    Kevin wore a visor because he had a bad reaction to the contacts. Honestly since Daft Punk always had helmets on it works even better aesthetically.
    Their covers of Bohemian Rhapsody and Sound of Silence are insane, highly recommend.
    They also have some originals, one of them is called Love Again. It's a dance track.
    They won their first Grammy for this particular one actually.

      Daft Punk had a lot of great songs. So many where they couldn’t put them all on the radio. There’s been a lot that never made it to the charts that should have but that’s what’s great about them. They chose the songs to be on the radio and then let people find their gems in their albums.

    The first two Grammys Pentatonix won were for the arrangements - "Daft Punk" and "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" (an instrumental piece with no words performed by a vocal group with no instruments). Their 3rd Grammy was for performance - Best Country Duo/Group, in collaboration with Dolly Parton for "Jolene". They are also up for a 4th Grammy this year, for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for their Christmas album Evergreen.
    If you'd like to see them perform this same song live, their recent (sold-out) concert at the Hollywood Bowl (Sept. 2022) has a great video of it: czcams.com/video/a8PZ7_KMGM4/video.html

    LIVE SHOW? Try listening to the Official Hallelujah! then listen to their live version. They are the same. They can reproduce all of their songs on stage, even if they need to adjust a bit. Kevin beat-boxes for entire songs and sets. Listen to Kevin Olusola create an entire song in his studio while you watch. From silence to magic in just a few minutes. Kevin is a true genius. He sings tenor, plays the cello, beat-boxes, produces, speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese, is a graduate from an Ivy League school, and was going to be a doctor before this gig to form Pentatonix came his way. Kevin is a true Renaissance Man!

    The Grammy they won for this song was actually renamed specifically so they could be nominated, from Best Instrumental Arrangement to Best Arrangement, Instrumental Or A Capella. They've won it twice plus the Best Country Group or Duo Grammy for a performance with Dolly Parton. They're currently nominated for a pop album category for their 2021 Christmas album.
    I'd recommend their 90s Dance Medley live at the Hollywood Bowl for a shorter live performance, unless you want to watch the Daft Punk medley again and then I'd recommend the private performance which is not only live but also off-mic. Of course they use all the studio tricks when recording, but Kevin beatboxes straight through entire concerts, let alone individual songs or lines. The only thing he doesn't do live anymore is body percussion (stomping, especially) because it was tearing up his knee with their touring schedule. Now they pipe those sounds in... they started that around 2017, before that it was all live on stage.

You will thoroughly enjoy it.

  • @neetgupta1
    @neetgupta1 Před rokem +11

    Great reaction - I love seeing people react to Pentatonix for the first time! They are incredible and massive. Their concerts are amazing. They have been going for 11 years with only one member change. Avi Kaplan (the bass with the long hair) left for personal reasons, amicably in 2017 and was replaced with Matt Sallee, who is also great. They have loads of best selling albums both of covers (us Pentaholics call them 'upgrades') and originals. They have won three Grammy's - their first one for this Daft Punk medley that was filmed in the closet of one of their kitchens for $400!
    They don't record anything that they can't sing live so no auto tune or effects or recording several versions of themselves. Their cover of Hallelujah has had over 700 MILLION views. They cover many many styles including pop, rock, EDM, hip-hop, rap (they can all rap, apart from Avi, the original bass!), broadway and world music. They are best known for their holiday albums and covers but their originals are fantastic.
    If you want to see a masterclass in a cappella watch their 2017 cover of Bohemian Rhapsody which Brian May said was one of the best covers he's ever seen. All a cappella (even the guitar solo which Mitch - the high tenor - does with his voice!). As rappers, you should watch their covers of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis's 'Can't hold us', also Ariana Grande featuring Iggy Azalea's 'Problem' and Megan Trainor's 'No'. They are awesome. Also watch their 'Evolution of' videos - the Michael Jackson and Ariane Grande ones are my favourites.
    Mitch (high tenor), Kirstie (Mezzo soprano) and Scott (tall, blonde, baritone) have been friends since they were 8 and grew up in Texas. They sang in high school together. They found Kevin 'KO' Olusula who is their beatboxer and plays the cello (and sings, he's also a tenor) and Avi, their original bass in 2011 when they entered and won an a cappella competition called 'The Sing-off'. The prize was a Sony record contract but Sony dropped them after a couple of weeks because they thought an a cappella band would be unmarketable. They went it alone and 11 years, several best-selling albums and many world sell-out tours later, the rest is history!
    I'm in the UK and have been a fan since 2011 but am only going to be able to see them live for the first time in May when they come to London. Can't wait! If you want to see some of their live stuff, try Popspring 2016. That has their Evolution of Michael Jackson medley, and some of their originals on it. Also Aha live in Singapore (Avi blew the speakers - a common occurrence - on that one and Mitch goes insane on the high notes. It's a fan video so no copyright issues (which you will find are a problem). Or try any of the songs coming out of their Hollywood Bowl concert last October. Enjoy!

    I just went to their Christmas Spectacular concert that was AWESOME! You MUST listen to the beatboxer Kevin Osolo doing exactly what you were describing in his cover of DOWN! IT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND! SERIOUSLY...With that being said. Welcome to the PENTATONIX rabbit hole. Since they won the Sing Off thirteen years ago they have honned their craft to perfection. In 2017, the bass Avi Kaplan left amicably to start his own solo career and was replaced by Matt Scalase, who slid in flawlessly for them. The "trio" of Kirsten Maladondo, Scott Hoying and Mitch Grassi had been singing together since high school. It was Scott's idea to get back together for the Singoff TV show. They won and have never looked back. Their first big hit,HALALUIJH, has over 700,000,000 hits on CZcams. Besides covers, they write their own songs and have their latest Christmas album up for a possible FOURTH Grammy!
    Here are some ideas for what's next!

    Mitch (countertenor), Scott (baritone - white hair) and Kristen (soprano) met in school and sang for years before Scott and Kristen graduated and went to college (Mitch still had one year to go). Scott met Ben Bram in college, who recommended that he audition for a TV show called “sing off“. He got Mitch and Kirsten on board. Avi (bass) was found and added to the group. (Avi eventually left the group for personal reasons, and was replaced with Matt.) Five members was the minimum for the TV show. Kevin (beatboxer, plays the cello) was found through his own channel, where he beat boxes to himself playing the cello. Scott reached out to him and asked if he wanted to come out for the audition, which he eventually did. The won that season and was given a contract with a record producer. They were dropped from the record label and decided to start making their own CZcams videos to promote themselves. Daft Punk was one of their first big hits, and it went on to win the Grammy. FYI, Kevin wore sunglasses because he could not wear the contacts and sunglasses were a good fit for the video. Avi had a problem with the contacts also but he kept them in - thus the red eyes… the group has gone on to win two other Grammys (one for “dance of the Sugar plum fairies” and “Jolene“ which they performed with Dolly Parton. Their album “Evergreen” is up for a Grammy in the upcoming awards. They are also going to be given a star on the Hollywood walk of fame next month.

    Kevin, the beatboxer, had a bad reaction to the contacts, so they went with the futuristic shades for him. Avi, the bass with the beard and braids, also has super red eyes from them. They were apparently not fun to wear :D This was their first arrangement grammy. They would get a second for Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies (An instrumental with no vocals, performed by an acapella band with no instruments, wrap your head around that), and the third for best duo or group with Dolly Parton for Jolene, the only grammy she got for that song. They are up for their fourth this year for best Traditional Album for last year's Christmas one, Evergreen. Their cover of The Prayer (Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli, from the animated film Quest for Camelot) is absolutely worth a watch.

    I saw them September 29th at the Hollywood Bowl. There is a video that syncs the studio version with the live version from that concert and I think it's Daft Punk. To see just how far they've gotten since winning The Sing-Off in 2011 check out their latest release prayers for this world off of last year Christmas album. Pentatonix owns Christmas. If you decide to go down the PTX rabbit hole, and I suggest you do, the fans, the pentaholic, will flock to your channel. There has only been one change in the lineup. The gentleman who did the bass Avi Kaplan left in 2017 and Matt Sallee took over. Kirstie and Mitch change their looks often but the only change has been with Avi and Matt. They sang the national anthem at this year's College Bowl championship game.

    Pentatonix makes a point of never recording *anything* that they can't reproduce live.
    They won The Sing-Off (basically American Idol for acapella groups) when Kirsten (Soprano), Mitch (Contra Tenor), and Scott (Baritone) were just 19 years old! Kevin (Beatbox) and Avi (Bass) were only a couple of years older.
    Some of their other covers include 'Hallelujah,' 'Bohemian Rhapsody,' 'Mary, Did You Know?' and Macklemore's 'Ceiling Can't Hold Us.' Every one of which is spectacular.
    Avi has since left the group - amicably - as a result of the time needed to care for his mother (cancer, if I remember correctly) eating up too much of his time to keep up with the demands of their touring schedule. He DOES have a bunch of original songs that are absolutely phenomenal, however. I recommend 'Other Side,' 'The Summit,' and 'Change on the Rise.' Which has been described as "if testosterone was a sound."

  • @instafruit5121
    @instafruit5121 Před rokem +3

    Such a great reaction! Just be careful, the label is a bit aggressive, so the reactors usually put a filter over the videos to not get blocked. PTX does a lot of covers (upgrades, as we Pentaholics call them), but also have a tone of original music (which is also superb, but gets little radio time :( ). They pride themselves on never doing anything that they can't recreate live. For your next reaction, may I suggest 2016 PopSpring concert? It has 3 of their original songs and an evolution of Michael Jackson!

  • @michaelf8702
    @michaelf8702 Před rokem +1

    Definitely have to check out their cover of Hallelujah. Once you watch it you'll understand why it has as many views as it does. Other good ones to start with are 'The Sound of Silence ', 'Bohemian Rhapsody', and since you're rappers; 'Cant Hold Us', a Macklemore cover.
    If you're a Lion King fan, 'Can You Feel The Love Tonight' is one of their best, IMO.
    Also, their version of 'The Prayer' is mind-blowing.
    In some videos that are new or you will see that the bass singer who was also doing the wind noises, left the group amicably in 2017 and was replaced by another bass singer. That is the only change over the years despite some of the members changing their looks up often.

    Also check out Can’t Hold Us, Sing, Gold, Bohemian Rhapsody, Sound of Silence and so many more. You actually can’t find a bad “upgrade” (they don’t do covers, they upgrade 😜
    Oh and just know that the guy with the beard is the only one who sings the bass notes. He sings the entire time, no beatboxing. However he is able to sing his low bass notes while making the whooshing sounds you saw him do. The Beatboxer (Kevin) doesn’t sing any bass notes while he beatboxes or otherwise, and when he does sing he sings high notes.

    You can win a Grammy for some things that make no sense (and some rap performances fall into that category), but when you hear Pentatonix, you realize they are an incredibly talented group of vocalists for whom their voices are merely a starting point for a wild musical ride. PTX has original music as well as covers. They do a great job on Christmas music, but they also cover things as far out as "Bohemian Rhapsody" (Queen) and "Havana" (Camila Cabello). They are almost always pure a capella, though their beat-boxer is also a classically trained cellist who sometimes brings it along, for example their cover of "Shallow". They sometimes have a "guest" artist who might bring an instrument, for example Lindsey Sterling (violin) for "Radioactive". But everything they do in-studio, they can (and do) perform live. Their musical ability must be experienced to understand just good they really are. When you look at their videos from their PTX Official, check their "views" counts. They are in the HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS for many videos, and the site as a whole has literally billions of hits.
