In this video I build an Arts and Crafts fireplace mantel. This is my second fireplace mantel video and I thought it was different enough from my last one, that it would be neat to have the two similar projects yet two totally different outcomes. I start by selecting the best looking materials for the front of the legs and move on to building the structure. I use a biscuit joiner for the joinery tasks, and I spend a good amount of time show how I build the various details that give this fireplace mantel an Arts and Crafts feel. I finish the video by showing in detail how I fit and attach the mantel to the existing fireplace. I hope you are at least moderately entertained and better yet, pick up a couple useful tips.

As the owner of this house I can say that we absolutely LOVE our new fireplace and couldn't say enough about Mike's work and his professionalism. Also, Mike, that would not have been the first F-bomb dropped in our bungalow. Not even close. Your work is outstanding and it's so cool to be able to see the whole process on here. Thanks!
Thank you very much Gina. It's great to have a homeowner comment on a video.
Gina your house is beautiful! I love arts and crafts homes, I'd love it if you would take us all on virtual yt tours of all the restorations and additions to your house if you would be interested in that!
I know this was a while ago and a long shot, but I'd love to know where you got the tile! Thanks
I love your dialog! Just a touch of (sarcastic) narcissism. That is a fun build. I really appreciate your attention to detail! Nice outcome. And it's great to see your kids involved. Pass on that skill/trade.
Glad you enjoyed it!
The build is gorgeous, but the design itself is outstanding. You captured the essence of the period, yet it is original and distinctive.
Thank you very much.
i can see you are a strong supporter of the motto
"the more construction adhesive the better"
rip already for the dude who might disassemble that mantle piece in the future (hopefully not too near future)
Ha! I don't want it falling off.
Your comment, I enjoyed doing this project. I can say I enjoyed watching this and all of your work. As a fine woodworker myself this Arts and Craft project is right down my alley. Thanks
Thank you Ronald. Arts and Crafts is a timeless design language, it works for furniture, built-ins and millwork. The comment was heart felt, I had a great time building this project.
If you walked into that house and didn't know the mantel was new, you could easily leave none the wiser. Outstanding!
That is a very good compliment, thank you.
I helped a friend (with my truck) pick up 2 tons of white oak he had milled. In return, he gave me a dozen 6/4 x 20" x 10' boards...some are quartersawn and have the rays as you pointed out. Having also lived in Colorado, I know the "dry" reference...many a bloody nose till I learned a few trick (humidifier and some chapstick up the nose!).
I would love to find a guy who saws lumber and has some really nice stuff. Agreed it sure is dry here.
Another great project shared with us. Your recovery from the f***up at installation was epic. I normally wait until the glue has set.
Thanks 👍
enjoy your projects and voice overs. Great way to showcase your craftmanship
Thanks Rick.
The window trim in their home is lovely - all you need. I used to have an apartment in San Diego built in 1923, and it was so hard to leave the beautiful architecture behind when I moved.
I agree, nice detail for sure.
When I was a carpenter in Georgia we called it Tiger Oak. I doesn’t matter what anyone calls it that’s just what we did. Such beautiful wood. Great job. Thanks for sharing
Thank you.
Harbor freight clamps! That was the best part.
They work well enough.
Yes that biscuit joiner is useful I love mine
Thank you. Its the most used tool in my shop.
The new camera is seriously nice.
Thank you.
Mike! Just wanted to drop a note of encouragement and love for all of your videos. You are blessed with a gift, and I appreciate you sharing it with the the CZcams community. Thanks!
Wow, thank you very much.
I’ve been watching mike for years I don’t know why or how but his videos extinguish my wood shop anxieties.
Thank you. That is a really great thing to hear.
That is absolutely awesome. A lot of great craftsmanship went into that. I'm a huge fan of quarter sawn white oak with michaels cherry stain. I have it throughout my house. Also, great job matching the arts and crafts style. I wish that style would become a trend again.
Thanks Spencer. I'm with you. I would love to build more of this style of project.
It's so satisfying to see your attention to detail combined with the owners' attention to the house's Arts and Crafts era. Bravo!
Thank you. Always great to work with a good customer, that was certainly this job.
I appreciate your dry sense of humor and the flawless delivery. I got a good laugh on your fix.
Thank you very much.
@@MikeFarrington 'Zazzy'... I had to smile.
The Mantel looks great!
Thank you.
I’m not building a mantle. I may never. No matter, I HAVE to watch because, it’s Mike Farrington and I know I’m going to learn a lot and be entertained as well. Well done Shop Apprentice! Thanks for your awesomeness Mike.
Thank you very much.
Very sharp looking mantel.
Nice work 👍🏼
Thank you! Cheers!
Well done and so much thought is gone into every build as you can see.
Thank you very much.
A cool period highlight to that room, Mike.
Thanks Phil.
Great work, Mike. I enjoy the craftsmanship
Thanks 👍
Hey Mike, love the mantel! I have been a cabinet and furniture builder for 40 years, and love to see other builders work and tricks. Also love your sense of humor. You remind me of me and my buddies. Keep up the great work.
Thank you. Coming from a fellow pro that really means a lot.
Alex Trebek - The answer is "Zazzle".
Mike - What does every project need?
Ha! Totally.
I already ate lunch, but still made room for all them biscuits.
What a beaut!
Ha! Thank you.
Mike for the Win!
Thanks John.
As always, FANTASTIC work.
Thank you.
Every time I see your video I get closer to you using a biscuit joiner more and more.
Thank you. For this type of project, its a good tool.
I’m glad to see no Dominos were hurt in the filming. Although the Lammelo is a bit decorous!
Great job! Thanks.
Ha! Good point. Thank you.
now there are only a few left to make beautiful videos and without advertisements, just so you can admire your mastery
Thank you.
That mantel just makes the fireplace, and by extension the room. The shop apprentice is the cutest thing ever.
Thank you!
Watching your videos is like watching bob ross paint little trees but with more subtle humor. love the mantle and I am enjoying my recently purchased sanding disc!
Thank you. I grew up watching Bob Ross. Great to hear you like the disc.
I realize it is completely up to the customer but I really like that gap between the tiles and the legs. It is small so it looks like an intentional detail and gives a neat negative space highlight between the fireplace tile and the uprights.
Interesting take, I hadn't even give that a thought as a potential option. Thank you.
Mike, another fantastic project and video. My one comment would be to consider for a future build, maybe pyramid those little applied squares and install them in a diamond configuration?? It would go very nicely with the ends of the stocking rod.
Thank you. I think that's a good idea.
A fine carpenter and a notable comedian! Great combo for highly entertaining videos!
Thank you Michael.
You do beautiful work Mike. Well done.
Thank you.
As a wood turner in New Mexico, I totally understand cracking wood at altitude!
Beautiful work!
New Mexico is a beautiful place, but yes, a dry climate can create problems with wood.
looks very simple but very elegant. great design cool video
Thank you Jim.
Excellent craftsmanship.
Thank you.
As a retired cabinetmaker I deem it nice. Followed you for a while and like your work. Also you are reasonably entertaining 😎
Thank you.
You do great work! Always a must watch!
I appreciate that!
You’re a great dad and a master craftsman!
Thank you.
Ooooo video transitions, nice....
Thank you. I picked up some new editing software.
Another fine video Mike. Also I love my Super Duper Double Taper Sanding Disc!
Thanks Tim. Great to hear the disc is working out. Its a neat tool for sure.
Your work is always top notch. Glad you included your "mistakes" too with the stocking rod. Makes us amateurs feel better about the many 500lb f bombs we end up uttering when a real pro does it on occasion as well.
Thank you. Mistakes are part of the game. I'm going to make it a point to include more in future videos.
Gorgeous. Great job as always Mike!
Thank you Josh.
I cant believe I need to wait 10 min until the shop apprentice made their entrance. Please enjoy your time with them they grow-up so quick.
Thank you. I had one of those moments the other day, he was playing and I looked over and just thought, he is looking so tall. Every time I sneeze he's another year older.
@@MikeFarrington I was just thinking how big he is getting.
@@MikeFarrington Trust me. I sneezed a couple times and found myself watching my son graduate from college and start his own life in another state. Drink in every second you have with him.
The overall project is beautiful but getting all 3 holes for the rod to line up that accurate is incredible.
Ha! I had that thought as well. Fortunately, everything worked out.
Brilliant as always
Thank you.
Bringing down the whole table for the apprentice it's reason enough for me... I need to build one of those tables myself
Ha! The bench has been very useful.
Masterpiece as always Sir
Thank you kindly
Very nice work! So glad you realized your mistake before it was too late! Been there!!😂
Yes! Thank you!
I love seeing the detail you put into you craft. Always superb.
Thanks John.
Well done. I really enjoyed watching.
Glad you enjoyed it
Really beautiful and as always very entertaining. Thanks
Thank you.
Killer job Mike!
Thank you.
Great workmanship 👍👍👍
Thanks 👍
Looks fantastic Mike!
Thanks Thomas.
These early sneak peeks add way more to the experience. At least 10% more zazzle.
I think from now on, when possible, I'll let you guys in first. Hey, anything for more zazzle.
I didn't realize there was such a thing as a built-in stocking rod. I wish I saw this video a couple weeks ago before making my mantel. It would have made hanging a stocking much easier. I have more of an old mission style Spanish bungalow, but I think your design is classic.
Thank you Brent.
Rodney Dangerfield's "Back To School" introduced me to "Dead Man's Party".... thanks for reminding me!
Thank you. Great movie, great song.
Nice to see the pros make mistakes the same as us amateurs do. Good save mike.
We all make mistakes, thank you.
Utterly FANTASTIC Bud. One of my top 5 favorites you've made. Especially the stocking rod. Never seen that before. Hoping all is well Bud,Dirty Jersey out!!
Thank you very much sir.
Mike was going though withdrawals, TY for a new vid.
Ha! Thank you.
You have such a beautiful shop!
Thank you! 😊
You make these projects look too easy. Beautiful piece!
Thank you very much.
Mike for the win
Thank you.
Shop apprentice did a great job with this build.
Agreed.
That's a nice mantle. And video. And apprentice.
Thank you very much!
I come here for the music recommendation. The wood work is just bonus.
Ha! Thank you.
Holy Commercials, Mike!
Sorry, but they are a necessary part of the gig.
Agreed it’s necessary, just questioning the amount. Great video, as usual!
@@Steveme1973 Ah, well I only have a minimal amount of control over that. Out of curiosity, would you prefer I run in video spots, where I do the read, like for tools or other products?
"Dead mans party", I always think of the movie with Rodney Dangerfield, "Back to School".
Loved the mantel, especially the Arts and Crafts style, definitely my choice for furniture as it presents the wood well.
Thank you. Great song, great movie.
Your voiceovers make you the most entertaining woodworking channel. Your work is good too.
Thank you very much.
Just beautiful!
Thank you!
Absolutely a gorgeous mantle!!! What craftsmanship!!!! Excellent
Thank you very much!
For the first 20 years of my woodworking life I could only afford pine and oak. I've come to hate the look of both of them. However QSWO is so beautiful.
Well done.
White Oak is a great wood, its even better when its quartered.
"too close for missiles". Nice reference Luke.
Ha! Thanks.
Brilliant ! Like always .
Thank you.
Great job MIke! Enjoyed the video.
Thank you Andrew.
Great job Mike "Medium Density" Farrington!
Ha! Thanks Scott.
Wow 6,000’ ASL, not much to breathe at that altitude. Great video.
The air is thin up here for sure. Thank you.
Mike, I really love your videos. I keep telling all of my friends and family that you may just be the next Norm. Please keep producing content, I love it.
Thank you very much. That is about the highest compliment I could receive.
Another super project, thanks for the content!
My pleasure!
Great build Mike!
Thanks Brad.
Another great video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Magnificent! Your craftsman redone does great justice to the home!
Thank you Larry.
man the shop apprentice got big )
He sure has.
beautiful mantel!
Thank you.
It's always surprising how much work and time goes into what looks like a few boards and a few corbels. Nice work!
I have found that there are no shortcuts when doing good work.
The stocking rod is such a cool idea!
Thank you.
Great job, i enjoy watching your videos
Glad you like them!
Very nicely done. Thank you for sharing
Thank you! Cheers!
Like always another great video!!!
I appreciate that.
Beautiful job!
Thank you.
Great build
Thank you Chris.
Very nice! I like the idea of the rod for stockings. Happy Holidays!
Thanks! You too!
And my nice warm fuzzy feeling returns, washing all over me when I see a Mr Farrington video in my notification box. Hhhmm😊.
Ha! Thank you.
