Scott is apparently notorious for forgetting lyrics.
This was their first Grammy... They recorded it in Avi and Kevin's kitchen and closet for $400!
Matt doesn't go as low as Avi can, but he has an uncanny ability to sound like instruments. Check out their mashup New Rules x Are You That Somebody, and their original song Coffee In Bed, both of which have Matt's rich bass as their underpinning.
Matt is legit a walking breathing bass line. I love it.
Could you imagine if Avi _and_ Matt were on bass together? Wonder if Avi would ever consider hopping on as a guest star. Though, thinking about it, could cause problems with portions of the fan base.
Matt and Scoot have extended ranges, which end up being pretty nearly identical...but when you hear their respective vocal qualities in various octaves/voices, you gain true understanding of the distinction between "bass" and "baritone"
Avi had an "edge" to him- especially in this video: that wide-eyed stare and the little shakes of his head he did. Almost robotic, a little carnivore, a bit of that unknown quality that he might just be more than a little unhinged. When he would drop those deep, deep lows, it would shake you. In other music videos from his era as well, I often pegged him as the "bad boy" archetype.
Matt has none of that at all: he has pure "bring him home to meet your mother" wholesomeness in his smile, which crinkles his eyes. His voice is buttery smooth and soothing, throughout his range. If anything, Mitch has sort of taken on more of the "bad boy" elements in his style- physical style of dress and grooming and expression, and in his vocal style as well.
It's been interesting watching how the group has evolved over the years they've been together.
-My 2¢
Hard to replicate the graphics on stage...otherwise terrific like all their live stuff
Avi's voice always gives me chills. It's so beautiful throughout his range.
Definitely. I get goosebumps every time 😅😅😊😊
Totally agree
you hear this especially in hallelujah, his bari-tenor range is gorgeous and caramelly
I love it when Avi does a beat drop straight into the BASSment.
Their Grammy was well earned.
Considering there was about 7 or 8 years between the two performances with a change in the Bass and live vs recorded, it is really close. They have the lyrics up because Scott is notorious for forgetting lyrics, as he says he forgets the lyrics even to songs that he wrote the lyrics. 😂.
Something he and Avi have in common, I guess!
There is also a "Private Performance" of this with them just stood at the front of a room with no mic's and captured on a mobile device. Kevin and Avi are a little quiet as they need the audio boost of the PA compared to the trio, but it PROVES they can and DO as good a job live!
But you can see them both putting in the effort, you know it's there for sure (especially Avi, he's working so hard, and the audio is so bad you can't hear him on his lowest notes).
It's truly an amazing video.
You're exactly correct: they come across so amazingly authentic in the studio version (regardless of reverb / editing etc) BECAUSE they can do it flawlessly live so it looks effortless in any case.
Yep, Matt's bass is quite warm. Yep, Kirstie still knows how to deliver a cheeky smile, Yep, Mitch is rocking his current look as always, Yep, they always have the lyrics because Scotty is notorious for blanking on lyrics, and Yep, Scott is on fire live. Kevin is a monster in this song. This was their first big live show post quarantine, and they were all having a blast. Great reaction!
I didn't know that (Scott and lyric blanks). Too funny! That kind of makes me happy - because it proves he's actually human. Sometimes you hear what they can do and you're just not sure...
@@jeffk1482 Right? LOL
For more Matt- Sound of Silence, Mr. Grinch and New RulesxAre You That Somebody (🤯 bass line)
Yes 💯
Are you shocked that they won their first Grammy for this?it truly is spectacular.
Also, these guys never put out a song on tape that they can’t do live. Incredibly talented!
LOVE how knocked out you are by them! You are officially a PENTAHOLIC! Another early "costumed" original that you'd love is LOVE AGAIN! Keep them coming! 🤣
There are 7 Daft (rhymes with "raft") Punk songs in this mashup: Technologic, One More Time, Get Lucky, Digital Love, Harder-Better-Faster-Stronger, Television Rules the Nation, and Around the World.
Pentatonix is currently touring in Japan. PTX appeared on a Japanese TV show to promote their tour and performed several songs, including Daft Punk -and Kirstie sang her solo of Digital Love completely in Japanese!
The monitors with lyrics are for everyone, but primarily for Scott - who is notorious for forgetting lyrics. I saw an interview where all of them were asked who was most likely to forget lyrics, and all of them said Scott - including Scott himself, who has said he could be singing the Happy Birthday song and forget the lyrics midway through! 😄
If you want to hear Matts bass, "the Grinch" is done with him primarily. It is incredibly good and entertaining!
Such a fun reaction!! I'm so stoked that you liked it so much ...and had fun watching them. There is a difference between Avi's voice and Matt's. Avi is a basso profundo ( in opera talk...he IS opera trained) and has an extreme low...and you haven't actually heard it yet...he can go much lower, breaking speakers. Matt is a bass singer ( with an incredible falsetto) and has a different timbre and is not quite able to get down to Avi's extreme lows...YET.
Yes, there is some professional editing in the studio version.
There's an old joke about the costuming in this video:
Kirstie: "I'm going all in for the blue and silver...Blue hair, blue make-up and this blue tutu I'll wear around my neck"
Scott: "I'm cos-playing Jack Frost..I'll even whiten my eyebrows as well as my hair!"
Kevin: "Those contacts make my eyes itch, but look at these cool shades I'm gonna use!"
Mitch: "Meh...I'm just gonna wear this old sweater."
Avi: " ....you guys are wearing clothes????"
What to do next: Some more modern ones maybe...like... Be My Eyes (original), Mad World, Come Along, Coffee In Bed.
Edit: I totally forgot...They do have the lyrics on stage monitors...because Scott is terrible at remembering the lyrics of an song. It's a running joke with the group.
Absolutely love your reactions to PTX. Please keep them coming you have a wonderful road ahead with wonderful music. They are actors as well as singers and they feel their songs from the heart.
Mitch's vocals just make these songs feel like complete i can't explain it's amazing 😍
"Holy shit..." This is probably the best reaction I have ever seen for the Daft Punk video!!! This was amazing...watching you discover their unbridled talent was the best!!! Can't wait for you to react to more. For a good dose of Avi's bass, you should react to one of their originals...Love Again.. IT will blow you away!!
I agree. He really reacted, and adding the live there made it even better!
Their “You’re a Mean One, Mr..Grinch” is a great showcase of Matt.
9:23 you put up words that Avi's voice is so smooth like butter, I think his voice is smooth like chocolate, specifically a still warm from the oven brownie, as it's too deep and has too much substance to just be butter.
Much better indeed :)
I bet you thank your wife for making you watch your first PTX song everyday!
If you like the vibe of this one, I would check out their original song 'Love Again', it's very similar in the EDM style which PTX really excels at for an acapella group using no instruments. Another good one is 'Come Along', and if you want more Matt I would check out 'Sound of Silence' or 'You're A Mean One, Mr Grinch', he takes the lead!
A great one to react to with Matt is Sound of Silence! He has a solo in that.
Or Mr Grinch where's he the lead!
Music is eternal, there are so many different people with open minds that show us that our preconceptions are so wrong, in the words of Louis Armstrong "what a wonderful world"
Scott has admitted that he can't remember 1 show where he hasn't forgotten the lyrics or sang at the wrong time. That is why this group is great....they are human !
I love how delighted you are with every new twist of the song. It was great to share this with you. Peace from Ohio …
I love it when reactors do both the studio and live reaction. You may also enjoy their 90’s Dance Medley and the live version from the Hollywood Bowl in 2022. Best wishes from Tennessee 😊🇺🇸
Recommend their cover of Mad World. It has some great Mitch/Matt harmonies.
I was at the Hollywood Bowl for this concert - it was amazing!!!
You would enjoy “ can’t hold us” and “Havana”, “sugar plum Fairy” and “12 days of Christmas”’ and the Emmy they won I. A duet with Solly Parton
😅
Great reaction!! I can't wait for your reaction to Change on the Rise. Avi has the best music and his lyrics are amazing.
And the Sunset Sound live version of "When I'm a Fool". Awesome.
Yes to both please!
Yes please Avi's solo music is fabulous!
Avi's solo music is so good for the soul 🥰💜🤗
Loved your reaction! Can u see why the Grammys had to expand their criteria to include this vocal masterpiece?!
Thanks for reacting to both Pentatonix performances. They are amazing live as well as in the studio.
I saw Pentatonix live in London on 3rd May 2023 and Scott did Faster Better etc with the audience taking turns - great fun. That was only last week so I haven't seen the Tik-Tok yet.
Mitch was only 21 when this was filmed. He has grown up a great deal since then. He has also lived through cancer, which will change how you look, even if growing up,doesn't.
This was their first Grammy!
Mitch has always loved electronic dance music (EDM), and still does. His favorite current group is Autechre, and his recent solo work as "Messer" is EDM. This was the song that introduced me to the group. My daughter (a grad student) sent it to me several years ago, and I remembered it when I was getting depressed during the pandemic lockdown. It lifted my spirits immediately. I've been a Pentaholic ever since. Be sure to do Love Again, their original from the same period. Similar vibe, bigger budget. Re lyrics: it's an ongoing joke that Scott forgets his!
Really fun for live music is Popspring 2016. Consists of 3 originals and Evo. of Michael Jackson.
Scott is very much one of those people who, if you tied his hands, would be mute.
If you haven’t reacted to Avi’s ‘Change on the Rise’ please do it. You won’t regret it. Avi’s solo work is amazing. Love your reaction.
Thanks for the double reaction, glad you loved it!
I hope you’ll look into Avi and his solo music, it’s absolutely fantastic! Change on the rise or I’m only getting started are great ones to start out with but anything by him is honestly great!
Yes please so good!
Agreed 💯
Yes; love me some Avi, please!
Yessssss
WOW that live version was amazing. Practically just as good as the produced official video. Wow. And like you said, I love Mitch's look in the official video. You liked his look in the live one too, but I really really like it in the first one. And I just have an absolute crush on Kevin. OMG...
Bass, bass, bass, Avi, Avi, Avi. 😘 I love basses, but Avi's bass is just soooo warm and low and wellrounded. But I also love his solo career songs. ❤
And yeah, with that talent I'd a have cheeky smile 24/7. 💪🏻😂
This is hands down Avi’s best song. He has never sounded better and what he contributed to this arrangement is unreal.
Scott says he can remember melodies forever but lyrics don’t stay in his head. I don’t know how much the others rely on the prompters, but they are vital for Scott.
Favorite reactor--HANDS DOWN! You are such a joy to watch.
There's also a completely off-mic live recording on a cell phone of a private performance of this song. It's a lot harder to hear the base and beatboxing in that one but you also get less distortion somehow, despite the awful mic on a phone, lol.
I think that their most "pure fun" song ever is their original song "Sing." It's infectious! Gets SO STUCK IN YOUR HEAD it's ridiculous actually. 😂
You can tell they had a blast recording this music video, bet they sat in on each other's recording session throwing goofy looks to get such smiles that you see Avi and Mitch giving the viewer/listener!
You are having way too much fun! I love seeing your joy. I really hope you get around to reacting to Avi's solo music. It is very different mostly because he is singing and not holding down the bass line. His voice is like rich hot chocolate. The resonance and timbre can be felt in your chest. My suggestion is Change on the Rise or When I'm a Fool live from Sunset Sound. Thanks and cheers!
Enjoy this. They always deliver a surprise in their arrangements.
Scott confessed in a recent interview that he can't remember lyrics, that his brain just doesn't work that way. So they set up 7 monitors just for him.
Whatever works right ;)
Great reaction.
And yes, they have lyrics on screen...mainly for Scott who is notorius for forgetting the words.
You should totally react to Avi Kaplan's Change on the rise. You will love all of the bass goodness in that song of his
I bet your wife is smiling!!🤣
Viking Reacts: a couple of fun tidbits. (1) This song was produced for something like $400, and a lot of that was the cost of the contact lenses. They recorded this in an apartment that two of them lived in at the time. They put it out on social media...and won a freaking Grammy! (2) My mother, who is 84 years old and a retired music educator LOVES Pentatonix, but she is always afraid that Kevin is going to swallow his tongue beat boxing. :D
Pentatonix was able to build this in a cave, with a box of scraps! xD
You 're my man! Thanks for mentioning Geordi LaForge ✌🏻
Huge trekkie here ;). I've actually met some actors. Most well known ofc William Shatner!
Yes they have lots of teleprompters as Scott is really bad at remembering lyrics and he totally jokes about it. Lol lol. Great reaction.
They followed up Daft Punk with their original EDM "Love Again" and it's phenomenal! It's worth listening to!
Mitch might be the reincarnation of Freddie Mercury. Freddie died in November 1991 and Mitch was born in July 1992. He can also grow the Freddie mustache. It is so close to matching it is kinda creepy.
I like that Kevin's Goggles actually look like the visor from one of Daft Punk's helmets.
Absolutely. That has to be obvious I guess. But it does remind me of Geordi LaForge as I am a huge Trekkie ;)
they are sensory overload; there is always too much going on at once. i find them good stress relief, especially during the pandemic. an early fun favorite is 'sing', an original.
I will never tire of watching people react to Pentatonix.
It’s a full body workout watching Pentatonix. 😂😂😂😂❤❤
They are all soooo gooood, this was fun to watch. And i don’t mind you going back 😉, great moments needs a going back to listen once more 😀
**THERE ARE LITERALLY NO WORDS IN MY ENGLISH VOCABULARY, THAT CAN DESCRIBE THIS GROUP!!!** ❣ I have also come to the conclusion, that Mitch is an Alien, from the planet of WTF 🙃 😊🙃 I truly love how Pentatonix will put their own spin on a song, yet still manage to keep the integrity & respect the original artist.
Yeah, that song will melt your brain in a good way. Pentatonix always has a nack for doing that with their music.
Consider my brain molten ;)
This wasn't made in a studio. It was made in Avi & Kevin's apartment. And yes they spent $400.00 to make it.
Yes, Avi's replacement is named Matt, and yes, his bass is very warm. His voice makes me think of a warm blanket and a purring cat. And chocolate.
Matt's voice seems to get better every time I hear it. In the earliest releases with Matt it's obvious that he doesn't have as great a range as Avi, which is not surprising. But when I went to their concert on November 20, 2022, in Denver, I was surprised by the second verse of "Hallelujah." It was an arrangement I'd never heard before, apparently designed to take advantage of Matt's full range, and I would swear that his lowest note was as low as anything I ever heard from Avi - true blowing-the-speakers basso profundo low, while his highest note was somewhere in the middle of the tenor range, *higher* than I ever heard from Avi.
That range hasn't yet been revealed in any of their official releases, though I expect it will be shortly, probably in the next album. In their live stream from the Hollywood Bowl from the same tour I attended, "Hallelujah" was the final song of the evening, when all of their voices were tired, and Matt didn't even attempt that low note - in Denver they sang "Hallelujah" early in the evening.
I'm told that bass voices improve with age. Matt is the youngest member of Pentatonix, two years younger than Mitch, and I would not be at all surprised to find his voice getting even better for at least another year or two. I think that when Pentatonix replaced Avi with Matt they traded up; Matt is going to be much better than Avi. He's already spectacular, and still improving. It says something about the musical discernment of Kevin and the trio that they recognized Matt's talent years before his full range became evident, and it says something about Pentatonix as a whole that they've done such a beautiful job of nurturing the talents of each of them.
I would react to one of their originals called Love Again, the drop is off the charts
It is on the list ;). Just a matter of time...
Have you noticed how Mitch curls his tongue, to make different notes. Half way through. Actually when you said this guy!!!!!😮😅😊❤
I did notice that indeed. I think he actually sang on an inhale as well
@@VikingReacts
On the Christmas bells song it’s flipping amazing how long he can sing. Again he has too be circular breathing or he’d be on the deck gasping. Try find it. It’s actually a great song too done extremely well. God Bless Love ❤️🇬🇧🙏❤️😇🇬🇧❤️
I´m normally not the one for writing comments... but can i just say: I just discovered your channel and I simply love your reactions! You´re so full of joy and emotions in general when doing these music reactions. And it all seems completely legit! Please stay this true and kindhhearted person you are, never change and keep putting out content like this!
I came here for the Pentatonix reactions and I´m definitely staying as a subscriber now. :)
Another great reaction. Loved that Geordi La Forge comment. :D
Something one can expect from a huge Trekkie. Check my shirt in “The Prayer” ;). Thanks for the compliment!
@@VikingReacts yeah fellow trekki 🖖
They have the words up on stage because Scott has admitted he is notorious for forgeting lyrics
my goodness, they all look like babies. XD So nice to see a reaction for this song, not a lot of folks are just now hearing it for the first time.
Love, love, love this!!! Really enjoying your reactions!! I'm supposed to be writing... Now I'm distracted. 🤣🤣🤣
You say Daft Punk like [dæft pʌŋk].
I love this one from Pentatonix, always makes me smile and happy, see you reacting the same makes me enjoy it more ! I started to watch your videos last week and I can't stop it. I really like the way you do it, so emotional and warm, I trully love it ! You make me discover quite a lot of music that I am not hearing usually but I add them to my playlist everytime. Now it's kinda "if Viking Reacts like it, I'll do it too". Thank you so much and see you soon !
One of my favorite recent reactions to this song by Pentatonix. Great reaction Viking Reacts!
I find the biggest difference I.hear.between versions is the balance, where you'll have different pieces stand out in the studio vs live. But I would also say that it's largely the nature of the media, where live, you don't have that engineer that goes through it afterwards and pulls certain parts forward or pushes them back in the mix, adds a little reverb, and such.
Sometimes I just want to listen to this again, but I always look for a react to remind myself how it felt to listen to it for the first time.
So happy to have found your channel to watch you enjoy PTX. I was at that live show and you're right, Scott was in the zone. He literally said he was living his best life on stage lol It was a dream for them to perform at the Hollywood Bowl solo. I really enjoyed your double reaction with watching the live version after the official video. it's fun to see the comparison like that. Cheers and can't wait to see more!
Would love to see your wife's reaction to watching you react to this one. Glad you had such fun
Oh she doesn’t nearly have as much of a reaction as I do. With her everything is mostly internal ;)
Great reaction! Thank you!
Don't know if you know this but Kristin had a baby and the live performance you reacted to here was just a few months after she gave birth. They announced the pregnancy in March 2022, baby was born June 28th, and this concert was in October.
I've never watched one of your videos before-instant fan, instant sub! I enjoyed this sooo much!
Awesome! Thank you! Just be aware that it's a lot of metal as well ;)
I don't think I have ever seen anyone have as much fun listening to this song as you did. It was a blast to watch lol. You had the giddiness of a child on Christmas morning. Joy is contagious, than you! I think I heard somewhere that Scott has a hard time remembering lyrics so I'm glad to see he has help, if that is true. As if he doesn't have a million other things to remember lol. I really liked the comparison between live and video. Loved watching your reaction.
i's about the performers having fun is which makes a good performance
I love how much you enjoyed this one. 😊
Avi bass is so good, and his voice in general
I know I’m late to the party, as this video is 7 months old 😊 You mentioned that you wanted to get to know Matt’s voice. If you listen to Pentatonix doing Mr. Grinch, then Matt is the leading vocal in that song, and doing a great job at it 😊 Thank you for a wonderful reaction. It’s lovely to see your authentic excitement 😊
I try to watch your videos while I'm cooking and cleaning. I'm currently smelling my potatoes burning and the vacuum is still in the closet. Lol! My left leg may have fallen asleep too....😂
Good thing I only have 101 videos on my channel! And lucky for most Pentaholics... most are metal ;)
Did it eventually work out though? Cooking? Cleaning?
@@VikingReacts Yes...lol. The potatoes were saved and the cleaning is all done! My poor children were the kids that got driven to school in a station wagon blaring Metallica. My taste in music is pretty broad too. Your channel is a new favorite 🤣
This reaction was so fun! I love the enthusiasm you have during the song right before Avi’s part. Yes sometimes it’s just SO good it brings tears to your eyes. Others have mentioned there is even a super stripped down version of this song shows just how absolutely amazing they are
LOVE YOUR REACTION! This is pretty much how I reacted when I first heard this. Mind blowing talent!
Watch the "Private Performance" to see baby PTX do Daft Punk. For the absolute Matt-n-Kevin show, watch New Rules x Are You That Somebody.
love Mitch, in fact 40+yrs ago i was Mitch, but your reaction to the Avi drop was pure gold.
In my opinion Matt sounds like Nat King Cole. Nat sang Unforgettable. His daughter rerecorded it and put her voice in it after he died and made it a duet. I think Matt and Nat both have really smooth baritone voices.
There is another live version that was recorded in a green room or backstage room. It was recorded on a phone. They were not even singing into mics. That really shows they can really do it and don't cheat.
I know Nat well ;). My vinyl collection had quite a few albums from people like Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, Sinatra and so on. Nat King Cole is among them :). Very smooth voice!
I’ll check a version with Matt soon so I can listen to him with what you said in the back of my mind
@@VikingReacts I would love to hear him do Unforgettable. I think he would kill it.
The audio for this video was recorded in a closet, they used the closet as a sound booth❕❗ The video was shot in someone's kitchen (I forget who's it was)❕❗
If it works it works ;). I've heard it was Avi's place..
Sorry screwed up and hit the wrong button.
My favorite part of your reaction was the little giggle.
Did you know that before this concert, 4 of the 5 members of the group actually worked the ticket box office for 4 hours.
I spoke to someone who was there. They sold tickets, milled around the crowd and sang a few songs.
How any multi platinum selling artists would take the time to do that?
There's an older live performance video of this song that someone took on their cellphone, looked like a private backstage performance. Audio quality wasn't great, but Avi was still in the group at the time, and it's nearly identical to the music video version.
So much fun! You have such great reactions.⭐️
They have you all figured out, too, Sir Goesbackalot…”ONE MORE TIME🎤🎶”😂
