▶ In this video I talk about a few of the best flags that have been proposed for countries. None of these ended up being used, for various reasons which we find out in this video. From the US inspired Portuguese choice, to a Belarus flag that recovers an old banner and uses the symbols of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania as inspiration. Looking at a fantastic 6 color flag for Armenia, proposed in 1918 by famous painter Martiros Saryan, As well as two alternatives for Bosnia and Herzegovina that better honor the original Republic of Bosnia's flag. Briefly mentioning Australia and New Zealand and the attempts they have made at redesigning their colonial ensigns. Talking about China's 1949 vast set of flag proposals, and going through some of the proposals that would have made both Finland and Norway not use the Nordic Cross template. Finally also taking a look at Malaysia and Tajikistan.

I really like Medieval heraldry, don't get me wrong, but I do think a country's flag needs to be simple. Somebody commented the "8 year old rule"; so that each flag needs to be simple enough that an 8 year old could draw it in class. I think this is an issue that medieval heraldry depictions would face, unless they were 'simplified' for the sake of the flag. For instance, Luxembourg's lion could definitely be stylized in a simpler way.

Those Portuguese and especially Belarusian designs are so ridiculously gorgeous, I didn’t know I could feel so strongly about a flag but they are just so lovely.
As an Australian, my favourite redesign is blue and gold, which I think is appropriate because the blue carries over from our old flag and represents the oceans that surround us, while the gold represents our sun, sand, and riches. It has a kangaroo silhouette separating the two fields of colours, which is an animal that can only go forward, representing progress. Then it also retains the southern cross, which I think just looks nice and connects us to our geographical region.

Quick correction: Greenland is not the only Nordic region to not use a Nordic cross. The flag of Sápmi, an area covering northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Kola Peninsula of northwestern Russia and the traditional homeland of the Sámi people, is not a Nordic cross either. It does however have minor design similarities with the flag of Greenland in that it also incorporates a multicolored disc which among other things represents the sun. I think there's a nice sense of cohesion in that the two major non-Nordic cross Nordic flags are tied to indigenous peoples and incorporate sun imagery (though unfortunately Karelia, the third major indigenous territory of the Nordic region, does not follow suit but rather uses a Nordic cross and a tricolor)

The Australian government is directly connected to the British monarchy, whereby the Governor General, appointed by the UK monarch, can be instructed by said monarch to remove and replace the sitting Prime Minister, which actually happened once.
So the UK connection is not just a cultural one.
I guess in this case a flag in the corner that better represents this connection would be the Royal Standard, but you get the idea.

The flag itself is good, but the connotation already exists in a negative way (although this is a fixable matter in the future). It's just that the slogan "represents an oppressive regime that suppresses the own people" can be applied to a large number of countries, but is it worth changing the flag later because of this, I think not. And the thing is-the red and white flag is referred to the banners of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Therefore, it does not look particularly original, because there are a lot of red and white flags in Europe, plus the option with a Nordic cross also looks strange. Therefore, yes, I am also for the current flag, but I hope that in the future the attitude towards it will change.

Greetings from Belarus! A few notes to mention:
    1. The knight on the Belarusian coat of arms is not St. George, the figure never depicted any particular person at any point. This coat of arms called “Pahonia” (or "Pursuit" eng.), it’s a very old medieval symbol that is in use on these lands starting from the 14th century.
    2. You are completely right about the cross, it was added when the Grand Duke Władysław II Jagiełło got married with the Hungarian princess Jadwiga and this cross became the symbol of his dynasty.
    3. Belarus was not partially in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, it was completely in it almost from the very beginning up to the very end of the state. GDL appeared on the territory of the Western Belarus and South-Eastern part modern Republic of Lithuania.
    4. It’s worth mentioning that white-red-white flag was the official flag of the Republic from 1991 to 1995 when the dictature was established and the Soviet red-green flag was returned violating the Constitution
    5. Neither 1992 nor 2016 proposals with the Scandinavian cross were not officially considered or taken seriously at any level, these are proposals by amateurs having played around with different concepts.
    6. The Belarusian national or democratic movement uses the white-red-white flag and Pahonia in different combinations considering them as the official symbols that will be automatically returned when the dictator goes down

I cannot speak well for the other nations you mention however, it is widely regarded as a political tool used to distract from the failures of the National government of the time. It is by no means whatsoever an accurate means of demonstrating that New Zealand wants change.
For goodness sakes, even Hawaii maintains its flag despite its clearly non-British cultural history. In the end a flag is more than what the people want, it is of the culture, the history and the people. Not just one of those elements
Australasia has a very short recent-history relative to most nations of the world. Unlike much of the old western world which is obsessed with constantly re-writing history and damaging its landmarks of the past, we have minimal to cling onto and thus any marker of our history possesses an arguably greater value.

As indonesian I've heard that the reason of malaysia chose a flag similar with the US, because USA flags specialy the stripes is represent the Union of States. This is very fit with malaysia who's consist of various small kingdom and sultanate United into a single country.

Adding the Welsh dragon to the union flag would be a good pic! The last opinion polls showed many welsh are happy with how the current UK flag is but I still think the dragon would be awesome because...Dragon!

@General.Knowledge are you a Portuguese native speaker? Your Portuguese pronunciation is just so perfect! I’m Brazilian, but I bet if you’re a native speaker, you’re probably European.

I totally agree on the Luxembourg flag, they should definitely go 100% for the beautiful and unique multistriped one with the lion. It'd help promote the country, make it more recognizable internationally.

you may forgot indonesian flag with bull head version. the flag are first introduced by perhimpoenan indonesia, the indonesian students association in dutch on 1908. the bull are symbolized on indonesian people, who are peaceful and hardworker, but can run amok & retaliate ferociously against anyone who attack them. since then, lot of indonesian founding fathers are pushed this version to be official flag, but it rejected at general nationalist assembly before the proclamation of independence as the red & white are more simpler & easy to reproduce across the newly born nation.
