How to Turn a 1 Bedroom Apartment Into a 2 Bedroom Apartment - Do It Yourself

  • Note: See answers to FAQ below.
A one bedroom apartment is converted into a two bedroom apartment, using a temporary "Floating Room Divider" designed and constructed by Andy Thompson (www.andythompson.ca). Construction assisted by Kryshan Randel (www.kryshanrandel.com).
    Construction Details
In order to adhere to residential tenancy laws (and reassure the management) this structure is "temporary". It is not screwed, nailed or bolted into the existing structure. Instead, it was "wedged in" using vertical pressure from strategic lengths of lumber. Foam and plastic were attached to the 2x4s that touched the walls, ceiling and floor.
There were some special factors that made turning this one-bedroom apartment into a two-bedroom apartment possible: (1) the carpeted floors with underlay allowed the 2x4s to be secured by "wedging" them in vertically, and (2) it's an 800 sq. foot apartment with a solarium (seen on the left of the screen), as well as a huge living / dining room that could afford to be a bit smaller to allow for the new additional bedroom to be built from the solarium area.
The wall is wired internally with HDMI ports and cabling for a video projector, as well as a "temporary" power outlet (courtesy of Adam Weidl of Weidl's Wiring).
    Special Thanks

    Film Details
Shot and edited by Kryshan Randel and Andy Thompson. Time lapse film created from over 10,000 stills shot using a Canon 5D and an intervalometer. Shot on location in Yaletown, Vancouver, British Columbia.

    FAQ
    (1) What's the layout of the apartment?
Answer: Good question! We had a schematic but the link is now dead! We will see if we can locate that and if we can we will add the link here. Keep checking back.
    (2) How much did it cost?
Answer: Around $1,200 (Cdn), which included HDMI wiring within the wall and electrical (considered "temporary" by our electrician friend; basically the wall itself plugged in!)
    (3) How long did it take?
    Answer: About a week (part-time).
    (4) Why didn't you show us the entire room?
Answer: Um... we realize that would have been useful. We were just making a fun movie as we did a home reno. Hindsight! Sorry about that!

Oh thank god for this. I wasn't sure how to make the dining room I never use into a bedroom without ripping shit up. I had no idea floating room dividers existed. It might cost me a bit, but it'll save me a lot of money when I get a new roommate.

Loved your video. I suspended a floor to ceiling tension system in an apartment kitchen to triple my storage and counter space. It was a small galley kitchen that when after completion I could reach anything from a seated position in the middle of the room. Best most efficient kitchen I've ever had.

The expenses were somewhere around $1,500 - $2,000 including the best quality soundproofing insulation, the door and frame, embedded wiring (AC and HDMI) and a small honorarium for an electrician friend to wire the wall into an existing outlet, so the wall could be "plugged in".

this is pretty nice! the thing that made me not like this video much is that you didnt really teach us "how to" like the title says. i wish i knew what you used and how you used it since I am not a builder, i needed the instruction. you did show us how YOU 2 did it but no explaining:( to show us "how to" build it. you guys looked like you had fun though. enjoy your space!

+Jules Aviles Hi Jules. Some pre-existing technical skill would be required to pull this off. By looking at the video and reading the descriptions if a person didn't say "I get it" then it would not be recommended. You could do it on a hardwood floor, but I'd recommend "simulating" the benefit that the carpet and underlay provided, that is: the "give" or "play" that the "sponginess" provided when wedging the vertical 2x4s in. What you could do it get some high density bed foam and custom cut it and put it under the 2x4 at the bottom and above the 2x4 at the top. This would also help with soundproofing, as well as make up for any imperfections in the surfaces that you're wedging the wall into.

Technically this wall is a "floating room divider". But the management did freak out when they saw all the 2x4s and insulation coming in. They initially said we couldn't do it, after seeing all the stuff. But after discussions with senior management of the property, they realized there was nothing they could do: it's a temporary structure. Just a sophisticated and "permanent-looking" one.

    • @utubestalker.dotcom
      @utubestalker.dotcom Před 3 lety +3
