  • This was a super fun project and took us a lot less time than we planned! I will be doing a Q&A to follow this video up so if you have any questions put them below!
    Huge thank you to everyone that helped, I couldn't of done it without you all!

    This is the job I am currently undertaking but on my own, with family power to pull the big stuff around and with a scissor lift as I like a challenge lol. I am cleaning, painting and or replacing everything I touch and also painted the Richards galvanised chassis with corroless paint and internally sprayed with dinatrol and waxoil. Just waiting for my new engine mounts and stuff to allow the engine and transmission to be swapped over and then I will be reuniting the chassis with the body and hopefully completing this within the next 4-6 weeks around my full time job a staycation and a mates wedding! Great video guys👍my pictures are below in the link. If others are planning it I sprayed everything with plus gas weeks in advance and didn't really have many issues with stuck bolts apart from 1 front radius arm bolt and the 2 front body mounts just above the crush cans. I am replacing all the body mounts and bolts too. Things that I wasn't aware of with the chassis is that there is a bracket that holds the pipes for the rear fuel tank above the tank this needs to be swapped over but the holes aren't drilled so you need to put threaded inserts in for that. Also the brake pipe brackets that fix on the chassis don't come with it and need to be replaced if you can get them! Apart from that the chassis is excellent and the only one I would consider using as it's a big job and I have heard many horror stories from other chassis suppliers new to this game! It is expensive but it is worth the extra for the peace of mind.

    You guys made short work of that, impressive!
    Just a quick question; did you debate treating or spraying the chassis before fitting? Was watching Land Rover Sophie's restoration and she put a lot of time into the prep. I'm now wondering if that's necessary, or if there's certain cases for it.

    • @simon-mouse8739
      @simon-mouse8739 Před 3 lety

      I treated mine and sprayed it and also filled it with dinatrol and waxoil. Overkill but I know it's done and do will any future owner like my son 😁

    Everytime I see a video on a European Disco and I wish we got the Diesel versions instead of the troublesome v8. The oilburner Discovery might have saved Land Rover's reputation rather than sink it like the V8 did.

    What chassis did you use? I’m thinking of biting the bullet in the next year. We have fitted a few different defender chassis at work with varying difficulty, some that just didn’t fit and some that you had to re-drill holes (ruining the galv). Great job too btw

    • @thunderousity
      @thunderousity Před 3 lety +1

      I agree it would be good to know what chassis you used, any issues to be aware of and what you recommend being done whilst the chassis is being done such as the clutch.

    • @landychap
      @landychap  Před 3 lety +4

      @@thunderousity Thanks guys. It's a Richard's Chassis (The only one worth considering!) - Shielder Chassis are absolutely terrible so don't even bother. The only holes we had to drill were ones which got covered during the galv process. We just sprayed some galv primer over these to try prevent rusting. We also sprayed this over where we stamped the chassis incase we punched through a little.
      I got a lot done whilst it was all apart:
      - Fuel Tank Pipes (A must! Such a crap job with body on).
      - All body mounts, bolts & washers. (Standard ones, mostly all genuine).
      - Clutch & Flywheel.
      - Rear Main Seal.
      - All Filters.
      - Breather System to single manifold under the bonnet.
      - Intermediate Seals.
      - All gearbox & Engine mounts.
      - Radius Arm Bushes. (If Needed)
      - Trailing Arm Bushes. (If Needed)
      - Watts Linkage. (If Needed)
      - ARB 'D' Bushes (If Needed)
      - Bump Stops. (If Needed)
      Hope this helps!
      PS - Buy new bolts for everything you have to remove in case you gotta cut them off, so much quicker!!!

      A proper galv chassis won’t rust for years. Couldn’t afford it at the time, if it starts to rust in the future I’ll have it treated. Thanks!

    I have the US model is it worth it. I do have a factory motor i modded to not have the cylinder sleeves slip. New heavy duty hesdgaskrt custom made. Oil cooler. Heavy duty coils and wires yeah still in original location I opted to not relocate. Now for the tired stuff I did compete suspension in 2012 now 10 years old solid still surface rust but due to an illness I was unable to keep up with chassis rust prevention which was perfect til 2018 and wasn't done since so she's getting wrecked quick with new england salt and dirt driveway. Its the rear 1/4 but I had heard about galvanized aluminum which I only used for fish tanks that I built. If aluminum is used whats the strength and flexibility for collision improvement compared to the stiff factory one? And whats the current cost ballpark to put one on?
