  • Tucked away in Flushing’s Landmark Quest Mall is Yukun Shaobing, a 100 square-foot stall serving shaobing, Northern Chinese stuffed flatbreads. Ruokun Yu runs the shop, along with her business partner and roommate, Chunmei Tong. Across the street from Queens’ New World Mall, Yukun Shaobing offers 17 different types of shaobing including black pepper beef, cumin lamb, New Orleans chicken and many more.

    Flushing is a GOLDMINE. Queens in general, I just love how much culture and variation is there. I love that area, it feels like stepping off a plane when you come out of that 7station. I've never had bad food anywhere in Flushing. People care about their culture and traditions and are so proud to show everyone everything and I love that. Probably the only thing I love about NYC, I was never sheltered from diversity here. Definitely saved me in the long run and made me travel as an adult. I don't think I'd be as interested in experiences with other cultures the way I am now, if I didnt get to grow up around all types of people and food and languages. If you like cooking it also helps to diversify your palette and your PANTRY 😌💖

      @@maniswolftoman As a chef its hard to give away your recipes especially if you want an even bigger establishment. Can you see all the old restos in the US mostly owned and still operated by the Family members to keep the recipes in the family. Coz one wrong employee you lose your recipe and it gets passed or sold to others who have better start up capital then you get blindsided and you lose.

    • @maniswolftoman
      @maniswolftoman Před 3 lety +1

      @@siarthur No. Not really. Actually it’s probably the fear to teach technique that holds back many establishments from expansion. Recipes are at best a rough guideline that explain an idea or technique, but as you know as a chef, they do not account for being shorted in your produce order, what to do when the listed ingredient can only be substituted for something similar but lacking in the specific flavor profile listed, what to do when a popular item cannot be made due to a failure in the supply chain, etc.
      Chefs deal in the ability to solve problems, while cooks worry about having problems. I’ve never worked for a good chef that was scared to write down a recipe for one of their staff.
