*Do you agree with your country's safety ranking?*
Important to point out that I *don't* agree with some of this ranking; It seems to me that they should have two separate indexes that depict the behavior of a nation or its regime / government towards global security (militarization etc) and another one that depicts the internal safety of its own citizens. Mixing up the two does not offer the most accurate view of either!

As an American I could agree with yellow maybe but to be classified the same as Mexico lol? Our militarization is rated worse, meanwhile Mexico literally has to send their army in to kill armed gangs while their helicopters get shot at but sure...America's worse. Just another America bad study at a quick glance but perhaps I'll look more into the data later

As an American who's traveled across much of Europe, this ranking definitely makes sense.
I remember being on a tour in Switzerland which ended at lake Zurich. There was a lot of American backpackers with us, and they wanted to explore the city, or swim in the lake. Our tour guide was very insistent that they could just leave all their stuff on the shore, and promised no one would take their stuff. That seemed to be a difficult concept for some of them to understand. But she ended up being right.

As an American living in Tokyo, I think my only source of surprise is how LOW on the list Japan is -- #10! Hard to believe there are nine countries deemed safer than this one, but I guess anywhere in that top part of the list is going to have a pretty similar vibe.
Either way, the contrast between Japan and the U.S. is STARK. Even in so-called safe parts of the U.S., I still always found myself side-eyeing strangers, keeping a tight grip on my belongings at all times, and -- sadly -- always making sure I knew the quickest escape route in case a mass shooting were to break out.
Those types of thoughts simply DO NOT go through my mind living in Japan. Any time of the day or night, in any part of the city or country, I feel 100% at ease walking by myself without a care in the world. It's an amazing feeling that I wish more people in the world could know.

As a Brazilian who just came back from Japan (after 12 years), I am really glad to see Japan on the list, even though I think it deserves a little bit more than #10! I have so many stories to share: one day, I totally forgot my wallet with money, IDs and cards inside my bike's basket on the street. One day later, I went outside and there my wallet was, at the same place with all my stuff. Dude, if it was here in Brazil, someone would have take the whole bike together... 😵‍💫 The same way, eveytime I found a wallet or iPhone on the streets, I returned it to the Police station. And I love this respect and consideration Japanese society has. I love being part of that. Yesterday I fianlly met our Portuguese neighbor (here in Brazil), and we were talking, at night, here on the street, outside our houses. I was so afraid that I had to check EVERY damn person (walking or on a motorbike, etc) who was passing us by (we always think someone will robber you...). The Portuguese guy said to me: "I can see you are very nervous just being here outside at night. You will never experience this feeling when you go to Portugal. Trust me!". Here I am, back from Japan, just "enjoying" my free time with my brazilian family, but ready to leave Brazil and go to study in Portugal. And I am glad (and makes me feel relieved) to see on this list that Portugal is one of the safest countries in Europe. I hope I have a peaceful time there. That’s pretty easy to figure out. The more urban a state the more dangerous. So the coasts and Texas drag the US down the most with Illinois getting a special mention. While states like Alaska, Wyoming, and Montana are likely in the Blue or at least Green. The rest of the states would likely be distributed in between them all. Note I’m not dissing urban living but it typically results in larger per capita police forces and greater degree of small arms gun ownership per capita. Likewise the obvious wealth gap in cities encourages higher crime rates as well. It’s also of note just our general extremely high military budget also drags the US down quite a bit on top of that.

If not for NORAD Canada would NEED a much higher military budget AND a larger military in general. Likewise, for New Zealand and it being protected via the Anglo-alliance which gives it (alongside its geographic isolation) two major protectors in its region (Australia and the US) thus affording it the ability to HAVE a minimalist military. Indeed the US’s alliances is what allowed Europe to rank so low as well as without NATO European national defense budgets and militaries would both necessarily be much larger as they wouldn’t have the powerful protection of the worlds most powerful military to dissuade invasions from the likes of Russia and indeed each other.

was quite surprised to see the netherlands so far down so i went digging through the report and were near the bottom in militarisation. mainly because of arms exports i think (Thales and the like), possibly also coz we store some nuclear bombs from the USA.

I have to say that they really dropped the ball on Haiti! That country right now should be in the top 10 most dangerous countries, but is listed as somewhat unsafe on this index.

America is orange on the map. Yeah I guess that makes sense. There has been a lot more crime in general here. Rapid development in cities means rapid spike in crime, the city where I live in used to be relatively peaceful but now it has a lot of crime in it. Democrats and Republicans are becoming more polarized and everyone in the middle/moderate areas of the spectrum either have to choose a side or just hide from the politics. January 6th was not good, and it led to even more riots across the country. If we have another January 6th style capital riot, then I think we all know where this country is going.
I want to move to Europe some day, specifically somewhere in western Europe, but I don't think I'll be able to make the switch any time soon. Also the brain drain in Europe is a bit of a concern especially for finding jobs and opportunities.
Living in a safer country where cars are not broken into every second and where no drivers hit pedestrians on the cross walk would be a big plus, yeah I think the US deserves the orange color on the map unfortunately. I really hope my country improves and gets better.

I mean it does suck but at the same time it makes sense. The index is about safety not peacefulness. A country being invaded would naturally become less safe while the invaders wouldn’t realistically be affected.

The murder rate in The USA is a little over 7 times that in the UK. The death rate from road traffic accidents is over 5 times as high. The death rate by shooting is well over 100 times as high. People will respond "but you have lots of stabbings instead." It is true that the death rate from stabbing is higher than in the US, but only by 20% and is already included in the overall murder rate. And the majority of UK deaths by shooting are suicide. So we have far fewer guns, safer cars and better drivers.
