  • This video details how to disassemble and rebuild a vintage 1959 Johnson QD-20 10 Hp Outboard Carburetor.
    This video is also helpful to those interested in rebuilding 1950's or 1960's 18 horsepower FD series carbs or 1970's 15 horsepower carburetors.
    Essentially all 50's, 60's and 70's Johnson / Evinrude carburetors are rebuilt like the one shown in this video therefore I have provided easy links to the respected rebuild kits on Amazon. At the very bottom is a link describing in detail how to tune, set, or adjust your newly rebuilt vintage Johnson / Evinrude carburetor.

    Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. They are priceless. I’ve been working on motors my whole life and I always pick something up free m watching someone else. I haven’t been inside a motor for a few years and I just got a mint FD-11K and I have been monkeying with the carb and forgot all about the damn float being level to the body lmao. Who says ya can’t teach an old dog new old tricks. Lolol. Dammmmmmit man. I’ve had that pig apart five times like I gotta have a piece of trash in a Venturi lol. Nope damn float wasn’t set. Set that sucker and she sat dead flat still at an idle. Had the screws set perfect. Lol. She is just the nicest motor one could find. I bet it doesn’t have ten hours in it. I ripped the whole thing apart and every single screw came right out not a drop of corrosion on any screw like it was built last week. You don’t get em like this one often. I was told there were only 22000 made with the K after the 11 and that that was to signify that it was a 571/2. Something is different in the build than the first half of the year. Any idea what’s different ?? I can’t see anything that stands out from my other. ??!!!! Tia for any help.

    Pretty good video. One thing I would recommend is using those Stanley screw drivers as chisels and such and to invest in a good set of hollow ground screw drivers, you won't be disappointed in the investment.

      He doesn't know what he is doing almost all the info in this video is WRONG! even the initial adjustments are way off if you follow his instruction the motor will not run anywhere near as intended Buy an OMC Evinrude Johnson manual I recommend Seloc 1956-1970 Evinrude Johnson tune up and repair 1.5 to 40 hp

    Is there any differences in dimensions on the high and low speed adjustment pins?

    • @daleburnett8431
      @daleburnett8431 Před 2 lety

      Yes the upper which is low speed comes to a point more like a needle vs the lower which is more of a blunt end once you have both out or in hand and they both have the same threads so don't mix em up

    • @kennethhamby7665
      @kennethhamby7665 Před 2 lety

      @@daleburnett8431 the reason for asking is, the low speed pin was lost before I bought the engine, and was trying to get a figure on having one machined out

  • @Reidball100
    @Reidball100 Před 5 lety +1

    The carb kit referenced comes with more pieces than you need, correct? Looks like a lot of extra washers, seals, gaskets depending on the exact year. Is that correct? I have a 1955 QD-16 10 HP, and just bought this kit from Amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07F73M7MS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01__o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Looks like a lot I don't need given the replacement parts you noted here. Thanks for any feedback you can provide!

    • @thisoldoutboard
      @thisoldoutboard  Před 5 lety

      Yes the kits can have extra parts. The kits are for a range of years and models. They are cheaper to sell that way, that’s why.

  • @nobodyspecialdotorgrichard5971

    Very helpful video! When you screwed in the long needle(the low idle adjustment) you didn't show the little thing inside there that the needle actually screws into(it doesnt just screw into the body of the carb!) On my 1958 evinrude18hp, it comes out when I pull the needle out! It is just a cylindrical tube with threads inside it that seats in there and the needle screws into. I shove it back in and then screw the brass piece in and then I screw the needle in but, I am completely confused by these three parts and how far to screw it into the piece. mine wont stay running so, I was hoping to see what you did with this piece.

  • @dennisfalan1623
    @dennisfalan1623 Před 5 lety +1

    You don't know what you're doing That is not how you adjust the float and you didn't even use the packing washers. The jet needles are going to need adjusted all the time and your initial jet needle adjustments are wrong also The low speed should be backed out 1 1/2 turns then adjusted while at the slowest idle you can get and keep running the high speed initial adjustment is 3/4 turn out read the manual before you do a video it's not just take a guess at it and make a video
