How to Replace Toyota Corolla VVTI Cam Gear T-SB-0087-09
zhlédnutí 311KPřed 5 lety
In this video I show how I change a VVT-I cam gear in a 2009 Toyota Corolla. Reason for this repair is a rattle noise at startup from the timing chain. This is a problem that most Toyota Corolla and other similar models with the 2zrfe engine may encounter. I initially installed two cheap Cam Gears that I purchased off of ebay. They were JUNK and did not solve the issue. I took the original gear...
Thank you for this valuable video. big help here. Now as putting engine to top dead center, anything i should check on timing chain before disassemble it
This was awesome!! Well done!
You don’t have to remove the camshaft for the intake side cam gear
Put what on top dead center?
Finally a real Technician ! . . . I am a retired old school RR tech so not familiar with these new systems - My daughter's 2009 Corolla recently developed a severe power loss condition - starts easily but no real power any more. She was told that her best option was - get an exchange engine ! My problem with that solution is - - it's a total COP OUT ! . . . real techs don't do that sort of thing - we fix the problem . . . Thank you for showing me that this problem is fixable - - - TIME TO GET THE TOOLS OUT AND PUT THEM TO WORK !
How you know when the vvt is bad????
now It wouldnt hurt to put a few drops of blue locktite on that cam gear bolt= great video
Older video. Decent starting point but there’s some info missing id have questions on. But none the less, it’s a good tutorial to help others.
Hi and thank you for video. big help. Toyota came up with updated version of intake cam gear with item # 130500T050. I was told it comes locked. I have to unlock it, torque it on camshaft, then lock it !! is this correct ?
Correct, If it is in the locked position you have to unlock it before torquing onto the camshaft.
This is the part I used. Ordered on ebay for $149 GENUINE TOYOTA COROLLA PRIUS MATRIX xD 1.8L ENGINE TIMING CAM GEAR 13050-0T050
would you share the link please ? thanks
Just the intake cam VVT rattles, right?
Yes, just the Intake Cam VVT causes the start up rattle.
Thought the rear one was the vvt gear?
I was watching this video because I heard a raddIe noise with my car and search the cause thankfully I found a reason why and thought out the video I hear the song 31:35 A.D.I.D.A.S ~ Korn. Great video and thank you for sharing 🙏🏽
Great Video Thanks for posting the video. Do you lock the VVTi Gear at some point after torquing it down to 40 ft-lbs? Or Wondering if I should leave it.
Hi, thanks for watching my video. You want to lock the VVTI Cam Gear after torquing it down before installing back into the engine.
muchas gracias por tu video me fue de gran ayuda, para resolver el problema del sprocket vvti
@18:40. What's the wrench (MM) size?
Hi, I believe it was a 22 mm. A crescent wrench should get the job done as well.
Thank you for posting this video. I did my intake cam gear in my 2010 corolla a few days ago and the start up noise is gone. Your video really helped!
SO HAPPY TO HEAR YOU WERE ABLE TO COMPLETE THE REPAIR WITH THE HELP OF MY VIDEO.
Hi, Does the new gear different locking mechanism different than original gear ? updated version ? thanks
How do you repair vvti sprocket? Any video about that?
EMAIL ME AT SANDERSAUTOSOLUTIONS@GMAIL.COM AND ILL FORWARD YOU THE INSTRUCTIONS. THANKS FOR WATCHING MY VIDEO.
Bit of comment why ypu just change 1 cam shaft hear and didn't show how ypu took cam shaft chain tensor
HI, I HOPE THIS INFORMATION ISN'T TOO LATE. I ONLY CHANGED THE INTAKE CAMSHAFT GEAR BASED ON THE TSB FROM TOYOTA TO SOLVE THE START UP RATTLE ISSUE. I DIDN'T SHOW THE CHAIN TENSIONER REMOVAL BECAUSE THERES TON'S OF OTHER VIDEOS ON CZcams ON HOW TO REMOVE IT.
@sandersautosolutions4246 I have a 2010 Toyota Corolla LE with 125k that started making the cold start rattle two years back. Only happens on cold starts. I hardly drive the car. Will this rattle damage the engine or can I live with it?
Tough call. I've had others say they've had this issue for years as well. I always like to fix them because if something fails in the timing chain system it could cause catastrophic engine failure. Interference engine.
@@sandersautosolutions4246 If I decide to fix, how much should I expect to pay for parts & labor? Just trying to get an idea.
@@sandersautosolutions4246 So, I just re-read the description of your video and you mention the following: " took the original gear apart and pinched the springs tighter and re-assembled. This did correct the issue." So, you re-used the spring of the original VVt-i gear and pinched the spring tighter? Can this spring be bought from the dealer?
I have a 2012 camry with the rattle on start up I was under the impression it was the other gear from other videos and no cam removal needed Please help
Hi, The Camry has a different engine than the corolla. Email me at sandersautosolutions@gmail.com and I'll send you the info I have on this repair for the Camry. Thanks!
Just curious, why not change both vvt cam gears? And you have a video on how you rebuilt them?
I only change the intake cam gear based on the TSB released from Toyota. It is a confirmed fix for the start up rattle noise. I don't have a video on how to repair the gear, but if you email me at sandersautosolutions@gmail.com I'll forward you the info on how to do it.
Thanks for doing this - I appreciate it.
Ok my is a 2021 i have the 1.8 Cylinder does mine have a timing chain
How do you rebuild the cam gear?
So sorry for the late reply. Email me at sandersautosolutions@gmail.com and I'll send you the info to repair the cam gear.
Life saver!!!! Thank you for showing me the way!
How do you know when you reach the top dead center? TY.
I didn't see him change the 3 gaskets on the oil ports to the vvt sprockets!
Where to get torque specs?
why not replace chain and everything. They do stretch over time and mileage
Great video! Thank you for sharing.
😂😢
Wish I could do this to my 2grfe V6
Did I miss how you removed the timing chain tensioner?
Thanks
this worked amazing got the job done in 4 hours on my Pontiac Vibe and it saved me over 2000 dollars thank you sir
Hi i have a question, so i have a 2012 toyota camry that also needs a cam gear do i do the same steps as you?
Thanks for watching my video. The process on the Camry is different. Some of the same principles will still apply. Email me at sandersautosolutions@gmail.com and I’ll send you the alldata info for the repair. Thanks!
If I just want to replace the old cam gear with a new one, can I install the new one at the proper timing by copying over the marks from the old gear?
Very good, thanks for this very useful information but you didn't explain about the vvt filter 🫡
💐💐💐👍❤️💯
I used this video along with another to change my intake vvti gear. Thank you for the video. I bought the gear aftermarket from standard automotive. Vvt530 it was significantly less than oem, but on my 09 corolla s Canada made. The light shallow marks on the new gear had to be used to line up for timing. Just something to consider if someone buys an aftermarket gear.
I wouldn't trust any after market for such a critical component. But it's just me, hope you don't encounter any issues
This just saved me $1,200
Do you have a video of what you did to the originals to make them work better? Also, is it just the intake that needs replacing or fixing?
Do you remove the chain tensioner before removing the upper guide?
Worked like a charm, to unlock it I used a simple tire/ball air pump that connects to the cigarette lighter port. Wrap the electrical tape around, poke a hole and zip tie the edges
Same problem, i have a cali emissions engines but cant seem to find the exact part. Can i use federal emissions part or does it even matter at all
how do you mark the gear if you put a new gear on with no marks?
Do you ever pull the timing cover and replace the chain? All data is saying 9 hours for cover removal does that seem right?
I'm sure you should apply lubricant to the bearing surfaces prior to re-installing the carriers. Especially after wiping them dry as shown here.
can you just use engine oil ?
No@@saefhindi6184
Yo escuche que sigue el ruido al encender ?? O estoy escuchando mal
I had a rattle on start up, I watched and performed this video step by step and now my car does not rattle anymore! Thank you very much! 😊
How is it now?
@@SeeYouInHellDad Still perfect day and night! Does not rattle at all!
