      I believe they used autotune to bring to the front some sounds that are usually harder to hear like Avi's lowest parts and maybe some sounds in the beatboxing. It's not about tidying those sounds up but making them stand out more.

    • @thatsroughbuddy-
      @thatsroughbuddy- Před 3 lety +7

      They did this live in a small room, recorded by fans without mics or speakers or anything. And sure, it's not as well balanced as the clean audio version. But nonetheless, they do this whole song without any extra "help" and it sounds so good. True talent and teamwork right there!

    • @michaelbiggs4313
      @michaelbiggs4313 Před 3 lety +9

      @@ivetanovotna7949 That is not Autotune. They are all individually recorded multiple times. The parts are cut and pasted together with all of the volumes adjusted. That is the standard way all recordings are done. Melodyne is almost certainly being used. The reverb is adjusted in post with hard cuts to stop it from bleeding over. Very little has actually been done in this recording. Their mic volumes are also adjusted live in concert.

      Scott, Kristen, and Mitch all went to hs together, they knew they needed a great bass and Avi joined, and they saw a video of Kevin in college playing cello and beatboxing along and got him...they joined up to compete and ended up winning. @@leeproffitt69 I love both groups! Home Free and Pentatonix! Also, you should give VoicePlay a try. They are a lot of talent wrapped up in a core quartet with visiting singers who do certain songs with them. Look for VoicePlay's "Queen in 5 Minutes," or their "Mister Oogie Boogie's Song," from "The Nightmare Before Christmas." They have a lot of fun performing, and like to look a bit ridiculous for their fans.
      Avi Kaplan, the Pentatonix bass singer in this video, has collaborated with Home Free before, and it was simply breathtaking. Try Home Free's "Ring of Fire" to hear Avi and the Home Free guys.
      All three of these groups have amazing harmonies, awe-inspiring bass singers, and jaw-dropping beatboxers, but I believe that Home Free's beatboxer (and founding member), Adam Rupp, is by far the best. He does a 9-11 minute drum solo in their live shows, where it's just him and his microphone, sitting on a barstool, and I swear you can see the drumsticks flying!
      All three of their bass men, though, are the real reason I am a Pentaholic Home Fry VoicePlayer. I would die a happy woman to see all three of them performing onstage together, doing a bass battle!

    Kevin is awesome, period. He has a pre-med degree from Yale. He speaks five languages, including Mandarin. He's classically trained on piano, saxophone, and cello, and before Pentatonix ever heard of him he'd already performed at Carnegie Hall twice, once on saxophone and once on cello. He beatboxes *while* playing the cello, a technique that he invented and which he calls "celloboxing." He's one of the best beatboxers on the planet, if not *the* best, and on the rare occasions when he isn't too busy being the entire percussion section to solo he has a lovely tenor voice and is known for the beauty of his falsetto range (I'm not certain, but I *think* he can actually sing a bit higher than Mitch). But I've also heard him sing in the upper end of the baritone range. And when he laughs the whole world seems like a brighter place.
    The trio were very lucky to find Kevin, back when they were looking for a beatboxer to round out the band, and they readily acknowledge this fact.

    Be aware. The bass here (Avi Kaplan) left the group in 2017-their pace of arranging-rehearsing-recording-touring was tough for him. Perfecting their sounds takes many many hours. Avi’s mom was ill-and he was having to fly home frequently. He helped choose the new bass, Matt Sallee. It may LOOK like they changed other members...but Mitch (counter-tenor, high male voice) is a chameleon-changing his hair and startle constantly. Kirstie has also changed her hair frequently. Avi is the only member who left and was replaced!!

    So fun fact about Kevin (beatboxer) and Avi (bass), they both do both, there's a video somewhere of them switching between parts of the rhythm section depending on what's needed. Also Scott (tall blonde) sometimes does the bass line when Avi is singing main tune, like in their It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year. Avi also has done some incredible solo stuff lately

    I worked a show of theirs in Chicago. When they came out for soundcheck I about fell over upon hearing them with just microphones. I thought that they were singing to a backing track. They are 100% real top to bottom, front to back. Avi has gone on to do some amazing solo work. You should check him out and do a reaction to one of his songs. They are all amazing.

    I took 2 seconds to like and subscribe because you seem like a nice person and I'd like to see more of your reactions. I could write a University paper on Pentatonix, I've been a super-fan since their first performance on The Sing Off. Scott (white hair) and Mitch (short black hair) met doing theater in Texas as kids, went to separate schools, and then went to the same high school. Scott and Kirstin were already best friends at that school. They made some videos as a trio, and then when a friend of Scott's did an earlier season of The Sing-Off, she suggested Scott form a bigger group and audition. (edited to add): This friend apparently told Scott "you could win that show."
    They found Kevin on CZcams beatboxing while playing the cello, and Avi was already an established acapella artist. They met for the first time the DAY BEORE the audition for The Sing Off. Listen to their first performance and tell me it sounds like a one day rehearsal! On the show Shawn Stockman called Avi and Kevin "Meat and Potatoes" for how well they complimented each other.

    The craziest part... you would think they use 'loop' to make those non-syllabic sounds, but they nail this LIVE on stage acapella. It's almost like they've invented a new form of audible art.

  • @RyanSandberg
    @RyanSandberg Před 3 lety

    Kevin does the beatboxing, and Avi is the bass. They do work together to make the melody. Avi can blow speakers with his bass if you haven't seen that, it's pretty crazy.

  • @martinhafner2201
    @martinhafner2201 Před 3 lety

    Kevin does almost all the effects. They are all contributing whoosh sounds. Avi often follows Kevin's kick drum with a bass push that makes it sound like one thing, but it is really both of them.
    If you do like this kind of energy, then try Love Again for more crazy dance club techno and Sing for happy energy. In fact, Sing is a great way to kick start a sluggish morning when you are in covid lockdown.

    The one thing I really love about Pentatonix is their group as a whole. Like, in their songs usually each person has a part to sing and the others will just do back vocals to help accentuate the current leads part BUT there are times when more than one person is singing. Whether one person is singing or more, the lead is always able to be heard clearly and the collective singers always compliment one another. It makes every song they do, whether upbeat or more somber, sound so good.

    • @ScribblyDoodle
      @ScribblyDoodle Před rokem

      Kevin is amazing, but he's not in the same league (in terms of technical ability) of the top beatboxers in the world. Dlow, Den, Hiss, Trung Bao, Codfish, Napom, Dharni, King Inertia, Alexinho, Vocoda, Remix, Tom Thum, B-Art, Pash, Gene, MB14, Helium, Kenny Urban, Chiwawa, just to name a few beatbox gods.
      That's not to say that Kevin hasn't been super influential to many beatboxers, because of course he has, and he's really good. But from a competitive standpoint he wouldn't stand even a small chance against any of the top beatboxers today.

Avi and Kevin are masters of the rhythm section. Brilliant trio ....but for me Avi & Kevin are just magicians in this.
