Yes! And it happens in smaller circles, too. My poor mom was a loyal member of a local Baptist congregation. She tithed her 10% of her measly social security every month. Her preacher drove a red Jaguar convertible! Nice suits... They built a whole new building and bragged about no debt. Yet when my poor mother went and asked for help with a bill or groceries, he'd literally tell her God wanted her to have faith that it would work out... 🤬 Scammers everywhere.
Please feel free to advise me of a place of worship that isn't extravagant. As far as I'm aware, all religions and sects have their meeting places built to the exult of their god/leader. The truth is, god is in my back yard under a rock, he only talks to me. Like most gods, he is super duper powerful, he can do anything we could ever imagine. He told me, he likes it when people give me money to pass on his rules for life. Do you want to know what he teaches,? One of my favorite thing about my church is they make very clear “sow and God will bless you, and yes that can mean the church.” Me and my wife were new in town and there were no open apartments. When the “so where are you guys living right now question came up and we answered “well a camp sight but hopefully not for long,” me and my wife were basically held hostage until until we left with 500 dollars in our pocket and the keys to an RV a congruent wasn’t using at the moment. A church with a fat bank account is a wonderful thing if the damn leadership actually love God.
If this is even true, it's rare. Unless you work with a charity or some city program, churches usually take money, not just give it. I wonder how many other people were "held hostage" and given money? I've heard of congregants coming together and donating to some person or cause, but that's some backwards prosperity gospel.

He is now being sued for $300,000 for nonpayment of a Connecticut based apartment complex for lack of repairs and non-payment and his trial is set for February 2024

My knowledge have ever acted like this, nearly resigned to my knowledge is because there was one church that was super hyper Religious to the point of judging the church down the street from them for not worshipping properly. I was reading a psychology study the other day which found that the amygdala (one of the key brain structures responsible for the fight-and-flight response) is also responsible for our guilty conscience, but it can be muted by pathological lying. One major problem in the “church” is the idea that every believer is supposed to be wealthy/rich/a millionaire…once this misconception is in a persons head every principle is run through that filter. And it is misleading…and in the end disappointing…some people are soooo hungry for money they are now blind and deaf to the truth of GODS WORD and will continue to follow wolves and be devoured…l pray those in such a dilemma would be delivered. I caution all, don’t be bitter with those who minister the truth. They are the true watchmen over our souls… LOVE TO ALL!
It's more an American and African idea. Most other countries/continents don't have this. It's exploiting the American dream and desperation of the poor. South America has it in places too. But you don't see this in Europe to any large degree due to the standard of living and hundreds of years experience of Christian crooks. Even Henry VIII rejected the pope.
Although the black Dispora in Europe sadly do fall for this to a lesser degree in their churches.

His father was NOT killed. He used that poor man’s death as clout. When the actual children of that man got a settlement from the police he started claiming that he was their long lost secret brother. When the siblings asked him to submit to a DNA test he refused. He now just says that the gentleman was his father as part of his “redemption” story, but again he is NOT at all related.

I had a wealthy Pastor once. Very unassuming. Didn't wave it in your face. He refused to draw a salary (large church) because he didn't need it. No speakers fees. He made his money as a motivational speaker and author. Additionally, he had done well with investments.
He gave to the church too and helped cover speaker's fees and room / board when guest speakers would come.
He practiced what he preached. He was a good man and I'm glad we knew him and his family.

It seems like these days all you have to do is have a silver tongue, nice clothes, and a few compliments and people will hand over their money and possessions...
