    Fun fact, this video was recorded in the closet and the video was shot in the kitchen. They hired someone to edit it, and the whole thing was done for $400. Won them their first of three Grammy awards.

    There's no EQ in that. Avi Kaplan is a classically-trained singer and is a true basso profundo (a singer with an extremely low range). At a concert in Japan, he broke the sound system because it couldn't handle the lowest note he had to sing in one of their songs.

    One thing I really like about this video is that it shows off not only Avi's vocal range but also his beatboxing. Most of the time he's off camera when he does it. He does a good job backing up or playing off of Kevin, the main beatboxer. Kevin and Avi are awesome to watch and listen to. Kevin's 'drum kit' is just amazing.

    • @PotatoMinun
      @PotatoMinun Před 4 lety +2

      EQ isn't the same thing as whether or not Avi's voice can sing that note or sing it in a resonant way. It's just about bringing out certain frequencies in the master. A cappella bass and beatbox always go through a high level of EQ, compression, and such to bring out those latent aspects of the sounds. I know this because my a cappella group has worked with the same producers that PTX works with.

      It was recorded in a closet, but it wasn't recorded on an ipad. The audio quality is too good. They used an xlr microphone, which you can't plug into an ipad. Maybe it was recorded on a laptop, but not an ipad. Also, there was eq. Maybe not a lot, but was eq, just to make the quality a little better. That's just how music production works.

    I have that same Squier bass. I love the phenolic fretboard, and the eq switch designed for slap is really great.

    I thoroughly enjoyed your intro!
    Since Ben Bram won a Grammy fo this as well, for Production I honestly think he was who put it together on the technical end? Recorded and put it together per their vision for the video? Pentatonix has quite a lot of vlogs on their Official Channel showing them working out ideas they come up with during Arrangement sessions and then once they have an arrangement you often see them gathered around Ben (while Ben is on the piano) trying out their ideas and saying "what if..." then suggesting something he thinks might work better when it comes to his area of expertise in the actual recording of an arrangement and putting it together in a way that they can perform it live exactly as it is recorded. And they'll say yeah that's a good idea or how about we do this? And it goes back and forth like that. I know they've had other videos shot by other companies but Ben is their main go-to guy when they've come up with an arrangement and want to run their Arrangement past the person who's going to be recording it And putting it together. He's become an expert in the industry of how to record acapella musicians correctly. It's so fascinating to me

      He's definitely an unsung hero. I don't know if pentatonix would be where they are if it wasn't for him.
