I LOVE Kirstins half smile! So cute!
Avi (the bass) left after their 2017 tour to spend more time with his family. His mother was sick and in the hospital with cancer and he was flying back and forth between performances in order to spend as much time with her as he could. This caused him a lot of stress and anxiety so he understandably needed the break. He finished out his contract and helped them find his replacement. I was sad when he left but I love his solo work. Be sure to check it out.
The contacts hurt Kevin's eyes. Avi left to spend more time with his family. Also, they filmed this in a kitchen for like $500 and got a Grammy off it too

Kirsty looked so cute in that makeup and wig, IMHO.
This was a huge success for them. They won the competition show The Sing Off, and there was a small cash prize. But the biggest part of the prize was a recording contract with a major label. So they all packed up their lives and moved to L.A. A week later, the label dropped them because they didn’t think an a capella album could make any money. They hadn’t even recorded a note yet. So PTX decided to take matters into their own hands. They recorded the song in a bedroom closet and shot all the video in Avi’s and Kevin’s kitchen. It cost them $400. They put it on CZcams and it went viral, and bam, they won themselves a Grammy. I’m thinking some record executive wasn’t very popular around the office for a while! They won a Grammy each of the next two years. I don’t know why they haven’t won any more, but still, three Grammys isn’t too bad!
$200,000 doesn't seem small.
This song earned them the first of their three Grammy awards. I think you can understand why!
The only person who left the group is Avi, the Bass. Scott, Mitch ,Kirstin and Kevin have been there from the beginning. Matt replaced Avi. Most people see Mitch and Kirstin in their "different" styles and think that they are different people. Again 4 of the original members are still with the group. Thanks for your reactions. I'm sure it's been said before, but Scott, Mitch, and Kirstin grew up together in South Texas and decided this is what they wanted to be.

If you haven't yet, a fascinating thing with this one in particular is to watch through trying to focus on just one person. You can catch all sorts of fun details that you likely didn't notice the first time through. That's the brilliance of this group. Their detail work is absurd.
And you would be surprised how many people mispronounce the group name the first time. It's probably close to half of the people I've seen.
Avi Kaplan did leave the group, partially due to being homesick, but also to establish his own solo career. I strongly suggest you comment on his Change on the Rise. It is a totally amazing original, and, with your tastes, you will love it.
The only member to leave was Avi. He was really home sick and the groups intense schedule ended up being too much for him. He left on very good terms and I think he helped the group find his replacement (Matt).
His mom was ill, and they were constantly on tour. He found Matt as her replacement!
@@drieuxkoeppel8152 Avi finding Matt as his replacement is an urban legend that has for some reason gained a lot of traction amongst Pentaholics. Avi may have been involved in the early audition process for his replacement, but he left the group in September 2017 and Matt didn't officially join until March 2018. He filled in for Avi on their Christmas 2017 tour, but even that was more than a month after Avi left, so his having "found" Matt seems unlikely.

When they received the Grammy for this Scott explained that the studio they were going to use cancelled, so they recorded it in a closet and put the video together at the kitchen table. Avi and Kevin pushed the song and probably had much to do with how well it turned out as they are both awesome musicians. Budget $400 I think. There is a live version they did for fans, no mics, no nothing.
I dont think I will ever rap my brain around what I'm hearing from these guys and girl . Just mind blowing every time I hear them or Home Freer.

I notice that most of the people who react do this with the same songs. So I'd like to recommend a song that is not that famous: White Winter Hymnal by Pentatonix.

They won their first Grammy for this because no one had ever seen anything like this before, and they shot it in Avi's closet for like $400!!! Avi is the only one that left because he couldn't be there for friends and family and felt that with Pentatonix's hectic schedule, he had to leave the group. But he has started now his own solo career, also quite successful, and you should check out Avi's channel, Avi Kaplan.
Great reaction on Daft Punk. A little FYI, this medley won them their first Grammy. I was also recorded in their friends closet for about $400. Kevin really pulled this song together with his beat boxing.

"Members change"? The only one who has left the band was Avi in 2017. It was because he needed room to breathe and he left his needs would slow down the growth of the band so he suggested Matt to step in. They have a video where they explain the situation themselves. And the quartet made "Dancing on my own" with Kevin's Beyonce stepping in as the "bass". Other than that, every time you think "who is that?" it's probably Mitch either having more flesh on his bones "in the early years" or trying out a new style. Or, it might be Kirstie wearing a different colored hair. :)
Edit: They've removed the video I was referring to. But I remember they had a 10 (or so) minute-long video in their channel next to Dancing on my own.

Dear Gitana, the one without blue contacts is Kevin. It is possible that he can't stand to wear contacts, I am one that just can't despite several tries. Gitana from what I remember Avi Kaplan left Pentatonix due to wanting to pursue a solo career as well as family. He felt that with the schedule and everything that Pentatonix was doing and how crazy it was he couldn't keep up with it and so he chose to step aside. There is a video where he talks about this if I can find it I will post a link here for you.
It was more from his burnout due to the heavy schedule and the fact that his mother was very ill than it was to pursue a solo career. It would be more than a year between the time Avi left and when he began recording solo music.

Avi, the bass in this video, left in 2017 due to burn out from the extreme concert schedule and his flying back home between concerts to be with his mother who was quite ill at the time. He had also been wanting to move in a different direction and at a slower pace so he took a year off to recover and write. He now has some solo work out on CZcams... check out Change On The Rise, It Knows Me, Chains and a cover of Lean On Me.

In Carol of the Bells, Kirstin has a lovely hair color, a mixture of brown and red. In the meantime she had every color, from blonde until black and even a steel gray.

This is my favourite PTX video by a very long way.
Look at different pictures of Mitch and Kirstie through the last years and you'll see: They are the same people who love to try new styles. The only members "changing" were, when Avi left the group in 2017 and was replaced by Matt.
Avi left back in '17; he just got stressed/worn-out by their schedule (I suspect he doesn't handle jet-lag too well; not good, with their crazy itinerary!). It was all amicable - from what I've heard, for his final tour with them they tried to put him out front a little extra, and ended each concert with a group-hug! Nice touch, that!
Matt took over for Avi; he's definitely a good bass, but I miss Avi's crazy-deep bass!

They did that video in a closet for 400 dollars and it won them a Grammy!!!! You really need to check out the wizard of Ahahaha! Avi left do to family reasons, due to the demand of the group the pace and never being home. and actually helped them select his replacement. He left on good terms and does some stuff on his own, but on a pace that better suits him.

Love this video from them, the fact that they recieved their first Grammy from it was just a bonus. As others have said, I'm sure, Kevin could not wear the contacts due to eye irritation. Another thing to think about is, does anyone think the contacts used in this video look like the video contacts from the movie 'The First Purge'? Then think about the lyric, "up all night to get some, up all night to have fun..." just something to think about.
The reason for the member change,was Avi wanted to slow down a bit. He had a real difficult time making the decision to leave the group. He is doing very well on his own.

Avi Kaplan (the bass in this video) is the only member to have ever left. This video, from 2013, is all original members. They spent 400 dollars and made it in a closet at home. It garnered them a Grammy for the arrangement. Avi Kaplan left in 2017 (he was with the group for six years of hard work) for a combination of reasons. Homesick during all the road travel required to keep Pentatonix going, and the fact his mother was battling cancer and he wanted to be with his family during that time. Avi Kaplan, since then, has made a career with solo music and with The Sequoias. He has his own CZcams channel to showcase his music, which would fall into the genre of "Americana." In listening to his solo music I believe he was destined to go out on his own at some point, his music is just that different from Pentatonix (imho).
This got them their first Grammy ! Gorgeous, made in a closet for $400. They rocked this ! Outstanding. Second Grammy is SUGAR PLUM FAIRY from the Nutcracker, and then JOLENE for the third Grammy sung with Dolly Parton.
I love love love “Light in the hallway.” I got a chance to hear it live and it was mesmerising. There is also a clip on Spotify explaining the production of the song.

Avi ...the original Bass is the o ly member that has changed. His mother was being treated for cancer and he made the decision to give up the crazy touring schedule to spend more time with his family.

Kevian could not wear the contacts because they hurt his eyes and made them so red so they found the glasses so that it would follow the techno theme

Avi Kaplan has a solo album out called “A change is on the rise”, which is the title track. It has been said that the song oozes Testosterone. I agree but it is more subtle. The song has a suspenseful quality, with men, possibly going out in the woods with torches to find someone who’s lost, and other things that men gather together to do for their village. It’s all hinted at. The first line of the song is “Fend off the enemy, sing out the Jubilee. “ Basically, we have survived another day. It is popular in the country music, but is a unique mix of Folk, Indi rock with a strong woodsy/mountain man theme. He sings a country standard, Abilene (an old west city in Kansas) and rides off on a horse at full gallop bareback. From what I could tell he probably couldn’t walk for a week. :-). It’s a good first album with three or four songs that are quite excellent, including the title track.
Aberdeen and the town is in California. Yes Avi is a bass and he is singing about passionate feelings.
This was a lot of fun! I have not heard it either.

If you haven't already, I would recommend that you check out Voiceplay, and Geoff Castellucci. His bass notes will amaze. For example, his cover of "The Headless Horseman", and their covers of "Oogie Boogie's Song" and "This Is Halloween" from "The Nightmare Before Christmas".

Avis mother was sick and he wanted to be with her. The touring schedule was destroying him. He did not want to make the group put career on hold. My understanding. Tbet are still great friends. He helped find his replacement.
Avi had originally left because all the touring and being with the group kept him away from his family. He is very close with his family so it caught up to him eventually and he wanted to spend more time with his family. At least that's what they've said multiple times on their original channel and in interviews.

You have to watch Pentatonix "Wizard of Ahhhs" video!!! It will blow your mind even more than this! Sounds crazy I know but it did me.
As others have said, Avi left for personal reasons. Another reason you might have seen a difference is that, over the years, Mitch has lost A LOT of weight. I'm not trying to "body shame" here, but I've often wondered about possible health issues on his part. Again, that's due to concern, not shame.
On a more personal note, this video is where I first fell in love with Kirstie's "side-smile". 💖

Mitch had to change his diet as he found he was retaining weight when he had gluten....so he cut it out. @@JoSedunary never knew that. I just thought that Mitch lost his baby fat, not saying he was "fat", just that he was 19 when they won "The Sing-Off" and his face/body had matured. All of them are gorgeous, and now Matt is the youngest of the group.
I saw them in concert 2 years ago, and Matt told a story about how his high school singing group was competing, and in the front row of the audience was Pentatonix and now he's a part of the group. Kevin also played the song while cello boxing that caught Scott's attention in recruiting him for the group.
How about those homophonic minor 9th chords near the beginning? I’m a jazz pianist-composer; when I first heard those, I nearly fell off the couch! Oh, and throughout there are sections where Avi is singing overtone whistle notes!
