Drugs Are Poisoning the Water in This Mexican Vacation Destination

  • Tulum, Mexico - VICE arrives in this natural paradise formed over thousands of years of geological change, creating otherworldly rock pools and ancient, interconnected cave formations. But we’re not the only ones - tourism is flourishing here, with a new generation of “eco-travellers” and influencers, eager to share their holiday amongst the hidden rainforest cenotes to the rest of the world, bringing gangsters from nearby Cancun with them. Now a newer problem has been detected - cocaine traces found in these ancient rockpools hints at the interconnectivity of the water system here, the same one that connects the untreated sewage from the newly built eco-resorts where the tourists stay, and the rockpools they’ve travelled so far to enjoy. Ironically, this influx of tourists is destroying the natural beauty and ecosystem that attracted them here in the first place, leaving them swimming in their own excrement.

    My uncle bought some land in tulum when it wasnt popular and built a hotel there.
    When tulum became more popular the local mayor became jealous and hired gangs to takeover my uncles hotel and my uncle needed to flee to the jungle with his wife and children, where he was exposed and vulnerable.
    He managed to return to my home country, portugal and has now regain the land back again after winning a case against the mayor.He ended up selling the hotel and land as he found that tulum was not what it was and become destroyed due to heavy tourism increase

    • @adonaiorion
      @adonaiorion Před 3 lety +11

      There are alternatives to seeing the planet, and been with nature. If you can't separate consumerism from been with the planet, you have a problem; our society's skewed views are also part of that.
      We all each in our way of been somewhere are responsible. I mention it because the guy in the video washes his hands saying he doesn't want to be a part of how some hotel, etc. does business, when knowledge of how these things affect from the very for profit pursue, regardless of the approach, is available. If you want to be with nature, you should be okay leaving the tourism to the cities and towns, besides the fact that humans are not the only inhabitants of earth.
      Also, as much as people don't want to hear, the excess tourism, tech, even "green", for profit pursues, etc. are and will always be harmful. As I said, there is a balance, and from the peak, there's the decline. The problem with tourism and nature is that is not a sustainable model, because of invasion, not because of what kind of tech is used (green or not). We only have one earth of billions of evolution advanced, so no do overs in society and humanity.
