    ----
In this photo deconstruction I break down the making of a colorful painterly beauty image with an illustrative look. I began by being inspired by the painterly look created by makeup artist Yvonne Macinnis, and then decided what type of lighting would complement her creation.
First, I decided that a white background would help to create a stark canvas for the subject and that I would also lighten the skin (to almost white) to match the background. I lit the background with two small white umbrellas on either side for even illumination on a grey background.
Next, I lit the subject with a white beauty with a grid. The fill light (below) was a silver beauty dish and a blue gel. This blue gel would fill in the shadows on the face, and be a compliment to the yellow paint on the face (and match some of the blue paint).
Post-processing played a major role in the ‘illustrative’ and painterly look of the image. I drastically increased contrast and clarity, desaturated the skin tone, and saturated all of the paint colors of the face. These changes worked together to give a graphic and pop art look to the image.
What do you think? Is this something that you would try? Let me know in the comments!

Dear Lindsay, hope you're safe and sound during the pandemic. I visited N.Y. several times while I was doing my Ph.D. in Washington D.C. and I loved it. At present, I live in Tehran. My hobby is photography. I spend hours and ours watching your tutorials on CZcams. You are an amazing lady, confident and courageous- and stunningly beautiful...
I do appreciate your generosity in sharing your broad knowledge of photography with the enthusiasts .
My two daughters live in Albany near you! If and when I come to the States, I make sure to pay you a visit at

I really do feel you played a just as crucial role as Yvonne because there's no way someone could get that porcelain, white skin look easily without clown powdering the subject. Your lighting and processing is so creatively done! It's amazing seeing two powerful artists create so harmoniously, not to mention the talented model!

I did a body art shoot were the artist painted a suit onto a model. Adjusting the colors was harder than I anticipated. Because i did want to adjust the models face. Just the paint. This was s great video!

I think the studio lighting work is fantastic, but I imagine you had a very clear idea of what you would do on the computer. The two things complement each other and the result is great.

I do not always like the end result (matter of taste as I have said before), but I always love the deconstruction and the thought process. Not getting locked in is a key.
There are many who think that you always have the final image in your mind. Not so. You have a base concept that you work to, but the final often takes on a life of its own as you progress. As you say over and over, you need an idea or a goal at the beginning of the shoot, but that may not be where you end up.
Could you do a deconstruct on something that ended up very, very different than originally intended? I think you have already done this in the past, but current would be nice. It would help to illustrate to people to NOT get locked into their original concept, and to allow themselves to be flexible enough to go where the image takes them. This is during the shoot and in post.
It is very satisfying to work and end up with exactly what you imagined, but sometimes the better image comes from following where the image takes you.
    As always, GREAT.
