfully the first three months of needing them. They didn't hurt at all and it felt like they were not doing anything really. The 2nd three months I was traveling with the illness and then death of my brother so totally forgot the second three months and when I remembered, they were in a different state so I didn't worry about it - since it didn't feel like they really did anything anyway. This check-up, he told me to hit the rubber bands hard again and I was a little confused but now I totally get it, thank you! Apparently, my two back teeth are hitting and causing headaches and that is why he changed where the rubber bands were supposed to go this last three months SOOOO I put myself through three months of unnecessary headaches instead of just wearing the rubber bands and moving the teeth into position. Thank you from one tired, middle-aged mama who isn't too old to learn something new :)

Ha thank you! Good seeing you back on the videos! Not necessarily but it is very important to have hooks on your teeth if you eventually need rubber bands, so its there "in case" but usually we do use rubber bands to help finish up your treatment and get your bite right! Dr. Greg Asatrian thank you sooo much your soo much help and have been aswering soo many of my questions. I will be sure to let u know about my experience in that like 😉😀also this really bad thing happened like 2 years ago when I waked my mouth on the bench and I cracked it half horizontally and it was my front adult tooth!!!then there was blood and Broken tooth all over my kitchen floor. So we went to the dentist and got it capped but the cap was uneven ( it was shorter than my other front tooth) so when I got braces the orthodontist assumed it was just shorter, so now it is like longer than the other one. And also it still hurts when he applies pressure to it..... Sorry that was a long stories....
Dr. Greg Asatrian I don’t have hooks on my braces but I know I’ll need to wear elastics so do you know what they would do to use elastics
Never mind at my last appointment he put them on my upper knine and I asked if I was adventually gonna get elastics and he said that towards the end of my treatment I would get the in a triangle shape
