    Ken Hitchcock.... NHL coach for the last 16 years, he played minor hockey until he was 17 and quit because he wasn't that good. He's lead, coached, mentored and taught pro players for the last 16 years. My goal is to challenge, motivate and teach. Plus... I'd say I'm at least an ABOVE average beer leaguer, haha

    Can you do a video on shooting while you are skating towards the net? When I'm going full speed I only get off a weak shot and fall flat on my face. Even when I try slowing down, my shot is still really weak compared to when I'm standing still.

    Gotcha, I thought you meant flexing the stick to improve accuracy. I didn't mention it in this video because this one is all about accuracy. My last video was about generating more power in your shot and I talk about using weight transfer, stick flex, and proper technique.

    Thats the point, using the flex for more power and dont forget the accuracy aswell. I try it but its really hard for me to use the whip of the stick on wrist shots because i didn't learn it in past.

    You're right, I've been faking it all a long. I've been using a body double in all videos that involve me skating. Also sorry only 2 out of 5 shots top right were bar-down and only 3 out of 4 were 1 inch inside the left post. I'll work on that, I'm so dusty.

    I flex the stick for power, but how does it relate to accuracy? i suppose a whippier stick vs a stiff stick would have some effect but you would have to adjust your shooting style to accommodate. Share your tip

    If you're shooting from the blue line, 2 key points: Get the shot on net, and shoot the puck low. A Goalie can only stop a low shot with his pads or stick which equals big fat rebounds. Shoot high and the goalie catches it in glove, cradles it to his chest, or blockers it over the glass or into the corner. Shoot low and your team will get a big fat juicy rebound every time. The more you know.

  • @howtohockeytraining

    Very good point, but you have to learn to walk before you run. Once people get a grasp for the fundamentals then I start them with the more advanced stuff like shooting off one foot, shooting in stride, etc. I do cover it in my channel though.

    Hello
    I just started growing a great interest in hockey. And it´s kind of bad that it´s a little too late now when I´m 18. I´ve never played serious hockey in my life. I think I´m a pretty good skater. I mean backwards crossovers and such easy,basic stuff by a pretty good skater. My hockey shots however is kinda bad. But i guess if I train like 2 hours everyday in 1 or some years it´ll get better.
    What do you think my chances are to play hockey? Not like NHL but some low league teams?

      @michaelfeehan2876 Před 10 lety +1

      If you want stronger writs try using weighted pucks or a weighted stick. you can add weight to your stick by taping 2-4 pucks on your stick.

    Anybody notice that there is so much trash talking on non aaa/pro/nhl videos in recent years? There are a finite number of NHL teams and a finite number of spots available for players. It's really weird but I seem to shoot a lot better and a lot more accurately when on the move. When I'm stationary I barely get any elevation on the puck and a lot less power on the shot. Not sure if that's a bad thing and I have no idea why this is so. Any ideas?

    @MrDarook1991 Před 9 lety

    So I am pretty new to the game. When I take wrist shots, the puck doesn't fly true, like a saucer, but tumbles in the air. Any idea what I am doing wrong or how to get that nice flight on the shots?
    just thinking out loud, would too much rolling of the wrist cause this tumbling?

    • @standinonstilts
      @standinonstilts Před 9 lety +2

      Try to have the feeling that your are rolling the puck from your heel to your toe as you shoot. To practice just take a puck put it on your heel and just gently role the puck to your toe by pulling your stick towards you. You should feel the puck rotating along your stick. When your shooting this is the feeling you want to get. Most likely you are doing more of a flicking motion rather than a rotation with your body. Use your body to generate the power, rotating into your shot and releasing. This will help you get a stronger shot and give the puck a nice saucer.

  • @nightfly016
    @nightfly016 Před 10 lety +1

    One other reason to fire those low shots hard - a slower shot isn't just easier for the goalie to stop, it's easier for the defense to pick off before it reaches the net. The last thing you want to do is just turn over the puck and start the other team's breakout.

    • @cerrem1
      @cerrem1 Před 9 lety +6

      I would add that another reason to shot low when there is lots of traffic in front of the net is to avoid serious injury of another palyer.... I believe in playing hard and hitting hard and clean, but serioulsy injuring another player with a slap shot is not cool and something you really don't won't on your concious .....

    this is all good advice. but generally speaking unless you open up to receive the pass in the position he is in to take a wrist shot or one timer, most often you are much better off taking a quick wrist/snapshot off one foot without losing your stride. almost all of the best goal scorers do this. iginla, sakic, kessel, ovie and so on.

    You know why your first one from the blue line goes faster and is more accurate than the shots that follow it?
    Answer: Watch your legs. On the first one from the blue line, you shift your weight from back leg to front leg very nicely, and you get your feet pointing the direction they should be pointing, which is forward. Then, you don't do it as well on the other shots. In fact, I noticed this in your other shots too. If you became more consistent with this, you'd have quite a good shot all the time.
    Also, if you know when to drop your shoulder, then you should try to exaggerate a bit more.
    I think if you do these things, you could get close to having NHL power. And I don't say that lightly. I'm not saying you'll be good enough to play in the NHL. I'm only saying that you COULD probably get CLOSE to having average NHL shot power, if you did these things I'm saying.

Besides - i could care less if you played house league or NHL, or if every shot hits bardown or misses the net. Wether or not your personal shot is perfect your tips are valid, correct, apply to everyone, and work.

      Tinyturtle1 i literally started last year and this year is my last year in bantam and im horrible yet i was considered to be the MVP because of my determination and probably because i had 0 minutes in the penalty box, i didnt deserve the MVP status, i went to two power skating lessons and now i think that my skating is my best asset. my shot is weak but kinda accurate if i shoot a snapshot (if i shoot with a slapper or a wrist shot it always goes to the side or it stays on the ice xD) anyways im practicing a lot everyday on my shot and i dont have access to an arena in the summer for stick handling and such so all i do is shoot with all that i can. basically the moral of the story is practice practice and practice. i started way too late so i doubt it ill make it to the pros but your only in peewee so im pretty sure you have a chance
