How to Replace Toyota Corolla VVTI Cam Gear T-SB-0087-09

- In this video I show how I change a VVT-I cam gear in a 2009 Toyota Corolla. Reason for this repair is a rattle noise at startup from the timing chain. This is a problem that most Toyota Corolla and other similar models with the 2zrfe engine may encounter. I initially installed two cheap Cam Gears that I purchased off of ebay. They were JUNK and did not solve the issue. I took the original gear apart and pinched the springs tighter and re-assembled. This did correct the issue.

Finally a real Technician ! . . . I am a retired old school RR tech so not familiar with these new systems - My daughter's 2009 Corolla recently developed a severe power loss condition - starts easily but no real power any more. She was told that her best option was - get an exchange engine ! My problem with that solution is - - it's a total COP OUT ! . . . real techs don't do that sort of thing - we fix the problem . . . Thank you for showing me that this problem is fixable - - - TIME TO GET THE TOOLS OUT AND PUT THEM TO WORK !
This is the best video I've seen on CZcams for a home mechanic to follow and be able to do a fairly complex repair. This video will save lots of people lots of money if they have the ability. This deserves thousands of up votes and the few down votes mystify me. Excellent work. Thanks again!
Hi tom
I want to know how i unlock the vvti cam gear
I replaced before one time but rattle noice came back after sometime
I’m having the same noise/rattle issue during cold startup,
So if I were to purchase a new cam gear does it come unlock? If its locked how do I unlock it?thanks
Great video by the way!!
@@eacalways it comes unlocked
Great video but I still hear the rattling noise after you turned your car on
Thank you for your comment and I’m so glad that this video helped. Stay safe and best of luck with all your training and tech skills.
I successfully replaced my VVTI gear last weekend on 09 Matrix using your video as reference. Runs like a champ, startup rattle gone. Thank you for sharing your expertise.

How much did you spend?
Did the rattle sound like the starter was stuck on for a couple seconds after you start? Trying to figure out of this is the solution for my 09 corrola
5@@STOCKmarket-fo1fh Probably only about $375.
I had a rattle on start up, I watched and performed this video step by step and now my car does not rattle anymore! Thank you very much! 😊
How is it now?
@@SeeYouInHellDad Still perfect day and night! Does not rattle at all!
GR8T video. I loved that you did no narration and let us see what the disassemble and assembly look like
this worked amazing got the job done in 4 hours on my Pontiac Vibe and it saved me over 2000 dollars thank you sir
best troubleshooting I've seen, with a little knowledge of gear markings, other friends can do it, great idea. thanks.
Thank you Sanders Auto Solutions finally a video on the whole process 👍👍
Hello Mr. This video rocks , hands down the best timing chain video ive been going to school for this and feel like you have strengthen my abilities for my future. Thank you thank you ......
Thanks for the video, just what I needed, I just wanted to check the timestamps, because my car accelerated by itself and the revolutions started to jump up and down and it did not stay stable when I checked the time. The cam gear of the exaust was delayed by one point.I did everything as you did and arranged the gear of the camshaft and thank God and you I was able to solve it.The revolutions went down very well and it no longer ocilate as was doing, now stays stable in 680 rpm with out a/c and with a/c comes up a little up to 800 to 900 rpms thank you very much.
Hi Jose, I am so happy I could help, Thanks for watching my video. I really appreciate your message.
Thanks, Tom
Great video, no nonsense straight to the point.
Watched this and did one two days ago. Thanks for posting this video
Thank you so much for the video and your helpful, well informed comments. You're a damn saint
I recently purchased a used 2010 Matrix and I seem to have this problem with a couple seconds of a grinding noise after a cold start when the car has been sitting for awhile. I have read some people claim its a 3000-4000 dollar repair at a dealership and they have to completely remove the engine from the car and all that. Based on your video it seems to be a much simpler and hopefully much more affordable job to take care of. Thanks for posting.
Again , Thanks for sharing this Video. you made it look so simple. I have a 2010 Toyota Corolla doing the same thing. now to order parts and GET HER DONE.
Hey Ricky, Get Her Done! If you need any help along the way with any technical info just email me at sandersautosolutions@gmail.com. I’ll be happy to share all the info I have with you or anyone who needs help with this repair. Thanks Tom.
THANKS AGAIN! I just got around to doing my sons corolla. I watched your video 10 times to make sure I was comfortable. I just replace the gear with the most updated one. God I hope they reengineered it! It’s was a little scary seeing those cams pop up when you take the last caps off. It did make the grinding noise the very first time I started it but I’ll wait and see if it does it after it sits. If the noise comes back..... it’s going to the grave with the noise!
10/21/19 update, no grinding noise so far so good.
What part number did you use?
What's the link to get the updated can phaser?
Worked like a charm, to unlock it I used a simple tire/ball air pump that connects to the cigarette lighter port. Wrap the electrical tape around, poke a hole and zip tie the edges
Super helpful my friend! Although I'll be working on a 2ZZGE the configuration is very similar so, I believe these techniques will work on cam replacement. Once again, thanks for sharing this tutorial with us all!
Is your engine sound like knocking and shut off by itself att idle???
Muy bien profesional, es el mejor video alguna vez puesto relacionado con automóviles Toyota. Felicitaciones !
I just completed this repair on my 2010 corolla with 150k miles. It took me about 4 hours and the video helped so much! The broken cam gear in my car was Toyota part number 130500T010 and I replaced it with part number 130500T050 at a cost of $215 from Toyota. I also replaced the valve cover gasket from advance auto. My start up rattle has been 100% gone and it was worth the time and money.
Thank you so much for sharing about your repair, especially about the updated part number for others. Congrats on your confirmed fix and thank you for watching my video.
Tom
How did you know it was the intake gear that was causing the rattle? Did you not replace the exhaust cam gear as well?
@@cowtownraiderthe tsb only calls for replacing the intake side. I have not heard of anyone needing to replace both. I went 30k miles since this repair and it remains fixed.
@@David-eq5ok Thanks, I was hoping for that answer because I only purchased the intake cam gear. It's supposed to arrive tomorrow. The aftermarket one I got on Rockauto refused to seat on the camshaft.
@@David-eq5ok Awesome, I managed to get through the procedure and the car is running great. Even feels smoother and more peppy.
Awesome video! I have a 2012 Corolla with the same issue, I'm terrified to try to fix it myself but this video made me more aware of how to fix the issue. I'm hoping to get it to a shop soon to get it fixed just not looking forward to paying an arm and leg to get it done.
How much were you quoted?
Awesome I am about to attempt this as soon as the weather warms up!
Hey Matthew, if you have any questions when you do yours just message me. I’ll try to help if I can.
Thank you for posting this video. I did my intake cam gear in my 2010 corolla a few days ago and the start up noise is gone. Your video really helped!
SO HAPPY TO HEAR YOU WERE ABLE TO COMPLETE THE REPAIR WITH THE HELP OF MY VIDEO.
Hi, Does the new gear different locking mechanism different than original gear ? updated version ? thanks
I used this video along with another to change my intake vvti gear. Thank you for the video. I bought the gear aftermarket from standard automotive. Vvt530 it was significantly less than oem, but on my 09 corolla s Canada made.
The light shallow marks on the new gear had to be used to line up for timing.
Just something to consider if someone buys an aftermarket gear.
I wouldn't trust any after market for such a critical component. But it's just me, hope you don't encounter any issues
If your video views seemed to skyrocket over the past week or two that would be me. I watched this thing so many times to make sure I understood exactly what I was getting ready to do. It worked great. There was some work performed out of frame but it wasn't difficult to figure out. A couple things I noted along the way, releasing the tensioner is performed by rotating the crankshaft counterclock about 90deg until you hear it disengage the hook. I'm not sure what you did with the screwdriver except maybe disengage the hook manually. Also the torque value for the 13 cover screws is 7ft lbs.
You saved me a ton of money and she purrs like a kitty. Hats off, I regret that I only have one upvote to give.
I've been terrified of the rattling in my Corolla. I've never heard of anyone losing their car because of it though, which makes me feel better. I'm thinking of leaving it alone, until it gets more annoying. It only rattles once in a while, and it's been going on for one year. I'm glad the video exists. Now I can save a couple thousand when I fix it.
@@acatwithinternet5635 my rattling got worse from only in the mornings to rattling all day now I'm doing it this weekend
REY Morales I did it on my son's car two years ago, only his tensioner had failed and I had to do the whole timing job, take your time, stay organized is my best advice
Many thanks for this video. I will use it to repair 2009 Venza 4cyl. You could have added the importance of replacing the "finger filter" screen and also checking/replacing the two oil control solenoid valves.
Life saver!!!! Thank you for showing me the way!
Awesome much appreciated video ... will definitely share with everyone ty
Hi bmw575, thanks for the comment, and I really appreciate you sharing it for me! 👍

Older video. Decent starting point but there’s some info missing id have questions on. But none the less, it’s a good tutorial to help others.
This is an excellent video! Thank you. I have a 09 Rav4 with a 2.5L, 2AR-FE and was wondering if this technique would work on it instead of pulling the timing chain cover. This would definitely save a bunch of time and hassle. Thank you again for your efforts and expertise!
just bought a 2018 Rav W a 2.5, lock pin is sticking, and I hope that the cam can be removed as in this video.......anyone done a late model 2.5?
You did a fantastic job of filming this.
You're qualified mechanic get a great job and I don't think you could have an unsatisfied customer.
It's fantastic you are a qualified mechanic. you are at least a master of the 2.5 Toyota motors.
Nice job good video to sit back on the beach or running down the river to have you inside the boat tipping a couple beers there's no way I would not enjoy that..
Oscar, to unlock the timing gear you need to use air pressure and electric tape trick. There are several videos here on CZcams that I found for references on how to do it for other installations I’ve done. At 23:03 you see me pull a screen filter out of the main cam cap. This system runs on oil pressure so you want to confirm it’s not clogged up. Good catch, your the first to ask me about that. Thanks again and just message me if you have any other questions.
Thanks and nice to meet u Tom.

I have a question. Can the rattle kill the car? I've never heard of that killing a car. My Corolla rattles sometimes, and if it's harmless, I'd rather not touch it unless I have to.
@@acatwithinternet5635 I'd like to hear what other's have to say. I have seen some posts where people have run their Toyota's for over 100,000 miles with the rattle with no other issues.

Thanks for doing this - I appreciate it.
muchas gracias por tu video me fue de gran ayuda, para resolver el problema del sprocket vvti
Great ideas to store the bolts in holes they were removed from, and stuff rags to keep things from falling 'down under'.
I'm sure you should apply lubricant to the bearing surfaces prior to re-installing the carriers. Especially after wiping them dry as shown here.
can you just use engine oil ?
No@@saefhindi6184
You're amazing brotha' 😎 👍
I literally got the urge to start working on my car yesterday. All I did was change the windshield wipers and now im looking on how to stop the VVTI rattle when I do a cold start
awesome video
Thanks for the video.
Awesome video. Would this work for an ‘08 sienna, or do you think that because it’s a V6 instead of a 4 cylinder that it would be too inaccessible?
Great video! Thank you for sharing.
😂😢
Great work
Do you have a video of what you did to the originals to make them work better? Also, is it just the intake that needs replacing or fixing?
Thank you so much my friend
I'm sure this would be the same method for a 2011 Corolla, would you think so? I need to do mine as well. You should've showed the part unlocking the cam and bolting it up I know there is a method on that part oh and the putting air into the cam gear and unlocking it. The tensioner part too. Great video. I downloaded it to help this spring. It's too cold in Northern Arizona right now.
good job man
Saludos amigo exelente video una pregunta cuando arrancaste el auto se escucho ese ruido otra ves se le quitó el ruido con el cambio de engrane o siguió igual escuché k al encenderlo de oyó ese ruido espero tu respuesta saludos
What were the camshaft caps torque to how many inch pounds. I have a 2011 Corolla they might be different torque specs I don't know I'm not really worried about the variable valve timing gear specs.
Thnx. Great video
Thank God while my Rav was in shop getting diagnosed, I found a 10year 100,000 mile power train warranty it had. My cost is a $50 deductable. Car only had 57,000 miles and 6 months left on warranty.
There should be any resistance when aligning the cam arrow marking with the sprocket mark?
P0016 code? I have checked solenoids and relaced vvt, cam and crank sensors, timing is spot on and still throws a code after driving...Do you have to unlock the phaser or does it matter? I am actually working on toyota 2.4 vvt with only on phaser on intake cam.
Can I do this on a 1NZ-FE? Will there be enough room to get the cam out with the tighter space?
Excellent video, thank you
how do you mean tightened the springs? the spring for the locking pin? did you stretch it, replace it with stiffer spring?
Hi! Great video. What part of the camshaft are you tapping with a yellow and black screwdriver at 22:22 and what was the purpose of this tapping? Thx!
Hi, If I going to change just the chain tensioner gasket and to do so put the cylinder 1 in Top Dead Center compression. (It is when the crank pulley mark aling with 0°, right)
Can I remove the tensioner without worrying the chain jump time in the crankshaft gear? I see there is a lip below that gear in the timing chain cover that help minimizing the risk, right? My motor is a 2ZR-E25W serial number. from 2011 corolla. I know to release the tensioner I have to rotate CCW like 10°.
Does I have to do something else to avoid jumping time?
Sanders an absolute BRILLIANT VIDEO Thanks a ton About 10 years ago i rebuilt a Camery Auto engine hat was hard work Im 77 yrs now and have a 2016 Toyota Auto with this chain rattling problem Thanks for the info will try to do the repair as soon as i can afford the parts ONE Question i notice the back top cam there appears to be a screw jutting out Should that be Only asking Best wishes Peter
Very helpful video thanks. Can I ask how you knew witch cam gear was the problem?
Question which tension torque you applied and how you can we do it it with empact wrench.?
Thanks tom
Do these cam gears cause a check engine light for vvt faults? Friend has one and he asked if I would replace gears, he already replaced tensioner and few other parts. I have 30 experience as a mechanic but haven't had the chance to work on theses vvt systems. Thanks for the video, great information.
If I just want to replace the old cam gear with a new one, can I install the new one at the proper timing by copying over the marks from the old gear?
Make sure your Bendix in your starter isn't hanging up before you people start pulling the cam gear. Sounds similar on cold starts.
Was this intermittent on cold starts or did it make the ride of all the time?
Same problem, i have a cali emissions engines but cant seem to find the exact part. Can i use federal emissions part or does it even matter at all
Are the cam bolts torque to yield bolts that need to be replaced?
when installing the cam does the gear have to be locked or unlocked? great video.
Not sure if I missed this but when did you put the timing chain tensioner back in sorry I just watched it again for the second time I saw the tensioner being reinstalled by far the best video on CZcams
Hi Earle! I didn’t video the install of the tensioner because I had the camera attached to the hood and there are lots of videos on how to remove and install the tensioner. If you go to 43:23 of the video you will find the prompt to install it and how I unlocked mine to put tension on the chain. I appreciate you watching the video and hope it gives you insight on how to replace the gear.
now It wouldnt hurt to put a few drops of blue locktite on that cam gear bolt= great video
Do you remove the chain tensioner before removing the upper guide?
Reading over your video description on what you did for the original gear perhaps thats what toyota should of done for customers. There are so many posts online though about how the dealers replaced these cam gears free of charge only for the noise to come back.
Can anyone please tell me.... is it ok to leave the cam gear unlocked in the car or do you need to find a way to lock it back once the timing chain is back on and its installed... if so... how do I lock it back? Thanks all!!
hello, would this process be the same for a 04 camry with the 2az fe 2.4 motor?? 150k miles and has just a very slight cold start rattle at the moment. quickly goes away but I'm sure it will get worse as time goes on. great video...
At 19:00 sprocket phaser assy is removed from camshaft and a 2nd phaser assy is installed onto camshaft. At 22:00 camshaft assy is reinstalled.
Thank you for the video, I would be interested to see what goes wrong and how you ajusted the gear. How long has it lasted so far? I will probably just buy the new Toyota part anyways, just to be sure. It would be neat to compair them.
Hi Rfnoise, thank you for watching. I am going to get the video done on how I fixed this cam gear after the 1st. The car I repaired was for our used car lot. The car has been sold to a new customer. The customer that bought it lives close by and was aware of the issue before purchasing it. He has not had any issues to date and drives it everyday everywhere. If it does come back in for the same issue I will be sure to share and document it for everybody. If you need any help with yours I will be happy to assist if I can.
Do you ever pull the timing cover and replace the chain? All data is saying 9 hours for cover removal does that seem right?
Hey man at 23:08 you pulled something out of that cam front bracket and inserted it again.. what was that??
Thanks man..
Great Video Thanks for posting the video. Do you lock the VVTi Gear at some point after torquing it down to 40 ft-lbs? Or Wondering if I should leave it.
Hi, thanks for watching my video. You want to lock the VVTI Cam Gear after torquing it down before installing back into the engine.
I'd like to know more about tightening the springs on the cam gear
After you torqued the cam bolt, I assume you locked the timing sprocket without saying anything about it. Why didn't you change the exhaust? Not rattling?
Question Chris fix can I do that to a Toyota Corolla 1.5 engine vvti cam. The same way u did it to this vehicle.
Does the cam gear needs to unlock and torque before installation?
Thanks for the video, after torquing the camshaft bolts with 20FT lbs in at 31:00 did you lower the torque for the smaller black bolts? If yes, how much?
It looks like he torqued them the same.
If the the rattle is 1/4 to 1/2 a second and definitely noticeable but not sharply loud... is it more of a nuisance and safe to keep going OR is it about to all let go and destroy the timing chain?
the new cam gear does it get installed locked our unlocked?
I took apart the cam gear after removing it and found that one of the 4 cogs of the inner gear (the one directly fixed to the camshaft) had completely cracked through along its width. I believe that had allowed oil to completely drain out of that passage when sitting for a period of time, and the resulting lack of lubrication was the source of that cold-start noise. I had no choice but to purchase a new gear assembly to fix the problem but that took care of the issue.
The problem was completely self contained within the assembly and doesnt have to be repaired (just irritating to listen to every coldstart.)
I would guess the broken cog is the source of most cold start rattles
Shadow Bisping how much was the expense? My rattle has got worse and makes my car start a lot more challenging
Erick T94 I bought the oem cam gear from the dealership for $330. I didn’t want to take a chance with the Chinese knockoffs you can get for about $150 online bc I’ve been reading about them not lasting long. I also installed a new $40 timing chain tensioner. The gaskets and everything were in good shape so I reused all of that. All in I spent $370.
@@pseudonymBOB I have the same problem with my 09 Corolla. The noise is annoying and embarrassing. Did you replace both gears? A toyota dealership near me is selling them for $250 each. Thank you!
Thanks Tom, can I use a Cam gear from a 1zz on a 2zz? I think it shows same gear when I look up online. Can I just remove the cam bolts and cam on the intake side or do I need to remove bolts from intake and exhaust cams? Thanks
Hi Celicagt1zz, I couldn’t find info confirming that they are interchangeable. They do look very similar, but may be very different as well. Need to confirm that where the 1zz gears Dow pin for the camshaft and timing mark are in the exact same place as the 2zz’s. That way if it is installed you will know that your timing is true. Also confirm the oil port passages line up with the oil ports on the 2zz camshaft. I wouldn’t recommend it because without confirmed data you could damage your engine. If you do install it and it works I would like to hear about the results. On the camshaft bolts you will have to undo the intake and exhaust cams because the camshaft caps are one piece covering both cams.
Thanks Tom
how do you mark the gear if you put a new gear on with no marks?
How do you know "Top Dead center"?
I have the same issue and am interested in doing this repair. What exactly did you do to the springs? I'd like to use/clean my old cam gear.
Hi Dsargent724, shoot me an email to sandersautosolutions@gmail.com and I'll be happy to forward the information to you. This is open to anyone reading this post who wants to review this information. Thanks, Tom Sanders
Great video! I ventured into this with my 2010 Camry 2.5L (2AR-FE engine). Smooth until it came time to remove the timing tensioner. For the life of me I'm not able to even get a good line of sight on the bolts let alone remove and/or reinstall. Is it behind the power steering pump? Searching the web suggest that some people have removed the power steering pump at the bottom of the engine, but even that was noted as brutal for everyone. Trying to do this the simplest way possible. Any advise is much appreciated. Thanks again!
Hi Steven, I was away from the computer for the weekend. Let me know if you need any further help. You can email me directly at sandersautosolutions@gmail.com and I'll be happy to send you Alldata and Mitchell info on the repair. I appreciate you watching my video and I hope it did assist you on your repair.
Mr. Sanders, after the new Cam gear is reattached to the camshaft and before reinstalling back in the head, do you need to unlock or lock the cam gear for timing mark purposes? Also, before reinstalling the timing chain tensioner, do you retract the plunger and lock in place with side mounted clip?
Hi Ron, torque the cam gear in the unlocked position to the camshaft. Then move to the locked position before installing back into the head. For the tensioner, install it with the plunger locked all the way in. Once installed and ready for tension on the chain I used a long screwdriver to push in on the chain and chain guide to unlock the tensioner.
Mr. Sanders, today I got my camshaft and gear out of my engine head. I hand tightened the bolt in the unlocked cam gear position, but when I went to torque it to 40 foot lbs., the cam gear moved to the locked position. This happened to me twice. I was able to get it unlocked once by watching a CZcams video where a guy put black electrical tape around the holes on the cam and applied air to the hole for advance. But know I can't get the cam gear to unlockon the second try. I seen another video where the guy uses a different method. Hope it works. Anyways, any explanation why the cam gear went to the locked position while tightening the cam bolt? Only thing I can think of is perhaps my torque wrench maybe out of calibration and over torqued the bolt and caused it to move to the locked position.
Hi, my car have the same problem...where are you located?...how much for this work fixed?...Thank you so much..
You always work with your watch ???
