▶ In this video I talk about Slavic Flags and how they are similar. Attempting to provide an historical context, I explain how all of these flags share the red, white and blue colours with the pan-slavic flag created at the Congress of 1848, which was itself inspired in the Russian flag. The Russian flag was, in turn, influenced by the Dutch flag - due to Peter The Great's desire to turn Russia into a European Power, as well as his passion for all things Dutch due to his visits to the country. After understanding who the Slavs are, which countries are considered Slavic, and which of these effectively use the slavic tricolor(s). Finally I go through the 7 countries (Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czechia, Bulgaria, and Russia) that do use them and look into when they were put into use, as well as how these colours often reflect not only the slavic heritage but also a connection to the banners and coats of arms of the local medieval predecessors.

As you pointed out correctly, Bohemia's original flag was white-and-red. And when Czechoslovakia was created they added the blue triangle to represent Slovakia. But you missed here a fun fact that is worth telling. When the two countries split again in 1993, Czechia could not come back to their original white-and-red flag simply because in the meanwhile it had been stolen by Poland. And Poland's historical flag was actually red-white-red, but that one was in turn stolen by the Austrians.

The Polish flag is more years old than the Polish state itself. These were the colors of the princes of the Piast dynasty, who founded the first dynasty of Polish kings - which means that the flag is at least 1100 years old (the Polish state was officially established in 966). Lol, we speak Czech, we're definitely a Slavic nation. The fact that we stole the Czechoslovakia flag doesn't mean we're not Slavs. Czech and Slovak are very similar languages. My videos are almost always in Czech but 20% of my viewers are Slovak - they have no problem understanding Czech. Russian is considered the lazy option when kids choose their second foreign language at school because learning another Slavic language is easier for Czechs. I've also read about a third of a novel in Croatian (silly me, didn't bring enough books on the trip), I understood a lot, it felt like reading very weird Slovak.

@@guzelpitt5302 Well, usually in middle school some of us get to choose between what language we want to learn as a second foreign language - either German or Russian. (It differs from school to school obviously - some schools even offer French or other languages but mostly it's a choice between German or Russian, though there are schools that only have German language teachers so some people don't even get to choose and are forced to learn German.) That's why Russian is the "lazy" and "easy" option because it's a Slavic language so obviously it's easier for us to learn than German. But I wouldn't necessarily say Russian is easy for us to learn (Croatian is much easier, I've been told, since the languages are more alike), it's just *easier* than German.
And there are many Czechs who speak Russian but they are mostly from older generations as during communism learning Russian was mandatory the same way learning English is today. But yeah, Russian isn't very popular nowadays and I would blame history for that.

@@sammyizhere Uhm... Well... The thing is I know very little about those languages so I can't really speak on it like I can for my native language. That being said, I think "very easy" is not the correct way to put it. Would it be *easier* than learning an "unrelated" language (like Swedish or German or Polish or Chinese or something)? Yeah, I think so.
But yes, generally when you have a native speaker of a language in one language family (in our case Portuguese, a Romance language) learning another language that also belongs in that family (as you mentioned Spanish, French, Italian or Romanian) tends to lean moreso on the easy side of the spectrum for them. The difficulty will vary obv, I would think that for a Portuguese person, Romanian will be more difficult to learn than Spanish, just simply bcs of the distance between the three countries that speak these languages - from which we can assume that the bigger the distance, the bigger the difference in the languages. However, again, I think a Portuguese will pick up even Romanian probably a lot more easily than like... Hindi imho. *I* would put it that way anyway 😂

When we talk about word slovo, there is one funny connection: Poles call themselves ,,słowianie" which could mean ,,those who know words" but they call germans ,,Niemcy" which could come from ,,those who don't talk/don't know words". Anyway, as Germans were (back then) the only non-Slavic neighbours, that designator became synonymous with German people.

There is a misuderstanding of the origin of Slovene national flag. It was acctually the firs slavic flag using the combination of white (top), blue (middle) and red (bottom). The flag originates from the coat of the arms of the Land of Carniola. The Book of Coats of Arms from 1370 describes that the coat of arms of the Land of Carniola is a heraldic blue eagle (in takeoff) on a white (heraldically silver) background, with a right-facing head (according to heraldic standards), which has a white-red painted and downward-facing crescent on its chest . In 1463, Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II. he allowed the Carniolan provincial estates (the Carniolan army saved his empire and also his life in the battle) to use yellow (gold) in their coat of arms instead of white (silver), and place a golden imperial crown on the eagle's head.
In his numerous writings, heraldry researcher Dr. Šavli states that the regional coat of arms was created even before the elevation of Carniola to a duchy in 1364, according to some sources, the years 1156 and 1161 are mentioned.
The nowadays Russian flag was first used as an ensign for Russian merchant ships in 1696 It remained as a merchands flag in use until 1858, when the first official flag of the Russian Empire was decreed by Alexander II, which was a tricolour consisting of three horizontal fields: black on the top, yellow in the middle, and white on the bottom. A decree in 1896 reinstated the white, blue, and red tricolour as the official flag of the Russian Empire until 1917.
So Slovenian flag is with over 500 years older origins and the colour similar to Dutch flag and later to Russian flag is just a coincidence. The modern Russian flag as the national flag was declared in 1993 as the Slovenian flag was in 1945 as the flag of the Republic of Slovenia part of the Yugoslav federation. The Slovenian national flag was adopted by the Slovenian Assembly on June 24, 1991, when it adopted an amendment to the 1974 constitution, replacing the old flag shortly before Slovenia gained independence. So no "copy-pasting", but opposite ;)

Šavli is also known for disproven theories like the supposed real ancestors of Slovenes being the Veneti and not the slavic people. While it is true that our German speaking neighbours and former fellow countrymen have called us Windisch, this comes from the slavic tribe the Wends, not to be confused with the latin tribe Veneti, who lived around Venice. But as likely as it is that our slavic ancestors have intermingled with the germanic tribes, it is also they likely they did the same with the latin ones. So maybe there is some truth after all.
It is true tho, that the color combination of white, blue and red, has been used in the heraldry of the Duchy of Carniola since the 13th century, before it even became a duchy. But it was not untill 1848, that the tricolor was used in a modern horizontal lines fashion, that is also seen today in our flag. 1848 was also the year of the Prague Slavic Congress, which our deputies attended.
I don't think it matters who was first, and the colors aren't really exclusive to slavic countries. France, Netherlands, USA, etc. have the same colors. We are all copying each other.

Yes. This folk etymology is shared everywhere on the internet. Just look at the other comments under this video. You guys are like bots. But the truth could be somewhere else. The tricolour flag of Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia is basically Czech tricolour that was created by adding blue stripe under original bicolour. Possible explanation could be that those three colours are found on coat of arms of Bohemia and Moravia. Bohemian bicolour is derived from it's coat of arm. White/silver lion, and red background. Moravian coat of arm cosists od red-silver eagle and blue background. Those two combined could easily form WRB tricolour thus there was no need for any change.
As well the current flag was result of contest held early after WWI and many of suggestions were not even using all Slavic colours, many had represented parts of Czechoslovakia by stars and so on. There was even proposal inspired by flag of Texas and few by old flag of Ireland or Alabama, but with added stars. There were as well some proposals that had used black colour (reference to the Hussite movement). So the current flag is more likely result of happy coincidence.

Poland and (old) Bohemia flags derive from their medieval coats-of-arms, white eagle/lion on red (~12-13th century). they precede any "Pan-Slavic ideas" by ~600 years. Poland / Bohemian flags simply follow an old European heraldic pattern: the flag colors derive from the charge & shield of the medieval coat-of-arms. The coat-of-arms, in turn, is usually the crest of a ruling dynasty, or a major city. It's a very common heraldic pattern in Europe: Austria (from the crest of Babenbergs), Luxemburg (Luxemburg/Limburg), Bavaria (Wittelsbach), Tirol (Albert of Tirol), Monaco, San Marino (from city crests) etc. Many of these flags use some combinations of white and red or blue, simply because these colors are very common in heraldry.

The whole "Slav" thing isn't really controversial and is pretty established. As is one of the suggestions, it means "People of the word". While the word itself can be debated, the broader context of these languages and how other words are used makes it pretty clear. The Slavic word for Germans for example is some form of "Neimetz", which translates to roughly "people that don't speak".
English word for Slave does indeed come from "Slav" (Not the other way around as the video suggests at one point). This was the result of the Slavic slave trade which is about as studied as unicorns, but in recent decades academics started to seriously look into it as a massive catalyst for the Atlantic Slave trade and foundation of Western European economy.

Blue, white and red are the most popular colours used in flags around the world. Does it make the blue, white and red horizontal stripes pan-Slavic if we consider the fact that combinations of those stripes are used all over the globe? According to the religion and mythology of old Slavs (pre Christian time when we all were pagan people who spoke the same language and believed in the same gods) colors on the Slav flags are chosen based on the gods of that time. I will take Russian for example:
    1. White color - the highest one representing the supreme god Svarog who ruled the world and everything in the world,
    2. Blue color - representing the god Perun the thunder maker who had the highest force in the world and,
    3. Red color - representing the red bearded god Vid who was our progenitor.
Svarog had the son named Dažbog or Dabog, Dajbog (god of the Sun, Rain and Fire) whom Serbian people for example took as their highest or supreme deity. Name Dažbog or Dabog, Dajbog means (daž-bog, da-bog, daj-bog) "daž, da, daj = gives", "bog = god" so it is the god who gives. He gives the life on earth since he gives the sunlight as god of the sun. And old Slavs because of the great respect to those appearances they believed in the cult of sun, rain and fire since their entire survival was depending on them.
Also it is believed that Dažbog or Dabog, Dajbog was the ancestor of the Russian people and all Slavs in general.
Serbian people today have the flag that goes from the top: red, blue and white (inverted Russian flag) which means red bearded god Vid is on the top. And even today Serbian people also Bulgarian too are celebrating the day of Vidovdan (day of the god Vid celebrated every year at 28th of June).
Also very important battle in Serbian history took place at the day of Vidovdan (28th June 1389) at Kosovo in place Gazimestan where Serbian warriors were in huge battle with Ottoman empire who wanted to conquer the historical Serbian land. At Gazimestan it is growing one endemic kind of flower - red peony. And it is believed it started growing red because of the spilled blood in the soil of Serbian warriors after the battle of Kosovo. So yet again red color from the red peony and read bearded god Vid can be connected together in this event happened at Vidovdan and why red color it is on the flag.
Religion and mythology of old Slavs is really a fascinating and great one. They could be read as bedtime stories to children  Once Slavs or better said old Slavs were ONE people occupying huge territory and "modern" ages invented nations accompanied with greed and hunger for the power and started dividing once unified people into multiple nations. All in all Slavs no matter where, are the great people and personally I am beyond proud by being a Slav.

👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍Russians are not Slavs, there are only 6% of Slavs in Russia,
the rest are fino - ugers, tatars, caucasians, mongols, asians, etc.
Russia - USSR created this lie for its own IMPERIAL purposes (that Russians are Slavs) to FALSE suck up to the Slavic nations in Eastern Europe, and then occupy, murder ☠☠☠☠, resettle to Siberia, rob, Russify, these countries under the guise of tz .
      "Slavic brotherhood".
If you still think that the Russians are Slavs, then you have become a victim of hypocritical Russian perfidious, mean Russian propaganda. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Nearly 1/3 of the current territory of Germany is the former Slavic lands. Many Germans have Slavic ancestors. To this day, there are Slavic enclaves in Lusatia. The Polabian Sorbs have retained their language and elements of culture to this day.
