I've been having this issue for the last couple weeks and couldn't figure it out, came up with a misfire code and throws the car in limp mode. Did this and it did great. Thank you, now I believe I can fix my issue
My 2009 Matrix [same as Corolla] has had the problem for over 2 years. [30,000 km] During the winter it happens about 3 times a week. During warm weather about 3 times a month. Our local Toyota dealership told me that it shouldn't be viewed as an urgent problem. It's caused by a momentary lack of oil at the VVT gear. It rattles for about 2 seconds during a cold startup. We live in a mild climate so it doesn't happen again during the same day . It adds up to about 1 1/2 minutes of rattling in a whole year. Toyota will gladly sell you the parts and services but from what I've read the problem can come back again. Although many will diagnose it as a starter motor or chain tensioner this problem only surfaces during a cold startup unlike a starter or tensioner. I've read about this on a few sites and it seems that it rarely causes the engine to actually quit working properly .
There is a tsb from Toyota to fix this for free if it's still within the warranty period. Under the drivetrain warranty. Better check it before it expires
@@kingh2310 chain tensioner is easy to fix. Just 2 bolts to remove it. A new tensioner cost about $30 bucks. If it's the rattle, you will need to replace intake cam gear under number 13050-0t050. @@JACKOFALLTODD Well guys my problem is very weird. My ac compressor has seized and no longer works i went to toyota because car still in warranty and they replaced the whole ac compressor assembly including the clutch. I assume that my compressor or clutch is going crazy on idle by itself and jamming up making alot of load on drive belt which makes the rpm goes under 500 rpms Causing the engine to knock and vibrate. My issue is different cause you can clearly see rpm goes down on the cluster and the problem happened 10 times with 5 to 10 seconds between every Rattle. Sorry for the long comment just wanted to share.

I swapped mine already I've gone over 90k miles with this issue I have all the parts together to fix it sometimes the solinoids are at fault not usually it is good practice to change them when you do the repair. There is a APB on this in the mechanics industry very common issue

It's happen to my friend 09 corolla + electric noise when climbing hill ??? I change the spare plugs ...@ clean throttle Still same noise !!! Any diffrent idea please ?
So you are priming the oil pressure with the backyard pre-oiler fix, that'll work.I wonder, the LS400 has a valve on oil filter that keeps oil from draining back into oil pan when off.Does your car have anything like that?Otherwise engine sounds nice, seems it has many many more miles in it?Look forward to the repair when you get some free time. :)
Now that I understand how the system works I dont understand how turning the ignition on would solve the issue. The issue is oil pressure in the vvt gear. Maybe turning the key on allows oil through the solenoids to pressure I dont just spit balling.
2009 Pontiac Vibe with same engine. Only 67,000 km (42,000 miles). When it has been sat for a few days in cold weather it will make a noise on startup that can only be described as a sneeze. Doesn't sound like your rattle. Is this a different issue?
Same issue on my 2010 Toyota Corolla. Changed the timing chain, oil pump, new tensioner, guides, even the exhaust and intake vvt gears…noise on start up still continues. 😒
So I changed the exhaust oil control valve and that took care of the rattle when I started it and I changed the intake oil control valve and that took care of the rattle at 2500 rpm
Really? Your comment from 6 days ago says you haven't fixed anything yet. I'm having the same issue at 2500 RPMs and I have no idea what to do. (I gave your video a thumbs up by the way)
@@michaellazarus8112 yes I haven't fixed this but I have talked to multiple mechanics 2 of them just fixed one about a month ago and have been doing so for years they own and operate a shop this information is in Mitchell online mechanics files for the industry on likely issues
Do both the intake and exhaust cam have vvt phasers and if so which side goes bad? How do you know which one to replace and does this cause a misfire at startup until oil pressure stabalizes in the vvt system? I have a customer with this vvt issue but also a misfire on cylinder 3 that takes a while to trigger a DTC after clearing. Ive already replace spark plugs, ignition coil, moved injector to other cylinder checked for vaccum leaks and checked compression but misfire remains on cylinder 3. Only other thing i could think of is the vvt causing this but why only cylinder 3?
This is what my 09 Corolla does but repairs cannot be done for a few weeks.I am turning my key three times but it only took care of the rattle completely the first couple of times. I turn the key til I see the dashboard lights, I do this three times. Am I not turning the key far enough or is the problem just getting worse? The rattle began maybe 2 weeks ago. Now I am worried I will be stranded and the thought of taking an Uber at 3:30am is also worrisome.
You should be ok although I dont know the condition of your engine. turning the key on an not turning the engine over wont make any difference. I ran over 70k miles with this rattle before I did the repair. Sorry about the delay I did not receive a notification on your comment
During night, oil goes of from VVT. Happends all cars with VVT. My Alfa Romeo was way worst. Variator gets blocket due to bad oil. Consume raise twice & pperfomace get 50% lower
That's what my 2010 Corolla has been doing and I just ran across this video. I went outside and done your trick 3 times and crunk it up on the 4th key turn and the rattling went away. What exactly is causing that and how much to fix it?

This noise is common with Corollas. No repair is necessary. The engine will run for multiple hundreds of thousands of miles with this issue. The expense of fixing this verses the need to fix it makes it something you just live with.My 2003 Corolla hasn't made this noise anymore since I used Gunk Motor Medic Engine Flush for two of my oil changes.
I just replaced the intake camgear, timing chain, tensioner and guides on my 2011rav4 4cyl engine 2ARFE. 2 years ago the cam gear started to rattle at cold start and progressively it kept getting worse and while stationary when revving the engine i could hear the timing chain rattle. It seems like if this problem if not fixed soon. Enough can damaged the tensioner and you could possibly blow the engine. Please don't use non oem parts and use good synthetic oil. Its easy but I bought the factory service manual and got it done myself. My knowledge and experience has grown exponentially on how this system works. I locked up my camgear and found an easy way to unlock it. The Toyota tsb is BS and a camgear and tensioner replacement is the right way to go by taking the timing chain cover off.
The 2010 Toyota Corolla makes a noise when starting the car for the first time. However, if I turn off the car and start it again, there is no noise. After driving it 10 times and parking for more than an hour, starting it again doesn't produce any noise. The noise only occurs when the car has been parked for more than 8 to 10 hours.
I have a Hyundai that makes this same noise. Tensioner replaced and timing chain. I still have the nosie. I'm at 249K and trying to make it to 300K. I just hate the noise.
Bit late but one of my customers had this issue and I switched it to gtx magnatec 5w-30 and a KN performance silver oil filter and it basically fixed the issue for a little over a year but he sold it so it could've lasted more.
I got it fixed at the dealership, 2500$ In canada, not even a month later it started to sound the same before I took it in to get fixed. I bought it used and got volks wagon (that's where I got the car) to pay toyota to do it... 2016 camry. Still works. Haven't seem a comment or video saying there engine is f**ked years after noticing the noise on a cold start.
Yeah ouch was right. The dealership didn't know what it could be until I showed them a TSB 41 13 for 2010 to 2013 toyota models that describe the exact noise on a cold start up, they replaced all the parts that were In the TSB and the noise went away for a bit until a few days ago. Loud and proud it sounds like on a cold start lol wondering what the root cause Is. I'm a bit disappointed the dealership didn't know what might have been the issue considering it was there own brand of car.
@@MrBananaFan I have put on 17k miles on the repair. It runs great im at 207k now. I personally didn't want to risk it blowing up. The maintenance manual calls for timing chain at 100k I went 190 on it. But I'm also capable of doing the repairs myself.
@@JACKOFALLTODD I am at 113 000 km and had the Chain, camshaft and oil pumps replaced and more. What was the repair that got rid of that rattle completely for you?
My 03 corolla did this from around 50k miles all the way to almost 190k, when it was totalled from an accident. That was the most reliable car I've ever owned. The only thing that ever went bad on that car outside of normal wear parts, is an oxygen sensor, and a wheel bearing.
Rattle on mine 09 came around 155k. Fix it before it gets worst. Will cost you about $400 labor and $250 in parts. The gear is what cost the most. The other parts are just gaskets, sealant and oil. You might end up replacing the tensioner while you are at it if you haven't.
Me again still haven’t fixed the issue 181 k now lol I’m honestly not sure if its worth fixing and putting money into .. it runs and drives really great perfect really .. but toyota says my computer is bad and the check engine light and a whole bunch of other lights are on for no reason said like 1700 dollars for new computer .. so im ignoring the dash lights bc everything is fine when i check it so between the computer and that noise it just seems like alot of money to put into it .

Just has dash lights on for no reason like air bag light , check engine for an 02 sensor I’ve already had replaced correctly at toyota , tire light and traction control light all for no reason wont go off they said it was my computer but they aren’t sure so with the rattle and dash lights i cant even sell it bc it freaks ppl out of course but its such a great car that i believe will go for a long time but I’m so over it at this point lol . My friends make fun of me when they hear that cold start😅
mine started out sounding like urs in the video and still sometimes does but i can say its gotten worse the noise gets worse over time .. especially if you let the car sit alot I noticed if i start it every morning it sounds alot better and wont even make the noise alot of the time .but if i let it sit and only start it once or twice a week that cold start noise sounds like someone pulling a chain thru an empty milk jug real fast. Toyota really messed up with the hydraulic timing and vvti cam gears on these cars .
This problem is in 09 to 13 toyotas and a myriad of Hondas. Its the cam gear / phaser gear combination rattling around because oil is not getting in there fast enough to hold the phaser gear in place. The reason you don't have this happen after the car has been started and shut off for a short period of time is that the oil has not had a chance to drain out of the gears yet. If your vehicle is not under warranty for this you're kinda screwed. This is a known problem with Toyota and Honda.

The shop manual states it's a 14 hr job I dont agree I see it being more like 5 or 6 hrs. Either way I'm doing the work myself it gives me a reason to take a weekend off from work
On top of that. If you leave it, it will get worse by day. I did just that and eventually the engine stalls on the cold start up along with the noise. Had replace it recently. Only regret is I didn't clean the vvti solenoid filter which is on that first rail you remove that is next to the cam gear. Once you take that first rail out (as you need to in order to remove the cam shaft to replace the cam gear). You will see a black plastic, pull it out and it's the vvti solenoid filter. Clean that while you have access to it. Or next time, you have to open your valve cover and also torque the first rail down again. Not sure which smart guy in Toyota put it in that ridiculous location but that is not the first weird spot for parts to be made by Toyota engineers.

My issue was the vvt system yours may be a different issue
@@JACKOFALLTODD
Well guys my problem is very weird.
My ac compressor has seized and no longer works i went to toyota because car still in warranty and they replaced the whole ac compressor assembly including the clutch.
I assume that my compressor or clutch is going crazy on idle by itself and jamming up making alot of load on drive belt which makes the rpm goes under 500 rpms
Causing the engine to knock and vibrate.
My issue is different cause you can clearly see rpm goes down on the cluster and the problem happened 10 times with 5 to 10 seconds between every Rattle.
Sorry for the long comment just wanted to share.
Hope the oil control valve fixes it.
My 2010 has 300'00 miles on it and doesn't use oil and runs like a new car .dont leak oil or antifreeze 😊😊
Very cool
This isn’t an issue it’s common in these at start up it will run for years mine been doing it for years.
It’s normal cuz the oil take time to run up specially in first cold start
My 2010 Toyota Corolla as the same issue I changed from a synthetic blend to a full synthetic I hope that all help
And did that work?
Update??
I'm assuming a lot of engines do that only briefly during startup. If the rattle isn't continuous, you are probably ok
Thanks for sharing your video. big help.
i tried to turn key on, but still engine start.
how do you manage to crank it without having engine to start ? thanks
i though it pressurize the oil system didn't really make a difference
Thanks for the video! Quick question: I've got an 09 Corolla with the same issue. If I replace the VVT exhaust & intake solenoids, the rattle will go away? Thanks
I swapped mine already I've gone over 90k miles with this issue I have all the parts together to fix it sometimes the solinoids are at fault not usually it is good practice to change them when you do the repair. There is a APB on this in the mechanics industry very common issue

Try turning the ignition on but don’t start the car wait till you hear 3 beeps and then start the car so far it’s working for me no more grinding
I was going to say this too! Own a 09 Corolla LE… this is also what I do.
Its most likely that same thing give it time. You have low mileage i was ove 100k when it first started rattling
Same issue on my 2010 Toyota Corolla. Changed the timing chain, oil pump, new tensioner, guides, even the exhaust and intake vvt gears…noise on start up still continues. 😒
@ratpatootie8623 oh that's not good
So I changed the exhaust oil control valve and that took care of the rattle when I started it and I changed the intake oil control valve and that took care of the rattle at 2500 rpm

@@michaellazarus8112 yes I haven't fixed this but I have talked to multiple mechanics 2 of them just fixed one about a month ago and have been doing so for years they own and operate a shop this information is in Mitchell online mechanics files for the industry on likely issues
That first repair fixed my issue for a couple of months the control valves regulate the timing system
It’s your intake cam gear needs to be replaced.
Did changing the oil control valves work still? Any reoccurrence?
Do both the intake and exhaust cam have vvt phasers and if so which side goes bad? How do you know which one to replace and does this cause a misfire at startup until oil pressure stabalizes in the vvt system? I have a customer with this vvt issue but also a misfire on cylinder 3 that takes a while to trigger a DTC after clearing. Ive already replace spark plugs, ignition coil, moved injector to other cylinder checked for vaccum leaks and checked compression but misfire remains on cylinder 3. Only other thing i could think of is the vvt causing this but why only cylinder 3?
I do not know in your case. I believe the intake came had hydraulic phaser on it i changed everything checkout my repair video maybe that will help

@@brendacroomes7214 I'm a sorry to hear that I've hear 1800 at a dealer some shops do things cheaper the intake timing gear is hydraulically controlled these wear out and cause a chatter until they are back up to pressure. I did all my own work and it cost me around 500 bucks. Basically if you can't get someone to change the Intake cam phaser then you need a new timing set gears phaser chains guides etc
You can’t blame the cam phaser a 100% it could also be the timng chain tensioner going bad.
This is true
The noise only occurs when the car has been parked for more than 8 to 10 hours.
that is how it begins before you know it every time you start it it will make the rattle noise.

Yeah ouch was right. The dealership didn't know what it could be until I showed them a TSB 41 13 for 2010 to 2013 toyota models that describe the exact noise on a cold start up, they replaced all the parts that were In the TSB and the noise went away for a bit until a few days ago.
You need to do the cam gears at the very least
Cam gear replacement
This problem is in 09 to 13 toyotas and a myriad of Hondas. Its the cam gear / phaser gear combination rattling around because oil is not getting in there fast enough to hold the phaser gear in place. The reason you don't have this happen after the car has been started and shut off for a short period of time is that the oil has not had a chance to drain out of the gears yet. If your vehicle is not under warranty for this you're kinda screwed. This is a known problem with Toyota and Honda.

It's your vvti cam gear issue
