Yes! Or maybe Can you feel the love tonight. Some newer stuff so they don't have to go through the emotional hardship of the bass change, haha. Better to get used to both of them at the same time! And as good as the old stuff is, many newer things get overlooked because people recommend the older classics.

Right. Avi & Kevin shared an apartment in LA early on to save money, and when the studio this was to have been done in fell through at the last minute, they used the closet to record the audio, then their kitchen to film the visual (done by FifGen Films). Just an FYI, they have occasionally used instruments in some of their songs. Notably, Kevin on cello and/or Scott on piano. When they do a video of these songs, the instruments are shown.
Early on they had a long debate over using an actual whistle in a song called "Ref". They did finally go ahead and use a whistle.😁

And with all this there is still much more to learn about what they each do in the group, depending on the song. For instance Avi does overtones, a fabulous trick few can do. Kevin also does other sound effects outside of those typical for a beatboxer, like water drops, a trumpet, & a flugelhorn (similar to a saxophone). Mitch can imitate a violin & also electric guitar. On the guitar it's so close with just his voice alone that you easily recognize what it is meant to be, but when you add reverb with a mic it becomes another moment when you go "I can't believe that's not an instrument!" Want a little soul or blues effect? That's Scott's specialty. Those are just a few examples.

A lot of people will suggest Bohemian Rhapsody and Sound of Silence (and those are excellent suggestions), but for a different dimension on Pentatonix, I would recommend you do Can't Hold Us, a Macklemore cover. @@toni-annmyers3604 I actually prefer the live performance, you can really see who's singing what part - hard to do when the official video cuts back-and-forth so quickly. @@toni-annmyers3604 You are correct, each singer has to control their own pitch and volume in that type of situation. Which just makes it all the more impressive to me, as there's very little difference in the sound quality between the studio version and this live version.

Avi & Kevin were called meat & potatoes 😍. Scōmich started with music theatre at age 9. Kirstie joined them in 9-10th grade. They truly are one voice.
Name a song. 1 of them will sing a couple notes to set the key and the other 2 jump in on harmonies. How do they know who should sing which part if they've never sung it before? 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️❔

Loved the reaction, so few get deep enough to realize what they just watched / heard is deeper that what a casual critique can adequately cover. Suggestions....I believe Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy won them a Grammy as they did an entire vocal presentation of the 100% instrumental in the Nutcracker. Also, Mary Did You Know done in a cave and about 300 million views, The Sounds of Silence, Amazing Grace is the only one that completely turns Kirstie loose (seat belts required), Gold lets you see them all sitting and every movement of each, and then the Prayer defies description. Welcome to the a cappella Wabbit Hole....Oh, one final note is that Mitch, Scott, and Kirstie have been together since either high school or longer. Avi and Kevin were added so they had enough members to compete on the national competition Sing Off which they won. If you look at their first performance on the Sing Off here you get a good run down on their history.

Now that you have seen there two most popular songs and as you've seen with other people's comments they won a Grammy for this song. They even changed the Grammy expectations from an instrumental song to instrumental or a capella song so they could win. The first song I ever saw of them was white winter hymnal and it's not there most popular song but it shows them being even more dexterous than you ever seen any group ever. Now on you two your reactions are probably the most informative of all reactors and I've actually learns more on the group than I ever learned by watching anyone else. So Thank You for that.

On the Sing Off seas 3, they were told: "You guys are from the future to save A Capella" lol

You're asking for what's next, but there is literally nothing bad in their catalog. Roll dice, throw a dart at a list, point blindly at a video, you will not be disappointed. That being said, personal favorites are:
    1. Imagine (moving and emotional, and also their best example of their "Wall of Sound" - you'll know it when you hear it),
    2. Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone (even though I'm not religious at all),
    3. O Come All Ye Faithful (and yes I know it's a Christmas song, but the joy in this performance will make you want to shout "YES, YES, YES!!!" and then play it over and over again).
But seriously, pick a song, any song, and it'll be a winner.

  • @akinpaws
    @akinpaws Před 2 lety +42

The buckling in was a hoot. I'm very glad you decided to find the off-mic performance. Gold, The Prayer, and Kevin's one-man-band performance of Down are the top 3 I'd like to see you do next.
EDIT: Actually, since you loved the EDM _and_ had questions about how Kevin & Avi _did_ that, here's my top recommendation; Watch the official video for their original song Love Again, then this interview czcams.com/video/bC9TicW0iiY/video.html in which they demonstrate a few techniques, then perform Love Again live.
I would say 98% of PTX songs are 100% a capella, and 2% have an instrument or two. You'll see them in the video if they're there.

What a great reaction! Mitch really enjoys EDM. He has released solo work under the name of Messer that has an EDM flare. Although he also raps, plays the piano, and has exceptional pitch accuracy. And Kevin is a savant. Seriously. Besides being a singer, beatboxer, and cellist, he also speaks Mandarin fluently, has perfect pitch, has played saxophone at Carnige Hall, and was actually pre med at Yale.

You want to have your minds blown, try their cover of "Gold" by Kiiara. Their vocal dexterity is so incredible that they can do naturally what took Kiirara technology to accomplish. There's Mitch slaps, but that and his iconic lead performance of "Aha!" by Imogen Heap at the Star Vista in Singapore (there's a video, find it) are downright Mich face punches.

This is my favorite Pentatonix song! At some point, please check out more on Avi. He has a new album coming out soon, but there are two of his previously released songs that are "must hears". One is called "Change on the Rise" and the other is titled "Otherside". They are a completely different sound than Pentatonix, as they line up more with Avi's folksy background! With that said, one of the most impressive things he does is he can sing overtones. That means he can sing two notes at once! One is deeper note while the other is a Mariah Carey-like whistle tone! You can find live videos on CZcams of him singing "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" with overtones! Anyways, thanks for always doing these reactions the right way. I always love the care and time you put into each one instead of rushing to get them over with. I really appreciate that! Take care & God bless!

Love ur reactions! It’s so fun for us Pentaholics to discover people discovering their magic. Yes, it is a gift + A LOT OF HARD WORK. They really grind, especially knowing what happened after they won the Sing Off but then got dropped by Sony (part of winning was to get a record contract). They put in thousands of hours of practice and posted to CZcams, that era is affectionately known as the “couch years” because they were mostly sitting on a couch with the “meat & potatoes” (Avi & Kevin) on the floor in front all around one mic 😎
