Installing Hayward skimmer, the best upgrade possible, Coleman Intex Best Way pool,

  • The pump/filter your pool came with is just barely up to the job of keeping the water clean. Adding a Hayward skimmer improved the pump operation and pool water clarity.
    I tried the intex clamp on skimmer first, it actually made the pool pump work harder and reduced the flow of water. The Hayward skimmer increased the flow of water and reduced the load on the pump.
    the second unit on my plumbing is a salt cell, my pool has a low concentration of salt in it. the salt cell generates chlorine to treat the water.
    those of you needing to find the adapter from the threads on the PVC to the Intex hoses, search the web for "40mm to 1 1/2 Inch Conversion Kit (For Intex and Bestway Pools)"
    I found mine on Amazon, and it's also sold on Ebay, pool supply sites are a good source as well. however, due to covid, everyone is buying pools and they're getting hard to find.

    just sending out a big thank you for your video.Followed your advice to keep my coleman input by drilling out for the eye from the hayward kit. huge difference in water flow.also hard plumbed my skimmer getting rid of the hoses to the intake ports and putting in a shutoff valve for the skimmer as you recommended. Have been bummed by everyone being out of lower priced sand filters but with the new skimmer setup i know i can keep my pool in great shape for quite a while. for people who want to hard plumb their skimmer to their original coleman type pump,you don't need any expensive adapers.The skimmer side takes regular 1 1/2 pvc pipe and the pump side can be made to work fine with a cantex electrical 1 1/2 inch box connector. I got mine at ace hardware for $1.99.It's a little scary when you cut the hose to get the hose screw on end part, but the cantex part fits perfectly into the part and works great.I sanded the lettering off as recommended by another you tuber and also left a little gap when i glued on my white pvc 1 1/2 coupling so you can still turn the screw on intex part without it turning your pvc as recommended by another you tuber.Anyway brilliant hack of the eyeball fitting and intensely grateful for your help. One tip for folks getting ready to install the skimmer. I took one of the extra pan head screws they give you and the night before i installed the skimmer I threaded the screw into all the holes i needed to use to attach the skimmer to the side of the pool. That way when I actually attached the skimmer it was easy to screw in the screws since the extra screw had already put threads in the plastc screw holes of the skimmer which do not come threaded. I only threaded the screw in about 2/3 of the way in so the screw would get a good bite into the skimmer holes when iactually put it together.

    You don't split the gasket!!!! It's made like so when you cut the liner the gasket, onside is on the outside and the other side goes on the inside of the pool. Then you screw the frame and the skinner box together. The gasket makes a water tight seal.

      Goood observation!
      The skimmer butterfly gasket is made for a metal wall pool. The butterfly gasket goes over the metal wall and liner to prevent water from rusting the metal wall.
      Splitting the gasket in this instance is acceptable, otherwise you need to cut the skimmer hole bigger to fit t butterfly gasket. It would be difficult to cut accurately.
      I usually buy the old style s piece gasket to do this. This is done so you have a guide to cut the hole in the liner, as it’s not made for a soft side pool.
      The problem with installing in an Intex (or Bestway) pool is you have is you have to lower the water significantly, therefore I covered my skimmer hole and went back to the Intex style skimmer. 😊

    I did this modification this weekend. Man, every time I poked a hole through the liner for the screws I was nervous, but I finished up without a hitch and the water is flowing and filtering much better. My wife and I are going to go through the vacuum process tonight. The only thing I bought extra was a valve to put at the stock pump and a hose to go from that valve to the skimmer.

    Did this to my pool last year along with a 3,000 gph sand filter pump. Best money ever spent on a pool.

  • @bloodstormzcrimsonskyz623

    i installed 2 skimmers one of these for skimming / circulation, another wide mouth jacuzzi style skimmer up near the top of the pool above the waterline for Rain overflow Drainage, this eliminated the very costly need to build a French drain around the pool. if we get a heavy extended rain it drains out into a 1" pipe off into a storm drain creek. I also installed a shower drain into the bottom of the pool and created a sump area in the middle, this is also connected to the drain line with a 1" directional flow control valve.

I upgraded my pump several months ago because of it really not working at all!

      The two holes in the side of the pool that used to be for the suction side are now like jets for the pump outlet and the old large hole that was the eerie. Into the pool is gone and the skimmer is cut in there. This is how I did mine. Works much better that before.
      I actually tried to set mine up when I got it that way but it wouldn’t work so I got the box skimmer then it did.

    What did you do with the other 2 intakes though? Could them 2 intakes and the skimmer hose somehow connect before running to the pump so that all 3 intakes are being used now? I like the idea of using the original intakes still to help suck up particles floating beneath the water.

    • @rowerwet
      @rowerwet  Před 2 lety

      Could use them, but it would diminish the flow into the skimmer, which captures the most litter

      I lost maybe an inch or two, if I was to do it again, I would mount the skimmer so the top screws would be through the doubled section at the top, to lose less depth.
      It really doesn't matter though since my kids favorite thing is to get a whirlpool going in the pool by running in circles. This slops out enough water that I'm never overflowing the skimmer unless it rains a lot

    Thank you for a great video.
    Many professionals advise against doing this, so I am inquisitive about the durability.
    Can you give an update on how it is holding up after sitting there for two years?
    Can the liner withstand heavy activity and many waves?

    • @rowerwet
      @rowerwet  Před rokem

      Haven't put it back up yet this year due to spring being cold and rainy, still.
      I see no reason to believe the pool will have any issues with the skimmer going back on it this year (if we ever get summer weather). If anything, I expect one of the windows to fail as they're crazed and yellowed from sun exposure.
      My kids are rough on the pool, jumping off the deck, and getting it going around so fast you can't swim against it.

    For best results you need to re-circulate all the water of the pool 4 times/day in active season. So pool 10000L , you need 2500l/h pump if you want it to work 4 hours, and so. So these pump are bare minimum or really not adequate for these pools and larger pumps do much better job.

      It's common PVC plumbing, take your skimmer housing to the hardware store and find the PVC pipe parts that will add this. The skimmer is also made of PVC.

      I find I lost about 2 inches at the most. One commenter said they set the top of the skimmer gasket into the double section where the top fold is attached.

    • @rowerwet
      @rowerwet  Před 4 lety

      The return port cover unscrews, I used a hole saw to remove the middle, and installed the eyeball in the hole.
      If you have smaller ports in the pool, they give you gaskets in the assembly to cut a larger hole in the pool and seal it. You could also run PVC pipe through the smaller port and put the eyeball on the PVC, it won't flow as much water then though.
