The year was 2013, They had a budget of 400$, they bought those contacts in the nearest local store, they recorded this in a bedroom closet, they filmed it in a kitchen, and then they got their 1st (out of 3) Grammy Award for it.
Plus because of them the Grammys added A Capella as a category.
The $400 went primarily for a single ring light, makeup (presumably including the contacts and Kirstie's wig) and the editing software.
I *really* wonder whether anyone was fired for dropping their contract at that record label, because they had the beginnings of a gold mine on their hands with PTX - they must have lost millions as a result of dropping that contract.
@@margretrosenberg420 No one was fired. They signed with RCA Records, which is owned by Sony (which dropped them in the first place).

Kevin is sometimes called the Human 808 :D I call him a magical unicorn. He can beatbox WHILE PLAYING CELLO, sings in a beautiful tenor voice, arranges, composes, plays saxophone, speaks Mandarin, and was pre-med at Yale before he joined PTX. On top of being, by all accounts, one of the nicest humans alive.
Can confirm the "one of the nicest humans alive" part. The first time I met him was shortly after he had gotten married. The only thing my starstruck fool self could think of to say was to congratulate him. I must have been the 10,000th person to do so, but he still graciously thanked me with a genuine smile on his face.

This is a medley of 7 songs by Daft Punk. Thanks for the reaction. Glad that you both enjoyed it. Those eye contacts gave all of them problems. Avi's eyes are red in the video. Kevin could not wear them so he was wearing the cool shades. I think they got them from a costume shop.
I believe you would enjoy their original song, Love Again. It has a similar feel to this video.

Since you listened all they way to the end, you heard them mention "Run To You". This is an example of a *completely* different genre and its also a PTX original. You'll like it if you like luscious five part harmony.
Pentatonix have won three Grammy Awards... They were actually the first a cappella act to EVER win for "Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella"..
Doing so in 2015 (Daft Punk), 2016 (Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy) and then winning for "Best Country Duo/Group Performance" (Jolene featuring Dolly Parton) in 2017...
When they first won in 2015, it was literally in a category that was CREATED FOR THEM...
They are Amazingly Unbelievable...
It wasn't created for them, it was expanded for them. Created for them would be making a brand new a capella category. Instead, the academy changed Best Instrumental Arrangement to Best Arrangement, Intrumental or A Capella so they could be nominated.
I think the distinction is important because PTX weren't just up against other a capella groups, they were inserted into an existing category against industry standard composers.
I noticed how you moved over every time to allow that person on the video to be seen. I for one want to say YAY lol I had to watch this so many times because I couldn't stop watching Avi Kaplan the bass who also does more than bass..Avi & Kevin the beatboxer are absolute magicians. They shared an apartment in the early days and this was filmed in their kitchen, each person recorded their bits in a black curtain closet with ring lights. Ben Braum (spelling?) is the genius who did the production .... They were broke and only had $400 to deck themselves out...which might explain why Avi was naked from the waist up...well I'm guessing here lol.

Pentatonix is a fully acapella musical group for which they have won several Grammy awards. Particularly for this song
How does Kevin do it? I haven't the foggiest, but then I can't beatbox at all. I have noticed, though, that he apparently has an imaginary drum kit. Watch him in a video where they're all sitting down and you can see Kevin for an extended period of time. He'll reach out with an imaginary drum stick to hit, say, a cymbal, and you'll hear the cymbal sound. It's surreal sometimes.

I have natural eyes like their contacts, not so dramatic with the black outline, I get stopped all the time for my eyes. Usually from foreigners, they not used to ice blue eyes I guess. Lol
Kirsten's (the girl in the PTX video that is) make-up looks like it was done by a 3 year old (as in waaaaaaaaay too much) - but fits the futuristic style and that glitter "T"-shape alone looks SO cool. :D

you actually don't want those contacts. put it on full screen and look at the whites of their eyes. they are red with enlarged capillaries too. in fact i think Kevin just couldn't bear them at all and that is probably why he has the shades/goggles on.
