    This won them a grammy

  • @rfiliagaful
    @rfiliagaful Před 2 měsíci +35

This video was made in their kitchen and edited in the closet and cost a total of around $400. It won them their first of 3 Grammy awards no other a capella group before or since has ever won a Grammy. They also were awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last year - another 1st for a capella. Other incredible songs to react to would be, IMHO, A Kiss From a Rose (a live video), Shallow, Imagine, and an original would be good to hear, Sing.
Please note that there has been one - and one only - change in the group. The bass from this song (the one with the beard) left the group in 2017. Matt, the new bass has now been with the group for 6 years now, as long as Avi was. Mitch, the first singer here, and Kirstin change their look often, so don't be tricked into thinking they are new members. Enjoy your journey!

Their original, Love Again is a similar vibe and a must see. Avi and Kevin kill the drops!!! If you get a chance to see them live, TAKE IT! they are so good live. Kevin and Matt, their current Bass singer, have an amazing stage presence together. They were born performers! All of them were!

Pentatonix has over 300 songs in their catalog. Covers and originals, just a couple are "Havana", "Mary Did You Know", "The Sound of Silence", "Problem", "Kiss From A Rose" live Vevo version, "Can't Hold Us" Macklemore and Ryan Lewis Cover. The list goes on & on....

Avi actually did do a song with Home Free, they did Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash.
As for THIS video, I always felt so sorry for Avi, it looked like him and those contacts did NOT get along so well, his eyes were so red!!! There is a video of them performing this song just kind of on the fly. Look up 'Daft Punk Mix Private Performance'
My daughter went to one of their concerts, while Avi was still in the group, while I waited to pick her up, across the street, I was worried the windows in the old building were going to explode from the bass!! They are really amazing. I really like their songs Mary Did You Know and the collab with Lindsey Sterling on Radioactive (although not entirely accapella because of Lyndsey's violin). Their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody was really amazing also.

We do not think your over reacting. We all just can't believe what we are seeing or hearing at first. LOL, they are amazing. The best in my Opinion. Can't wait for your next reaction to them. They do this live in concert. They also have a private performance singing this with no microphone. There is no beef between Pentatonix and Homefree. Pentatonix loves everyone and will help anyone achieve their goals. ❤ 10 out of 10.

Look up their Daft Punk private performance. It’s just the 5 of them in a room with no mics performing the song for a private audience and recorded on someone’s phone. And all the skips & glitches you hear, they’re actually doing that themselves. Plus, Kevin is just that good with the beatboxing & Avi’s added bass lines.

And I think I suggested a bunch of songs under the Hallelujah video. You may need to take the time soon to do a whole Pentatonix week (or a month, although you still wouldn’t be able to get through all their vids even if you did 2-3 a day lol)

Definitely check Ticketmaster. They'll be doing a US tour this summer, so find a concert near you, but do it now...they sell out venues real fast!!
This is amazing and hard to believe they recorded and filmed it in their own apartments. Avi and Kevin's kitchen was filming and editing central and the recording was done in one of their closets. It was sent out for professional editing and production, but still...for a budget of around $400 for the basics +more for the professionals, they managed to scoop an Grammy for this.
Suggestions: New Rules /Am I That Someone, Evolution of Michael Jackson, The Prayer, Bohemian Rhapsody, Mad World,Sound of Silence, Be My Eyes (original), Coffee In Bed (original), Sing (original),.

And Avi did a quick cameo on "Honey I'm Good". Home Free and Voice Play individual members have also collabbed on a few videos. It could be that PTX tours the most and has the least time available - especially with everyone getting married and starting families recently! Voice Play rarely, if ever, tours. Home Free has probably done the most collabs with original artists. PTX DID collab with members from ATEEZ & that girl group from Japan. Also 3 times with Lindsay Sterling. Their entire 2022 Christmas album was collabs. Scott's done a lot of collabs with other individual artists and Superfruit did some, too. 🤗

    The members of Pentatonix
In this video we have, in order of first appearance:
Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), the clean shaven dark-haired guy who keeps singing "One more time," is a natural contratenor with a range of just over six octaves. Shawn Stockman, of Boyz II Men, said Mitch has "one of the prettiest voices I have ever heard in my life." Mitch moves seamlessly between chest voice, mixed voice, and head voice, and all the other members of Pentatonix agree that he's their best singer.
Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. Scott is the guy with white hair and eyebrows; normally he's blond but he'd recently decided to bleach his hair when they made this. Scott's range begins somewhere in the middle of a normal bass range and extends up through a normal tenor range. When Pentatonix's bass has a solo Scott can and does take over the bass's harmony line.
Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan, bearded white guy, is a lyric bass. Avi is an operatically trained basso profundo (his lowest notes have blown out speakers in live performances), but his range extends upward to about the middle of a normal tenor range. Avi is also the only member of Pentatonix who is no longer with the band; he resigned in 2017 for a variety of personal reasons, but he's since gone on to have a very successful solo career. I highly recommend subscribing to his CZcams channel: youtube.com/@AviKaplanMusic
Kirstin (also called Kirstie, which rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado, the only woman in Pentatonix. Kirstin can sing anything from low alto through coloratura soprano, and she has fantastic whistle notes on top of that. Recently Pentatonix has begun describing her as an "alto soprano."
The fifth member of Pentatonix is the black guy wearing the visor: Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth syllable), beatboxer extraordinaire. Somewhere there may be a better beatboxer than Kevin, but if so I've never encountered him or her. Kevin is generally too busy being the entire percussion section to sing, but when he does sing he has a lovely tenor voice that occasionally dips into the uppermost reaches of baritone, and he's known for the beauty of his falsetto. He's also a pretty good rapper and an excellent dancer. Kevin has perfect pitch. He began piano lessons at age 4, cello at age 6, and alto saxophone at age 10. He beatboxes while playing the cello, a technique he calls "celloboxing." He performed at Carnegie Hall twice when he was a teenager, once on the cello and once on the saxophone. He graduated from Yale in 2011 with a pre-med major and had been accepted to Yale Medical School before he decided to become a professional beatboxer instead of a brilliant surgeon. He speaks five languages fluently: English, French, Spanish, German, and Mandarin Chinese. He's one of the kindest people in the world, and when he laughs he makes the whole planet seem like a brighter place.
Not in this video: Avi was succeeded by Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable), lyric bass, who has now been with Pentatonix longer than Avi was. It's hard to be sure just what Matt's range is, because it's still growing. To find his current range I recommend listening to a recent live stream of "Hallelujah," though you should probably watch their official video of "Hallelujah" first so you can hear what it sounded like with Avi singing the second verse. You can find the recording with Matt here: czcams.com/video/FqphhPapkoc/video.htmlsi=tC6Ew07JGeQKQvDL
Matt's arrangement of the second verse seems to be designed to show off his full range, and it will blow you away. His lowest notes don't blow out speakers (though they may do so in a year or two), but on the high end he reaches the upper end of a tenor range. I believe he has the largest range of any member of Pentatonix, past or present.

There are 3 groups that are awesome a capella bands. PTX, Home Free and VoicePlay all of them are unique in their own way. As you have been told about PTX I'll say a bit about the other two, Home Free tends towards country, but can and do any genre these guys are very funny and you want to be able to go to BBQs and tailgate parties with them. VoicePlay us another band that can do all different genres also but are best known as the theatre kids of a capella, they aren't under any labels so can do their own thing, some of my favorites are Creep, Seven Nation Army, The Dragonborn Comes from the game Skyrim, Hoist the Colors from the third Pirates of the Caribbean movies and I have to throw in a Disney one, We Don't Talk About Bruno. Hope you will look into a few more songs of all 3 bands as the music is fantastic and you cant miss with any songs they all do. A lot of us are cross over fans of all 3 groups, this rabbit hole is deep, wide and friendly.

Not sure where you're located, but tickets are on sale for their upcoming American tour that begins in a month or two, maybe sooner. They sell out FAST. So if you're really interested, do get your tickets ASAP. After their American tour, they're headed for Europe. I hope that tickets are still available for you!

They are headed for Europe??!! When? And where do I find more info on it? I'm stalking their sites daily to see if any tours in Europe are planned but haven't found anything. Really desperately hoping this is true 😅

Looks like I was wrong about the European tour coming up. Thought I had read a couple of months ago that they were headed there after their spring/summer tour in America. Apologies.

I wouldn't say you're overreacting at the early stages but I have found that it's best to pace yourself with Pentatonix because they often throw in surprise moments later in their arrangements that really require the big reaction

You will think that there is post production skipping, so to disprove that you need to catch the "Private Performance" czcams.com/video/tw4YCsHXKgI/video.html&pp=ygUUZGFmdCBwdW5rIHBlbnRhdG9uaXg%3D where they stand at the front of a back-stage room and sing with no mic's and captured on a fan mobile device so the sound is not 100%

React to their cover of Macklemore and Ryan. They rap in that one or their cover of Problem.

Here is a link to this same song, but to a private concert on the back stage.
No mics, no effects, and they sound as good as in the recording! They are so good!

I have seen Pentatonix three times in person - they are as good in person. Watch the Popspring Concert which is a live concert. It’s about 25 minutes but its mind blowing how outstanding each of the four selections is and you will love the Michael Jackson medley 🥰

Daft Punk is the name of a French electronic music duo; they disbanded in 2021. You can find out more about them here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daft_Punk
At the time Pentatonix recorded this their publisher was Madison Gate, a minor subsidiary of Sony which specialized in publishing movie soundtracks. Not exactly the ideal publisher for a group like Pentatonix, but it was better than just posting everything to CZcams and hoping to get some patrons, which is what they'd been doing before.
Madison Gate didn't have a recording studio - they'd had no need of one for movie soundtracks - but Pentatonix had already discovered that a closet had good acoustics so they were cool with recording audio tracks there.
Madison Gate DID hook Pentatonix up with an excellent video recording company named FifGen. PTX had a venue lined up for this video shoot, but it fell through at the last minute, so someone at FifGen suggested that they get some black sheets and set up a sort of photo booth in Avi and Kevin's kitchen.
The single ring light came out of PTX's $400 budget for this shoot, as did the makeup, presumably including the blue contact lenses. (Kevin's eyes couldn't tolerate the contacts, hence the visor. Judging by how red Avi's eyes were, he must have had trouble with the contacts also.) I'm not sure, but I THINK FifGen supplied the black light.
I don't know who edited the video, either FifGen or Ben Bram. Almost certainly the audio was edited by Ed Boyer.
This won them their first Grammy, for "Best Arrangement Instrumental Or A Cappella." (As their co-arranger, Ben Bram shared the Grammy.) Before "Daft Punk Medley," that Grammy category did not exist - the Academy changed "Best Instrumental Arrangement" just so they could nominate Pentatonix!
The songs in this mashup are:
    • “Technologic”
    • “One More Time”
    • “Get Lucky”
    • “Digital Love”
    • “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger”
    • “Television Rules the Nation”
    • “Around the World”
You can find the complete lyrics here: genius.com/Pentatonix-daft-punk-lyrics
I recommend watching their private performance of this. Recorded on a fan's cell phone, just the five of them, off-mic., in a quiet room. The balance isn't good - Kevin's beatboxing really does need amplification - but you'll be surprised by how close it is to the professionally edited version. czcams.com/video/tw4YCsHXKgI/video.html
