    Totally was waiting for your reaction to Mitch's "guitar solo" The moment you realized it was Mitch was priceless! Your face said it all!!. When I saw them in concert the 2nd time, they performed this, Mitch does the guitar with JUST a microphone. Brian May shared their video of this, and gave them props, he was impressed. Seriously love this

      "JUST a microphone." And probably about $100,000 of mixing boards, equalizers, compressors, monitoring equipment, and at least one professional sound engineer present to run all of it.
      Why does everyone keep assuming that microphones are _not_ high-end audio equipment, without which PTX could not sound like they do, or that the tens of thousands of dollars of concert-grade audio gear the mic is connected to can't reproduce the sound of a $50 megaphone?
      You can find videos of PTX performing without all of this, just recorded on a camera microphone at private gigs, and they sound just like you'd expect. That is, the balance is way off, with Scott's powerful voice completely overwhelming most of the others; anyone singing higher up in their register is louder than those singing down low; correspondingly, Avi is almost completely inaudible because basses just aren't very loud, especially down in their lowest chest range and subharmonic register; and Kevin just sounds like some dude beatboxing on the corner, rather than like a very well-miked and mixed drum kit.
      *And there's nothing wrong with that!* If we were not, collectively as a society, fundamentally _okay_ with the use of such technologies and techniques while still considering it acapella, then we would still all just be listening to opera all the time, because _that_ is what it takes for a single human voice to project over and above a backing chorus and orchestra.

    • @Bpg5012trick
      @Bpg5012trick Před 3 lety +1

      @@barefootalien In short the volume on the mics are set to level up everyone, nothing to do with effecting their voices or the tone of their voices, any way every musicians mic is set up like that in concert, but a lot don't sound the same live as recorded , which PTX do.

    • @uneagerly
      @uneagerly Před 3 lety

      @@barefootalien no one is implying microphones aren't advanced equipment. they're simply saying that ptx does the bare minimum in editing, just to level and enhance their voices. no auto tune, no fancy editing tricks, no instruments.

    I believe the couch setting is also a metaphor for their career. Their prize for winning the Sing Off in 2012 was a $200K recording contract. The recording company management changed, and the label dropped them. PTX used the money to move the group to LA. They started recording videos singing on a couch to keep in contact with their Sing Off fans. Their quality of work grew the fan base. They eventually were able to tour the world (star scape reference?), but at the end of the day, they are still the friends making music together on the couch. Scott said they wanted to perform this song for years, but waited until they could do it justice.
    Unfortunately for the fans, Avi left soon after this for personal reasons. Fortunately for the fans, he helped find his replacement so the band didn't have to break up. Avi's doing wonderful solo work now. I highly recommend "Change on the Rise" if you haven't seen any of his work yet.

    This entire video was shot on a street outdoors on a cold night. They started filming right after sunset and finished right before sunrise. You talked about how they even sit on the couch perfectly. Well there's a VERY entertaining behind the scenes video about the making of this where you can see each of the members having all kinds of issues with the moving couch! It's funny AF! Also, Mitch using the megaphone was only for visual effect. Whenever they perform this song live, Mitch doesn't use the megaphone and he STILL sounds like a guitar! Queen guitarist Brian May loved this video so much that he posted it on all of his social media platforms as soon as it came out. And I agree with this being Top Five. My other four are Daft Punk, Hallelujah, Sound of Silence and Imagine (no particular order), but there's about 25 others I can put in there too.

    Watching you (again) excited to see you react to Bohemian Rhapsody was in itself epic. However, I did read through all the posts but many fans aren't aware that there's a special reason their videos are outstanding, unique, and only they can do is bc .. the original 3, Kirstin, Mitch, and Scott went to high school in Austin TX and took theatrical courses. When they entered a TV Radio contest, the rules were they had to be a 5 member 'band'. Through the internet ( I believe) they auditioned and took Avi and Kevin into the group. If you turn off the volume, play their videos, it becomes clearer. Truly they are performers and noone matches them. They are in a league alone. Additionally, it took 5 years to complete Bohemian Rhapsody bc they wanted to do it 'justice' to Freddy. "THIS" is what you just watched 😁.
    Also, Brian May, lead guitarist (Queen), and astrophysicist was in one of the PTX audiences and made a comment on his FB page how GREAT they were.

    That panning was in the original by Queen. They study their covers carefully, so they're not likely to miss any major design elements.
    Kevin was very concerned about getting the drums right. They could have done this cover a few years earlier, but by waiting and finding solutions to most of the arrangement concerns, they have produced a stunning song.
    Mitch doesn't need the megaphone. That is just fun for the visuals.

    Just so you know, on stage Mitch made the "guitar solo" without any device ;) There are records of shows where you can see that. The' megaphone here is just for the visual in the video!

  • @Phlippan87
    @Phlippan87 Před 3 lety

    There's so much you ought to watch that are not regular music videos with PTX, their solo-projects for one (Scott's oldie but goodie "I Should Tell Your Mama On Ya", Kevin's interpretation of "Down" etc.) and Avi's overtones

    Hey, New subscriber from TEXAS, USA! First off, love your music. Very unique rap style, which is so different than the "generic" style we have over here. Keep it going! Also, if you like Pentatonix, then may I suggest that you listen to the "spin-off" or side project of Mitch and Scott called "Superfruit!" WILL BLOW YOUR MIND! But I think you need to listen to and if you like do a reaction to Pentatonix colab with Todrick Hall, "Wizard of Ahh's!" Amazing stuff. Again, great channel!

    The shooting stars were in tribute to Brian may (lead guitarist of queen) being an astronomer

  • @CabinFever52

    That panning effect was on the original by Queen, as well. Avi was also singing the exact bass guitar from Queen. They hit everything spot on and it was figgin cold that night. If you haven't already seen their covers for Come Along, Aha and for Can't Hold Us---well then, YOU SHOULD!

    I miss Avi too and wish he was still there but it is what it is, I rarely listen to his solo stuff just not my type of music. Matt is pretty awesome too now he is settled in.

    In my own humble opinion, Mitch was channeling Freddie Mercury in his solos. If you watched the original Queen video of this you can see the parts where PTX pays tribute to the original.

  • @debhouckscraftycottage9288

    There's a behind the scenes video on this you might want to watch. There were some mishaps and such. lol Yes, this is up there for me too. Hallelujah and Mary Did You Know are tops just because those 2 are how I found PTX. This one, Gold, oh gosh - I can't decide on the 5th (toss up - Daft Punk Medley, Love Again, Say Something, Run to You, Cracked, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy....). Also, congratulations on the baby. Life definitely changes when you have children. Enjoy! They grow up fast!

    Avi - didn't ad lib that is in the original - they also kept the panning the same as the original - the iconic lighting - they tried to pay homage to the Queen video with that - this is a pretty straight forward sonic recreation of Queen's piece, just using their voices and some fun ingenuity - they always impress :)

    Happy (belated) Christmas & hopes that 2021 isn't the dumpster fire that 2020 has been across the globe. Your videos have brought me a whole lot of happiness, and kept me from Grinching out when I had to spend Christmas alone. Thanks for the smiles, Bayo! Keep posting. You're awesome. (Oh, and PTX's version of "Bohemian Rhapsody is in my top five of all time, along with their version of "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies".)

    One year olds will definitely make life hectic. My son's 4 now and still hectic haha! My top 5 PTX are definitely Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine, New Rules X Are You That Somebody, Mr Grinch and the live in Singapore Aha video. My son also loves Pentatonix and keeps singing the intro to Deck the Halls and attempting to beatbox
