    I think it would be fair if you charge him at least an hour for diagnosis, not your fault that it's broken.

      I agree. If you don't value your time, your customers will not either. As it was you saved him money with an honest diag; no shortage of shops that would try to hit him for a few hundred with some BS patch job.

    Pity about the motor, would be nice if the customer gives you the go ahead and see you fix it. I replaced all the pistons and rings on a classic Johnson V-4 (simmilar I think) after an overheating problem (impeller failed) seriously damaged the pistons. I was young and didn't really know what i was doing, but it wasn't hard (easier than a bike engine) except for a one hidden crankcase bolt. Anyway I must have done it right because that motor ran beautifully afterwards.

    O what a beautiful boat!
    A lucky bastard with that piston ring. Totally repairable if the exhaust port edge is not chipped too badly.
    Especially with that kind of engine the usual way is to drive until there is a clonking sound and the piston can be collected in to a dust pan.

    Brandon, I have a 87 Evinrude 88hp V4. I took the water jackets off to clean them for a overheat problem. I broke a couple bolts but, luckily was able to get them out. I would like to take the heads off to clean them, and put the new rubber water diverters in, but I am scared to break a head bolt or several. Any suggestions? Thanks

    Brandon, I’ve got a 1983 evinrude 140 on a 1985 charger. My father-in-law bought it new so always been garaged and cared for. Usually starts on the first or second turn of the key, except when it is cold. To my knowledge, all cylinders are fine from when last compression check was done. What is the best way for me to prevent this guy’s problem, a dead cylinder? An ounce of prevention and all that! Thanks in advance!

    Great boat! I have a question maybe someone could answer. I've been working on Evinrudes for 30 years.. Never had this issue. its a 1991 90HP.. Did T-stats, water pump, and head gaskets. I cannot figure out for the life of me why this water pump wont prime and pump water. It runs and pumps a little bit on a hose but if you put it in a barrel, covered all the way up past the split, it will not pump! It pumped after having it in the barrel and earmuffs on it but not on a restart after taking earmuffs off... What could possibly cause this?

    I can’t find anyone that will work on an old 2 stroke . I have a 85 force with the same problem . Power heads are about 400 bucks but I have never swapped a power head before . How hard is it ?

    • @BrandonsGarage
      @BrandonsGarage  Před rokem +1

  • @tedstriker754
    @tedstriker754 Před 11 měsíci

    New powerhead time. Or junk yard. Taking the existing powerhead out, having it machined and overhauled, just doesn't add up for an engine that old. Time to look for a newer engine and junk that one. The lower end may have some value for someone with a good powerhead. And a boat in that good condition is worth putting a decent engine on it.

  • @rottmanthan

    probably to much motor for that boat anyway, i know with the gt150 ppl put pretty bug motors on them but they are only rated for a 90 hp. i had a 79 gt150, mine only had a 50 on it, color for that year was banana yellow and metallic gold.

    you dont have a motor for him ? i find it hard to believe ! lol. if those v4's weren't so hard to split and rebuild it might be worth fixing , running right it still has good value ! It is a clean boat , worthy of a good outboard !

  • @dan8402
    @dan8402 Před rokem +1

    Ok so reasonably what is the cost to replace a cylinder? I mean we don't know what is on the bottom end, but the piston head looked ok and putting a new ring on it, should make it work.
