  • I think you will get a good idea how to work on OMC ignition from 1950 to 1973. I know I repeat a lot and videos are a little long, so I had to break each segment into 10 min. I am not that good a videoing or editing, sorry!!
Some of these videos display the use of specialty outboard tools
Richards Outboard tools (Franks' Tools has been bought out by Richards Outboards tools)
If you would like to inquire about purchasing very reasonably priced vintage outboard tools for your 1950's, 60's and 70's OMC (Evinrude, Gale, Johnson) outboard, please use the follow email address or link to Richard's site.

or go to RICHARD'S OUTBOARD TOOLS website.

Cheers, hope y'all have fun working on old outboards!!!

Thanks for the help, could not find a video anywhere to steer me in the right direction for taking off the magneto. Simple but I didn't want to start taking off screws aimlessly.

Awesome video ! I just happen to be working on the identical motor and have a feeling I have a bad coil but thanks to your great explaination of this I will work myself through it step by step and hopefully when I'm done it will all be good.
Best explaination so far that I've seen on Magneto ignitions for OMC.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you !
P.S. Would have loved to see how you got the flywheel off ;-)

You are very welcome. I hope it helps. I put a lot of detailed explanation and step by step instructions to help someone who had little or no experience with these outboards. So, it is a bit long...lol
I will soon try to put a video or removing the flywheel.( maybe in a week or two)
      Good luck.

iam not getting spark from my bottom wire, I changed the condenser, coil, what, else could cause no spark,, only thing I have left is to change the wire ,gimmie you opinion, its a 1955 5.5 Johnson all I need is that spark

Thanks for the video. I have seen a couple of these with an analog ohmmeter and that seems like the most precise way to do it. Could you give me some ideas on a problem I have with a 1965 18hp Johnson (FD-19) that has been sitting in a barn for 20 years. I have replaced the water pump, installled new rope in recoil housing, rebuilt the carburetor, replaced fuel pump, replaced the kill switch. (I determined that kill switch was bad and that is why it was not getting spark. I could not get it to pop over with starting fluid even though it was getting spart, so I thought maybe the spark is too weak, and would assume after sitting for 20 years (it ran when he parked it) that the condensors/coils had degraded. I replaced coils, points and condensors with new ones (sierra brand), and adjusted the points the simple way to .020. (I will do it the perfect way once I get it running). No spark on either coil. I did not replace the spark plug wires. The old coils have smooth probes that stick into the wire, whereas the new sierra ones have screws that I screwed into the wire. (both are horrible designs I thought). The only thing I can think is that there is not good contact between coil and wire core. Any ideas for me? I did verify that I had the key in the new kill switch to complete the circuit, and verified it had spark immediately before I took it apart. The motor is really clean and compression is 90 and 87 on the different cylinders....I would love to get it running again.

Hey Cajun cook thanks for the vidoe. It has been very helpful!! Where did you get the tool to align the coils? I would love to contact him and get one for myself. Thanks again.

    • @cbrown596
      @cbrown596 Před 7 lety

It's been a few months but I figured I'd answer the question. You need to use a harmonic balancer puller. When you take the cover off you'll see a little wheel with three bolts going into it and a large bolt in the middle. Run the puller tool into the three bolt holes and pop it off.

Is the magneto universal from 3 hp to 40 hp on OMC motors from 195x (?) to 1973? We have a 1954 Evinrude 15 that has runs on one cylinder and the coils are fine. The magneto plate has a lot of play in it and I was wondering if another magneto plate can replace it from another 15/18.

When you say play or you referring to the points cam. If the flywheel key is damaged or the points cam is key way slot is damage, or the crankshaft key is damaged then that can cause play and mess up timing.
It would be easier to assist you if we were on a forum and you could post pictures. Please let me make a recommendation. I am a member of the AOMCI (Antique Outboard Motor Club Inc). The site has an ask a member section that is free to the public and would be much easier to help you out. Also there are a lot of guys (members) that are outboard mechanics from back in the day. They enjoy helping people just like you to make these old beauties run again. I have been a member there 8 years.

+cajuncookone Thanks a lot! It's great to have such knowledgeable people that are willing to help online.
I'm only going on what my dad said - he said the fifteen was running on one cylinder and that there was play in the stator (magneto) plate which caused timing to be off. It hasn't run since 1985 - the year after he bought a Mercury 9.9 because there weren't any OMC dealers close by.

I'd have to get the flywheel off first - is what what you need to see? Also, can that motor be run on 40:1 with synthetic BRP or synthetic Quicksilver oil? I have heard that OMC motors from the 1950s that have roller bearings can run a mixture between 24:1 to 40:1.

is this the same way you would do a 1983 Johnson 140 v4 sea horse motor .

    • @cajuncookone
      @cajuncookone  Před 5 lety

James, the simple answer is no. The motor you have contains an ignition system that uses powerpack (that replaces the points and condensers). The video you are looking at is a universal magneto system that was used by motors from the 1950 to 1970's. OMC started using the solid state ignition system in mid 1970's for the higher power motor 55hp and higher. Within a 5 to 6 years period all motors had the solid state ignition system except for the lower hp motors like 4hp and lower. They eventually fixed all motor with solid state ignition.
I don't know your model of motor, but here are links to an online parts dealer with parts diagrams and part numbers.
      www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1983&hp=140
      www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1983&hp=140&model=E140MLCTE
      www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1983&hp=140&model=E140MLCTE&manufacturer=Evinrude§ion=Ignition+System
With the solid state ignition system you either have to replace an external coil, power pack or look for an electric short. Also the sensor under the flywheel may need to be replaced. These are what if's, so you will have to do some investigating.
Your motor should have a kill switch near the console or shift. If you do not have spark on all four cylinders, then you need to trouble shoot. Start with the cheapest.
      - kill switch. If the little clip is not connected to the switch or the switch is bad then you will not get any spark on any cylinder.
      - check your external ignition coils to see if they are still good.
      - Power pack
      - sensor coil under the flywheel.
I am not outboard mechanic, but a involved hobbyist that deals with outboard motors from the 1930 to 1970's. I have some knowledge base with solid state ignition system. I own at 1984 Evinrude 15hp that has solid state ignition, but no larger motors such at 40hp or greater.
Your best bet is to go to Iboats.com to get guidance to rule spark issues, because it can get expensive just swapping out parts.

Sorry, I could not been more help. A good Seloc Manual for your motor might help you along as well.

X3 ECH flywheel puller you can get them anywhere. You just put it in with the correct screws and you tighten it till it pops up. There should be plenty of videos on how to do it.
