    In your video, you mentioned that the impeller looked good but you weren't getting water pressure out the tube. Same thing happened to me. Anyhow, I used your videos to remove, inspect, and reinstall the lower unit. The impeller was in great condition, so I started trouble shooting. I finally looked at the discharge tube and found that a mud bug had filled it up. I traced the tube back to where it attaches at the block and pulled it off. Then I got my nitrogen bottle and an air chuck out and blew it out and sure enough, all kinds of smelly crap came out. Moral of the story? Check the discharge tube before you pull the lower unit off! Also, for years I have always put the muffs on and did a start up in my driveway. Never had a problem till this year. I can see how someone would have launched their boat, fired it up and 2 minutes later hatched the motor. Glad I checked it out.

    Great job with all three videos on changing out the water pump impeller. I have a couple of inputs. #1; I was having a difficult time putting the lower end back onto the unit. It would go up to about 3/4" and wouldnt go any further. I came back in and reviewed your 3rd video and I figured it out. When I removed my lower unit, the black plastic exhaust tube came off with it. The problem is that it wont seat back in if you have it on the lower unit. I realized in your video that you had just the shaft. Anyway, I went back out and pulled the black plastic tube off the drive shaft and then fitted up into the housing. Then I installed the lower unit and everything went as you said. Thanks for the great videos. Saved me some $$$.

    What do you do when the nut will not slide up the shaft so you can get to the retainer?

    Does it matter what gear you are in when removing the lower unit? Thank you love your content

      You may have to toggle the gears during the process. I start out in neutral.

    I have a identical motor to the one you worked on. Anyhow I tore it apart because it got stuck in gear and now its being a pain to put back together. Do you happen to have a video on how you got your back together. Its not wanting to slide back to where it was seated before

    • @thisoldoutboard
      @thisoldoutboard  Před 4 lety +1

      Try turning the flywheel with one hand or with a buddy while you push the lower unit up. Sometimes you have to do that to get the splines to line up on the end of the driveshaft to the bottom of the power head

    Dear what is the purpose of the keeper underneath the linkage gearbox joint. I lost the nylon tapered keeper can I replace it with a small O ring please so the linkage nut will not slip off? Thanks in advance, very informative video

      To clarify the plastic keeper I have lost is located underneath the upper shift nut. Is a stiff O-ring enough in doing the same job of the plastic keeper as I cannot purchase locally.

    I have a 88 evinrude 28spl. Looks totally different than your motor. I can't find a video on the water pump change anywhere.

      @@user-ih5wc2eb6r yea i had to heat the small coupler with a small torch & tap it lightly with a hammer to get it to slide freely up the shaft, the plastic retainer was stuck on. I had to replace the black retainers also. They are like $15 a piece
