Welcome fellow pentaholic!! That's what us fans call ourselves. There are soooo many examples of what this group can achieve both in the studio and on stage. Some unusual ones are when they decided to do Gold...a Kiiara cover that was not great and turned it into something extra special. Kiiara used massive amounts of computer help, autotune and other effects to accomplish her "sound" for this single....and yet PTX did it without any effects, just sitting on a couple of couches with mics. It might help to at least listen to the original a bit before reacting to the PTX cover.
There are also quite a few "official videos" vs on-stage pieces, particularly in the Christmas stuff. They often do pieces we've heard in official videos at concerts, so we do get a chance to hear both versions. The Evolution of Micheal Jackson is like that. There's an official video ( quite impressive, since the whole piece is done in a single take) and there's the version they did at Popspring 2016 in Tokyo.. They did four pieces( three originals and the Evolution of Michael Jackson) at the concert. The sound and video were done by MTV, so it's really good. A worthwhile 20 minute video.

This right here is exactly why they’re the most successful and most popular a cappella group of all time. People try to compare groups like home free and voiceplay just because they’re all 5 member a cappella groups but Ptx has an edge that the others don’t. Their accolades speak for themselves.

Some folks will say that because their formal videos go through post that they’re not for real. This ends that. Even with professional mic balancing in their live concerts, they’re scary, even though they wear down by the end of a long concert. I tear up every time I see this because they did this as a Make a Wish.

What other group has such a solid rhytm section? Well, PTX is in fact on another level, and they specifically arrange their music to be used in live performances, although some post production has crept in recently. You may want to check out the making of Evergreen, it's roughly 20 minutes of short film that details their production process. Now that having been said, the rhythm section of Voiceplay and Home Free (2 other Sing Off winners) is pretty darn good too.

They have an original called Love Again that blows people away and there’s a live interview version of that song where they did give Kevin a mic because of what he needs to do in the song, but they’re in a green room in a clump. Watch that to blow your mind further!

LOVE your reaction! If you want to hear some awesome beats, one with Matt might be cool. A Mashup of New Rules x Are You That Somebody is fantastical. Also O Holy Night official video ( don’t wait until the holidays) and the VEVO live version of Kiss From A Rose is epic
Their originals Sing and Run To You are older and their original Happy Now is more recent For pure harmonies Amazing Grace, Sound of Silence, The Prayer and Perfect fit the bill. Their original A Little Space with Ateez is fun. Papaoutai, Perfume Medley and Problem ( live at a radio station) are cool

100% agree with your commentary. There are just no words to accurately represent their level of talent, performance quality, cohesiveness and harmonies. I’m in love with them, too. One of the many songs that shows off Matt’s bass talent is their mashup New Rules x Are You That Somebody. He is an AMAZING singer, too (Kiss From a Rose, O Holy Night, Mr. Grinch). Down the rabbit hole you (we) go!! 😊

This is the best video to prove that they are really as good as they are.
In their early work nearly everything they did was just their voices. They would balance and add reverb and that was really about it.
Also Scott, Mitch and Kirstie at this point had already been singing together for more than five years in musical theatre and high school choir...

Kevin may well be the best beatboxer on the planet, and both Avi and Matt are spectacular, in different ways.
Avi's basso profundo is just gorgeous, and his range is greater than anyone could reasonably ask of a bass. Matt, well, with Matt you should look at the date on the song. When Matt joined in late 2017 he was just out of Berklee School of Music and only 23 years old. He had a warm voice that reminds me of curling up under a soft blanket with a purring cat and some really GOOD chocolate. And he was totally dazzled by being able to join Pentatonix; he had already memorized the bass parts for every song they had released before he even heard that Avi was leaving, because he idolized Pentatonix. They were a big part of the reason he was pursuing a career in music.
The first live performance of "Hallelujah" I heard after Matt joined surprised me. Matt sang the bass rhythm line, but he didn't solo; Scott took both the first and the second verse. And I wondered why. I knew Matt was capable of it; why were they sidelining him like that? And then I found a slightly later live performance where Matt DID sing the second verse, and suddenly I understood. Matt's solo is totally different from Avi's solo. Not better, not worse, just different, the same way Scott's shirt is different from Mitch's shirt because they're different people and they wear different sizes. Avi's solo in "Hallelujah" was written specifically for Avi's voice, and Pentatonix wanted Matt to hold off until they could give him his own solo, written for HIS voice.
That second verse of "Hallelujah" is the best way I know to keep track of the changes in Matt's voice, because bass voices come into their own as the bass ages, and Matt was very young when he joined Pentatonix. That particular solo seems to have been designed to let Matt show off his full range, which appears to be growing on a daily basis right now. On his low end he isn't down to the blowing out speakers level that we heard from Avi, though he may be there within another year or two. But on his high end he comes VERY close to the top of a normal tenor range. I believe that Matt's range right now is the largest of any member of Pentatonix, past or present. You can find the latest good recording of "Hallelujah" that I know of here: czcams.com/video/FqphhPapkoc/video.htmlsi=tC6Ew07JGeQKQvDL
On rhythm, Matt works very closely with Kevin. His timing is so good that people frequently think Matt is also beatboxing. One of the reasons for this is that Matt is more subtle than Avi. You ALWAYS heard Avi's bass rhythm quite distinctly, but with Matt what happens is that people say, "No! I refuse to believe that Kevin is just beatboxing. They've layered in a genuine drum track." The people who say that are half right - they AREN'T hearing just beatboxing; they're hearing beatboxing plus bass, but they don't hear the bass as something separate from the beatboxing so they conclude that there are real drums somewhere.

It’s a testament to their talent. They are amazing. If you watch all their tour videos PTX Experience, they are constantly working on their music. Kevin just goes around best boxing all the time. When he was 17, he was performing at Carnegie Hall and they had him beatbox Beethoven’s 5th after he did a saxophone solo. He’s a musical savant.
