Why Flying different sized helis makes you a better pilot

  • Yes, you should let your wife watch this video. This is a scientific explanation why flying helis of different sizes is so important. It makes us better pilots and with this better husbands. A happy pilot is a better husband. But really, flying helis of different sizes like the OMPHOBBY M1, M2 and the M4 with different tail rotor systems opened a new world of flying for me. It made me understand flying helis better and helped me to progress faster. Maybe it works as well for you. Or maybe it gives you better arguments if you want to buy a new heli end did not know how to justify it.

I'm really enjoying your videos congrats on becoming an OMP team pilot. I am 67 years old and have given up on helicopters after many attempts over the past 15 years. After watching one of your videos I bought an OMP EXP, I can't believe how well it flies. Thanks

Thank you for your congratulations! I am so happy that you gave it another try with the M2 Explore - as well my first real CP heli after a 230 S V2 which made my start painful difficult! You are another example for that its never too late to start flying helis if you really want it very much! I am as well happy that you like my videos!! I wish you lots of happy flights with a big smile in your face and in your heart! Thank you for sharing your strory!! All the very best!!

Great topic choice. I love the way that you relish wind.

Thank you Julian! I am loving wind since a long time and I had almost all of my "magic Click" moments on windy days!! The wind is my best teacher!!

Nice video once again. I'm looking forward to the update once you get the M7. I love my 580 for flying in the wind. While the m2 gets thrown around you barely notice it with the 580!

Thank you, Ruben, You are absolutely right that the big birds are flying so much better in high winds! I was just flying from the beginning with my M2 in very strong winds and learnd to love this "being thrown around" of the heli like in a virtual a game. This feels like I am "throwing" my heli like a ball into a windchannel and its thrown back. Of course I prefer side winds so that the wind does not throw the heli back to me. Nature does me this favor, we almost always winds from south to north, on my field left to right. I am maybe really a bit crazy, but I love to really play with these winds. I am not fighting them at all. Rathet "using" them It gives me so much feel for the helis. I learn so much more than on normal days!!

I have a great tip for you. If you put M2 Evo main and tail blades on the explorer it will hover better have more lift and best of all the tail will be more locked in. It works really well I did that and use a better battery and it fly's so much better. You don't have to do anything else to it. I'm not kidding you.

Thank You Joe! You did not change the motors on your M2 Explore? They work well with the longer main and tailblades? No problems? The M2 EVO flies a lot better, has much more lift and tail is locked as you wrote. I have both and I like to fly the alternate one after the other. Then you feel the difference very srong. I love as well that the EVO Tailmotor with the bigger EVO tailblade is so much quieter, especially in winds. Happy flights and thanks for the tip!!

    Looks
Like fun indeed! In the real world I fly very stable fixed wing aircraft but RC helicopters seems to improve my reactions. I’m 61 years young and I can move my thumbs and fingers with an ability as well as I did 40 years ago!

Great that you are flying fixed wings in real life and love to fly RC helicopters! So you are a young boy compared to me 😀 I am getting 63 soon and all works fine! My reactions for sure improved, as well as spacial awareness and speed of decision making. I believe we older pilots stay young as long we keep our inner child alive! And exactly this we are doing while flying our love helis!!

Good flights, especially in that wind. As impressive as hard core 3D pilots are, I'm older and I'll never be one of those. It's good to see you enjoying your helis and flying at more of a normal person's level like me. I'm glad OMP is supporting you.

Thank you very much! The wind was really crazy and it is now crazy every day! My love for helis is coming from the love for the full size helis and all what they are capable to do. I love acrobatics like the Red Bull Pilots do with their BO 105!! Thats my inspiration! Many happy flights for you and great fun and joy!!

@@RCCopterLove We are of like mind and similar story. I had the good fortune many years ago to have a boss that owned an R-22 and flew it into work several days a week. I got a ton of stick time as he was basically teaching me how to fly. Flew nearly everyday at lunch. Needless to say I loved it. I was also involved in Aerial Photography from an R/C helicopter before digital even existed. It was still all 35mm then.

@@dklassen Wow thats a great story and how lucky you have been with your boss and his R-22!! I was flying gliders when I was young and loved everything besides the starts and landings with relative high speeds. Thats why I love helicopters: They MUST hover on one place to do a proper landing! So you have been a pioneer in photography from RC helis way before drones came up!! 35mm sounds heavy I still own Nikon F3's of that times! Best greetings, my dear brother in mind!! 🙂

Very information and just the video I wanted to see - thanks!. You commented that, "after a 230 S V2 which made my start painful difficult!" the 230S V2 was a bad choice. I have been trying to learn with my 230S V2 and have not made much progress. I do OK in my SIM (RF 9.5s) but attempting very basic maneuvers I always crash. I know most of the reasons are due to my lack of skill. I was about to give up but found a sticky servo on the 230 so decided to replace it and the cracked frame - followed with a complete rebuild and setup.
However, I found the 230 to be difficult to fly with any wind - which is most of the time. This is where my question is going - should I get the OMP M2 or the Goosky S2 and try again, or jump into something like the Goosky RS4, or OMP M4? and use that for a secondary learning heli. Building a kit and going to a belt driven tail is very attractive to me. However, I do feel the size of the M4 or RS4 is way beyond my skills. Would love your thoughts on this because I'm several years older than you.

Hi and thank you for sharing your experience! The 230S V2 is so difficult to fly because it is unbalanced (tailheavy) and has a bad center of gravity. I would go for the OMP M2 EVO first. With first my OMP M2 Explore I made much, much more progress in two days than with the 230S in 3 month!! Much more. You won't believe how stable is is, how well it pitouettes if the swash plate is leveld! After some time you should go for an M4, but give yourself some time. The M2 crashes cheaper and crashes are hard to avoid. The M4 was a blast for me. Flying really was getting another dimension! But it took me a while to get to this point! I hope this helps! I am a big OMP fan and now a OMPHOBBY team pilot - so I am not neautral. But I want you to know this to be fair! All the best!! Go on!!

Yes everyday flying will help a lot. I fly only once a week and that depends on the weather. The M4 sounds and looks incredible. I have a trex 450 and I also like the sound...😀 but I think it's a bit smaller machine...so less sounds

@@jwdrone512 So I am a lucky guy that my work as a freelancer and my age allow me to fly so often. The trex 450 is a great heli, I like the look of these. I guess the Rotor Tech 385 main blades on the M4 are producing this "blade music" I love this symphony!! All the best and happy flights!! 🙂
