Things flag would be forbbiden: text, coat of arms, more than 5 colors and to complex draws. simplicity and meaning are important over everything else.
There are always exceptions.
The vexillology association has a list of recommended design concepts and that list includes something along the lines of "you don't have to follow these rules as gospel, if it looks good it looks good"
The flag of the US State of Maryland is the best example of this.
@@davidnotonstinnett the flag of Maryland has no text, no coat of arms and 4 colors, it's a bit messed cause it's a Quartered flag. Yet it didn't brake the rules I just commented.
@@mafv4091 I'm just using it as an example of a flag typically seen as breaking the rules of flag design but still looking nice.
For example, it isn't easy to identify from far away if you don't already know it, it is hard to draw, it literally is a coat of arms (or at least based in the coat of arms of Lord Baltimore), it uses a tacky combination of colors.
And yet it works.
My point still stands that you can make a good flag even if you don't follow the "rules" of flag design.
Edit: so the flag of Maryland is actually based on the coats of arms for the Calvert and Crossland families, who Sir George Calvert belonged to both of (the Crossland family being George's mother's family) so this flag has to Coats of Arms!

I made the Chad flag, I know it isn't the best, and I'm very surprised it won, but Chad isn't a well known country and I wanted to make a more modern flag design.

I liked it a lot. I think it s symbolism would ease and bury a lot of issues that have been ongoing for centuries here, wich is surprising. Sadly it would never be accepted for those same existing tensions

As a Greek, i wanna say that that Greek flag was so simple, but so appealing. When you said that the flag was a mess, i will have to disagree just a tat bit there. It was a simple flag. A cross on the top right, representing Orthodox Christianity, and the 9 stripes that it has are actually suppose to represent the words: "Freedom or Death" (Ελευθερία ή θάνατος) from the Greek revolution of 1821.The re-design takes that away, but retains the Cross representing Orthodox Christianity, but added olive branches surrounding it, which is a nice touch if i do say so myself

I made it the day after the challenge started. I'm pretty sure at least.
I literally made it on paint 3d in about 10 minutes (i had to adjust the colors)
@@jaketrunzo8820 I would suggest using the top 3 stripes for the top half and completely orange bottom half. I am a black American and don't really like the brown color on the flag, but it is a good flag in design, you could maybe make the brown part use the current blue.

I don’t know man... some of those flags disrespect the 5 basics of flag design completely... especially when it comes to simplicity... also, never ever use texts, sigils or coat of arms in official nations flags. They are meant to be looked at from up close, not when waving in the wind.
Alin Ardelean well... thats why Mexicos flag is not that good... the green red white is good, but the seal in the middle? Not really... simplify the bird and leave the rest out, and its much better
Those five rules are more like suggestions. I was talking to a friend today about this kinda thing and I really don't like a lot of people over simplifying things because a) they all use similar templates and b) all use the same program, so sigils or coats of arms are good if done right, because they really show who's who.
scoot. Then use meaningful symbols that are easy to recognize. There are reasons for those five rules
scoot. The problem with coats of arms or sigils is they weren’t meant for flags. They were meant for use on paper, where you can see the details very well. For a flag that has to be very visible, even over greater distances, using sigils or coats of arms makes no sense. I would rather pick one central element, simplify it and put it on the flag instead of the whole sigil or coat of arms
@Arkhaon I agree with you. Most of these are just ghastly, and look like they're logos to be used in glossy fashion magazines, in good light. Most of them break the 5 basic rules, and many of them break the basic rule of heraldry (which applies equally to vexillology): "No metal on metal, nor colour on colour".
On an overcast day, at a distance, most of these "creations" will just look like a random blur.

In the end, I only submitted two flags to the contest... but I spent a lot of time throughout the entire month thinking of various designs and reading up on historical symbols for many different countries. It was a fun contest :) and the results were awesome.
My personal favourite listed in this video was probably the redesign of Spain's flag (5:40). It was super creative and very well executed!

I honestly forgot about the indian flag when I created the new flag for the Ivory Coast. But according to Allen‘s rule, asian elephants have smaller ears than african elephants, so at least biologists know that this isn‘t the flag of india :D

It can be confused with Niger too, but to fix this you can just flip it down and put green on top and orange on bottom.

Two basic design requirements that need to be seen in flags: 1) The ability to recognize it from a distance and 2) Simplicity. You want a flag a child can draw with coloured pencils, and you want one that is distinctive enough, with sufficient clarity. A really good example of a flag that fits this is the Chicago flag. Simple, clean lines, anybody can draw it. That means it can be used on a variety of objects easily. One reason we see such simple, bold colours in flags is the background in medieval heraldry. The concepts of "Metal on colour/ Colour on metal" work extremely well.

6:37 actually the stars position on Brazilian flag present the constellations that could be seen at the sky in the night the Republic was "Proclaimed" (it was a coup d'etat actually) the Imperial Brazilian Flag used to use a cyrcle with stars to represent the brazilians (states) province, just like this one.
Mak FV The only thing I’d do to improve the Brazilian flag would be removing the text, maybe even the band. The circle representing the night sky of November 15 of 1889 over Rio is a perfect design and concept. The version showed in the video is just plain ugly... Sorry.
Australia and New Zealand ought to adopt different national flags; the current flags of both nations are almost identical! I like the proposed designs for new flags of Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

As a Singaporean with familial links to Malaysia, that Malaysian flag is atrocious.
Firstly, It makes no sense. Green would make more sense than blue (after all Malaysia is tropical and Its national religion is Islam).
Secondly, removing the stripes would ignore the historical significance of the stripes, which were taken from the East India Company's flag as a nod to Malaysia's colonial past.
I propose a flag of green and blue, to represent the jungle and sky and the straits settlement crest, with nine crowns as opposed to 3, to represent the sultans of Malaysia

7:51 Green is associated with Islam, and Albania is the only state in Europe with a majority of Muslims (modulo some of the fragments of Yugoslavia, about which I am unsure).
remove the bird, and the flag is pretty much the flag of the Lezgins. they live up in the Caucasian Mountains, split mostly between southern Dagestan and northeastern Azerbaijan. in ancient times, it is told that they ruled a vast kingdom spanning the Caucasus. such a height did their civilization reach, we can find the remnants of a Lezgin writing system.
I am quite confused as to why the artist combined the flag of Lezgistan with the flag of Albania, though I do have a murky suspicion. see, the Caucasian Kingdom of old also was called 'Albania.' though I doubt if the Lezgins, descendants of the long-lost civilization, have any ethnic ties with the modern Albanians.

This Egyptian flag in the Category of Creativity is actually awesome, combining the history of Ancient Egypt by the Yellow Sandstone Pyramid and at the same time depicting the Mamluk Dynasty Yellow Flag all in one, the best in my opinion

Honestly, my favourite is the redesign of the Spanish flag! I want this made for I may fly it! I also very much liked the non-super geometric Ukrainian redesign, and the Cape Verde redesign.

As Luxembourger I find the Luxembourg flag redesing to simplistic. In my eyes the flag is too similar to the netherland flag but I find the one with the red lion well designed. And if you were to change it, keep the same amount of stripes or keep the lion. Don't change both

8:05 About our new flag, there is a lot of comments about 'new' style of our coat of arms, so this would probably be good idea but with coat of arms that was in use until 2010. ( The original one, not new masonic one) And, since our flag is basicly Russian flag upside down ( and yea it is, since that most of serbian ships in period of ww1 was w/o flag, Serbian sailors used russian flag as russian fleet was strong, and just to be clear which is which. they used to fly it upside down as to most people would be still Russian flag and those ships would be avoided ) . Hence, Serbia actually do have its older flags, yellow feild with red eagle on it ( Search Nemanici dynasty online ) .
Otherwise, we really need part two of this since this is absolutly amazing video to watch and be part of it.

TBH- sometimes simplicity is the key to design a flag. It's hard enough for a child to draw or replicate his/her own flag and it could be the same for the adults.

As a Swede I took to my hart the numerous combinations of blue and yellow of the suggested flags. The problem would be, I suspect, a certain amount of confusion at sport events.

As a Luxembourgish, I still prefer the first. I think it reminds better of our flag alternative on wich we have the red lion. Though, I think the red lion's flag would be better, just a little bit more complicated, but it could be simplified.

_My country Philippines had been mold through series of colonisation and occupation. Each of the four elements in my flag has a meaning reperesenting the four heritage (Austronesian, European, American, Asian) that marked in the identity of my country. The yellow sky represents the Malay Heritage of Austronesian native islanders. The Human faced Sun represents the Hispanic Culture which is very evident in the Philippines particularly in religion. The Stripes represents the American influence bringing democracy to the country. The red half circle represents the Japanese occupation introducing the Asianization of the archipelago. The whole flag depicts the sun setting in the western shores that is very common scenery in the Philippines especially in the Capital Manila._
I'm a Filipino and while I appreciate the symbols that are in the flag, the current flag is still better in my opinion, and the colours don't go well together.

_Avery Filipino would say the same including me. We have always been thought since kids that our flag was the best and unique and meaningful. We respect it like religious image. Any alternate flags wont stand a chance to compare with our current flag. My flag is just for fun but i made it intentionally to be mysteriously strange looking in pattern and colours._

The Croatian flag with the dragon is a Game of Thrones reference. King's Landing was filmed in Dubrovnik.

I'm from the Philippines and I like your show very much. I already felt national Identity for our flag though. Besides its the most unique flag being able to be inverted in times of peace and in times of war.
Well I think it's really cool that you're doing this and I share your passion for flags, but I have to be honest, luckily you don't get to decide which flags become official. 😁

How about a flag redesign contest where the intent of the redesign is to promote some peace process, or reconciliation between parties in conflict? Places that have had civil wars, places where there is unresolved territorial issues, etc... What do you think?
I love the hand drawn flag with the sun in the middle... That one was a redesign for the Philippines wasn't it??? Love it... :) Though less curves it would look like the union jack... Hahaha!!!
