  • Tulum is experiencing an explosion of people taking Bufo Alvarius. Also called “speed-toading,” it involves smoking the milked poison of the Sonoran Desert toad in a glass pipe and is considered to be the most powerful hallucinogen in the world. Now, growing numbers of psychedelic tourists are traveling to Tulum where Bufo ceremonies are legal, in search of a life-changing experience. However, there are many reports of profoundly negative experiences, lasting psychosis and allegations of sexual assault during ceremonies. VICE’s Matt Shea visits Tulum to see and experience this new Bufo tourism firsthand, to discover whether taking the world’s most powerful hallucinogen is worth the risk.

Something that Hamilton Morris has pointed out is that the demand for Bufo venom is driving the toad to extinction. This is a pointless ecological catastrophe because the drug itself (5MeO DMT) can be synthesized, with chemicals available legally in Mexico and at a very low cost per dose.
Unfortunately, the psychedelic community is full of people who aren't great at logical thinking and they think it is somehow necessary to use a natural product instead of a synthetic drug despite the chemical equivalency of both forms.

Are we just going to ignore the fact that the shaman just ignored and even reinforced the claims about abuse and assault during such psychedelic ceremonies? This was a very powerful documentary, but it truly shocked me how ignorant and unaware the "so-called" guides were about these allegations. The audacity to say that the women are at fault for "creating a reaction" in the man is so banal and absurd.

That Shaman he interviewed on the beach seemed to have ethical practices, having a female present and being administered in a public space, for examples.
I think it was good that Matt found, but trusted, a shadier one for his own trip. It gave a good contrast.

And he reiterated that after being given a chance to hide behind a 'language barrier ' by his colleague.

100% agree. with this second huge wave of psychedelics coming into the main stream and people using them for "medicinal" reasons, the purpose and power of psychedelics are getting lost. it can open your eyes temporarily and assist with making changes, but the real work is done every day while sober. you can learn everything from the universe during a trip but it really doesn't mean anything if it can't be applied in real life. like if the only way a person can get to an enlightened state is through drugs, then are they really enlightened? ive also experimented with psychedelics and found them detrimental in some ways, since your consciousness is so heightened during a trip, when you come down it can feel like life is too hard to live, or that the journey to get to where you wanna be spiritually is too far away. this isn't in this video specifically, but i've seen a lot of people recommending psychedelics to everyone and that they can "help anyone that tries them" but this is misinformation and doesn't take into account mental health issues, trauma, and even a person's genetics. i'm just commenting cause i thought i was the only one that felt this way. it's comforting on some level to know other people see that it really is just a quick fix that doesn't last forever or magically fix a person's perspective or life.

    • @BlondeManNoName
      @BlondeManNoName Před 6 měsíci +38

@@YouAreDreamingRightNow That is correct. Psychedelics aren't a fix to trauma as I would know with C-PTSD. They do not cure it, but they will give you guidance, healing and new viewpoints. Then we have to do the work ourselves, which surely is not always easy. Changing others is impossible, changing yourself is hard too.

So the shaman is actually right with his statement, which non the less is not no excuse. Look at it from this point of view. One does not dress in a miniskirt to go to church on Sunday (unless they seek to provoke) and one does not go to the nightclub all covered up like a nun (except for Halloween maybe). Unfortunately maturity is a virtue often overlooked by a lot of girls and women nowadays. Don't be naive and try to be safe, since there are no guarantees one can at least reduce the chances.

If you’ve experienced or worked professionally with these drugs, you know how important safety is. It makes me nervous seeing how many “wellness retreats” are run by people without any modicum of psychological or medical training. This was a really important documentary, the abuses and lack of training in this space is appalling, thank you Vice.

Mushrooms are very medicinal. This is why anybody familiar with psilocybin and any other kind of fungi will tell you, "They are alive." They have a very ancient wisdom. To my experience, all mushrooms have always said, "Pay attention to your life. How you think, how you feel, and what will you do with the information that you always knew, but now are seeing in this point of view." This is why mushrooms are so respected in tribal cultures. This mental health treatment works for me too. Half micro doses do the trick for me. At least a few days at a time with lengthy time in between. Never addictive. Thank you for sharing this point!

The majority of the world still has a lot to learn around victim blaming. Claiming he’s a man as if that justifies him from having any responsibility or control over his impulses… geeeeeeeeez. Comparing rape to falling while walking in a cave. No, no. One is an accident. Another is an intentional, meditated, and voluntary horrendous crime perpetrated and justified by monsters. I think two questions are being asked here.
One is moral, the other is legal.
Should women be more careful, men more gallant, the world more safe, and who should be legally culpable for a crime that we (rightfully) consider a crime?
An ideal world would have no suffering. A preferable world would see that this industry get regulated to hell and back.

how are you just jumping into stuff with no regard? ofc the man that takes advantage is at fault, but if you are aware that this kind of stuff is happening, why wouldnt u take precautions?
for example, i lock my door everytime i leave the house.. even tho it would be wrong for someone to enter my house and steal all my stuff.. i still cant just leave my door open.

I’ve done DMT several times, LSD more times than I can remember, and shrooms a few times. I’ve smoked a lot of weed and a few times had semi-psychedelic experiences. I have had a good amount of bad experiences. I don’t regret a single one or consider it a mistake. They’re are extremely valuable experiences. The contribution they have made to my growth spiritually far surpasses anything I received growing up and I very much needed. Even the bad times. It all matters. If you expected all good, you should stay away from any substance because you’re in for a shock. Bad experiences are inevitable. Balance is necessary. This is just a principle of this reality. I think psychedelics are extremely important for western culture right now, as the lifestyle that is popularized and encouraged is very far from any kind of spirituality and gets further every year. The truth is these substances, or medicines if you prefer, are a very harsh way to wake you up from the haze that no spirituality creates. The traditional way to do this is with meditation and prayer. In various different way. But it’s much slower and more guided. A much safer way to open yourself up. Psychedelics just force you open, so there’s no protection against any negative energies that may come your way, especially if you’re not used to it. They’re not bad. But if you misuse them, you will be punished. If anything, I learned to have respect and love for every part of it. From synthesis to consumption to integration.

I believe authentically living ones life is the ultimate ego death. Authentically living, truly, is beyond ego. It is coming from the heart space, the soul space. It may not come across what I am attempting to describe in a short comment, but it is an idea I have been exploring. From observing many people, including myself, to live authentically is impossible to come from an imbalance with the ego. Now, the ego is essential, without it, I am nothing, a blob of no thing without existence, without experience. So living authentically, feels healed, feels, I know myself, and let go of who I thought myself was, and now get to be, who a really am. I say all of this, as maybe experiences such as this, are part of the journey, that leads one to this waters. So many nuances of wording or experiences to arrive at the place of our individual experience amongst a collective experience we are all yearning for. ((also, I am so happy to hear this for you. thank you for your journey! your comment feels good. like "aha! eureka!" you've found it :))

They are sacred, cool irl, funny friendly and now becoming critically endangered. People have no business doing anything other than respecting the space of these cool animals and letting them be and certainly not messing with them. This whole thing makes me so mad and even the local tribes have no historical shamanic use for these creatures. I don't consider myself an overly spiritual person but I do enjoy an occasional psychedelic trip, so I dive into this world from time to time and meet these types of people. I enjoy their company at first, kind and peaceful, oozing love and freedom, but after spending some time with them, I very often find something repulsive, worrying or downright scary in the way they talk, think or behave. That fucking creep at the end gave me the chills because it reminded me of these people and made me realize that in most cases the repulsive thing is their hidden predatoristic vibe (of course I don't mean to generalize but there is certainly a 'type')

Psychedelics, MDMA, and traditional healing have powerful roles in psychological healing with solid research backing. This is absolutely terrifying though. People who are psychotic or have a family history of psychosis, should not do hallucinogens, EVER. Serotonin syndrome, sudden, dramatic increases in symptoms from withdrawing medication, poisoning, allergic reactions, and assault, are all very real risks here.

I totally got what the shaman was saying. On a 3-D level, it sounds like victim blaming. On a soul level, we all choose every experience we have in the physical, including victimization. He was simply speaking from this higher perspective.
From my soul perspective, I chose to come in and experience certain specific traumas in order to help to transmute those energies, to have the opportunity to heal ancestral traumas, collective traumas, to have the opportunity to break cycles and create something new. I absolutely chose my experiences from this higher perspective!
There was totally a language barrier, but I don't think it was so much a Spanish or Indigenous language vs. English issue, as it was a 3D / higher self perspective issue. (In which case there is no "verses," there is simply integration).

An existential fear of not existing...and trust me, I know, having had a similar experience. This is why INTEGRATION and being guided through that is soooo important. To Recognize that you are always safe and that post-Bufo comes the REAL WORK. To let go fully and surrender to the power of unconditional love, which, on it's face looks like fear, feels like fear, but all it is, is a fear of the death of the illusion of control and duality, and stepping filly into the unknown. On the other side, if you let go into that "portal", is pure, unconditioned love. Nothing else...

I have treatment resistant depression. Don’t have a single memory of a moment it has not haunted me. I’ve done psychedelics. They provided me immediate relief. This relief lasted beyond the drugs effects, but potency wears off after a few months.
Funny thing is, I also meditate and after a year of regular practice, meditation gets me to the same exact place psychedelics do, but often clearer, and it’s far more sustained. It takes more work. You have to have self discipline and the courage to look at yourself, even the parts you don’t want. But the way he described his trip at the end, I thought “sounds just like meditation.” You don’t need drugs to become the wind. That already exists within your raw mind.

Although I run a mile, I really feel for the folk who don't have the discernment to be able to suss them out. Discernment is one of the toughest lessons on the spiritual path, especially if you are open, optimistic and naive. I used to be but my experiences have made me much more wary and cynical. The reality is, there are very few genuine, 'real deal' healers/ helpers/ teachers at the level of consciousness that's above this nonsense. They are the ones you don't hear about, as they don't have to shout about how enlightened they are. If you are lucky enough to come across such a being and that's part of your journey, it's a real blessing. I'm not sure if there is any point in trying to find them though.
