Tip for anyone who's come back from an orthodontist appointment with new wires. Eat/drink something cold. If the pain is THAT unbearable, hold some ice water in your mouth for temporary pain relief. Works like a charm.

Just got my first braces on 2 hours ago. It feels very strange and I feel like someone is pressing my all teeth together , but pain is manageable as of now.. I feel my saliva out while sleeping hehe I wokeup a few times to wipe it out.. but its gone in first 7 hours.. wish me good luck for the first 7 days as my orthodontist told me it takes 7 days to get used to it. I always tell myself NO PAIN NO GAIN. Btw I blended my food and eating my dinner.. struggling to eat aswell.. 😫 but alhamdulilah am finally happy that I have put on my braces and I have started my journey to get to my beautiful smile destination ☺ inshallah

Thank you all. Its 4th day and my pain has gone 70% already. I just feel tender or swollen lips.. I am eating smashed potatoes, Youghurt, oatmeal, mince meat, soft paste of rice (cooked & blended 😄) peas paste( good for protein) & scrubbed eggs and sometimes milk.. 13th Day pain has gone 95%, I can chew meat, eat rice and bread ..almost no pain at all and I don't even feel I am wearing braces.

Yeah, I got my braces 2 day’s ago and my teeth literally feel like they’re going to fall out any minute now. I think I’ll be on a liquid diet for a week at least! It hurts sooo bad.
Just get some ice for the bottom and take lot of Tylenol. The only thing I could eat when I got them a year ago was max n cheese and yogurt. I recommend just taking it easy and sleep.

@@j.d.9806 I've been taking tylenol but it barely helps the pain. It brings it down from unbearable to slightly tolerable, which is good but not much relief.
I'm on end of Day 3. I maxed out Tylenol and still in so much discomfort and pain. I'm basically sipping hot water without tea to just to get some relief.
Cold foods and drinks help a lot
I’d get some icecream it really helps especially after you get them tightened
I’ve resorted to literally putting paper towel strips in my mouth to protect my cheeks and gums.
Yeah cold water really helps , but don't bite ice because it's bad for your braces and teeth

i’ve had my wisdom teeth removed and my top braces put on and that doesn’t compare ANYTHING to the pain i’m feeling right now. i got my bottom brackets on today, and i’ve been sobbing for 4 hours straight because the pain is so bad. i’ve taken the max amount of extra strength tylenol, and have had ice on and in my mouth al day. the pain is so bad i can’t even describe it anymore. i’m sobbing while writing this comment because my mouth is so sore. any help advice would be greatly appreciated
update: hey i’m not dead still hate my bottom braces though!!
Just remember the pain will go away soon. Try adding some ibuprofen as an additional form of pain relief as it will help with the inflammation. Avoid letting your teeth touch together as that can cause pain, and stick with a liquid diet until it starts to improve.

Idk if this is just me but, every time I got back to get a larger wire it hurts so much more than the last time I went.

So I got my bottom row today and my top row like twelve weeks ago with a wire changing in the middle. They also put two seperators on the top row at each corner. I went to school and had small pieces of a burger,milk,yogurt, and pudding. Suddenly after lunch in class I felt a missing separator and realized that I had probably swallowed one. I now have to get it again tmrw so will the pain be worse and take longer to lessen?
If you’ve already had it in once, I don’t think it will be any worse. Perhaps even less as you know what to expect. Remember to stick to a soft diet 😀

It can feel quite painful but it tends to settle down over the next few days. Take some pain killers!

just got my braces today, i was feeling okay at first but after a couple of hours the pain hits. i had a hard time chewing food so i stick to eating porridge or soup. hope the pain goes away soon

I just got my second set today, and all was fine. I had to get the little blue paste things in my molars to fix my bite which basically disables me from fully closing my mouth and forces me to chew with the power of two teeth. The sores and pain has kicked in now and I can’t sleep. I’ve tried so much distractions and techniques. I tried salt water rinse, ice water, ice gums massage, everything I could find. I’ve resorted to stuffing paper towels into my mouth to separate my brackets from the gums and cheeks. Any help would be appreciated
i also got the blue paste that keeps me from closing my mouth all the way! or biting fully. which sucks. at first it was fine and i was actually really happy, now my mouth is sore and i don’t even want to talk. i don’t want to eat cause it’s so difficult. really hoping to find a way to get through this
I have the blue stuff too! If u like tacos or stuff like that, try eating taco soup. I don't like soup but I love taco soup.

to be fair, this may sound crazy. But if you mix distilled vinegar with water (around a 1: 5 - 10) ratio, it literally helps with the pain so much
edit: I searched it up for any other information but I recommend not doing this very often since vinegar isn't really good for your teeth hence the acidity

I got my upper arch braces in Feb and the lower ones just 2 weeks back... Ughhhhh the pain... And no eating of fav hard food stuffs.. I even swallowed 5 out of 8 separators during the initial treatment days😂
just got a new wire in and at first it wasn’t bad, i was actually thinking “they should’ve gone to a tighter one” but i am now thankful they did their job bc this pain is enough😭
i’m currently drinking cold water, actually letting it sit in my mouth and it works!! well at least for a little! not the greatest results but there are times where i do not feel pain!
i also bit into a chocolate chip cookie dough chunk (safe to eat not the kind that gives salmonella) and the chocolate chip hurt my teeth sm even though it was tiny asl
edit: not to mention I also have like 3 cuts in my mouth. but i essential brought this upon myself, I was the one begging for braces but it’s most definitely gonna be worth it in the end!!

I just got my braces yesterday and already broke a bracket on the incisors on the bottom I'm using the wax to hold it and this is good to let me know when the bracket pain will stop

Got my braces today, however my upper molars feel like they still have the glue and it is hardened, how can i remove it. It's quite uncomofrtable as I feel them when the upper and lower teeth meet. Heeelp!
Final adjustment of my braces and I feel like it hurts more then it ever has
9 hours since I first got them, pain was starting to kick in so I swallowed 1000mg of Tylenol and 800 mg of ibuprofen. And it’s manageable. I’ll keep updating this and also put my regime and hope it helps someone.
Also I’m an RN so idk if that gives me credibility lol.

my brackets are sharp and they are making scratches on my inner cheek, resulting in a mild cuts on one side
If you can, try and press the sharp bit inwards with your finger so it doesn’t point out so much. Or you can buy wax blobs from Amazon search “orthodontic wax” and stick that in the area until you see your orthodontist
@@5MinuteSchool Thanks, I pressed the wire inwards as it was malleable, but the thing where wire is connected at the end of molars is hurting, as you said I will try sticking wax there

Got self ligated braces today only. Pain is not there still after 8 hours. Bt I got 2 springs for the lateral incisors and bite blocker. Due to the springs, my upper lip is in so much discomfort and going outwards. The bite blocker is disabling to bite. How to comfort this constant irritation ??
@@abby_bellamy oh man the bite blockers !! I got rid of them in May. Oh lord such a relief. I hate them but only those helped to fix my posterior underbite. So can't really complain.
Even though I got my braces 1 to 2 days ago, yes I don’t know when I got them cause it’s 1:30 in the morning rn. The pain is so bad like bad bad, even though I didn’t get them that long ago I just have a hard time thinking that it’s ever gonna get better. Also, there’s the SMALLEST wire sticking out like it’s so small and it’s hurting my cheek so bad. I left my wax in the car yay, this is going great!
Hopefully it’s feeling better now. Pain killers and a soft or liquid diet can help. If a wire is sticking out, if it’s long enough, you could carefully press and bend on it with your finger so it points inwards and is away from your cheek. If not, as you said, a wax blob can be used until your next appointment with your orthodontist. Hope that helps, and hopefully your pain has improved.

I got my braces this morning but I didn’t get brackets on 4 teeth (had to have them pulled) nor a wire on the bottom because of how crowed my teeth were. The 4 teeth that don’t have brackets hurt sooooo bad because they are getting pushed around and moved. I’ve tried Tylenol and advil but nothing is working, does anyone have any advice?

I just got my braces on today. Take 600 mg of ibuprofen every 6-8 hours ( depending on age) . I know it sound like a lot but you need to stay ahead of the pain

It takes about a week to get used to it. Don’t be embarrassed your teeth will look amazing when it’s all finished 😀
The wire on the brackets are scraping my cheek and later it started to stab the inner parts of my cheek constantly whenever I closed my mouth it would stab me again and it bled I finally got a hold of the wax so it stopped but the pain was so bad like excruciating and whenever my teeth touch it stings badly like the pressure also my teeth are now sensitive to cold like even the air made it burn

you CAN play just as well with braces as without. you may need to take a few days off practice, however many you need for the pain to go away, and your embrechoure will be weird and different at first, but you get used to it, and soon youre playing like its not even there! i got top braces yesterday morning and my wire changed for the bottom ones. wish me luck as i have a gig tonight (this is not recommended but things happen yknow)- if this happens to you guys- use your wax, have ice water with you, and definitely bring painkillers. also if ur in too much pain please please dont force it and just try to power through that could be really hamful. i assure you people will understand

Soft diet and pain killers where you can. It does take a bit of time for it to settle down and you'll find it gets better day by day. If it's not manageable then make an appointment with your orthodontist

Hi there I’ve been wearing braces for 4 months now. I only had 3 teeth touching evenly and they are correcting my jaw as well I was in a car accident. Is it normal to still have severe pain? As I was in a bad way. Thank you so much 😢

Got mine today has been 4ish hours my teeth feel itchy and it’s so painful
i just got mine a few minutes ago and it doesn't really hurt its just incredibly uncomfy
I had to have 4 teeth pulled to make space and the most painful so far is the wires over the empty spaces rubbing on my cheeks. I've only had them for 2 days so I still am very bad at placing the wax and it keeps coming off
How is it now???? I took out 2 teeth from upper jaw and have braces in upper one. It's really painful i can't eat anything 😭 . Will it stay same after a month too???
@@jinniepatil73 The holes with the wires going across make it very annoying to eat and food often gets stuck in there but I can eat almost anything now. Biting on bread has been the hardest for me (a soft bun gets stuck everywhere and hard bread puts pressure on the braces and it is uncomfortable and eating a lot can make it a bit painful) I haven't tried biting onto stuff like fruit or hard foods cause I'm scared but every other food I can eat it just takes me longer. The wires still rub on the cheeks; sometimes they get caught when I sleep and while I'm eating, but for the most part, the inside of my mouth got used to it, and the skin is rougher than on the rest of my mouth. In the first week, I honestly thought I would be living on soup and mash potatoes for 2 years but it's much better now
omg the wax problem for me too, i reccomend getting a pea sized chunk

I have under bit and got them yesterday they hurt so bad and I have to wear elastics whenever I’m not eating and school now sucks more with these
Hey, its been a year since this upload but i see you're still replying to a few comments so maybe you can help me out too. Got my braces fitted today and during my first meal noticed that when i bite, my canines hit the brackets on the bottom teeth before i even get to bite halfway. Is this normal or should i go back to my orthodontist to see if anything's wrong? Just worried as it feels like if i were to bite down fully and with normal force, the brackets would pop off. Thanks.
It's hard to say as it entirely depends on your teeth position. There likely will be some contact with the bottom brace but as your teeth shift around, the pressure may reduce. If it's too uncomfortable, then perhaps have an appointment with your orthodontist to have it looked at, but ideally stick with soft food until you can see them and it may improve.
OK that was a little wrong. The pain starts to descending around 24 hours but something about 3 to 7 days, so which one is it one day or 3 to 7 days
It really varies person to person. When I had braces the pain was around 12 hours and then it got less and less. It hurt when my teeth made contact with each other. After a few days the pain went away completely
My teeth are so tight I can not pull floss between them .
I just got them yesterday. The first day was ok but today I can't eat properly and have recurring pain
What is naproxen ibuprofen and Tylenol? Does it do anything for you for pain?
They are pain killers. Tylenol is likely what you need
