    As a young 21 year old who made a (perhaps impulse) purchase on an old boat with an ‘89 20hp Johnson, you’ve been a big help with good info and just seeing how it’s done.. I believe myself to be fairly mechanically inclined, but was a bit hesitant to get into the outboard as I’ve never worked on one before and didn’t want to end up messing up the one I had just bought haha

    Great job with all three videos on changing out the water pump impeller. I have a couple of inputs. #1; I was having a difficult time putting the lower end back onto the unit. It would go up to about 3/4" and wouldnt go any further. I came back in and reviewed your 3rd video and I figured it out. When I removed my lower unit, the black plastic exhaust tube came off with it. The problem is that it wont seat back in if you have it on the lower unit. I realized in your video that you had just the shaft. Anyway, I went back out and pulled the black plastic tube off the drive shaft and then fitted up into the housing. Then I installed the lower unit and everything went as you said. Thanks for the great videos. Saved me some $$$.

      I just did this job yesterday and that tube gave me absolute hell. With the new o-ring on I could not get it to fit into the hole in the leg.
      I ended up putting it onto the top of the waterpump, and combined with turning the motor a little so the prop shaft meshed with the motor spline it just seemed to go in when i did the bolts up.
      I'm pretty good with mechanical stuff but this job threw me a bit.

    thanks for the video , helped a lot. It is tricky getting the lower half back to the upper half and have the water tube line up. But turned out great.

      I have a 94 I'm fixing to do this to as well. Did you run into anything that was different from this video? This seams about as detailed as you can get but if there are any tips you have for the 94-25 I'd love to hear em.

      Outdoors With Dwayne I did this job on my ‘94 and got it back together and now the shifter won’t engage properly for some reason. I have to turn the prop a little to get it to go into gear now

    Great video with detailed explanations. I removed my lower unit on my 94 Evinrude 30Hp to check the pump etc and a small plastic washer fell out. Any idea where this washer is from? It’s about the size of a dime. I watched several videos and no one mentions this washer. Thanks!

  • @hanscuda
    @hanscuda Před rokem

    Is the washer at the top of the water tube a specific thickness of will anything that fits over the tube work?

    Great 3 step process..
    I've followed your 3 video process and it went great on a 2003 20HP Johnson.
    My problem is now the Motor will only engage in reverse. To take it out of reverse I need to push the lever to Forward then to Neutral to disengage Reverse. If you push the lever to Forward is does not engage.
    Any idea as to what could happen?

    • @thisoldoutboard
      @thisoldoutboard  Před 4 lety

      More than likely you have something Wrong at the shift rod linkage between the water inlet screens. I’d check that first and make sure you have everything right there

    • @chongh757
      @chongh757 Před 4 lety

      @@thisoldoutboard Your right, I've mistakenly took out the lower linkage rod. (IDK)
      Do you know how high it should be? From the top of the base to the top of the lower linkage. (20HP Johnson 2003)

    What do you do if there is still no water flow from discharge on top/ underneath the hood on right side of engine after you have replaced the water pump with factory kit?

    Great video! One question, you don't need any sealant on the lower unit to motor connection?

      Just asked this same question before I saw this. Mine has a chewed up seal in between, is this okay to pull it apart, remove the broken seal and put it back metal in metal?

    Right around the 7:30 mark I notice water coming out of the small box on the top left side of the midsection. My 1994 Johnson 25hp does the same thing. I thought maybe I had a bad gasket. Do you know why it does this? Is that normal?

    Hey, is there i reason why you are saying that the video applies to 20, 25, 28 and 35 hp models BUT not to 30 hp models?
    I need to change the impeller on my J30BACO model with 30 hp (model year 1985)

    Is there no gasket between the lower and upper parts? Just got an 85 evinrude 2 stroke and mine has a gasket between there that is completely torn up. Thanks in advance for any advice

      Thank you for the response. New sub. Strange that mine has a gasket in there. It’s completely torn up and water came out of it when I tilted the motor up. I was wondering why I couldn’t find a replacement lol.

    My 87’ Evinrude never pisses water out that tube. Is there a way to make sure that tube isn’t blocked before I have to tear apart the lower?

      Run a small wire up it. Dirt dobbers can get up in there somehow

    Fantastic video,best I’ve seen on CZcams by far. Camera angles and explanations are so helpful. Thanks. I’m wintering my 98 Johnson 25 hp. I’ve got no water peeing out the telltale. I blew it out…. It seems to be clear. I’m going to replace the impeller with a kit from Amazon. I could not find your link,for the impeller,as you mentioned in your video. I have did subscribe to your channel.

      Make sure your impeller key is engaging otherwise the driveshaft will spin and not engage the impeller
