In this video I deconstruct an image lit with colored gels to transform an ordinary location into something that looks like a nightclub or bar. Even though this says "on location" I am in my studio but I'm not using the studio like I normally would against a backdrop.
As you probably know, I often shoot beauty and fashion images in the confines of my studio space, but I wanted an image that looked a bit more on-location with a sense of atmosphere. I decided to pose my subject on the couch in the sitting area of the studio and add gels to make the space have a more interesting mood.
With the subject posed on a red couch, I decided to base my gel choice off of the furniture in the image. One light would have a red strobe, and another would have a teal strobe. I wanted to select complementary colors, but decided that red/green may be a bit too ‘Christmas’ in feel, so I selected an analogous color of teal.
Analogous colors are colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. For example, yellow, green-yellow, and green are categorized as analogous colors. The word 'analogous' is defined as two things with a similar function or feature that are comparable to one another.
I posed the subject across the couch to make a more pleasing shape with her body and more interesting composition for the eye to explore.
The shot as lit overhead by a small white umbrella (no gel). The right hand side of the frame was lit by a large deep umbrella with diffusion and a red gel to wrap around most of the frame. Finally a bare bulb with a teal/green gel was used to light the shadows on the left of the frame. The colors selected helped create a sense of atmosphere to the otherwise static black environment.
I hope you enjoyed this photo deconstruction and it inspired you to turn ordinary locations into anything you want them to be!

Thank you.
It is so refreshing to see somebody who is all about the creative process and technique rather than gear and preset oriented.
I really appreciate all the work you put into this.
wow!!! amazing job!
Thanks for sharing! You rock Lindsay!
Realy nice video , Lady Adler. Hi. From CapeTown, South Africa.
I like the way you transform a corner of your studio into a disco or night spot based on light ... extraordinary! I liked that in the end you cut enough so that you don't see a small part of the other leg because that caused distraction ...
Glad you enjoyed!
Excellent video and deconstruction as always!!
I really appreciate how you walked us through your thought process for choosing the color and photo concept here. Thank you very much
Lindsay you're something special 😊. Love your work! and the way you carry your self is 👌
I love you Lindsay
great job, thank you!
I love seeing how you work with gels, thank you!!!
I don't know how you don't have more views. Your videos really help and thank you for taking the time to explain your set up!
lol me neither? though honestly I just started doing these.
These photo deconstructions are both fascinating and instructive Lindsay. Thank you for taking the time and effort to share them. ❤️
Thank so you much Stephen!
Excellent as always Lindsay. It also makes me want to get a drink later at a night club. Shaken, not stirred!....well done.................
Philip

Another great deconstruct video Lindsay, thanks for sharing your thought process and how it all comes together. Keep em coming pls :-)
Thanks for the walk-through, Lindsay!
Thanks for sharing. Really like the lighting, the mood, colors, clothing etc, very inspiring!
Never normally use the transform tool in that way - Ill give it a try though now! thanks Lindsay!!!
Great breakdown. I always throughly enjoy you videos.
Always clear and concise instructions, very creative. wish I had all the lighting equipment to work with! thanks.
Thank you, Lindsay! You are a great teacher!
I've been admiring your photographic skills and your highly vibrant personality for a long time.
(And that absolutely gorgeous mane of hair, I must add :) )
hahaha. :D
loved the walkthrough thank you!
Thanks for another great deconstruction.
Really cool!! I often look for space behind the subject but this way you really used the "tight" area with a wall right behind the model and it turned out so well. Good lighting made it possible for such a set up I think. Really nice! You got a sub!
Amazing as always!
Another great deconstruction great shot , I love playing with gel's can make a photo look so different. Keep these video's coming Lindsay 👍👍👍 . Two deconstruction's in one week fantastic 💗.
There are three more! Since this is gel week!
@@lindsayadlerphoto Can't wait, i'm working nights this week so i get them a day late haha will give me something to look forward to . Thank you Lindsay x .
Love it!!!
Very inspiring to try some new techniques! Fantastic!
Thank you Lindsay; the deconstructions are very interestings
Thanks Lindsay you are a great inspiration ..
Thanks so much! Your videos are amazing!!
Recent subscriber and I gotta say I love how you explain in detail everything . And I also love how you mentioned to challenge yourself with taking something ordinary and seeing it in a different perspective 🙌
Welcome aboard! Thank you for the kind words! :)
Brilliant ! Thank you for sharing - yes, the teal reflected on her dress does unify the picture.
What if you had placed a main light aimed at her face? (perhaps using a grid or barn doors) I also would have tried with a silver umbrella, instead of the white soft that you used, and used it as a hair and separation light. Not that I don't like your image, it is just imagining what the result would have been doing these changes. i am going to try it myself. Thanks again, Lidsay, you inspire me to experiment!
I actually shot this scene 4 different ways... each one gave me a cool and different result!
super video, love the lighting
Enjoy hearing your thought process!
CREATIVE THANK YOU,IM GOING TO TRY THIS
Thank you so much for sharing valuable tips .
Great video and demonstration.
Thank you!

You’re awesome! Very inspiring
gracias por la informacion.....boom dia
Thank you very much. Can you share with us how did you add the neon-like text on the wall?
Love you mam!
love your videos cant stop looking at your red lips !!!!
Damn it Lindsay, you’re making want a 3rd light?! LOL
Awesome, I'm about to do a shoot of a spider on a model :)
omg!
I liked how you elongated her in the frame, rather than crop the image.
Great work as always. Can you show us any full length shots that use gels?
Thanks! Just visit my website lindsayadlerphotography.com -- I have many!
Thank you for this video
Thank you so much
I enjoy your work and your work flows quite a bit. Just to nitpick and I’m sure you know this: the opposite of red isn't green. It's cyan. The one thing that bothered me about your final image was the line of the back of the couch. It was close to horizontal, but not quite horizontal. Making it horizontal might have given the feel of stiffness, but left the way you did it feels like I want to nudge it level.
So there are actually a couple of color wheels! Which I always thought to be strange-- but they will actually have different colors match up from one another on the color wheel. So in some that is true. And sure, I totally see the horizontal part.:D
Wow! Thanks a lot Lindsay!
You're like Santa for giving us such beautiful presents! But... you're real, so basically you're better than Santa! :D
BTW I've always wondered how to attach gels to bare bulb strobes. I feel you're doing this a lot so you must have a super hiding technique (aka DIY maybe!) but I find this quite tricky since I'm afraid they kinda melt on the bulb...
Thanks again for all those wonderful videos
Regards from France!
I just use gaffers tape and bend them out so the gel isn't directly against the head. :D
And thank you. You are the cutest and sweetest. :D
Ah ! I thought it was this kind of mastermind trick! :D I'll try that as soon as I can!
I love gel photography, so your "Gel photography week" is like a chief meal to me! I can't say thanks enough time.
I'm on my way to watch your latest video! :D
This is really well explained. Thank you! I have a theoretical question... if I’d shoot this with the same set up, but I’d use a beauty dish instead of the key light and an Octabox instead of the deep umbrella. How would that change the look? Do you think it would be significantly different?
I think if you position the light carefully you could get a similar look... the spread of light and quality would change slightly but not significantly.
As an elementary school educator and dance/music instructor, I love your teaching/communication style. I just ordered your posing book too 🤗! Do you do photography workshops too Lindsay?
Thank you! And I do! You can see them up on learnwithlindsay.com under events. I travel often and teaching intensives at my studio in NYC
Great content and tips as always. Love the colors, lighting and feeling. I´m just curious only about one thing: what if you had swaped the C-stand and regular tripod positions? That way you could avoid the image left side cloning.
Makes no difference. probably just speed.. I only have so much space on either side and it was probably just what was easiest to maneuver. You could do as you suggest for sure!
@@lindsayadlerphoto Right, very much like this has happened to me once, that´s why I only suggested it as an option. Love your work, and your tutorials are great!
Excellent video as usual. What were then ratios between the three lights?
Don't really recall, sorry.
top!
How are you attaching gels to barebulb profoto lights ?
They have the frosted glass in front (so I don't have to worry about them hitting the flash tube itself). All I do is use gaffers tape and slightly bow out the gel to not touch the front. That's it!
Thanks a ton! That’s what I am doing but the frosted glass quickly gets really hot and I’m always scared that the gel may catch on fire.
Great work, thank you for sharing your thoughts with us, love this format, please please more!
More coming! :D
💙🧡❤
Thanks for the video and the clear explanations. But now I cry, I need a 3rd flash xD (Santa Claus if you read me...)
i am wondering about her eyes the whites are teal ? i think i would change them, thank you
Not sure, probably from the gel
How can anyone NOT LIKE these videos. Once again...Thank you Lindsey! You're really Dope!!!! Great Instructor! Bowtie
Very kind of you!
Nice job and wonderful results. Could you not have just moved the couch along the wall about 2 feet?
No, lots of other furniture in the way
