They made this video in Avi and Kevin's apartment. It cost them $400.00 to make and they won their first Grammy for it.
They recorded the audio in a closet, for the good acoustics, but the video was shot in one of their kitchens.
@@margretrosenberg420 and then it was professionally edited and mixed, so it did cost more that $400 in the end. They only recorded t that way because their planned studio time fell through.
@@thechomiji Their venue for the video shoot fell through; I'm a lot less certain about the studio time.
$400 was their figure, not mine. FifGen wasn't mentioned at all when they talked about the budget, so I think they may have been talking about how much they personally spent on it rather than Madison Gate's budget. If FifGen edited the video it would have come out of Madison Gate's budget for the song. If Ben Bram edited it that would just have been one of the things Pentatonix was already paying him for, so they wouldn't have figured it separately - they would have needed to pay him anyway, even if he hadn't been the one to edit the video.
After watching lots of vocal coaches analyse the actual singing, I love hearing a beatboxer's perspective! Kevin truly deserves every accolade for just how remarkable he is.
They look so young because they WERE young; this was released in November of 2013. Mitch and Kirstin were 21; Scott was 22; Avi was 24; and Kevin was 25.
At the time Pentatonix recorded this their publisher was Madison Gate, a minor subsidiary of Sony. Madison Gate specializes in publishing movie soundtracks, which makes it a less than ideal publisher for a group like Pentatonix. Even so, it was better than just posting everything to CZcams and hoping to get some patrons, which is what they'd been doing before.
Madison Gate didn't have a recording studio - they'd had no need of one for movie soundtracks - but Pentatonix had already discovered that a closet had good acoustics so they were cool with recording audio tracks there.
Madison Gate DID hook Pentatonix up with an excellent video recording company named FifGen. PTX had a venue lined up for this video shoot, but it fell through at the last minute, so someone at FifGen suggested that they get some black sheets and set up a sort of photo booth in Avi and Kevin's kitchen.
The single ring light came out of PTX's $400 budget for this shoot, as did the makeup, presumably including the blue contact lenses. (Kevin's eyes couldn't tolerate the contacts, hence the visor, which is reministic of the helmets Daft Punk wore to protect their identities. Judging by how red Avi's eyes were, he must have had trouble with the contacts also.) I'm not sure, but I THINK FifGen supplied the black light.
I don't know who edited the video, either FifGen or Ben Bram. Almost certainly the audio was edited by Ed Boyer.
This won them their first Grammy, for "Best Arrangement Instrumental Or A Cappella." (As their co-arranger, Ben Bram shared the Grammy.) Before "Daft Punk Medley," that Grammy category did not exist - the Academy added "A Cappella" to "Best Instrumental Arrangement" just so they could nominate Pentatonix!
The songs in this mashup are:
âą âTechnologicâ
âą âOne More Timeâ
âą âGet Luckyâ
âą âDigital Loveâ
âą âHarder, Better, Faster, Strongerâ
âą âTelevision Rules the Nationâ
âą âAround the Worldâ

I recommend watching their private performance of this. Recorded on a fan's cell phone, just the five of them, off-mic., in a quiet room. The balance isn't good - Kevin's beatboxing really does need amplification - but you'll be surprised by how close it is to the professionally edited version. czcams.com/video/tw4YCsHXKgI/video.html
Thank you, always love extra information, and love the live stuffđ
DUDE! I joined you for your Ren content but I could not have clicked faster seeing that you are watching this PTX vid! I LOOOOOVE this!
Kevin wore the glasses because he just couldn't wear the blue contact lenses, you can see that Avi's eyes are quite red from them but he could keep them in. They filmed this video in their kitchen for, like, $200...it also won them a Grammy!
â@@clarissathompsonI love this kind of "lore"đ funny lil trivia
ââ@@Klownmusicreactsbro, I'd love to see you react to PTX doing this song backstage for a little girl from the Make A Wish foundation. It's live no cuts, no mixing, no mics & filmed with just an iPhone. It's incredible to see how talented and tight this group is without any studio production.đ€Żâ.ïž
@@robmarar Yep, this is that recording - live in one take: czcams.com/video/tw4YCsHXKgI/video.htmlsi=0czpMDTSDVN57hO2
Same!
Thanks for the reaction. PTX made this video themselves in Avi, the base's closet and edited it on the kitchen counter. It cost them around RN400 and won them their first Grammy.
Another EDM video which is written by PTX IS love Again. Kevin does some unique and difficult beatboxing here which he once mentioned hurts his throat.
You have to check out their original song called "love again" absolutely amazing đ
PTX is famous for their medley arrangements and their mashups. Some Iâd suggest are 90s Dance Medley, Evolution of Michael Jackson, New Rules x Are You That Somebody. Note that the first and last of those are made with the ânewerâ bass, Matt Sallee (2018-present)
Agreed! And to see Matt truly sing, listen to Pentatonix Official O Holy Night!
Your excitement always brings me cheer. I love how good this song is for showcasing how beautifully they all work together (especially Avi's bass and Kevin's vocal percussion). Thank you!
Not only was Avi, the bass, making the air noise you mentioned, he was also doing the bass line at the same time.
Wonderful reaction! Such fun!! So now do a classic: BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY! And then The Prayer, John Lennon's Imagine and Amazing Grace! You're on a roll and I've subscribed to continue listening to your Pentatonix reactions! YOU RULE!
Aaannnd they do this live! I also recommend Love Again (original), Coffee in Bed (original), New RulesxAre You That Somebody and 90âs Dance Medley. Super reaction- your energy and enjoyment were fun!
You should do Bohemian Rhapsody next. Kevin manages to stuff Roger Taylor's entire drum kit down his throat, and it's completely awesome. :)
Youâll LOVE their Evolution videos. Seeing Kevin switch tempos and beats is astonishing!
It is easy to see why they won a grammy for this
You give the best reactions! This one will make you get out of your seat and dance, and I love it. There are quite a few songs where Kevin will amaze you with his beatboxing prowess. Can't wait to your next PTX reaction.
Agreed! Additional song where Kevin really shines: Kiss From A Rose (beat boxing AND cello)!
Excellent reaction - So enjoyed it and being educated n beat boxing
You should check out âKevinâs 5thâ and Kevinâs solo of âDownâ
Kevin's solo?đ
@@Klownmusicreacts Yup, he has a bunch of experimental things on his solo CZcams channel. He plays cello too (both acoustic and electric) , so a lot of it is his "cello-boxing" - playing the cello while beatboxing.
their Grammy is for the insane arrangement
You looked like you enjoyed this alot. I am glad I subscribed to you. You are very entertaining, and educational. I love how you break down what the beat boxers are doing. You might be critical at times, but very respectful. I am learning more about how my favorite groups do what they do. You are also one of very few reactors that noticed it was Avi doing the wind sounds. I figured you would get a kick out of Kevins crazy fast drum in that one part. Kepp doin what you do.
One of the best comments i have ever gottenâ€ïž
Cool. That is nice to hear
Too nice to the ears...almost unreal
I think now you might be ready to watch their performances on the Sing Off :D
Good to see someone react to one of their videos and Kevin getting some appreciation
niiiice you watched this one!!! this is my fav of pentatonix(next to radioactive)
I think you would love their cover of 'Problem'! Kevin beatboxes and speak/sings at the same time, and Mitch raps in that one, it is so good!
Great perspective! I think Kevin doesn't get enough credit and appreciation as he deserves. I loved your obvious enjoyment of this amazing song. Breaking down the different types of beats was fun. My first visit was a good one!
Great reaction Klown! All of their evolution of videos are fire-Evolution of Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, Ariana Grande, Rihanna, Music.
i loved your reaction man!!!
every time i hear this im singing out loud, song makes me so happy every time^^
Evolution of Michael Jackson please
This won a Grammy...their first, I believe.
It may sound totally a studio production, but they can do this live too!
This shows how creative and talented that they have been from the beginning! Fun reaction, thanks!
Don't have much to say, other than thanks for the reaction! ....commenting for the algorithm ....hahaâ€
You need to check out their version of Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody".
Absolutely love your reaction - looking forward to you heading down this rabbit hole - this group is phenomenal
Loved the reaction man, Crazy stuff. "Love Again" if you haven't, their original EDM track.
Time to check out some cello boxing
This was done in Kevin's kitchen closet with a $400 budget
I am loving your PTX reactions!
If you really want to hear something unique, wait until you get into the Christmas music. Their version of "O Come All Ye Faithful" really has Kevin doing his thing.
So fun to watch you enjoy yourself in your unique way. Fantastic! Thanks.
Subbed! Gonna watch this reaction many more times..so enjoyable coming from a pro beatboxer's pov. Kevin is a beatboxer extraordinaire. Bring up more PTX!! Greetings from đ”đ
Hey!! I haven't watched PTX in ages.. I remember the TV show they first were noticed. I believe they actually won for that first season. đđđ
Great reaction. Thank you. They are amazing. I look forward to more of your Pentatonix reactions.
You might enjoy how Kevin goes a bit nuts in Coffee In Bed.
PS Avi can overtone sing so he can do that wind whistle while he is also singing a note
He has videos on You Tube to show people
How he does it Canât Hold Us is a rap song they have covered as well
Canât hold us is the bomb!
I recommend you take a look at Kevin Olusala cover of âDownâ by Marion Hill.
Safe to say that you LOVED this performance. You need to check out Kevin's Fifth. You wont be disappointed
Recommend their mashup, New Rules x Are You That Somebody.
Kevin couldnât wear the contacts so he wore the sunglasses
Loving your take
You really need to check out 'Love again' next. You won't regret it!!!
Im waiting for Bohemian Rhapsody and Dance of the Sugar Plumb Fairy reactions! Subbed for more!! â€
#THEBASSGANG
Love Again for sure, and Aha. Not necessarily the star vista version but why not; just remember Kevin IS there but out of frame. Maybe the evolutions of Rihanna and Ariana Grande for more close-up , live/one take work
Add VoicePlay and you'll have the Acapella trifecta. Valhalla Calling or Oogie Boogie Song. Yay!
Have you checked out Kevin cello-boxing yet? And his solo stuff - check his KOver of Marian Hill - Down

Hey Klown, first of all thank you for your videos all the time. I am really tempted to ask you to try a collab, you doin the beatbox part and i am doin the Bass part. Everytime in your reactions i am doing the bass part and i cant resist it. Your brain is always tingled by the beatbox part and mine by the bass part.
Keep on doing what you do.
Great reaction. Recommend New Rules x Are you that somebody and cover of Gold (if you enjoy beatboxing), Kevinâs cover of Down on his personal YT page, and off-mic Make A Wish performance of Daft Punk. No mic, no reverb, just them singing. (Check it out even if you donât react to it.)
